Where are all the women in the public realm? There are more statues of animals than named women in London's public spaces. So we look at the first statue of a woman in Parliament Square, Westminster. Listen as we share the story of Millicent Fawcett who, alongside many other women, fought hard to secure women's right to vote. We then take the journey from Westminster to West Hampstead, Camden, where pioneering novelist and educator Beryl Gilroy became one of London's first Black headteachers – at a school that, until recently, was named after a slave-owner. Now, a mural outside the newly renamed primary school where she taught is a permanent celebration of her legacy. Two pieces of eye–catching art tell a multitude of stories – not only of two women's achievements centuries apart, but also of the Windrush generation, London's past links to slavery and empire, and modern-day strides towards feminism. ---------- Presenter: Aindrea Emelife, Curator of Modern and Contemporary at MOWAA (Museum of West African Art). Contributors: Darla Gilroy, Beryl Gilroy's daughter and Associate Dean of the Knowledge Exchange of Central St Martin's; Debbie Weekes-Barnard, Deputy Mayor, Communities and Social Justice; Eleanor Pinfield, Head of Art on the Underground; Justine Simons OBE, Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries; Manasi Pophale, founder of History Speak; Zing Tsjeng, journalist and author of the Forgotten Women series. Produced by Sylvie Carlos. Sound design by Weyland Mckenzie-Witter. Hosted on Spotify. It's an engaging way to get a sense of place and all that the city offers. But, what if we could add the dimension of time, seeing not only the neighborhood as it is, but as it was?In this episode, we explore the underground stops with stories involving the theme of luck. London: a city where fame and fortune may await, given talent, drive, privilege, connections, and sometimes it comes down to luck. Our three stories feature: horseshoes, normally associated with good luck, but not this time, counteracting the bad luck of the number 13, and, when what seems like bad luck can be the best fortune yet. Along the way, we'll visit an iconic location synonymous with luxury and spend time with some of the most famous people in modern history. Follow along on our SHOW NOTES. You'll find photos, recordings, sources, and ways to find us. Enjoy playing Underground Roulette. With a little luck, you'll have a lot of fun!

This interview features the late Camila Batmanghelidjh, and it was recorded and first published on Purposely in July 2020. Camila Batmanghelidjh, Child therapist and charity founder, born 1 January 1963; died 1 January 2024 Obituary - The Angel of Peckham Instantly recognisable in her colourful turbans and kaftans, Camila Batmanghelidjh became a familiar figure in the 2000s, as she toured TV studios to promote her charity Kids Company. Passionate and charismatic, she highlighted the plight of thousands of youngsters in Britain's inner cities, who were being traumatised by poverty, abuse and neglect. She estimated that one in three of those that passed through Kids Company's doors slept on the floor; one in four lived in homes without tables or chairs. Deprived of affection and support, these children, she warned, were at risk of growing up into deeply damaged adults. Her solution was to shower them with loving kindness. At her centres in London, Bristol and Liverpool, children found a daytime home where they could get everything from hot meals to therapy, said The Daily Telegraph. They were given shoes and clean underwear, helped with their homework, and taken to medical appointments. Her aim, she said, was to make unloved children feel worthwhile; and it was a principle that no one was turned away. A formidable networker, she raised tens of millions for her cause. J.K. Rowling and Coldplay were among her high-profile donors; Ruby Wax made a documentary about her; and David Cameron's "hug a hoodie" speech was inspired by her. She was dubbed the "Angel of Peckham". Some questioned whether she enjoyed the limelight a bit too much; but her methods seemed to work, said The Times. Outside observers estimated that in the first few years of its existence, Kids Company had saved 3,000 children from going to jail or committing violent crimes. But as the charity grew (it had 500 employees at one point, and received £46m in public funding), journalists started to question whether her results were as good as she said, and why her charity was being singled out for taxpayer-funded largesse. There were media reports about youngsters being given cash with which to buy designer clothes; and of a young man being sent on a spa break at Champneys. Then, in 2015, the media reported that the charity had mishandled sexual abuse allegations involving its users. In August that year, Kids Company collapsed, and its centres closed. The