Check IT/Round Table: Reviews of Books, Movies, Music, and Other Stuff by the Geek Grls
In this episode of Check It/Round Table Onna discusses BL drama and the three obvious camps with their flags flying and why some of them may want to reevaluate their flags. There is the camp of fan girls who tend to fantasize on the guy actors in the drams, which seems rather bizarre to Onna as in the dramas the guys featured don't end up with any girls, let alone a fan girl. There is another camp of educated women in their late 20's to early 30's who like this genre because of the questions and the strength in the relationships shown in some of the films/series, and the third camp, which just dislikes BL drama for the sake of it being a BL drama. Onna continues the BL digression by discussing why the litmus test for any decision is to judge by the highest material possible and how unfortunately many of the BL genre productions are not of high quality and these should not be used as a litmus test because the judgement is based on the volume of material, not the rarer, quality productions, which is a pity. When making decisions, the jury should judge by the quality material. Onna then considers the Tapas.com thread on this subject, https://forums.tapas.io/t/why-do-you-think-bl-is-so-popular/16364/63, and how the lack of gender wars and the incorporation of good questions are two reasons that many people do enjoy this genre of film. Onna considers how she, like many women, does not like the portrayal of women in film as less than the amazing creatures that we are, and how by picking a BL to watch for funsies, she doesn't have to watch females as leads being illogical creatures and how the characters that do in end together in the higher quality BL shows/films, the couples tend to get together for good reasons, character trait appreciation, comradely, etc. In conclusion, Onna considers how many guys tend to be averse to BL drama and how this is an odd little issue and how if we have a line on something, it may be worth evaluating that line as to why it is there and how we should search out something before we make a judgement on the subject, "It is the honor of Kings to search out a matter. . ." and how we should make our own decisions and make our own lines: love/Life on the line. Onna adds an addendum that the BL dramas from Asia interest her more than North American BL drama it is about the character being gay and goes out looking for another gay individual. Whereas, in the Asian BL dramas, it is about an individual living their life who happens to meet another individual and gradually, over time, because of shared interests/commonalities that are shared, they decide to live their life together. In many ways, this consideration of commonalities the couples share rather than an obsession over sexual orientation, is what makes Asian BL dramas so refreshing over their North American counterparts in BL. It's all here. It's all real. (Originally publishes and released on the Check It/Round Table Podcast in 2020). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onnabob/support

