HOUR ONE: 7-year-old Maria went missing in 1957, and while her body was later found, her murder was never solved and the case went cold – until 50 years later when the case was finally solved and closed. But it turns out everybody was wrong. (A Cold Case Finally Solved… Then Unsolved) *** If you take State Route 375 through Nevada you will pass by the infamous Area-51. But of course they are not going to let you in, even if you ask nicely. But State Route 375 isn't called the Extraterrestrial Highway just because of one area you can't visit – there's a lot more to it than that. (The 98-Mile Extraterrestrial Highway) *** Hikers sometimes get lost in the woods, as do children of course. But those on bikes almost never disappear; but there is one tragic case of a fat tire rider who couldn't be found. (The Vanished Mountain Biker) *** In 1910 two witnesses see a pair of lights that transform into radiant beings with “human form.” You might dismiss the report as misidentification of ball lightning or some other natural explanation – but in 1952 those radiant humanoid beings of light were seen again! (Close Encounters of the Fairy Kind)==========HOUR TWO: "It was a terrible sight… I have seen horrible sights, but never anything like this.” Those were the words of the local undertaker after seeing the results of a triple murder laying before him in 1932 Pennsylvania. (The Axe Murders of Lykens) *** A gypsy once told Leonarda that all of her children would die before her.  A different fortuneteller  told her that she faced either a future in prison or in a criminal asylum. And the reason she gave for becoming a serial killer is something you'd hear out of a bad direct-to-video horror film. And that's a tiny sample of this woman's insanely dark life – which began even before her birth. (The Woman Who Made Soap) *** Ireland's Loftus Hall is considered by many to be the most haunted location on all the Emerald Isle. But the most infamous story of Loftus Hall begins not with terror, but with romance… with a beautiful young girl falling madly in love with… the devil. (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) ==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) *** Chlorosis was a frequently diagnosed disease during the 19th century that gave the skin of the afflicted a greenish tinge. As a cure, doctors told young women to get married and reproduce. As you can probably surmise, the cure was not in the least bit effective. (The Girls Who Turned Green) *** Have you heard of the poor girl who was bullied and pushed down into a sewer by those whom she thought were her friends? I'll tell you the story. And while this episode is not a creepypasta episode, so all the stories are supposed to be non-fiction, that is… true, I will be sharing this urban legend anyway – because when it comes to urban legends, sometimes it's best to err on the side of caution and simply assume they are true. (The Urban Legend of Carmen Winstead) *** Weirdo Family member Brad Hicks describes the experience as “cool… and creepy as hell”. We'll tell you his story. (The Thing In The Light) *** More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! He also collected in the other Celtic countries, and the result was an Oxford PhD thesis which he subsequently published in 1911.In our Manx translation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, the friends have come to the port of Galatz in the hope of finding Count Dracula in a box of Transylvanian earth in the hold of a ship in which he travelled from London. It's Christmas Day 1909, but American scholar, W Y Evans Wentz, is still out visiting people in Glen Maye and Peel to hear stories which he retold in 'The Fairy-Faith in the Celtic Countries', which he published in 1911.In our Manx translation of Dracula by Bram Stoker, Mina Harker has understood something of the character of Count Dracula, from some of the things the Count had told her husband, Jonathan, when he was visiting the Count in Castle Dracula - seemingly unimportant at the time, but actually an unguarded insight into the way he thinks and operates. As y kiaull ain -COWBOIS RHOS BOTWNNOG - Myn a'r ty am droEILIDH NIC CARMAIG - Duan na MuildheartaichXAREU FOLK - Muinera d'AntonAINE DURKIN - Tabhair dom do lamhJACK COLLINGS - The skippers of St IvesSTAA - Polka DrineLLEUWEN STEFFAN - Myn MairKENNETH McKELLAR - Isle of MullTRIO HAMON-MARTIN-EBREL & ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE DE BRETAGNE - Sant Fonik plinn

