I moved my decreases to the back of the heel, and the result is similar to Basic Biarritz and the Kite Heel, yet is uniquely mine and oh, is it ever sexy. The joy of a well-fitting heel cannot be overstated. The short row method used in Zabava Shorties is still, hands down, the best method I have found for toes. You'll find the method for Jeny's Square Peg Heel here. Cat Bordhi's gusset lessons may be found in her book, New Pathways for Sock Knitters. You can read my notes on Kiba Light on my project page. When Katie first had the idea for this episode, her concept was simple: compare the shapes of the Ouroboros & Moebius with some background regarding their knitting and magical influences, as she and Jim often do. However, as Katie began her research into deepening their connections, it quickly became obvious that there was a much bigger theme at the heart of this circular theme. Even the research seemed to go in a circular path to discover the real story of this episode and as you'll soon hear, it's a lot more deep than either of us anticipated! The timing of this episode ended up being especially meaningful as we remember the amazing Cat Bordhi: inventor of the Moebius Cast On. Learn more about Cat and her legacy in the Show Notes below. Contest, News & Notes I released my latest shawl design- the Boxing Day Bonus Shawl (Ravelry Link). It is a sideways knit garter & eyelet shawl intended to maximize the use of mini skeins, specifically an Advent Mini Skein collection! The shawl is worked with increases in garter stitch stripes up to the center panel. The triangles are formed with German Short rows, then you decrease in garter stripes to finish off. The result is a big, cozy shawl where the rows never get too long and you’re not binding off hundreds of stitches but you still get that polished edge with the mock i-cord effect I use in so many of my pattern. Best of all- the pattern includes links to video tutorials to guide you throughout.  Check out full details on my website or on Ravelry. Tune in for a coupon code only for podcast listeners! You won’t find it anywhere else.  On a Happy Note Monday Nov 30th- we lost power in the evening but Dan and I worked together on getting the Christmas cards addressed and ready to mail! Their hotel was right near the large Church in Rekjavik-Hallgrimskirkja Church. Rekjavik Food Adventures! Marsha and Kim recommend a food tour as a great way to orient yourself to the city and find out about restaurants you can go back to during your stay in Rekjavik. They visited a famouse Hot Dog stand in Rekjavik, had a fantastic Artic Char at Messin, ate Icelandic rye bread, Lava cake, ice cream, and frozen carmel corn.  They bought yarn at a few places including the Handknitting Association of Iceland and FK Supermarket in Iceland. All grocery stores should stock yarn! Wouldn’t that be great?  They went to more yarn stores, including Handprjon Yarn Shop, Litla Yarn Shop, and Alafoss Yarn Shop.  One of the yarns they saw was a Polish hand-dyed yarn called Martin’s Lab Yarn. The tour was originally planned with Cat Bordhi leading it but the tour leader was changed to Janine Bajus, Pattern Designer.  She designed some patterns that the group can knit along the way. They visited Blue Lagoon Iceland and tried a few facial masks.  The group spent a day at Salt Eldhus taking cooking classes while the wind howled outside. The view was beautiful and they were able to see the windstorm while they cooked lunch.  Events Winter Weave Along--Started October 15 in the Two Ewes Ravelry Group. Full notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of  our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com Join the community on Ravelry or become a patron and support the show on our Patreon Page. Kelly’s Projects I’m close to finishing the crocheted sweater! It’s the Habitat Cardigan, crochet cardigan by Jess Coppom. I’m making it with the Lion Brand Heartland that is called for in the pattern. The sleeves are on the hook right now and it should be done by the end of the weekend. I’m still hooking along on the Dew Drop Shawl crochet shawl by Silke Terhorst.  My project is using a gradient handspun that I made from a Loop Bump in teal, purple, and gray. Once the sweater is finished I’ll work on this more and get it finished.  Stashbuster Weaving. Warp problems are fixed! Crowd-sourcing works!  Several listeners helped with this problem. The bottom line is that when warping multiple threads at the same time I need to make sure they don’t twist as I put them on the warping board. Winding onto a warping reel rather than a warping board can somewhat alleviate this problem, it seems. That would explain why the warping process in the video didn’t talk about this potential problem. I could also use a warping paddle as another potential solution. Or I could go back to warping with one or two threads at a time instead of 4.  