Among the several NBT camps that Sharris started are GLoW (Girls Learning to Weld) and GADgET (Girls Adventuring in Design, Engineering, and Technology) Girls. And Santaniello speaks about her efforts to help District 155 in the Chicago-area grow its trades and industrial technology programs at the high school level. Be sure to come see Barb on stage and join a great association. The Cal-Lab meeting February 23 & 24 in Chicago! JOIN TODAY! (https://cal-lab.org/) Over the years, we have talked to a lot of families in dental. Husband and wife. Fathers and Sons. Mothers and Daughters. Bothers. Sisters. But never have we talked to 5 family members at the same time all in the industry. Let us introduce you to the Szara's (sort of). Many of you might already know. First up is the guy that started it all, Wayne Szara Sr. Wayne went to technical school, he did dental technology in the Navy. After he opened up his own lab in his house and taught at the local dental technology program. He introduced the profession to his brother-in-law. Mike Capps (the non-Szara), who had the passion to be his own boss and went on to open a great lab outside of Chicago called Technic Dental Lab (https://www.technicdentallab.com/). Wayne had two sons that spent their youth with dad in the house working in the lab, and there was no way they couldn't be influnced to join this great industry. Wayne Szara Jr went through the school but took a different path and spent some time with Sterngold before spending the last 20 years with ZimVie teaching people around the world about implants and attachments. Steve Szara decided to get into Ortho, opened his own lab, and also created a name for himself online teaching and inspiring others (https://www.youtube.com/@SzaraDentalLab)in ortho lab work. And now, Steve's daughter Erin Szara after years helping her dad in his lab and growing up with all this dental inspiration, starts her journey in dental school to become the dentist that all the others originally wanted to be. In a 1969 speech Fred Hampton declared, “We say you don't fight racism with racism — we're gonna fight racism with solidarity.” He and his allies knew that the forces against them were so powerful that only by working together would they even begin to achieve equality and justice. The youngest child of Francis and Iberia Hampton, Fred was raised in the Chicago suburbs with his brother and sister. Among his family's acquaintances was Emmett Till, a Black child whom Iberia had babysat. In 1955, when Till was a teenager visiting relatives in Mississippi, he was lynched by local white men. The Hampton family's connection with Till, along with their experience of racial inequity in their suburban community, made Fred keenly aware of racial injustice. While attending high school in Maywood, Illinois, Hampton organized a student section of the NAACP, served on his school's Interracial Cross Section Committee (a club that helped white students confront their racist beliefs), and protested the unjust arrest of Eugene Moore, a classmate who would later become the area's first Black state representative. After graduating from high school with honors, Hampton enrolled in a prelaw program at Triton College, a public college near Maywood. After experiencing a series of negative, occasionally violent, interactions with the police at rallies and demonstrations, in 1968 Hampton parted ways with the by-the-book NAACP and joined the Black Panther Party as one of the Illinois chapter's original members. The party, founded two years earlier in Oakland, California, by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, had originally been intended to organize patrols of Black neighborhoods and protect residents from police brutality. It quickly evolved into a Marxist revolutionary group that called for paying reparations to African Americans for the centuries of exploitation they had endured, for exempting African Americans from the military draft, and for arming African American communities. According to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, the Black Panthers were “the greatest threat to the internal security of the country.” No sooner had the Chicago Black Panthers begun than the FBI began monitoring their activity. Hampton was a possible suspect for what Hoover considered the threat of an emerging “messiah,” a leader who could “unify, and electrify, the militant black nationalist movement.” Fred Hampton was assassinated Dec 4th 1969 at age 21as depicted in 2021's Judas and the Black Messiah. “I never know how I am going to connect with a guest. Some- times the guest comes to me and there was no instance of this more welcome than when Dr. Philander Ratliff introduced himself on the fb. While I was ensconced on a feed from the fb, I received the fol- lowing song: https://www.reverbnation.com/philandervanratliffI knew next to nothing about who was being this music, but I loved what I was hearing, everything about it. I have always been a fan of popular rhythm and blues and soul and this cut was deeply rooted in all of that. It was only later that I learned that one of the people behind the cut also had a career as a nurse and, finally, a doctor. Dr. Ratliff has deep roots in the music scene of Chicago. Indeed the choir director of the church he had grown up in was no less than Ramsey Lewis' father. All artistic creation is rooted in various traditions and styles, these can come from literally anywhere and Chicago , of course has always been at the forefront of such contribution. I found my conversation with Dr. Ratliff nothing short of a de- light. As in all of my episodes I learn so much from the guest. In this case I learned that, much like Joey Romer or Kerry Lil- ly, Dr. Ratliff has seemed to have lived more than one lifetime with a single life; I was always learning of many accomplish- ments. Someday, when we turn a corner in this moment we all find ourselves in, I look forward to meeting with him in person, hopefully with a piano alongside us. I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did recording it.” This clip of a news story about Dr. Ratliff’s work, says it all: https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-proud-philan- der-ratliff-guitar-impact-family-center/2111120/ Phil’s Bio Dr. Philander Van Ratliff FB: Philander Van Ratliff Tatemusicgroup.