We rejoin W Y Evans Wentz in Ballasalla where he hears more stories about what he calls 'fairies', though Sophia Morrison points out that the Manx people had lots of names for them, but that 'fairies' was not used. Evans Wentz visited the Island in 1909 to take evidence for his book, 'The Fairy-Faith in the Celtic Countries', which was published in 1911.In our Manx translation of Dracula by Bram Stoker, Professor Van Helsing and Dr John Seward are talking about Mina Harker, who has just gone to get some information her husband, Jonathan, had written about his time in Castle Dracula. Changelings have become very popular in modern Fairy Fiction, and there seems to be some confusion about what exactly that term means. So, are you a Changeling? Or, is your child a Changeling? Lora O'Brien answers these questions from the perspective of genuine Irish Fairy Faith and the traditional Folklore of Ireland. LORA'S LATEST BOOK! -- The Fairy Faith in Ireland: History, Tradition, and Modern Pagan Practice (2021)

(The Vanished Mountain Biker) *** Chlorosis was a frequently diagnosed disease during the 19th century that gave the skin of the afflicted a greenish tinge. As a cure, doctors told young women to get married and reproduce. As you can probably surmise, the cure was not in the least bit effective. (The Girls Who Turned Green) *** In 1910 two witnesses see a pair of lights that transform into radiant beings with “human form.” You might dismiss the report as misidentification of ball lightning or some other natural explanation – but in 1952 those radiant humanoid beings of light were seen again! (Close Encounters of the Fairy Kind)(Dark Archives episode from July 31, 2020)SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…BOOK: “The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries” by W.Y. We've grown up hearing about Fairies, popularized by a certain Tinker Bell who is small and sassy.  Fairies have largely been commercialized, gracing children's books, postcards, figurines, and shows.  But who are the Fairies?  They take many forms throughout the Celtic lands of Ireland, Scotland, The Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany.  There are legends and stories, beliefs, that are shared and different.  Tales that haunt and tales that warn.  Join Steven and Sarah as they talk about all things fairies, creating a story, and getting caught up with the lore and mystery about these secret fiends.  The book referenced in the podcast is “The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries” by W.Y. Evans-Wentz, who traveled the Celtic lands in the early 1900's gathering testimonies and first hand accounts.Twitter: @CreatorsPBPodFacebook: Creator's PlaybookEpisode Hashtag: #cppodcast076Website: http://www.creatorsplaybook.com/

How do we know when the Good People are nearby us? But what about seeing the Good People? Sounds fairly straightforward doesn't it, but… perhaps there is far more to ‘seeing' the Fairy than meets the eye… ! Join me to find out more. When you think of Faerie fairs or markets, your mind most likely turns to glorious colourful painting or illustration depicting an idyllic scene of various faerie characters browsing baskets of fruit or platters of cakes, musicians and dancers scattered about. It's a lovely image, isn’t it? On this week’s episode, we discover that Faerie do gather for markets, but they are less whimsy than you might imagine. There are many recorded accounts which show us that not only do the Good People hold their own markets, but they also take a keen interest in our own human markets and fairs too. I hope you can join me as we share some poems and true curious accounts of Faerie Markets. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Patreon. On Thursday March 10th, 2016 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon and Guests Lady Jo Carson of Feraferia and Lady Ann Finnin of the Roebuck, will have a discussion on "Fairy Magick". We will recall the classics in this field such as "The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries," Evans-Wentz,(1911) "The Faerie Queen" by Edmund Spencer (1590) and more recently Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Sussana Clarke (2004) Lady Jo will mention other recent books in the field, including one she is working on involving Fred Adams extrapolations from Robert Graves' Celtic "Tree Alphabet" from "The White Goddess" (1946) which should be a veritable Qabalah of fairyland. Lady Ann will mention the Roebuck's connections to Celtic fairy lore. I will delve into "The Book of Oberon" (2015) a translation of an Elizabethan 16th century magical compendium mixing Solomonic and fairy lore in a compendium similar to the Lemegeton - and including Lemegeton material. So let's all spend an hour under the hill with the changelings and the little people -- and remember what the old cunning man said: "Aye! You can see them if they want you to." He also asked: "What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favorite color?"