court praised her dedication, and said Kids Company would have survived had donors not withdrawn, owing to the allegations In 2022, the Charity Commission came to a different conclusion. It criticised Kids Company's "high-risk business model" and failures of oversight in some spending decisions. However, it found that there was no case for regulatory action against any of the key players, and confirmed that there had been no "dishonesty or bad faith". At 11, she was sent to an English boarding school, Sherborne, then took a degree in dramatic arts , before studying psychology at the Tavistock Clinic in London. She spent some time doing social work in south London before starting her charity. After its collapse, she assisted other children's projects, while fighting her legal battles. She was unmarried, and had no children of her own. She said that when she got home to her small flat in West Hampstead after 11-hour days at Kids Company, she was quite glad to be child-free. Batmanghelidjh was unrepentant about her methods: kids who grew up "in ghettos depend on having nice things for their self-esteem", she said. The police found that the sexual abuse claims were unsubstantiated, and in 2021 the High Court cleared her and the other trustees of financial mismanagement. Camila Batmanghelidjh was born, ten weeks premature, into a wealthy Iranian-Belgian family in Tehran in 1963. She weighed 1kg, and was left with an endocrine disorder and neurological problems. "Middle-Aged and Older Patients Report Improved Health with Medical Marijuana"Larry Mishkin discusses a recent study from the University of Florida which shows that medical marijuana use can lead to lower pain levels and reduced dependency on opioids and psychiatric prescriptions among middle-aged and older chronic pain patients. Participants in the study reported improved physical and mental functioning, better sleep quality, and reduced anxiety. The research adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis for pain management..Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast Grateful Dead, October 16, 1989, Melk Weg Club, Amsterdam, the NetherlandsGrateful Dead Live at Club Melk Weg on 1981-10-16 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive Second of two night stand at this famous hash bar that only held about 500 people in the room in which the Dead performed. Very cool and famous club in Amsterdam, one of the best known hash bars. Went there one time in 1988 with good buddies Mikey and H. A highlight of our trip. Another good buddy, Freddie Burp, was spending the school year abroad in the fall of 1981 and was one of the lucky ones who were present for this show. He's a tough guy to get a hold of, but maybe some day I can get him on the show to talk about this concert. INTRO: The Race Is On Track No. 8 1:10 – 2:24 Show had an acoustic first set and an electric second set. Many of the songs in the acoustic set we featured a few weeks ago from the September, 1980 show at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco as part of the recordings for the Dead's Reckoning album. So I went with this one which has always been one of my favorites ever since my good buddy Mikey (who took me to three of my first four shows) used to play it for me as we drove through the northwoods of Wisconsin on nights out from the summer camp where we were spending the summer in 1981. "The Race Is On" is a song written by Don Rollins[1] (not to be confused with the Don Rollins who co-wrote "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" for Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett) and made a hit on the country music charts by George Jones and on the pop and easy listening charts by the unrelated Jack Jones. George's version was the first single released from his 1965 album of the same name. Released as a single in September 1964, it peaked at number three on the BillboardHot Country Singles chart and at number 96 on the BillboardHot 100 in January 1965. Jack's version topped Billboard'sEasy Listening chart and reached number 15 on the Hot 100 the same year. The two recordings combined to reach number 12 on the Cashbox charts, which combined all covers of the same song in one listing and thus gave George Jones his only top-40 hit. The song uses thoroughbred horse racing as the metaphor for the singer's romantic relationships. Rockabilly artist Dave Edmunds, in collaboration with the Stray Cats, whose debut album Edmunds had recently produced, recorded a version for his 1981 album, Twangin.... Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom recalled Edmunds' affection for the song when he was courting the band to produce their debut album: "We met with Edmunds at his house. He had a little pub in his basement. He had a finished basement, outside of London. Edmunds had a jukebox, a little jukebox. He had 'The Race is On' and 'Rockabilly Boogie' by Johnny Burnette. He had those records in his jukebox. We all looked at each other and said, 'This is it.'"