Samsung actually did it! Samsung engineers accidentally leak confidential information while using AI to fix their source code! Plus, SpaceX is gearing up to launch its fully stacked Starship spacecraft for its first orbital flight test, pending regulatory approval. Elon Musk's company is set to take payloads and astronauts to deep space destinations, including the Moon and Mars, with a massive reusable booster known as the Super Heavy. And, Microsoft has introduced a new public preview for its Teams software that boasts a two times faster experience and a new design, with exciting new features like real-time syncing of Microsoft Loop components and avatars with improved performance and lighting. Stay tuned for more updates!00:00 - Intro01:12 - SpaceX's Starship is waiting for FAA approval of an orbital launch attempt11:14 - The new, better Microsoft Teams21:00 - Samsung workers made a major error by using ChatGPTSummary:SpaceX is set to launch its fully stacked Starship spacecraft for a first orbital flight test pending regulatory approval, according to CEO Elon Musk. The spacecraft is designed to take payloads and astronauts to deep space destinations, including the Moon and Mars, and is paired with a massive reusable booster known as the Super Heavy. The Starship had been delayed due to environmental concerns, but the FAA is expected to grant a license for the launch. If approved, the Super Heavy and Starship will launch on April 17th, with the Super Heavy heading to the Gulf of Mexico and Starship traveling into orbit before reentering the Earth's atmosphere and landing in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.Microsoft has introduced a new public preview for its Teams software that boasts a two times faster experience and a new design, which is currently only available for Windows users. The company is working on extending the preview to new teams to a broader set of customers later this year, including education government clouds and platforms such as Mac, VDI, and web. The new features include the removal of the navbar, a much lighter text area, and improvements in performance, rendering pipelines, video quality, multi-account or multi-tenant meetings, streamlining app installation, hardening security, and memory optimization. Teams now includes a real-time syncing of Microsoft Loop components, and avatars have been improved with better performance and lighting, allowing additional customization options. There are also new animated emojis that translate into emote Avatar versions on Microsoft Teams.Samsung engineers at its semiconductor arm unwittingly leaked confidential information while using ChatGPT, an AI writer, to fix problems with their source code. In three recorded incidents, employees inputted trade secrets, such as source codes, internal meeting notes, and hardware data, effectively in the hands of OpenAI, the company behind the AI service. Samsung Semiconductor is now developing its own inhouse AI for internal use, limited to prompts of 1024 bytes. Samsung Electronics warned workers of the dangers of leaking confidential information, which is impossible to retrieve as it is stored on OpenAI's servers. It appears Samsung has no recourse to request the retrieval or deletion of the sensitive data. The EU's GDPR and Italy have banned the use of ChatGPT nationwide due to non-compliance with GDPR.Our panel today>> Vincent>> Tarek >> HenrikeEvery week our panel of technology enthusiasts meets to discuss the most important news from the fields of technology, innovation, and science. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.22.521587v1?rss=1 Authors: Luna, R., Zabaleta, I., Bertalmio, M. Abstract: The development of automatic methods for image and video quality assessment that correlate well with the perception of human observers is a very challenging open problem in vision science, with numerous practical applications in disciplines such as image processing and computer vision, as well as in the media industry. In the past two decades, the goal of image quality research has been to improve upon classical metrics by developing models that emulate some aspects of the visual system, and while the progress has been considerable, state-of-the-art quality assessment methods still share a number of shortcomings, like their performance dropping considerably when they are tested on a database that is quite different from the one used to train them, or their significant limitations in predicting observer scores for high framerate videos. In this work we propose a novel objective method for image and video quality assessment that is based on the recently introduced Intrinsically Non-linear Receptive Field (INRF) formulation, a neural summation model that has been shown to be better at predicting neural activity and visual perception phenomena than the classical linear receptive field. Here we start by optimizing, on a classic image quality database, the four parameters of a very simple INRF-based metric, and proceed to test this metric on three other databases, showing that its performance equals or surpasses that of the state-of-the-art methods, some of them having millions of parameters. Next, we extend to the temporal domain this INRF image quality metric, and test it on a very recent video dataset of high definition, high-quality videos, of standard as well as high framerate, processed at different compression levels, and with thousands of human quality scores. Our results show that the proposed INRF-based video quality metric consistently outperforms, often by a wide margin, the state-of-the-art in video quality metrics. This week we breakdown Netflix's soon to be released AVOD offering and the fact that the video quality is limited to 720p with no ability for downloads. Are consumers willing to sacrifice video quality for price? Will the streaming industry need to re-think how they define video "quality" if consumers are willing to accept 720p as "good enough"? We also discuss Netflix's measurement deals announced with Nielsen, BRB, IAS and DoubleVerify and what this means for advertisers. Have you been wondering how to make the big pivot to virtual events? Are you a complete newbie when it comes to event technology and the virtual event world? As we speak with guest speakers and discuss our own experiences with the virtual and hybrid event industry, we will be going through the challenges you may face along the way and how to overcome these. With the current situation, the rise and requirement for virtual and hybrid events are definitely on the rise - have you made the move yet? Listen to our live podcast every week on our Facebook page, or you can listen to the podcast version to find out how you can make your online events simple. During this weeks podcast, Rhian was joined with 3 excellent guests! Raimonda has over 12 years of experience in B2B, from promotions, multi-media communications to campaign management. Since starting her own business 4 years ago, Rai has been helping ambitious business owners promote their educational events and courses, using organic marketing techniques. Josh and Lawton are both from Ceeblue - Ceeblue is a Live video streaming provider pushing the limits of protocols to achieve sub 1-second video transcoding and delivery (end-to-end). The market requires a quantum leap for Live, interactive video. The demand already exists but most solutions have latency and quality issues. Ceeblue has neither. They transcode and deliver to any device anywhere in the world in under a second (Truly!). During this podcast, we discussed why video quality is so important with the current pandemic and how it can affect the engagement at events. We discussed event marketing and what can be improved with virtual event platforms. It was interesting to hear their views, and how the video quality of events can impact attendees perception of the event. The rise of video marketing (1:25) How Ceeblue have helped video quality with their customers (2:21) How video quality impacts engagement (3:23) Event marketing changes in the industry (4:08) How Ceeblue video can help on any device (6:30) Complexity of virtual events (8:38) Would attendees with live video on help engagement (12:41) How pop ups can help with engagement on virtual events (14:21) EVENTMIND is a market leader in the virtual meetings and events sector. EVENTMIND provides training, consultancy and delivery for businesses looking to engage virtually with their audience and community. You can give us an email on team@eventmindpro.com or alternatively call us on 0330 133 3485. EventMind does not endorse any particular virtual event platform or software. We review the platforms available on the market monthly (through a combination of client feedback, test events and demos). There's no platform which is an ‘all in one' or ‘all inclusive' solution when it comes to virtual event platforms. Bear in mind, most virtual event platforms were originally live event apps or software. Covid19 accelerated many platforms to pivot into creating virtual event solutions. In the long run, this seems to be a smart move as hybrid events are likely to become standard (especially if you understand how to monetize hybrid events and maximise global audience reach).