The Good People have been around a long time. A really long time. Think of a long time, then multiply that by a really long time. You’re getting close. If you believe, as I do, that they are an intelligent race, (or group of clans), who have lived these many long ages, it follows their societies must take on some form of structure, some rules, or boundaries. Their society cannot be a complete free for all: if it was their carelessness and recklessness would result in them exposing themselves to us regularly. So it is that, from time to time, (not as often as us of course) the Good People enter into some form of conflict. On this week’s episode we listen to accounts from people who have witnessed the Faerie marching in procession, just as a Human army would, and engaging in battle. We ponder what Faerie battles might look like, what weapons they may use and if, even during conflict, they continue to protect the natural world. * Fancy buying me a coffee? When is a light not just a light? The Good People are masters at evading us. When it suits them, they can be impossibly elusive: appearing as nothing more than a shadow in the corner of our eye, or a feeling, a sense, within us that they are nearby. But what happens when they are so caught up in some activity, that they forget to shield themselves from Human eyes? On this week’s Podcast, we look at 3 true accounts of Faerie using extraordinary forms of light, crafted into spectacular presentations, and guaranteed to capture and hold the attention of passing Humans. Did the Faerie intend to ‘show off’ their mad-skills to these Humans, or was it just a lapse in their concentration? We ponder the source of these peculiar lights. Are they proof of the Faerie being ‘Nature Spirits’? Are these lights born of energy drawn from surrounding hills, trees and rivers? *Hi everyone, I have a mild cold and I’m a wee bit husky. Thank you!IN THIS EPISODE: 7-year-old Maria went missing in 1957, and while her body was later found, her murder was never solved and the case went cold – until 50 years later when the case was finally solved and closed. But it turns out everybody was wrong. (A Cold Case Finally Solved… Then Unsolved) *** If you take State Route 375 through Nevada you will pass by the infamous Area-51. But of course they are not going to let you in, even if you ask nicely. But State Route 375 isn’t called the Extraterrestrial Highway just because of one area you can’t visit – there’s a lot more to it than that. (The 98-Mile Extraterrestrial Highway) *** Hikers sometimes get lost in the woods, as do children of course. But those on bikes almost never disappear; but there is one tragic case of a fat tire rider who couldn’t be found. (Close Encounters of the Fairy Kind)TRANSCRIPT FOR THIS EPISODE…Find a full or partial transcript at the bottom of this blog post: https://weirddarkness.com/archives/7017MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE…BOOK: “The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries” by W.Y. That is, Faerie who either have the appearance of a dog-like creature, or take the shape of a dog-like creature. On this episode we discover that, when it comes to dogs, we have something remarkable in common with the Good People: a long-standing bond, and deep affection for ordinary, companion dogs.Join Kitty to hear tales of ordinary dogs which play an important part in Faerie society, and share a tale of a very special, silver-eyed Faerie puppy.*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. Let’s go to Brittany, home of the Corrigan!Brittany is a beautiful region of the most western peninsula of France. Along with Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, Brittany is one of the Celtic nations and enjoys its own unique Faerie folklore. As all keen Faerie observers will know: we must resist the temptation to judge a Faerie by its appearance. And so it is with the Corrigan of Brittany.Known for her beauty, golden tresses, sparkling eyes, moist lips and ever-beckoning arms, she delights in harassing, seducing and sometimes even destroying, human men. You see, below the shiny surface dwells a whip smart mind and a simmering resentment. Her feeling toward human men teetering on that fine line tween love and hate. Join Kitty as she ponders why the Corrigan carries a particular grudge against men of the clergy.Could it be the Corrigan, to this very day, is holding them accountable for the persecution and ultimate demise of their Ancestors? *Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. What would you do if one of the Good People came knocking on your