POPULARITY
We don't track humor-based metrics at The Dark Zone, but if we did, this episode would be tough to beat. Barb Campbell is a fixture in the Canadian adventure racing community, and we're delighted to finally have her on the show. She's been a longtime reach guest on our episode planning whiteboard, and it was well worth the wait. Enjoy the conversation!Programming Note - The 2010 UTNE video referenced by Barb is linked below and, yeah, they were awfully tired. Thank you for listening.
Thank you to Grant Killian for joining us for our 100th episode. Untamed New England holds a special place in the AR World as well as for The Dark Zone as it was the first expedition race that we tackled. A legendary race, UTNE was known not only for its challenging terrain and navigation, but for the ethic of exploration and discovery brought to the event by Grant. Even though the UTNE was last held in 2018, the DNA of his race lived on in many of today's most popular races (and we hope that this episode will help bring UTNE back!).

If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die...!! So learn from this video how we can make money using money.. To dosto is video me hamne dekha ki share market ek bhaut acha tareeka hai paise se paise kamaane ka Agar ham in multibaggers companies ko dekhe jaise ki astral poly aur Asian paints to bina kaam kiye ham isme kuch paise invest kar ke bhaut sa amount return me paa sakte the. Ab koi sure to nhi ho sakta ki actual me kaunsi company is tareeke ki niklegi lekin phir bhi hamne ek filter criteria dekha jise ham apply kar to kam se kam hamare successful hone ke chances badh jaate hai. Is criteria me hamne dekha tha ki 5 cheeze to kam se kam company ki check karo:- jisme pehla tha Net Sales:- yaani kya sales har saal grow ho rhi hai ya nhi..jitni zaada growth utna acha dusra hame dekhna hai Net Profit:- yaani kya profit increase ho raha hai ya nhi teesra hame dekhna hai Borrowing:- jitna kam udhaar utna acha chautha hame dekhna hai jitne zaada company ke reserves utne ache ikyunki ham bure waqt debt chuka sakte haiska ham Debt yaani udhaar ke saath ratio bhi le sakte hai to 10% ya us se kam acha mana jaata hai. aur panchva tha promotors holding.. yaani agar company ke promoters khud ka share sell nhi kar rahe hai to ye acha sign hai.. Finally agar ye paancho cheezo se company ki financials strong lag rahe hai to wait karo ki us company ka P/E uski industrial P/E se kam ho jitna kam utna acha. Aur minimum is criteria ke baad hi invest karo. Obviously i hope aap log samajte honge ki ek 10 minute ki video me puri analysis nhi seekhayi jaa sakti thi.Isiliye ye method 100% solid nhi hai lekin to he honest koi bhi analysis se aap 100% sure nhi ho sakte. in analysis se ye to pata nhi chalta ki kaun si company ke shares khareene hai lekin ye zaroor pata chal jaata hai ki kin company ke shares nhi khareedne. Isme zaada success ke chances tabhi hai jab hame business ke baare me 100% pata ho yaani product kya hai, kya log use pasand kar rahe hai aur company aage expand kaise karti rahegi jitni zaada ham investment ko as a business partner ki tarah dekhenge. Utne ache ham decisions le paayenge. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/greatideasgreatlife/message

Edmund Harris Utne forteller at Grieg komponerte mye musikk i Ullensvang. Strykekvartetten ble komponert her. I hagen utenfor Hotel Ullensvang står Griegs komponisthytte.

This week on the podcast we present an Encore episode of a staff favorite from the For The Wild archives. Diana Beresford-Kroeger is a one-woman force of regeneration of the biosphere! A botanist, medical biochemist and self-defined "renegade scientist," she brings together ethnobotany, horticulture, spirituality and alternative medicine to reveal a path toward better stewardship of the natural world. Orphaned in Ireland in her youth, Diana was educated by elders who instructed her in the Brehon knowledge of plants and nature. Told she was the last child of ancient Ireland and told to one day bring this knowledge to a troubled future, Diana has done exactly that. Her Bioplan is an ambitious plan encouraging ordinary people to develop a new relationship with nature, to join together to replant the global forest. Her books include The Sweetness of a Simple Life, The Global Forest, Arboretum Borealis, Arboretum America, and A Garden for Life. Diana Beresford-Kroeger was inducted as a Wings WorldQuest fellow in 2010 and named one of Utne reader’s World Visionaries for 2011. A delightful meander into the deep knowledge of the forest! How do trees communicate with one another and act for the common good? Why are oceans utterly dependent on healthy forests? How would a regenerative society meet its resource needs? What do children know that their parents have forgotten?