I'm ashamed to say that while I thought I was watching shows in 4K quality as part of the Netflix Premium plan, turns out I've been watching it at a lower quality all along. This is due to restrictions that Netflix (and Amazon Prime Video) has set on desktop browsers. So if you're someone who consumes Netflix on a browser, you're probably affected by this restriction, but I can tell you how to get around it.

For Hosts who make a Video meeting we strongly suggest for the next few weeks of very high internet demand drop the video quality you set your Web Cam to. ie if using 1080p please drop back down to 720p To do this in the Studio look for the Cog symbol to the right of the main window to bring up 'Settings' Use the dropdown Menu to alter the video quality. Thanks!
Hit ▶️ to hear how this doesn’t impact remote work. Lockdown has been extended to April 11th. This week is all about execution and distilling all of your growth tasks into a weekly checklist. What are you executing this week?

Quick episode as there's not much going on around the tennis world. Clijsters is back from retirement (again), Pospisil drinks more maple syrup, Auger-Aliassime makes the final of Rotterdam but loses to an in-form Monfils. And seriously, why the heck can't the ATP and WTA and any other tennis organization upload good quality video? Not in content, just image quality sucks so much. Just why. There is only one other thing that I would put ahead of the importance of video and that is audio. So often I'll review a video or something someone is asking me to look over and I'll see that audio quality is really great for a first-time creator and makes me really proud as a teacher. But then I take a listen and the audio isn't that bad on a speaker or laptop, but with headphones, is brutal! Today, I'm going to be sharing what to do and the why behind really focusing in on your audio and how it can really impact your video more than that blurry background. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dianagladney/messageSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/diana)

Mark and Dror discuss the video encoding and image science behind what happened in the now infamous S8E3 Game of Thrones 'The Longest Night' episode, which rather than delighting fans, greatly disappointed them by being so laden with video artifacts that it was nearly unwatchable. Want to learn more about this? We wrote an indepth blog post which explores the issues further, you may access it here: https://blog.beamr.com/2019/05/03/game-of-thrones-quality/ To experience the unparalleled quality and performance of Beamr's videoo codecs which are used by some of the largest OTT services in the world, go to: https://beamr.com/free We are always looking for guests to come on the show, email us at thevideoinsiders@beamr.com and tell us what aspect of video encoding or distribution you would like to talk about.
Video Marketing is somewhat the same as making a movie . . . in this way: If you don’t have a good message or a good story to tell, all the video production in the world won’t help you. Your first priority should always be about the quality and clarity of your message. Message clarity is always more important than video quality. Focus on your message and get your video out – even if it’s shot on a cell phone and not edited at all. Support the show (https://KenCollinsMarketing.com)