I finished my Christmas cast-on of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. It was from a fun kit that my mom found at her Joann store. The pattern is by Ann Franklin.  Never Have I Ever Socks--Fix or Nix project: I have resurrected and fixed these instead of nixed. I am knitting them in tandem on dpns and making them longs socks using a larger stitch count to fit on my calves. So far I am really enjoying them. The double sock blank gradient from Invictus Yarns was too beautiful to nix and destash. Marsha’s Projects I finished Shared Rib by Anne Hanson as a cowl and love it! The yarn,  Old Maiden Aunt fingering in the colorway Crimson Lips, is wonderfully soft.  I finished the first sock of my John O Groats Socks and have knit about 2” on the second sock. I’m using Yarns From the Plains fingering weight in the colorway Cumbrian View. I bought the yarn from the dyer at the Caithness Craft Retreat in May. The pattern I’m using is the sock recipe from Nancy Lindberg, NL7 Knit to Fit Socks. I’m getting ready for my Iceland trip from January 17 to February 3. I’m still mulling over what clothes to bring, but I have my projects ready to go! I’ll be bringing a sweater called Seven Sisters by Sarah Pope using Dovestone Baa Ram Ewe from my stash. Pattern starts with a tubular cast on and is straight stockinette until I stop, knit the sleeves and join them to body and begin the yoke pattern. Should be good airplane and talking knitting. Also bringing a shawl, Dusk Into Twilight, by Rosemary (Romi) Hill. I’m using our Two Ewes Fiber Adventures Replenish Rambouillet in fingering weight. It's a  three color shawl and I'll use Falling Leaves (multi), Bourbon and Suede (Rust), and Aquamarine (aqua). I think the pattern will also be good for knitting and talking. Because I was in the mood to cast on a sweater and use my stash, I cast on a second sweater called Isle au Haut Pullover by Beatrice Perron Dahlen. The stash yarn I’m using is Columbia from Imperial Yarns. It will be an unusual project for me: an aran weight pullover with a high collar.  Daphne’s Skull designed by Ellen Sibelius of Wooly Wonders hasn’t been worked on at all since we last recorded. I thought I would set a goal to finish it by Stitches West the end of February. But that’s unrealistic since I will be in Iceland. I will be lucky to get it done in time for the NoCKRs retreat. If I do, I can bring it to Kelly’s and use her washer to felt it.  Giveaway Winners! Fix It or Nix It Winner won a pattern of her choice up to $12.00 Quarterly Patreon Drawing winner won yarn from Quintessential Knits: Intrepid Otter northwest dyer, Superwash merino sock yarn. The "name the listener segment" contest will close at the end of April. Mother Knows Best: (25:20) Gigi and Jasmin discuss color theory. Jasmin likes to buy her blouses at New York and Company. Jasmin suggests using Crayola Crayons for color reference. Gigi's sewing teacher used magenta and orange fabric as coloring calibrators. Gigi discusses blue undertones vs. yellow undertones. Quilters use a color wheel for selecting complimentary colors. Gigi picked up paint chips at a decorating store to use as complimentary color ideas, and then bought yarn in those colors. Jasmin theorizes that we are drawn to colors that look good on us. Jasmin advises against painting your skin. Color wheels are available at art stores, quilting stores, and your LYS. When Knitting Attacks: (37:04) Gigi didn't notice that her Malabrigo (out of Jasmin's stash) was from different dye lots, so she had to frog a ball's worth of knitting, which was especially hard, since she had done a marvelous job splicing both ends of that ball. Also, she sometimes can't count up to four and ended up with two stitches too many in her cardigan. Jasmin's managed to misread and miscound on her Coachella top. On the third try, she finally manages to get it right. She is enjoying the bust shortrowing. Straw into Gold: (45:24) Jasmin has bought more plastic bobbins. The "romney thing" is made up of one ply of each of the following: burgundy romney (from Morro Fleece Works), light silver Lincoln/Corriedale, gunmetal grey Lincoln/Corriedale, and a strand of natural black romney that Gigi is coveting. Jasmin is planning to full this four colored yarn to make it bloom. There is a video of her doing it on YouTube. She is planning to spin this more lofty so it will be softer with a soft haze. CORRECTION: Jasmin misspoke. Worsted spun yarn is durable and long wearing, not woolen. She is spinning Tallulah (a merino fleece) worsted so that it can be knitted into the Mariah cardigan. Also, she is spinning Suzie Q from Crown Mountain Farms. Jasmin's fleeces from Boonville and the Monterey Fleece Auction are arriving. Shearing season is rapidly approaching, and Jasmin will be talking about how to pick a good fleece in future episodes. Also, next week, listen for a special "Easter Egg" for our listeners: an interview with Galina Khmeleva, author of Gossamer Webs: The History and Techniques of Orenburg Lace Shawls.

