Ben Newman has had a colourful past few years, being one of Animal Rising's co-directors and being arrested multiple times for various bits of direct action and disruptive protest. Now, Animal Rising has turned its attention to campaign against the RSPCA, the world's largest animal charity, for running the RSPCA Assured scheme. This has been quite a divisive campaign within the animal advocacy movement, with some, including both co-hosts, having fairly big questions about the effectiveness of this campaign.00:00:00:00 | Intro00:04:55:02 | Direct Action Rescues00:10:01:20 | Mass Arrests Strategy00:13:40:07 | RSPCA Assured00:19:19:10 | End of Animal Farming?00:28:24:12 | RSPCA Scheme Shutdown00:35:19:01 | Public Opinion on RSPCA00:45:41:18 | Slaughterhouse Investigations00:50:24:08 | Social Media Controversy00:55:36:06 | Animal Rising in 202501:02:29:10 | Closing QuestionsIf you enjoy the show, please leave a rating and review us - we would really appreciate it! In principle, you can take a single cell from an animal and feed an entire village. It's a matter of time. In the meantime, there are alternatives, like fermentation, to produce all kinds of new substitutes that could be better than meat in terms of nutrition and taste. It's so simple it's brilliant! Ask 100 food or beverage entrepreneurs how or why they started their businesses. A Venn diagram of people interested in how AI will shape our future, and members of the effective altruism community (often abbreviated to EA), would show a lot of overlap. One of the rising stars in this overlap is our guest in this episode, the polymath Jacy Reese Anthis. Our discussion picks up themes from Jacy's 2018 book “The End of Animal Farming”, including an optimistic roadmap toward an animal-free food system, as well as factors that could alter that roadmap. We also hear about the work of an organisation co-founded by Jacy: the Sentience Institute, which researches - among other topics - the expansion of moral considerations to non-human entities. We discuss whether AIs can be sentient, how we might know if an AI is sentient, and whether the design choices made by developers of AI will influence the degree and type of sentience of AIs.The conversation concludes with some ideas about how various techniques can be used to boost personal effectiveness, and considers different ways in which people can relate to the EA community.Music: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain DeclarationSome follow-up reading:https://www.sentienceinstitute.org/https://jacyanthis.com/
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Insect farming might cause more suffering than other animal farming, published by ishankhire on November 1, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The edible insect market has been growing and is projected to continue increasing rapidly in the future. There has been significant research pointing to the fact that insects show signs of consciousness, and I think it's important to seriously compare insect welfare interventions with other ones. Brian Tomasik's “How Much Direct Suffering Is Caused by Various Animal Foods?” compares the days of suffering per kilogram of different animals. I'd like to add on to this post by a guesstimate model of where insect suffering may lie in this list. I used cricket suffering to create this model and it's important to note there are differences in the numbers depending on which insects are being farmed—mealworms and black soldier flies likely have a different weight and sentience multiplier. My reasoning for the numbers I used is given in the sheet: if you hover over the fields, you will see a detailed description. The model shows the mean value is 1300 days of suffering per kg of insects consumed, which is twice as high as the highest animal in Brian Tomasik's list (farmed catfish). The median value is considerably lower (35), and the 5th and 95th percentile are approximately 0.32 and 2500. If correct, these estimates suggest that insect welfare deserves a high priority compared to other farmed animal welfare. Here are possible interventions. In addition to legislation to restrict insect farming (such as bans on using insect feed for livestock), I think there could be a lot of value in using insects other than crickets which have fewer neurons and therefore could have a smaller sentience multiplier (like mealworms). Interventions to ban likely more painful methods of killing insects such as boiling could also be impactful. I'd very much appreciate discussion and feedback on the model and where you think it could be improved. I made this model during a one-day hackathon at the Atlas Fellowship. Thanks for listening. This 25-minute interview features the whistleblower from The End of Medicine documentary (on Apple TV and itunes), former pig farm industry veterinarian Dr. Alice Brough in the UK who shares why she quit trying to reform animal ag from within, given its immense systemic problems with animal welfare, public health and antibiotic resistance, environmental racism, and environmental pollution and destruction. As a vegan, she now advocates for animal rights, human rights and public health, and