In this episode, Alice interviews Dr Jaremey McMullin, a Senior Lecturer in the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews. Jaremey's research spans a wide range of topics, from ex-combatant disarmament and veteran reintegration to youth peacebuilding and political participation in post-conflict contexts. His 2013 monograph Ex-Combatants and the Post-Conflict State: Challenges of Reintegration examines disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration policies and experiences via four case studies, in Namibia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Liberia. He is particularly interested in the impacts of reintegration and veterans' assistance programmes on people's post-conflict identities, and also in the consequences of incomplete reintegration for ongoing conflict transformation. As well as working in Africa, he has examined veterans' assistance programmes in the US, producing (among other outputs) a short documentary called Silkies (2020) on the prevention of veteran suicide. He has written several reports for the Disarmament, Demoblisation and Reintegration section at the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, and he serves on the Research Working Group of the Integrated DDR Training Group. In the podcast, Jaremey helps us to visualise the war-to-peace transitions experienced by ex-combatants and veterans as life-long journeys, which can be injurious for many. He exposes the myth of 'return' (as if people can simply pick up the threads of their pre-war lives); discusses differences in perceptions and framings of ex-combatants and veterans; and reflects on the limitations of many DDR programmes. This leads to broader discussion of the hard work of peacebuilding. Among other work, Jaremey has produced a documentary film series on the everyday work of peacebuilding called Liberia: Legacies of Peace. As Jaremey explains, the five films ‘profile people at every level of Liberian society engaged in the hard work of war-to-peace transition.' He has developed a particular interest in youth peacebuilding processes and identities, and his current project, Motorcycling as Peacebuilding in Liberia, examines the experiences of groups of ex-combatant and conflict-affected youth in Liberia who have become motorcycle taxi drivers – overcoming insecurity and marginalisation, and emerging as active peacebuilders themselves. In exploring Jaremey's work in this space, we discuss the ethics and dynamics of Participatory Action Research (PAR) and Jaremey's efforts to involve young peacebuilders as knowledge-producers and research designers, rather than as objects of study. He sets out his approach in Hustling, Cycling, Peacebuilding and What is the benefit of this project?, among other publications. We hope you find the discussion interesting. Former Canadian pro-football player, James Yurichuk, has always been well versed with the cold. In 2012 James and Brazillian girlfriend, Daniela moved from the west coast to Toronto. Lover of wildlife, technology and all things Canadian James took it upon himself to find Daniela her first parka. With no luck in sourcing a Canadian outerwear company that embraced the values of quality materials, high performance, animal friendly and Canadian made, he approached his longtime friend and master-tailor, Anthony DeBartolo, to design a warm winter parka. James shares with the Silkies what Wuxly is doing to help supply PPE's for frontline healthcare workers.
I think we can all agree that chickens are great. And while some people get chickens simply because chickens are awesome, today I want to talk specifically about getting chickens for the purpose of laying eggs. There are several things to consider when choosing what kind of egg birds to get! Let's talk about 5 common mistakes people make when choosing which egg bird breeds to bring to their homestead. *Hear this blog post as a podcast episode by pressing the triangle play button near the top of this post!* 1. Don't choose an egg bird because the breed is "cute". Or beautiful. Or trendy. Just because the breed looks good on Instagram doesn't mean it's going to be what you want for your homestead. Many years ago, before we were at the farm, I decided at one point I wanted Silkies—because Silkies are cute and fuzzy and basically a cross between a bunny and a chicken, right? However, Silkies don't lay a ton of eggs, the eggs they do lay are small, and it takes them longer than most chickens to even start laying. A couple years ago we were due to replace our flock of laying hens, and since Brahmas were taking the internet by storm (thanks to a video of an enormous Brahma rooster...) I decided that Brahmas were what I wanted. However, I once again failed to fully research the breed and we ended up short of the eggs we were hoping for from the amount of chickens we were feeding. 2. Don't decide on a certain breed of laying hen for their supposed “personality”. Everyone claims that Buff Orpingtons are a calm, friendly, and social breed—so that was one of the breeds we started with many years ago. We must have got a bum flock, because our Buff Orpingtons were anything but calm, friendly, and social. Be careful when people describe an entire breed based on personality. A breed may tend towards certain behavior, but individual chickens may vary. I would be more apt to choose a breed on how likely they are to sit on eggs or how long it takes them to start laying than how likely they may be to take a treat from my hand. 3. Don't fail to consider where you live. There are chickens that tolerate heat much better than they tolerate cold, and vice versa. There are chickens who are better suited for free ranging and foraging than others. Again, it's a "generalization", but certainly something to consider. Look at the climate you live in, as well as how your property is laid out for feeding, and take those things into consideration when choosing the best egg bird breed for your homestead. 