Jasmin finished her pair of Ellen's Half-Pint Farm socks (out of the Merino/Tencel sock yarn) in the greens. Jasmin is "chain-knitting" her socks. She cast on the Creatively Dyed Calypso (80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon) in the Jamaica colorway. The color reminds Jasmin of Lisa Souza's South Pacific colorway. Gigi is working on a former UFO - she is working on her white Einstein jacket again. Jasmin and Gigi discuss knitting with neutrals for "lasting" garments. (You can see the "Mimosa yellow" shawl here.) They discuss balancing fashion and timeliness with how long it will take to finish the project. Jasmin talks about Tim Gunn's 10 essential items list and how to encorporate that into your knitting. Jasmin and Gigi will be swatching this week! Gigi will be swatching some of the Tess Yarns' Silk and Merino (in charcoal grey) for a Cocoknits design. Jasmin has some of the same yarn, but in a pale blue from a few years ago. Jasmin is using it for the Cire-Perdue from the third Norah Gaughan book. Gigi brought over a children's loom so that Jasmin can determine whether or not she really, really wants to weave. CONTEST! Go into our Ravelry group and suggest show topics in the "What do you want to hear about?" thread. Mother Knows Best: (26:04) Gigi and Jasmin discuss matching yarns and patterns. Vanilla socks are a great way of testing new techniques (like the channel island cast-on). We also encourage you to treat your swatches the way you would treat the garment. When Knitting Attacks! (33:26) Gigi has been too efficient with her knitting, and ran out of on-the-go vanilla socks. Cat Bordhi is a genius, and Jasmin is not, and proves it while working on a pair of Coriolis socks. (The test drive pair is in Myra Hansen's Fancy Image Yarns sock yarn.) Jasmin notices the correlation between knitting attacks and the hours in which they happen. Also, her complete inability to do math into the late hours of the evening. Straw into Gold: (40:50) Jasmin is spinning 70% Alpaca/30% Silk roving from Abstract Fibers in a deep, rich blue/black colorway. Jasmin talks about showing surface area and shine while spinning, spinning posture, and is honest about how she feels about spinning cotton. Jasmin recommends taking a beginning spinning class from Sandi Luck (at Purlescence) if you're in the Bay Area, and any spinning class from Judith MacKenzie McCuin. (Next week, Jasmin will talk about cleaning spinning wheels.) Jasmin talks about spinning merino/silk batts from Crystal Creek Fibers for Gigi (pictured above). Jasmin talks about using a Fricke skeinwinder with a yardage counter. Jasmin also had spun up some of the Fat Cat Knits 50% SW Merino/50% tencel roving in Spring Bulbs. Jasmin also talks about winding up the Black Magic Woman that she had spun up and was still resting on the bobbins.

Jasmin thinks it is going to grow up to be a Ribbi Pulli. Jasmin also got some Superwash merino in "Graphite". After the market, Jasmin, Gigi, and Rosemary (from Designs by Romi) went to the party at Bobbin's Nest, which was lovely. Afterwards, we took a brief detour to get some AMAZING frozen yogurt, then went to the show-and-tell at Purlescence. Sunday: Jasmin and Gigi took the "Design Your Own Sock Architecture" class with Cat Bordhi, who we chatted with in September. Combined with the Lucy Neatby class, our minds were blown. Jasmin went to the show floor to pick up some Oak Grove yarn (to darn a pair socks) for Andrew. Jasmin went to talk to Cheryl Oberle, and while Andrew was waiting in line to pay, he picked up two skeins in "Stones". Jasmin also picked up some of the Creatively Dyed sock yarn to test drive, NOT in pinks and purples, selected by Andrew. Gigi bought some Silk/Merino from Tess Yarns in a beautiful charcoal grey, which will become a Cocoknits sweater. (Sweater TBD.) At the show, Jasmin and Gigi got audio with Lucy Neatby, Galina Khmeleva, Cheryl Oberle, and Lily Chin. Administrative stuff: Jasmin and Gigi are trying to get to Sock Summit, and they need your help. A donation of $5 or more gets you a logo magnet, and for a donation of $10 or more, we'll send you a logo pin (and a magnet). We will be adding a new segment called "Straw into Gold" about spinning! Jasmin is working on the second vintage Lisa Souza sock (in The Sea). She is SO CLOSE to finishing test knitting a sweater for Sandi (from Purlescence). It is knit in Manos