[3] Phantom also recalled that the song took "one or two takes" in the studio.[4]Thank you. Covered by: Jack Jones Loretta Lynn Alvin and the Chipmunks for their 1965 album, “Chipmunks a Go Go” Waylon Jennings The Georgia Satellites from 1965 debut album, “Keep The Faith” Elvis Costello And others Dead played it 60times in concert First: December 31, 1969 at Boston Tea Party in Boston Last: May 20, 1995 at Sam Boyd Silver Bowl, Las Vegas SHOW #1: Ripple Track No. 9 1:50 – 3:06 We prominently featured this song form the Warfield show and talked about how it was last played ever on Sept. 3, 1988 at the Cap Center. What makes this version we just listened to so special is that this was the last Ripple played by the Dead until the Cap Center show, a seven year gap, and that that was it, no more Ripple. So this is the last accoustic Ripple ever played since the Cap Center was electric. Maybe the most famous Dead tune ever, from American Beauty, Hunter's lyrics and Jerry's music mesh together in a way to make this tune not just one of the best Dead tunes ever, but one of the best tunes ever, IMHO! SHOW #2: Hully Gully Track No. 12 0:15 – 1:38 "(Baby) Hully Gully" is a song written by Fred Sledge Smith and Cliff Goldsmith and recorded by The Olympics, an American doo-wop group formed in 1957. Released in 1959 on the album, “Doin' the Hully Gully”, it peaked at number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1960[2] and sparked the Hully Gully dance craze. Covered by: Buddy Guy Chubby Checkers The Ventures The Beach Boys Many others Peter Pan Peanut Butter add jingle in the 1980's The Dead's version of this song from this show is the only time they played it in concert. SHOW #3: Gloria Track No. 15 2:15 – 3:45 "Gloria" is a rock song written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, and originally recorded by Morrison's band Them in 1964. It was released as the B-side of "Baby, Please Don't Go” on December 2, 1964. The song became a garage rock staple and a part of many rock bands' repertoires. According to Morrison, he wrote "Gloria" while performing with the Monarchs in Germany in the summer of 1963, at just about the time he turned 18 years old.[6] He started to perform it at the Maritime Hotel when he returned to Belfast and joined up with the Gamblers to form the band Them. He would ad-lib lyrics as he performed, sometimes stretching the song to 15 or 20 minutes. After signing a contract with Dick Rowe and Decca, Them went to London for a recording session at Decca Three Studios in West Hampstead on 5 April 1964; "Gloria" was one of the seven songs recorded that day. Alan Henderson (guitar) contends that Them constituted the first rock group to use two drummers on a recording.[7] Although some sources claim that Jimmy Page played second guitar, other sources deny this. Covered by: The Doors – The Doors performed the song several times in 1966 and 1967, with one recording released on Alive, She Cried (1983). It was also released as a single, which reached number 18 on Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and number 71 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1983.[18] The song is included on Legacy: The Absolute Best (2003) and The Very Best of The Doors (2007). Patti Smith - Patti Smith recorded it for her album Horses in 1975. Based on the Van Morrison tune, the lyrics had been adapted from an early poem, 'Oath'.[5] Smith's band had started to play the song live and merged it with the poem by 1974, so the song contained half of Smith's own words.[5] For the recording of her debut album, Smith and her band recorded the song live and, after mixing, chose it as the album's opener. In 1993, Van Morrison recorded a version with John Lee Hooker, which reached the Top 40 in several countries. For the Dead, this was the first time they played it live in concert. They wound up playing it only a total of 14 times Last played on June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh I was lucky enough to catch it on June 25, 1992 at Soldier Field. SHOW #4: Turn On Your Lovelight Track No. 16 1:03 – 2:33 "Turn On Your Love Light" is a rhythm and blues song recorded by Bobby Bland in 1961. It was both an important R&B and pop chart hit for Bland and has become one of his most identifiable songs. A variety of artists have recorded it, including the Grateful Dead, who made it part of their concert repertoire. was written by band leader and arranger Joe Scott (with an additional credit given to Duke Records owner/producer Don Robey aka Deadric Malone). Scott's brass arrangement "upped the excitement ante"[2] with "the groove picking up momentum as the horns and percussion talk to each other" and Bland's vocal "riding on top". In 1967, "Turn On Your Love Light" became a staple of Grateful Dead concerts, sung by Ron McKernan: a 15-minute rendition is on their 1969 double live album Live/Dead. McKernan's final performance of "Love Light" – complete with extended vocal raps – occurred at the Lyceum Theatre, London, during the Europe '72 tour. Versions with McKernan were often very long due to long vocal raps, instrumental jams, and drum solos throughout. A version performed at the 1969 Woodstock Festival lasted more than 45 minutes.