- com Philander Van Ratliff/Reverb na- tion Amazon.com, I tunes, Spotify, SoundCloud Dr. Philander Van Ratliff Professional Guitarist/Singer/Writer/RN/Medical School Graduate 2018 from IUHS School of Medicine Raised in Chicago ,Il Projects in The 1960's-1970 Graduated from Proviso East High School, May- wood, Il. 1979. I talked with Zee Ali about running a remote team. This is the business of e-commerce. Episode one 18. Welcome to the Business of eCommerce. The show that helps eCommerce retailers start, launch and grow their eCommerce business. I'm your host, Charles Palleschi , and I'm here today with Zee Ali. Zee is the founder of Z swag, a full service custom apparel, promotional merchandising and fulfillment company Z works with brands including Chick-fil-A, Sony cricket, wireless, general mills, and LinkedIn. I assume on the show today to chat about how he runs a remote team. So hazy. How are you doing today? Zee (00:42): I'm fantastic. Thank you so much for having me on. Charles (00:45): Yeah, it's awesome to have you. I love kind of talking about other folks who have kind of done the whole remote thing. I feel like that's, that's one of those reasons fundamentally why a lot of people get into this business because it's something that you can run remotely, right? Not like there's a lot of businesses, it's just not possible. But e-commerce is one of the few things that it truly is like completely. Location independent. So how long have you been running this particular company for? Zee (01:13): Almost 10 years and years. Okay. And remote the whole time. So, so our team isn't enormous. We certainly have, we have two offices currently. People go if they want to go, if they don't, they, they can work from home. That's up to them. For me remote is just easier. We accomplish this by providing clear outcomes of each job role. Here's what we're looking to achieve. So you don't measure success by the time that they're clocking in, clocking out. It's by the results themselves. So if you provide clear KPIs and clear outcomes, it makes things a bit easier. Charles (01:54): [Inaudible] Are, so where are, where are you located for our stuff right now? Physically? Zee (01:59): Right now I'm sitting in Louisville, Kentucky, and tomorrow morning I will be in Chicago where our HQ is. Charles (02:05): Okay. What does office number two Zee (02:08): That's in Chicago? That's, that's our flagship Porter's that's, yeah. Where the company all started Charles (02:14): And then it was the second office Zee (02:16): That is in Louisville, Kentucky. I'm in one of the conference rooms. Charles (02:19): Yeah. Okay. Very cool. Okay. And about how many employees? Zee (02:21): You're both ten-ish. Say we have like seven full-timers and we've got like three to five kind of floating around here and there as, as

Katherine Jeans is my friend who I met at the Third Unitarian church and whose monthly book club I joined. She grew up in rural Kentucky with loving parents and five siblings during the Great Depression. Although experiencing bullying in her youth, she moved to beautiful Florida where she learned to make friends and wrote book reviews for the school newspaper. After marriage, she lived briefly in Georgia and Mississippi before arriving to Chicago in 1947. She soon started working on the campaign for Henry Wallace as well as being part of the tenant’s council to help ensure affordable housing. After a difficult marriage and divorce, she managed and raised her 3 children as well as finding a home and community at Third Unitarian Church. At age 60, she pursued a dream and became a clinical psychologist. She practiced clinical psychology for a time before becoming a teacher at Triton College where she also helped organize a union for the part-time faculty. She enjoys people, and feels fortunate to have such a tremendous group of friends and a wonderful family that she deeply loves.

Zee Ali is the founder of Zee Group, a full-service custom apparel and merchandising company. Their products include custom apparel/uniforms, promotional products/custom premiums, print material/direct mail, event/tradeshow products, graphic design, award products, brand identity, and packaging/gift with purchase.  Zee started the business as a hospitality apparel company while he was studying restaurant management and culinary arts at Triton College. He started it with just $800 in his bank account and has grown it into a million dollar business.  Period in full-time business  He has been in business for 7 years now.  Core revenue streams  When he started the business he was selling chef coats and uniforms to culinary schools. In fact, he was selling the chef coats to his fellow students while he was studying the culinary arts. When people were asking him for aprons, hats, knives, pastry sets, pens and mugs, he would supply them all without exception, and so far his company offers more than a million products. They have partnered with some of the largest brands in the world including Nike.  His company is a B2B business that customizes merchandise for clients.  Culinary arts industry  His company works with different culinary schools to provide them with all their uniforms, pastry sets and other items. They also manage the logistic fulfilments for the schools. Zee worked in the industry for a while from being a buster to a server, bar tender, and executive chef but he now doesn't have time for that. In future he would like to travel through Europe and do some cooking.   Starting out in business  The root of his business journey started when he was very young. He was always money hungry and had side hustles all the time. He sold bootleg music, dvds, cigarettes, and any item he could get. He eventually got a job at a senior luxury living community as a busboy and worked his way up to a server. He used to really want a chance to cook and one Saturday he got the chance to wash dishes which eventually led him to becoming a prep cook and later a line cook. He had the job all through high school and through sponsorships he got a chance to join culinary school.   While there, he started getting chef coats from a flea market for a few dollars and then selling them to other students from his duffle bag. He kept selling the chef coats because a friend of his used to get them from a good source and together they would make good money from that.  Getting the first set of clients  His first customer was a culinary school he was referred to by one of his teachers. He showed up at the school with his duffle bag and his prices printed out, which really impressed the chef who ended up making an order immediately but Zee couldn't supply them there and then because the chef required him to have some business-related paperwork to become an approved vendor. Zee went and got all the necessary paperwork for his business and went back to them after which he got them as his first customers.  He would always secretly record all the conversations he had with clients and prospects because he never understood all the business language they used. At that time, Zee was not branding the coats and the only reason why he got them so cheap from the flea market was because they were considered defective coats. They used to be in great condition so he could comfortably sell them to his customers.  Growth strategy in the beginning  Zee used to print fliers and give them to people in the culinary schools. He also convinced teachers to let him show up in their classes and let the students try on the coats so that the ones who needed them would order. When he started getting into the other merchandise like t-shirts and hats, he would target businesses that were visible to him like auto shops and many more. It all worked well for him.  Tip: If you are working on a business, make sure to take the time out to identify your ideal...