silk/wool, in a lovely olive green. The Knitmore Girls advise against knitting yourself into hand pain. It's not worth it, and it's bad for you. If you develop hand pain, please see a physician. Jasmin has been doing a little spinning. She is spinning up some of the Crown Mountain Farms Superwash merino in "Atlantis". It's lovely. (If you're not a spinner, Crown Mountain sells handspun sock yarn. You can find it here, but know that you'll be waiting a bit if you order it. Tell Klaus we say hi!) Contest! We'll be running our "Do some good" contest through January 1st. Give of yourselves either on a global level, or a local level and send us an e-mail about it. (If you give to Doctors Without Borders, please CC us on the email you send to Stephanie.) We have THREE signed copies of Free-Range Knitter. We will be airing our chat with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (aka, The Yarn Harlot) in Episode 28, airing on 11/23/2008. Announcements: The Yarn Thing/Knaked Knits KAL-CAL deadline has been extended to Thanksgiving (November 27th). Mother Knows Best: Cast on a few "brainless" knitting projects for on-the-go knitting. (During the holidays "high bandwidth" projects seem to fall by the wayside.) When Knitting Attacks: Gigi recommends reading your notes. Carefully. She also recommends following directions carefully when you're executing a new technique for the first time. Review: Custom Knits by Wendy Bernard. This is a fabulous book. (DO NOT let anyone make a duct tape dummy of you. You've been warned.) We love it. Do yourself a favor, get your hands on a copy. Jasmin is going to knit the "Favorite Cardigan" with the pink cashmere. (Jasmin engineered underarm gussets for the Gold Bullion Sweater and the Rugby Pinup Sweater.) (Apologies for the squeaking in the background, Elphie decided this segment was a great time to play with her squeaky toys, and chase her tail, and we were hoping that the mics wouldn't pick it up. Niki, on the other hand, was very quiet.) [As an aside, the awesome hair stuff Jasmin uses is "DevaCurl". They also have a line for people with straight hair called "DevaCare", but we haven't used that one.] [Sorry, no links for the "Green Shruggy Thing". I'll look in my magazine stash and see if I can dig up the name and a picture of it in Ravelry.] Gigi loves the "HOAX Fashion Formula" book from the '80s.

On the Needles: Gigi finished her Icarus! Also, the Knitmore Girls need to do some serious blocking (including Gigi's "Flamingo Feathers" (really a Peacock Plumes shawl made in pink Malabrigo laceweight) and "Fischu". Jasmin is still working on her Day-Glo sock #2 and her Mushroom Caps sock #2, and has finished the spinning for her (future) toe-up rainbow socks. Jasmin is also spinning a batt from Crystal Creek Fibers (silk and ramboullet) for Gigi. She's also finishing a sweater for Sandi (at Purlescence Yarns). Gigi is working on her Neck Down Wrap Caridgan. She's still working on the Coriolis, Upstream socks, and the Zig Zag Slip Stitch socks. Tika started her NaNoSweMo sweater (Selina from Rowan) out of felted tweed. The girls decided that finishing UFOs feels good. (Jasmin's zippy UFO boxes can be found here.) Contest! Submit your knitting jokes/limericks by November 7th. Winners will be announced in Episode 26. The prizes are a signed copy of Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitting (Book One) and A Treasury of Magical Knitting. When Knitting Attacks: We talk about taking on too much holiday knitting, baking, and sewing. Mother Knows Best: Only knit for people who desperately beg for knitted gifts. If people don't beg, they won't appreciate it. (The cashmere socks were the Whitby socks from Knitting on the Road, and Jasmin used the charcoal grey Grignasco cashmere.) This year, Gigi is knitting a Sharks hat for Sam (the Knitmore Boy) out of the Claudia's Handpaint worsted in "Sharks". Instead of giving kids knitted gifts, give them the gift of time, or books! Announcement: NaNoSweMo - National Sweater Knitting Month. Now is a great time to knit a first sweater, and Jasmin recommends starting with a baby sweater. NaNoWriMo - National Novel Writing Month If you're a US listener (who is eligible to vote) go and vote on Tuesday! We're taking on official sponsorship. Promote your patterns or your Etsy shop! Send us an e-mail for details. You can see us posing for Brenda Patipa's "On the Vine" in Ravelry!