[8] The Grateful Dead later revived the song in the early 1980s with Bob Weir singing. Before this show at the Melk Weg, the last time the Dead had played it in concert was on May 24,1972 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London at the very end of the Europe '72 tour. In other words, this was the Dead's first performance of the song without Pigpen on lead. Dead went on to play it a lot after this show right up until the end. Bobby played it well, but never even tried the rap that Pig made famous in his extended versions. No Box Back Knitties when Bobby sang it. Dead played it 355 times in concert! Originally part of the Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight suite of songs that the Dead played constantly during the primal Dead years in the late ‘60's. First played on August 4, 1967 at the O'Keefe Center in Toronto Last played on June 19, 1975 at Giants Stadium in New Jersey When my good buddy Marc started seeing the Dead in 1984, we joked that every time he went to a show they played Lovelight. Not a bad thing to be associated with. Always fun to hear it in concert even without Pig. OUTRO: Sugar Magnolia Track No. 20 6:30 – 8:05 One of the best Dead tunes of all time and the ultimate show closer. Always nice to add a little Sunshine Daydream to your day! The boys jam the hell out of it here, a 10+ minute version to close out a remarkable one of a kind Dead show. Either you were there or you missed it. What being a Deadhead is all about.

Matt, the Editor-at-Large of Londonist, is probably the most London-obsessed person in the world, reaching parts of the capital others can't reach. In the cause of exploring London, he has waded along the buried River Fleet, spent the night in a haunted plague pit, caught a lung infection by climbing Soho's tallest steeple, and walked along the tracks beneath Leicester Square at 2am. Matt has lived in Blackheath, Borough, Greenwich, Weybridge, West Hampstead, Fortune Green and Chalk Farm. Thanks to the capital's obscene property prices, he's since gone into exile in what he optimistically refers to as “The Future London Borough of Elstree and Borehamwood.” Matt is the author of 12 books, including London Night and Day (2015), Everything You Know About London Is Wrong (2016), and the bestselling/award-winning Atlas of Imagined Places (2021).
During the early hours of Thursday morning 17th March 2022, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe arrived back home in the UK. She was freed after being held hostage in Iran for almost 6 years. She's a British citizen and a charity worker from West Hampstead, London. She was arrested by the Iranian IRGC on 3 April 2016 when she was on holiday in Tehran visiting her elderly parents with her one year old daughter, Gabriella. Almost six years later, three members of Nazanin's family were there to greet her at the Royal Air Force base when she landed – her husband Richard Ratcliffe who's campaigned tirelessly for her freedom and has been on this podcast many times, her now seven year old daughter Gabriella and Nazanin's younger brother, Mohammad Zaghari.Mohammad is one of the unsung heroes of the FreeNazanin campaign. He was in Tehran with Nazanin's parents when she was arrested. He helped raise Gabriella for the three years she was in Iran separated from both parents. He brought Gabriella back to the UK in 2019 and had to leave his entire life in Iran behind because it was no longer safe for him to return home. On this week's episode, we have the honour of speaking to Mohammad himself. He talks about Nazanin coming back home and what it was like to be reunited with her after all these years. Mohammad also talks about dealing with the Iranian authorities when Nazanin was taken, the trauma he experienced, visiting her in prison with Gabriella, the pressure the IRGC puts on the families, the threats, life in the UK, the long recovery journey ahead and what's next for him. We also talk about the other hostages left behind in Iran, going public and Richard's amazing campaigning. You'll also hear voice messages from the loved ones of Nahid Taghavi, Jamshid Sharmahd, Fariba Adelkhah and Kamran Ghaderi – all innocent individuals from Germany, France and Austria still held in Iran. Their loved ones talk about how happy they are for Nazanin and her family as well as what needs to be done to Free Nahid, Free Jamshid, Free Fariba and Free Kamran.Follow Pod Hostage Diplomacy on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with our work.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/PodHostageDiplo)