door?Would you answer?Or would you hide behind the curtains? Our relationship with the Good People has been one of twists and turns. Ups and downs. There is a theory, long held by many, that the Good People occasionally reproduce with humans. There may be several reasons for this. Some faerie may enjoy the act of seduction, for some it might be a novelty, a boredom-buster, or perhaps it’s based on a genuine attraction, but some believe the good people need to reproduce with humans from time to time to keep their own bloodlines strong. Perhaps there are particular races of Faerie which do benefit from the occasional shot of human genetic material. And today we’re going to look at the nuts and bolts of this. Not the beginning of the process, but rather the end. A Faerie giving birth to a child who is half human.Did you know that Faerie giving birth to a human/faerie child requires a Human midwife or wise-woman to attend her during birth? There are many women who have attended a Faerie during childbirth and returned to tell the tale. Some of these Faerie midwives benefit from their service, while many others wish they had never answered that knock at the door…*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. You care for and nurture this child.  One night, you lovingly place your child in its crib and go to bed.  You wake in the morning, enter the nursery to check on and feed your baby, you approach the crib and when your eyes meet the tiny little being lying in your babies bed… is not the baby you placed in there the night before. No one wants to see a death coach.Even to see the back of it, riding past your house, or leaving town is no great comfort, for the mere passing of the Death Coach is a sign of an impending death. But that’s not all… the Death Coach also transports the body or spirit of those who have already passed. You will hear long before you see it: clanking wheels, cracking whips, rattling chains and stamping hooves, the Death Coach barrels down narrow lanes and dark roads on darkest nights. Most who hear the Death Coach approach scuttle theirselves behind closed doors and latched windows, but what can you do if you find yourself stranded outside? On this week’s episode, Kitty shares tips on what to do, how to avoid the Death Coach and gives fair warning on what you might find if you dare to open the coach door and take a peek inside…Fancy more Encounters with the Good People? You are cordially invited to join ‘Encounters with the Good People’ on YouTube. No, not those kinds of Knockers! This week we’re venturing underground to take a peek at those elusive creatures who lurk in and around mine tunnels and caverns: Knockers, also known as Tommyknockers. Are they Faerie, could they be spirits or even ghosts? Are they kind and helpful to the miner? Leading him to rich pockets of ore, and warning him of imminent danger?Or are they cruel and dangerous? Leading him away from ore and into caverns filled with deadly gas or water? That depends on who you ask, but one thing we know for certain, many miners have seen and heard Knockers in England, and Tommyknockers in the U.S.Join Kitty as she takes a fresh look at these fascinating Faerie.Fancy more Encounters with the Good People? For a daily peek at modern and historical encounters with the Good People, plus loads of great links, conversation starters and otherwise hard-to-find information on the Good People, visit Kitty’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleOr, for a dose of Faerie on the go, drop into Kitty’s ‘Faerie Lucky Dip’ over at Instagram. Bin your plastic masks and candy cauldrons, it’s time to talk about the real Halloween. You can be sure: Halloween, or All Hallow’s Eve, is far more frightening than any costume or horror film. All Hallow’s Eve falls on the Autumn Equinix. It is long believed that this pause causes a brief suspension in the natural world. For one night, our world and the otherworld slips, allowing Faeries, Spirits and Ghosts to pass between with ease. What?!That’s right. On the night of Halloween, Faeries, Spirits and Ghosts enjoy absolute freedom. They can go anywhere, and do most anything they please. Some Spirits may wish for nothing but to visit loved ones, enjoy a little music and hospitality… lovely.Others though, have been waiting, biding their otherworldly time to pay a visit to someone who have offended or wronged them in their life and unleash a little payback. This is when things get scary. And the Faerie? Well as we know, they are unpredictable and can be deathly dangerous. On this night… when the dead and the living mingle, anything can happen and canny folk will take precautions to protect themselves.Kitty looks at what can happen on Halloween and shares loads of customs and tips to help you navigate your way through this spooky night to see another dawn.Do you have a tale of an encounter with Faeries, Spirits or Ghosts? You can contact Kitty at:www.