Announcements: New equipment! Now we should sound as dulcet as Brenda Dayne. (Please send us any feedback you have about the sound.) Marly (from the Yarn Thing Podcast) and Sydney (from the Knaked Knits Podcast) are hosting the Holiday KAL-CAL. (Last year's Holiday KAL-CAL podcast can be found here.) Changelings Knit and Stitch - Go and listen! On The Needles: Gigi is still working on her Zig Zag Slip Stitch socks from the Little Box of Socks Jasmin has finished her first Day-Glo sock (which is the same yarn as Gigi's contrast color for her ZZSS Socks), and started the second sock. The Social Pressure Experiment is going well. In addition to the 25 lbs of yarn that Jasmin got rid of last weekend, she's purged another 3 big bags. Tika finished her Elphaba Knee Socks, and got wine when we went to Unwined to listen to Juanita sing with the Jack Conway Trio. Gigi has been purging knitting bags. Jasmin likes her good bags (like the Amy Butler bag, or the Tom Bihn bag - especially the sock baggie), but noticed that she's always using the canvas bags from individual vendors. Gigi wants to hear from you: what makes an optimal knitting bag. Jasmin's Lily of the Valley shawl caught on the velcro in her work bag. Jasmin is a little over halfway done with spinning the yarn for her rainbow socks. Mother Knows Best: Our friend, Ursula is knitting her husband a sweater with a bunch of texture, and was unsure as to whether the neck decreases would work out correctly. The solution? A neck swatch! To do a neck swatch: Figure out the total number of neck decreases. Add a few stitches to that. Follow directions for neck decreases. It really works. When Knitting Attacks: Technology attacked, and the end result? New recording equipment for the podcast. Gigi cast on a sock out of the Tess' Yarns sock yarn (which Gigi and Jasmin both loooove!), and neglected to swatch. The sock was eeeensy weensy! Jasmin should not do math for a Cat Bordhi sock at 11PM. When will I ever learn?! Thanks! Your donations help the podcast run, so thanks a MILLION! Contest: The Cat Bordhi knitting joke & limerick contest deadline has been extended to Friday, November 7th.  Send us your limericks and jokes! A limerick looks like this: We host a knitting podcast, Which normally is a real blast. When technology fails, Jasmin weeps and she wails, With Gigi watching nearby, aghast.

On The Needles: Gigi and Jasmin went to the Rosicrucian Museum and admired ancient textiles. [Our friend there was Karenzknitknacks, not Karenbynight.] Jasmin finished her Baby Surprise Jacket, and her Sirius socks. She is casting on a new pair of handspun socks out of Pigeonroof Studios "Mushroom Caps." Gigi is knitting a "vanilla sock" out of Lana grossa Meilenweit in color 5565 (it looks like Trekking), with a Strong Heel (from the Little Box of Socks). Jasmin is working on a sweater for the Purlescence gals (one of their original designs) out of the Manos Silk and Wool. Jasmin finished the spinning on her Pigeonroof Studios Superwash Blue Faced Leicester in "Violet Cherry." Gigi is knitting the Knitting Pure and Simple Wrap Cardigan in Cascade Venezia. When Knitting Attacks! Jasmin had technology go terribly awry when trying to load the video of the sheep shearing onto the computer. As promised: Gigi had killer dust bunnies (with BIG TEETH!) in her sewing machine. Mother Knows Best: When you're done sewing, take the little brush, and tidy up your machine. A keyboard vaccuum and compressed air also work nicely for sewing machine maintenence/clean-up. Ursula bought Gigi this magnetic light for her sewing machine! Jasmin loves continued education, and she and Gigi will be taking a class from Cat Bordhi in Lafayette, CA on Saturday, September 27th at Yarn Boutique.  The Stitches West class catalog is up! Events: Saturday, September 27 & Sunday, September 28th: Cat Bordhi's classes at Yarn Boutique! Saturday, October 4th- The Yarn Harlot. Copperfield's Books in Santa Rosa.

Double-pointed needles, two-circular needles or one long circular needle? In the old days, you didn’t have the luxury of matching a knitting style to your project or your individual idiosyncracies. Now you can choose classic DPN instructions from books like Sensational Knitted Socks. Try using two circular needles using Cat Bordhi’s Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles or even just one long circular, or Magic Loop, with the help of Bev Galeskas. What are the pros and cons of each method? How do they each work? Is one method really that much easier than any other? When does your project dictate which method you should use? Hopefully, I will shed some light on the questions raised by being lucky enough to have so many options.