Maggie Jackson is an award-winning author and former Boston Globe columnist known for her penetrating coverage of social issues, especially technology’s impact on humanity. Her essays and articles have appeared in publications worldwide, including the The New York Times, Business Week, Utne, and on National Public Radio. One of her most popular books is Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age which jumpstarted our global conversation on the steep costs of fragmenting our attention. Stew and Maggie discuss these costs and their consequences. Maggie believes this fragmentation is such a destructive force that there is a coming dark age, an age where the quality of communication drops dramatically. One of the best ways to curb the negative effects of technology is to simply talk about it with family members and coworkers, then takes steps to create workable boundaries, to allow for undistracted time. Maggie explores other solutions too in this engaging conversation. You can find a transcript here. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Feature Guest: Brian TrentHere’s the ultimate challenge for science fiction. How do you describe the appearance and behaviour of an intelligent alien species when we have no example to go on but us? How can we ever know our portrayal is truly alien and not a projection of our own expectations, hopes and fears? Or has the job of science fiction all along been to hold up a mirror to ourselves? Today we're joined at The Star Spot by Brian Trent, an award-winning science fiction author who manages to blend shockingly unfamiliar alien beings within stories of profound humanity. Today’s episode of The Star Spot is the third in a three part series featuring interviews with the keynote speakers at the 13th annual Expanding Canada’s Frontier’s symposium, this year on the topic Astronomyths: Science or Fiction?, looking at cosmology and alien life, hosted at the University of Toronto this past January. The Star Spot is Now on the Radio! The The Star Spot podcast is now The Star Spot podcast and radio show. A delightful meander into the deep knowledge of the forest! How do trees communicate with one another and act for the common good? Why are oceans utterly dependent on healthy forests? How would a regenerative society meet its resource needs? What do children know that their parents have forgotten? Diana Beresford-Kroeger is a one-woman force of regeneration of the biosphere. Her books include “The Sweetness of a Simple Life,” “The Global Forest,” “Arboretum Borealis,” “Arboretum America,” and “A Garden for Life.” Diana Beresford-Kroeger was inducted as a Wings WorldQuest fellow in 2010 and named one of Utne reader’s World Visionaries for 2011. Alison Bechdel is the author of the comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For. A countercultural institution, the strip is syndicated in dozens of newspapers, translated into several languages and collected in a series of award-winning books. Utne magazine has listed DTWOF as “one of the greatest hits of the twentieth century.” And Comics Journal says, “Bechdel’s art distills the pleasures of Friends and The Nation; we recognize our world in it, with its sorrows and ironies.” In 2006, Houghton Mifflin published Bechdel’s graphic memoir, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. The bestselling coming-of-age tale has been called a “mesmerizing feat of familial resurrection” and a “rare, prime example of why graphic novels have taken over the conversation about American literature.” Bechdel lives near Burlington, Vermont.Alison Bechdel read from her work on April 10, 2008, in Cornell’s Goldwin Smith Hall. As has become an innovative way to experience the joy and difficulties of eating local food, many communities are challenging their people to eat more locally or better yet, entirely local for a specified period of time. In September 2007, the city of Vancouver proclaimed the month as eat local month, the city of Hamilton Ontario has launched an eat local project, and here in the city of Nelson, our own eat local challenge took place in the month of August. 150 Nelson-area residents pledged to commit to eating more locally, and many local businesses took it upon themselves to provide their customers with more local options. On this broadcast we hear segments from a conversation facilitated with seven of those who pledged to take the challenge in Nelson. We hear how they managed such an undertaking, what they learned from the experience, and whether or not they gave up! We also listen in on a few short segments from a recent visit to Nelson by authors Alisa Smith and James Mackinnon of the bestselling title, "The 100-Mile Diet". Guests/Speakers Anne Marchildon, Becky Quirk, Nancy Roulston, Lorraine Carlstrom, Mackenzie Carlstrom, Tara Stark, Matt Lowe - Nelson Eat Local Challengers (Nelson, BC) - Community Food Matters is a collective of individuals, organizations, institutions, health authorities and businesses who are concerned with Nelson's food security. CFM launched the Eat Local Challenge during the month of August. Alisa Smith - 100-Mile Diet Society (Vancouver, BC) - is a freelance writer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her articles have been printed in U.S. and Canadian publications from Reader's Digest to Utne. The books Liberalized (New Star, 2005) and Way Out There (Greystone, 2006) also feature her work. Smith has a Master's degree in history and has taught magazine writing. She has been a member of the Cypress Community Garden for five years, and hopes someday to successfully grow an eggplant. James (J.B.) MacKinnon - 100-Mile Diet Society (Vancouver, BC) - is the author of Dead Man in Paradise (Douglas & McIntyre), which won the 2006 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-fiction. His work as a journalist has earned two national magazine awards, and he is a senior contributing editor to Explore Magazine. A past editor of Adbusters, MacKinnon speaks regularly on writing and the politics of consumerism. After a year on the 100-Mile Diet, he will never again eat store-bought sauerkraut.