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeoplewww.instagram.com/encounterswiththegoodpeoplehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZISzueo7YXNPwowda2p0zQwww.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comglassonionstories@gmail.com*PODCAST CREDITS:Edited by: Magic Dan.‘Spirits of the Dead’ by Edgar Allan Poe. You might think that a relationship or interaction between Human Clergy and the Good People seems ludicrous, or at best, unlikely.Best think again! It is long accepted that many members of the Clergy have had encounters with the Good People and whatsmore, have an understanding of their ways, and insight into ‘untangling’ some of the Good People’s tricks.Indeed, in days past, a canny Priest with a broad minded view and belief system, was an extremely valuable fella to have around.Kitty takes a look at surprisingly frank recorded accounts from members of the Clergy who have seen the Good People with their own eyes and share their understanding of the Good People. We also ponder why it’s hard to imagine modern-day Clergy being so open-minded.To grab a great 30 free membership deal at Audible, go to www.audibletrial.com/kitty and you can download any book from their unmatched range of audiobooks for free!

“I have had a most rare vision. I have had a dream, past the wit of man to say what dream it was.”–Shakespeare “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” The summer solstice is the longest day of the year---and it marks the beginning of our return to the lingering darkness. Many people across time and cultures believed that the invisible world behind our familiar material plane was particularly accessible at this time. This meant that you could communicate with your ancestors and other members of the spirit world, as well as elves and fairies. This idea is often pooh-poohed these days, as a relic of a less sophisticated time. But is it ridiculous to believe in fairies? Or are we taught to ignore or discount experiences that are rare and/or difficult to describe? In this program I explore this question a bit, aided by a scholarly work on the topic, The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries by W. Y. Evans-Wentz. I also tell the story, “The Fairies of Merlin Craig” and a few anecdotes about folks who befriend fairies. These and other Scottish folk tales can be found at www. compassrose.org. Part 1 of our epic 18th Century Scots tale and lots more This is the first time that we've released a seasonal Holiday Show rather than a Festival Holiday Show. The plan is to try and get a Holiday show out for the four seasons until Gary is well enough to get back to the Festivals. We've got an epic 18th century tale from Scotland that has had to be split into two parts - so you're going to get two shows for the price of one - so to speak! There are three amazing pieces of music and the beginning of a small series about the Fey in the Celtic countries based on the work of W Y Evans-Wentz in Fairy-Faith in the Celtic Countries. Look out for part two of the story coming out very soon! Full Show-notes, with all credits, can be found on our main Website at http://celticmythpodshow.com/spring2010a Running Order: Intro 0:41 News & Views 1:43 Shaman Spirit Reindeer of Siberia by the Magic Folk 2:48 The Fairy-Faith in Wales by W Y Evans-Wentz 8:38 Armorica 15:06 Laoch Sidhe by Phil Holland 15:35 The Wife or the Wuddy, Pt.1 by John Mackay Wilson 22:55 Riddles by Dark Patrick 1:04:21 Listener Feedback: Keith Wilson 1:09:56 Out-takes 1:10:50 We hope you enjoy it! We also mention that we've got a Skype answerphone set up so that you can leave messages for us or possibly talk to us if we're here. Add 'celticmythpodshow' to your contacts list and you'll get through to us. If you want the message to be personal and not go on the air, just say Personal message and we'll respect that.    Shaman Spirit Reindeer of Siberia by the Magic Folk Magicfolk produce a traditional and modern blend of folk, celtic, prog and rock, writing original and alluring songs with mythological and mystic leanings. They also love their roots with fiery fiddles and pipes, and will sometimes burst into traditional reels and jigs on stage. They continue to absorb new influences, including traditional sounds along the lines of Capercaille, prog-rock timings in the style of Dream Theater, or world music influences such as Greek or South American drum rhythms.  