This week, Kristy and Scott wander back to England in 1909, when a rubber robbery turned into a police chase that's equal parts tragic and hilarious. We've got cops borrowing guns from bystanders a tramjacking that turns into a tramchase, and some seriously inept criminals. Like, "commit a robbery within yelling distance of a police station" inept. All in all, this two hour chase would cover six miles, and the bandits would expend a shocking 400 rounds of ammunition. The V&A was hosting special exhibits about Dior and Mary Quant, but also has a permanent exhibit that includes knitwear. The Fashion and Textile Museum rotates it's exhibits frequently. Even if they aren't showing knitwear at the time, this small museum is very informative! The Fashion Museum in Bath walks you through centuries of fashion through 100 representative outfits, as well as hosting an additional exhibit that changes from time to time. The Mary Quant exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum featured a hand-knit dress surrounded by several of the knitting and sewing patterns Quant created so people could make their own versions of her designs. Some of her knitting patterns are available as PDFs from sellers on Etsy. Three Yarn Shops to Visit The Village Haberdashery is located in the West Hampstead area of London, just a short walk from the nearest Underground station. It focuses mainly on yarn and fabric crafts, but is a great little all-around craft store. Liberty London is well known for their Liberty fabrics, but it's also the flagship store for Rowan yarns. For many of us, this is a rare opportunity to take a gander at Rowan's entire line! My sweater's worth of Erila Knight's British Blue 100 from Wool in Bath, UK. Also, the project bag gifted to Anne by Wool's owner, Laura, as a thank you for contributing hats for The Big Knit 2019. Wool is a cozy, welcoming yarn shop just a short walk from the Bath Spa train station in Bath, England. They have an extensive collection of British yarns, a welcoming staff, and a gentle shop dog names Toby. Be sure to stop by on your way to or from the Roman Baths to give Toby a pat and take the time to peruse their extensive pattern offerings! Upcoming Events April 27, 2019 is Local Yarn Store Day. Be sure to check the listings to see if your LYS is participating. Whether they are officially involved of now, consider swinging by to show some support for your local brick-and-mortar stores that day! For those in New England, April 27 is also the day of the Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival. Anne will be there with her family. Will you? Say hi if you see her there! This weeks creative is Mark Sinckler, London Graffiti’s very own PRIME. Mark is an integral to the path I chose. When I first met him I was 16/17 years old, 1996/7. I was working in a dead end job selling advertising space in an Arabic Newspaper based in West Hampstead. I don’t think I sold one advert but what I did manage to do was to persuade the editor to let me write a piece and interview Mark about his paintings at the time where he was using Arabic text in his murals. It was a blag, I hadn’t written anything other than a tag since leaving school but idea was going to get me to meet a London Don! I’d only been writing graffiti for about 2 years but even then I loved learning about the culture I was getting deeper into and after seeing Primes pieces in graphotism and seeing his a tag of his that stayed for years on one of the tunnel entrances at Farringdon I knew I had to meet this man.. I did, we met in a café on Kilburn High Rd late one mid week night and he was a gent. I wasn’t sure if he knew how old I was or how professional I may have been but he gave me his time and helped me write this piece on his work and they published it, unfourtunalty they didn’t credit me but we know the story and that’s what counts. This conversation and the friendship that blossomed was like getting an enclyclopedia on the culture from one of the top players. One day he brought me to Elk’s house! my mind was blown as Elk had been in my sights since before writing. These interactions with the culture really helped seal my love and dedication to the culture. I had fallen for Hip Hop by say 91/92, really in by 93 but writing came a little later. Kilburn, my estate and the surrounding estates had a lot on offer for someone who’s looking to make a name for himself.. I tried a few things out over the years but Graffiti was the real calling and meeting Mark then, so early on was the inspiration I needed to really get in and live it with direction.
A long awaited catch up with Ben Rebuck. The Chelsea fan who moved to Israel is back in London and is moving to West Hampstead.