When the average North American sits down to eat, each ingredient has typically travelled at least 1,500 miles. On the first day of spring, 2005, Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon chose to confront this unsettling statistic with a simple experiment. For one year, they would buy or gather their food and drink from within 100 miles of their apartment in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since then, James and Alisa have gotten up-close-and-personal with issues ranging from the family-farm crisis to the environmental value of organic pears shipped across the globe. They've reconsidered vegetarianism and sunk their hands into community gardening. Their 100-Mile Diet struck a deeper chord than anyone could have predicted. Within weeks, reprints of their blog at thetyee.ca had appeared on sites across the internet. Then came the media, from BBC Worldwide to Utne magazine. Dozens of individuals and grassroots groups have since launched their own 100-Mile Diet adventures. In October 2006, Deconstructing Dinner recorded exclusive sessions of the Bridging Borders Toward Food Security Conference held in Vancouver. The conference was organized by the California-based Community Food Security Coalition and Food Secure Canada. Both James and Alisa shared their thoughts about their 100-Mile experience to an audience of Food Security practitioners. This broadcast features their presentation. Additional clips for this broadcast were compiled in September 2006 at the Sorrento Gathering of the BC Food Systems Network. Clayton Thomas-Müller of the Mathais Colomb Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba, Canada, is the indigenous oil campaign organizer for the Indigenous Environmental Network. He works across Alaska, Canada and the lower 48 States of the US with grassroots indigenous communities to defend their human and environmental rights against transnational oil corporations. Clayton has been recognized by Utne magazine as one of the top 30 under 30 young visionary activists in the U.S.. Sue Supriano interviewed him at Bioneers where he was a presenter.Thomas-Muller says that 35% of all fossil fuels found in North America are on or near indigenous lands so corporations and government organizations concentrate on exploiting them and socio-economic conditions are worsening for the people who live near the sites of these nonsustainable energy sources such as oil and gas. Like so many people, some of the leaders go for the money offered them by the corporations and government agencies and things get worse and worse in terms of the toxicity of the land, water, and air where the indigenous people live. He goes into some detail with the example of the proposed oil refinery in Fort Berthold, North Dakota which is already subjected to a huge amount of toxicity due to being close to coal fired power plants. The oil refinery would only worsen the situation. Parents are very concerned for the health of their children on the Reservation. He says that already the amount of oil spilled into the water and polluting it in one year is equivalent to 1,000 Exon Valdez oil spills. Then the oil would go from Fort Berthold to Chicago and would be driven by the oil extracted from tar sands in Native lands in Alberta, Canada. In fact those lands (a huge number of miles and acres) are being ruined by being drilled with water to get a bit of oil, and then the water is polluted to the point of being undrinkable with toxicity from the chemicals from the oil. So it's all connected and continues the long tradition of exploitation of Native peoples and their land.We also speak about climate change and the disprportionate hardship for people of color and poor people. The Houma indigenous group in Louisiana being a current case in point as they were severely affected by Hurricane Katrina and got absolutely no government help whatsoever. The Indigenous Environmental network, when invited by local people, comes in and educates and help grassroots groups to fight this exploitation of the people and their environment and, in the example of the Houma, to help them with basic needs.