environmentalism, and is pressuring the UK government to make policy changes to prevent future pandemics and continued antimicrobial resistance caused by animal agribusiness practices. https://www.scrapfactoryfarming.org/ Dr. Brough's story is featured prominently in the new documentary The End of Medicine @theEndofMedicine, along with other experts on health and environmental and human rights issues caused by the raising and eating of animals for food. The European Union has pledged to phase out cages for agricultural animals and birds after a long-running campaign and petition signed by 1.4 million people. The new laws are due to come into force by 2027 and EU farmers will be helped by grants to move to new systems. The government here is currently ‘examining the evidence' around the issue - so where will this leave the UK's claim to have the highest animal welfare standards? It's a mixed picture for the fortunes of farmland birds. Some are thriving, helped by agri-environment schemes, but the Briitish Trust for Ornithology says we need many more of them to help bolster the species that are struggling. DSM Animal Nutrition and Health Vice President Christie Chavis discusses the company’s groundbreaking work cultivating a more sustainable animal farming industry and how her experience growing up on a farm in Indiana inspired her to pursue a career in animal production. From her upbringing, Christie was familiar with the cultivation lifestyle of farm animals, but knew there was more to it than meets the eye. Her interest in animal science and technology led her to DSM – a company that is committed to fostering an industry that can meet the nutritional needs of the world’s growing human population. In the episode, Christie and Aaron talk about the company’s scientific foundation to make sustainable animal production possible and how DSM’s #WeMakeItPossible initiative is innovating ways to make more efficient use of natural resources. Animal Recovery Mission's (ARM) investigation at Natural Prairie Dairy stands as the first-ever cruelty investigation into an organic dairy farm in the United States, and the third installment of the largest dairy investigation of all time into Fairlife and Select Milk Producers, Inc. The first two investigations released by ARM were Operation Fair Oaks Farms and Operation Fairlife.Natural Prairie Dairy is located in Channing, TX, and houses over 25,000 cows between its four locations. Over four months, an ARM investigator documented cows stabbed with screwdrivers, kicked and dragged when unable to stand due to illness and fatigue. Cows were repeatedly and violently inseminated and mother cows were witnessed being chased while giving birth, and the babies immediately ripped away from their mothers.Hear the whole story read by Devatha Nair. Can you run an animal-based farm and simultaneously be passionate about animal welfare? Our guest today proves that those two things aren’t a direct conflict of interests. Marissa Paykos of Hardeeville, South Carolina joins us today to tell us all about her farming operation, Whippoorwill Farms. Whippoorwill is a small farm with plans on making a BIG impact! It’s a 40 acre raw plot of land turned into a family farm offering premium fresh butchered chicken, rabbit, and pork as well as fresh eggs and seasonal veggies. Marissa and her husband, James, take great pride in providing a humane environment for the animals on their farm. They are given the opportunity to live their best life and the living conditions there are far above the standard of what most animals experience. Tune in to find out how she built her farm and how she maintains her humane animal farm operation! You’ll hear: An overview of Whippoorwill Farms 1:01 How Marissa found a processor for the rabbit side of the farm 2:36 The layout of Whippoorwill Farms 3:42 About Marissa’s professional background prior to farming and what the transition was like 7:41 How Marissa handled the financial aspect of the farm’s growth 11:18 How Whippoorwill incorporates biochar into their operation 14:26 How Whippoorwill prioritizes important tasks 19:09 What is the hardest part of running the farm is for Marissa 21:40 Who Marissa’s mentors were throughout her farming journey 24:41 How Marissa approaches farm tours 34:17 What Marissa would change in the early stages of her farm 36:22 Who Johnny is and what his role is on the farm 38:25 How Marissa divides roles on the farm 42:49 Where Whippoorwill Farms focuses their marketing efforts 50:11 About farm stays at Whippoorwill 56:19 The story behind their pay-what-you-can produce stand 1.07:01 The biggest mistakes Marissa sees newer farmers making 1.17:12 What kinds of goats are being bred on the farm 1.20:18 Marissa’s favorite farm tool 1.21:35 Where you can find out more about Marissa and Whippoorwill Farms 1.23:46 About the Guest:Marissa Paykos is a first generation farmer in the lowcountry of South Carolina who focuses on land management and regeneration through the use of heritage breed livestock and permaculture on her 40 acre biodiverse farm. With a focus on her community and the environment, Marissa has been changing the game and inspiring many since her start. Marissa