Grounded in acoustic instrumentation, their songs often develop into raucous rock, jazz and psychedelic improvisations. They also have gentle songs which take you to other more restful places. You can find out more about Magic Folk on their website or on our Contributor Page.   The Fairy-Faith in Wales by W. Y. Evans-Wentz Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (February 2, 1878 – July 17, 1965) was an anthropologist and writer who was a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and as a teenager read Madame Blavatsky's Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine and became interested in the teachings of Theosophy. He received both his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, where he studied with William James and William Butler Yeats. He then studied Celtic mythology and folklore at Jesus College, Oxford (1907); there he adopted the form Evans-Wentz for his name. This is one of the most in-depth and scholarly attempts to explain the phenomena of the Celtic belief in fairies. Based on Evans-Wentz' Oxford doctoral thesis, it includes an extensive survey of the literature from many different perspectives, including folk-lore, history, anthropology and psychology. The heart of the book is the ethnographic fieldwork conducted by Evans-Wentz, an invaluable snapshot of the fairy belief system taken just on the cusp of modernity. There are regional surveys of the fairy-faith in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany and the Isle of Man. You can read the whole text on Sacred Texts.   Armorica We also mention 'Armorica' and wonder whether this is meant to be America or some part of Brittany. From Wiki, we learn that Armorica or Aremorica is the name given in ancient times to the part of Gaul that includes the Brittany peninsula and the territory between the Seine and Loire rivers, extending inland to an indeterminate point and down the Atlantic coast. The toponym is based on the Gaulish phrase are-mori "on/at [the] sea", made into the Gaulish place name Aremorica (*are-mor-ika ) "Place by the Sea". The suffix -ika was first used to create adjectival forms and then, names (See regions as Pays d'Ouche < Utica, Perche < Pertica ). The original designation was vague, including a large part of what became Normandy in the 10th century and, in some interpretations, the whole of the coast down to the Pyrenees. Later, the term became restricted to Brittany.   Laoch Sidhe by Phil Holland A Celtic harpist/singer/songwriter, Phil Holland has performed all over Europe as a soloist. Phil is a classically trained musician with Celtic roots. Her music contains many influences from classical to traditional including jazz and minimalist inspired sounds. Phil’s music however transcends category and genre. Her peaceful, reflective style touches the heart and souls of people of all ages, from all walks of life, all over the world. Here you can hear Laoche Sidhe from the album Faeries which is the tale of a Warrior or Hero Faerie in the Battles of the Tuatha De Danaan. You can find out more about Phil on her website or on her Contributor Page.   The Wife or the Wuddy, Pt.1 by John Mackay Wilson This story is the first part of a tale, "The Wife or the Wuddy' by Mr Wilson who was famed for collecting hundreds of tales from the Scottish Borders. I think they went up to about volume 23! This story is a little lengthy, and is the main reason that we split this Holiday Special into two parts. If you find the accents or the vocabulary somewhat difficult to follow, then please follow along with the text which you can find at Project Gutenberg listed below. But no cheating! :) Wait until part 2 before finishing the story! We bet you can't!  You can read the original of this book on Project Gutenberg.   Riddles by Dark Patrick Founded by Ukrainian Eva and Englishman Paul, musicians with experience touring in Great Britain and Ukraine, international ethnic-fusion project Dark Patrick is gaining speed, taking part in all the biggest Ukrainian folk festivals. Each member of the group has mastery of several modern and folk instruments (often playing more than one at once). You can read more about this original and fascinating Celtic music on Dark Patrick's website or on their Contributor Page.     Listener Feedback Keith Wilson We play some feedback from Keith Wilson, the author of Nami's Trees which you can hear on the Lughnasadh Holiday Special, 2009, SP13.