4. Don't overlook how many eggs the breed actually lays. How many eggs does your family need? Are you selling eggs to family/friends/neighbors? How many eggs are you hoping to get per week? There is a lot of math involved in getting chickens, and one of the most important is to know that different breeds lay different amounts per year. If you want a lot of eggs, check out breeds like Leghorns, California Whites, or Barred Rock (as well as many others). Conversely, if you don't want/need a lot of eggs, keep in mind that you probably don't want a coop of 25 of these hens—or you will quickly become overwhelmed (or need to find more egg customers!) Likewise, if you do want a lot of eggs, make sure the egg breeds you're choosing lay a lot of eggs. If you're hoping for dozens and dozens a week, you're going to need quite a few Brahmas or Silkies (for instance) to make that happen. Remember to compare stats among hatcheries and in articles that fellow backyard chicken mamas and papas have written. Take into consideration that while some hatcheries may state a certain breed lays a certain number of eggs per year, actual homestead stats may differ. Do your research. Note: For those of you who want a whole rainbow of egg colors to do "eggscape pictures", understand that some of those beautiful egg colors come from chickens who don't lay very often at all. While there is nothing wrong with various colors of eggs,

Saturday 9/21/19 was the Raleigh Silkies hike and my first full hike. I embedded myself in the gaggle of pale thighs and half naked veterans for a first hand account of what an Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike is all about. This episode features interviews with our beloved leader Cindy "Mama Bear" McNally, hike coordinators Russ Oxley and Jeremy Walton and from a bunch of hikers who were kind enough to share their stories. If I you were interviewed and not featured in this episode, I apologize but I had to cut 3 hours of audio down to 30 minutes! I also didn't get everyone's name, so if you hear your interview, drop me a line at kevin@twentyonegun.net and let me know who you were!!! I bleeped out the names of those who requested it. This is a call to action for IW hikers and supporters. Kory Thomas personifies the Irreverent Warrior. He's dedicated to the IW mission and has volunteered a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to make this organization great. Kory has decided to partake in is own personal North Carolina "walkabout" to raise money for next year's Willmington, NC Silkies Hike. He is spending the week prior to the Raleigh Silkies Hike hiking from Willmington to Raleigh (around 120 miles). Kory joins me in this edition of the IW Spotlight mini-episode to talk about his service, his history with IW, and the meaning of his upcoming 120-mile odyssey. Hi all, Thanks for checking out the show! This episode will be very different from the typical Twenty One Gun Episode. I attended my first Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike this past weekend and brought along my microphone to collect some sound bites and hopefully give you a good idea of the atmosphere of one of these hikes. I for one had an amazing time and will be attending as many of these events as possible! Gene Vandeham joins me to cut up the episode to avoid confusion when one interview starts and ends. You're going to start hearing more from the Twenty One Gun Podcast at IW events... what??? Stay tuned!
Dan Maillard is a former Marine who joined the service straight out of High School. He served as Marine One Crew Chief on the VH60N at HMX-1. For all those who don't know - that's the president's helicopter and the crew chief is responsible to keep it flying. He then transitioned from the Marine Corps to the Secret Service Uniform Division as a Police Office, worked with the FBI on Counterterrorism. Dan comes on to the show today to talk about Irreverent Warriors, an organization whose mission is to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. They organize "Silkies Hikes" where veterans wear their trademark training "short-shorts" while carrying 22-kilogram packs and hiking for 22 kilometers. It's a tremendously successful organization and I will be participating on June 15th's Silkies Hike in Fayetteville, NC. This week the Liberty Hippie had the chance to talk with Julie Kirchner of Sadie-Girl Farm in Western North Carolina. Julie is enthralled with poultry and has made a thriving little side business selling some pretty fantastic chickens and quails. We talked about what varieties she focuses on - Black and Blue Copper Marans, Lavender Ameraucanas, Olive Eggers, Silkies, and Celedon Quail - and how she came to pick those varieties. We got into some of the details of her set up and how she is able to run so many flocks congruently while maintaining variety purity. These are all skills that Julie has learned later in life through non-conventional means, and it's worth noting that the community is one of superb helpfulness. Coffeeeeeee... so very, very much coffee! Christ on a bike, I know I need to not be dozing off at my desk at the moment but I've had so much fucking coffee in the last couple of days I am starting to go fucking cross-eyed. Mostly this is down to trying to get my head together after the Cold Seeds 2/Wolf Bear Crystal Toads recording sessions over the weekend which, despite my lack of real direct involvement, still managed to knock the usually ruthlessly efficient Toad machine somewhat cockeyed for a few days. Anyhow, the disruption continues with a trip to London for the Meursault show at the Islington Assembly Hall next week, and some panel appearances in Aberdeen and at Unconvention in Preston both coming up as well. And you thought I just fucked about on the internet all day! 01. Elvis Costello - Couldn't Call it Unexpected No.4 (00.31)02. The Woken Trees - Yells (07.55)03. Arran Arctic - Covers (13.09)04. So, after a couple of slightly misnumbered podcasts - 245 coming after 243, and then 244 having to come after that to try and correct the mistake, hoping two wrongs might , if not make a right exactly, at least gloss over the original wrong somewhat - we are back on track with #246. In the right order and everything. There's no real theme to this week's podcast, although we have a fair bit of new stuff in there - some by The Walkmen, The Douglas Firs, The Spook School, Monster Island and a couple of others.Next week I was thinking of doing The Ivorycast, with loads of piano music, and then perhaps one about freak folk next, assuming I manage to successfully tie down what the fuck that is. Dirty, psychedelic folk music, as far as I can tell, is about the easiest way to approximate it. Ah well, a bit of digging should do the trick easily enough. In the meantime, however, this:01.