farms full time, with her 5 year old sidekick daughter Ellie, who has been by her side or on her back since the farm's inception just 5 short years ago. Marissa also freelances as a website developer and social media manager, as well as helps manage a local weekly farmers market. Marissa’s husband works an off-farm conventional job and has let Marissa take the reins and fully grow her dreams as he cheers from the side. Inspired by the desire to provide a better life for her soon to be born baby, husband, and herself, Marissa and her husband purchased their first piece of raw land of just 2 acres in 2015 that they farmed sustainably. After 2 years of working to build up infrastructure and homestead for themselves they moved to publicly selling in Fall of 2018. After 1 year of selling publicly, in late 2019, they took a leap to grow the business and purchased their new piece of fully overgrown, forests to regenerate. And what does it do with nutrient density and healthcare? Catherine's work focused primarily on disruption in the agriculture and food industries. She is the co-author, together with Tony Seba, of “Rethinking Food & Agriculture 2020-2030: The second domestication of plants and animals, the disruption of the cow and the collapse of the industrial livestock industry". The report shows how the modern food disruption, made possible by rapid advances in precision biology and an entirely new model of production, will have profound implications not just for the industrial agriculture industry, but for the wider economy, society, and the environment. This interview with Catherine might be uncomfortable for some in the regenerative food and ag space, who will struggle to call this real food. Regardless if this is happening as RethinkX claims, I think we need to pay attention to the developments, investment flows and potential impact on industrial animal farming (which would be great), farmers (not so great) and agriculture land (mixed prospects). I had and still have a lot of questions about nutrients, hormones and healthcare implications of these developments. But I also have them about industrial animal farming. So I invite you to listen to the interview, read the report and share your feedback! Aquaculture is the farming of fish. As the fastest growing sector in animal food production, the industry has started to attract the interest of Silicon Valley. This might also be because aquaculture is some 20 years behind traditional agriculture in terms of development leaving it ripe for innovation. We speak with Carsten Krome who is the Managing Partner of Hatch, the first global aquaculture accelerator program operating across Norway, Hawaii and Singapore and an investor into aquaculture with the fund Alimentos Ventures. He provides an excellent introduction to the aquaculture world and what we can look forward to in this space. Carsten has his own entrepreneurial experience through his start-up as a prawn farmer in Malaysia and he holds a Ph.D. in feed science from the University of Stirling as well as a Masters in Marine Biology from the University of Kiel in Germany.

This podcast is of a recent presentation given at the University of Tasmania. "Reese will trace out a roadmap for how humanity is transitioning to the end of animal farming. The timeline has four stages: Foundation, Revolution, Stigmatization, and Follow-Through. Reese will trace out the most important developments of technological and social change in each of these stages, such as the advent of clean meat (real meat made without animal slaughter), a shift in outrage against factory farming alone to outrage against animal farming as a whole, and a shift from individual diet change (e.g. veganism) to a society-wide trend towards animal-free food production. The talk will also explore what in general makes social movements succeed and how the end of animal farming will spark fundamental changes in the human-animal relationship.Jacy is the author of the upcoming book, The End of Animal Farming, which illuminates humanity's upcoming transition to an animal-free food system. This week on Eat Your Words, Cathy is joined in studio by Brian Kateman, President of the Reducetarian Foundation. A vegetarian tired of feeling guilty for eating the occasional turkey breast on Thanksgiving, Brian came up with the idea of reducing but not eliminating meat from his diet. He was inspired by his research on the impacts of animal farming on the environment and human health and became a reducetarian and author on the topic. His book The Reducetarian Solution will be available in stores on April 18.

How do we have a meaningful response to the global environmental crisis? Jeff, Mona and Allen wade through a challenging question this week. From their own skepticisms and personal journeys in relating ethically to the earth, they discuss pandas, waste, animal agriculture, calorie costs, and oceans. They try to wrap their minds around the impact we all have as creatures and consumers within larger global ecosystems. The episode concludes with one of the silliest Knowin’ Jemonen segments yet, where the hosts argue about which animal each person would be if they were an animal.
