NEW MOON & Partial Solar Eclipse - wow. Eclipse season is real. What a powerful time to be alive. In this episode I talk about the energies that I perceive are going on in the world right now. And it's all getting more and more intense: we bring cycles to and end. Reflect on what you were doing and feeling six months ago when we had the Total Solar Eclipse in December. If it helps I include the New Moon Musings episode (#92) below. It's good to go back and reflect. Things might make more sense now, and a lot of things are coming full circle. A popular topic I life coach moms on is their relationship to their stuff and decluttering their home. I wanted to share a Q+A time for more questions about decluttering. I asked for your decluttering questions in the Simple on Purpose FB group and on Instagram. Here is my life coaching advice on these topics. Here are the decluttering questions I am answering today: How do we begin when it all just feels so overwhelming? For instance: if I start decluttering A, I first have to do B, but to do B and I have to do C, but to do C...and the spiral continues until I give up and sit on the couch. FULL TRANSCRIPT (unedited) Hey friends, it's Shawna, your nerdy girlfriend and life coach from simple on purpose.ca Welcome to the simple on purpose podcast. The quick and easy and I hope fun podcast for you busy moms on the go. You want to just take a hot minute, slow it down, get re centered on the things that matter to you. So you can make space and time and energy for the life that you want instead of the life that's just happening on autopilot. Welcome to spring friends, I just went for a walk with my bestie we walked her along the river, it was blue skies and sunshine. And it was just so nice to see her face. And I think we're all experiencing this past year has really put our relationships into a whole new spin. And we see each other so much less, and I just miss her so much. I'm texting, it just cannot beat talking to your friends faces. So I hope that you find a way to see your friends faces this week, lined it up, go for a walk, meet somewhere outside, just go see your friends faces it makes such a big difference. Alright, let's get into today's q&a on decluttering. I asked in the Facebook group, the simple on purpose community group, which if you aren't part of you should totally join by the way. And I also asked on Instagram, what your questions were for me around decluttering. So I'm going to jump into those. The first one is how do we begin when it all just feels overwhelming. For instance, if I start decluttering a, I have to do B and then to do b i have to do see. And this, this spiral continues until I give up and sit on the couch. relatable, right? I totally understand this. Like, I want to declutter the kitchen, but I need space in the hall closet for those extra dishes. And if I need to make space in the hall closet, I need to move towels in the bathroom, which means I need to declutter the bathroom. Right? So to me, the obvious dancer is to follow the spiral all the way down. If I follow this all the way down, where does it tell me that I should logically begin? And I think most of us know that on the surface like okay, maybe I'll start with the bathroom. But the problem is now that we've gone through all of that mental energy, figuring out what we need to do, that actually feels like real action to our brain. As we're visualizing it and thinking about what else needs to get done. Our brain thinks that work is actually getting done...
Interview with Carli Genet At some point in our adult lives, most of us have experienced a situation where we felt our emotional response was stronger than we anticipated. Ever wonder why that happened? In today’s episode, Erin sits down with Carli Genet, MSW, LICSW to unpack the concept of mental health healing by starting at the roots. If you’ve been here a minute, then you already know that the key to optimal health extends far beyond just diet and exercise. Erin and Carli discuss EMDR therapy, how and where memories are stored, big and small traumatic experiences, attachment styles and why tracing back to the roots for healing is often considered the emotional equivalent to functional nutrition work. If you’ve ever had an experience that triggers a stronger reaction than you thought it should, or notice certain situations seem to cause a stress response that you can’t easily shake off, then this is definitely an episode to tune into. Carli is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of NH and graduate of the UNH Masters in Social Work program. She chose to pursue a degree in social work because in addition to wanting to help people on individual levels, she has always been motivated to understand and effect change within larger powers at play. In fact, she often considers therapy to be a form of emotional activism. Carli offers individual, couples and intensive EMDR therapy for adults. She incorporates both physical and mental treatment modalities including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Eye Movement Desensitization (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Interventions, Motivational Interviewing, meditation, mindfulness and yoga. In this massive 3 hour bonus theology episode, Suan Sonna argues that it can be shown from the scriptures that the Roman Catholic doctrine of the papacy is true - Christ established a supreme, infallible, and successional Petrine ministry. Sonna builds his massive case on sources from primarily Protestant and Orthodox scholars, demonstrating that the tide of New Testament scholarship is gradually affirming certain traditional Roman Catholic interpretations of the scriptures. He first defends the Davidic and apostolic constitution of Christ's Church, raises four arguments for the existence and supremacy of a Petrine ministry, five reasons from scripture and its Jewish roots to accept magisterial (and papal) infallibility, and explains why Rome matters according to Jewish messianic prophecies. Sonna concludes that Roman Catholicism is true, because it is the only conception of Christianity that truly completes what Judaism started. THREE TAKEAWAYS FROM 10 MOTHERSDr. Jennie Zolman is an optometrist and owner of the Draisin Vision Group in Charleston, SC and is a mom to three. She serves as a chair of the American Optometric InfantSEE and Children’s Vision Committee. InfantSEE is the October sponsor for 3 in 30, and we are so honored to be partnering with this incredible organization. Dr. Zolman is sharing her top three takeaways about infant and children’s vision: Early eye exams (between 6 months to 1 year old) get babies’ eyes ready for learning. For school-aged children, be sure to have a yearly comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist. Many learning problems can be attributed to vision problems, yet this is rarely considered. Give your kids' eyes a break from screens. Remember the 20/20/20 Rule: for every 20 minutes on a screen, take 20 seconds to look at something 20 feet away. www.infantsee.org (http://www.infantsee.org) Instagram: @infantsee (https://www.instagram.com/infantsee/) *** Mary Pugh lives in Draper, Utah with her five kids ages 7-15. Make a list of the things you value most for your family, and see if the activity in question fits in. Try something else, and remember there is more than one way to accomplish a goal. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This topic was inspired by my recent walk on the Ridgeway National Trail, where I was away from computers and emails for just over a week. I came back to the office feeling rested, refreshed, and ready to get going on my work. It was like a total reset for my mind, even though I wasn't completely offline – I did use my iPad to type up my book chapters each evening, and I did use my iPhone to take photos and upload them to Instagram. Still, it was brain-changing. In this episode, I talk about how you can create a digital detox plan that works for you. Interview with Professor Dali Kaafar, Executive Director of the Optus Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub, in his role as a co-researcher into making privacy recommendations as the Australian government explores the use of contact tracing mobile apps as a tool for public health officials and communities to fight the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. With Dr Hassan Asghar (Macquarie University), Dr Farhad Farokhi (University of Melbourne), and Associate Professor Ben Rubinstein (University of Melbourne), Professor Kaafar released a paper highlighting that the Government must not ignore privacy concerns and implications of TraceTogether or similar apps that may be rolled out in Australia. The researchers have made the following privacy recommendations: The app can be tweaked to provide more privacy from the Central Authority. The temporary user IDs can be generated locally by the app, instead of the server. This way, no one except the users know their identity, and they have to provide informed consent to the server by sharing the list of their temporary IDs for their private data to be used. When a user tests positive for COVID-19, the server can find the temporary IDs that have been in contact with the infected user and broadcast them. When they receive a message that contains their temporary ID, users can respond by identifying themselves. This functionality can be implemented either as a specific consent request to individuals or as an automatic response to identification requests if individuals opt in for self-identification. Future versions of the app need to be more decentralized. The server can push the temporary ID of diagnosed users to the apps and other users can locally determine if they have been in contact with them. If the IDs are locally and randomly generated, they are not linkable to true identities. This way the server does not know the identities of the users who were in close proximity with the infected user. This provides higher privacy against the server. This is not an easy fix and requires a fundamental change in the app’s design which might not be possible to be implemented rapidly. Future releases of anonymised data logs must be restricted. An important aspect of data gathered by the server is future use by epidemiologists and policy makers. Although the information seems innocuous, it can be very sensitive and reveal a lot about the users. So it should not be shared publicly even if anonymized. This is because a large percentage of the people might share their data. Even the contact graph, without locations, timestamps, phone numbers or explicit identities, can be linked to other data sources enabling user reidentification. Digital technologies promise to greatly improve our ability to flatten the COVID-19 curve. Privacy is an enabling technology that can enhance rates of adoption of critical digital infrastructure such as mobile-based contact tracing. We encourage governments nationally and internationally to consider how privacy and data can be managed together, when tracing this significant global pandemic. Recorded 15 April, 2020, Sydney. In today’s episode I’m answering your questions about Snapchat, birthday fundraisers on Facebook…and more! If YOU have a question you’d like me to answer, send me an email– just click on contact, or you can always send me a message on Facebook or Instagram. Here’s the first question… Question: I know people have different opinions about this, but how many hashtags do you recommend an organization typically use on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linked In for our posts? Answer: Well, you’re right - there are differences in opinion on the topic of hashtags! It varies depending on which platform you’re using. On Instagram, there is a 30-hashtag limit on a post. You’ll have to experiment to find out what works for you. Try using 10 hashtags, 20, or 30 hashtags and then look at the insights for that post to see what your numbers tell you. Every audience is different. Personally, I’ve seen using 30 hashtags gets me more engagement and more views on my Instagram posts. TIP: Always use relevant hashtags to the topic to make it easier for your audience to find posts. On Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn: you might use the “less is more” approach. Use 1 or 2 hashtags for those platforms. Make them relevant to your post: For a post about Veterans Day, your hashtag could be #VeteransDay or if you’re posting about a festival, your hashtag could be a twist on the name of the festival like #SpringfieldFallFest. Using a hashtag specific to your organization or your brand? Be consistent and use the same hashtag repeatedly. That makes your hashtags effective. Question: I have been asked to use certain sponsors’ hashtags in addition to all our own when posting. To be clear, the sponsor hashtags aren’t relevant to all posts, but I have been asked to use them. We have five of our own hashtags we currently reference on all posts without even including sponsors (which can add six to ten more. I feel all the hashtags are overkill and may bog the post down. I know you can use up to 30, some folks suggest just six at most, but Facebook says sometimes six is too much and it should not be more than two. What say you? Answer: Use as few of the sponsor hashtags as you can and put them at the very bottom of your post. For Instagram, leave your multitude of hashtags as a comment below your post – it’ll keep things looking clean. With your hashtags in the Instagram comment section when it posts to Facebook simultaneously all those hashtags don’t show. If you want to see how well your hashtags are working for your posts, check out Episode 12: How Many People Have REALLY Seen Your Post? Question: Lauren, how can we get more people to have birthday fundraisers on Facebook for our nonprofit? Answer: Birthday fundraisers on Facebook are a nice idea. Make sure you message the people setting up the fundraiser and get their address so you can send them a handwritten thank you note. Be grateful. There are two reasons you don’t want to depend on Birthday Fundraisers. They don’t build a relationship with donors. Relationship is the most important thing for fundraising. In a birthday fundraiser on your behalf, you only form a real relationship with the host of the birthday fundraiser, but not with the people who donate to the fundraiser. The key to WHY people donate and continue to donate is that they know, like and trust you. Relationships build the “know, like and trust factor.” No customer service: Facebook doesn’t have a customer service hotline where you can just call and resolve an issue. Facebook has glitches. There are lots of stories out there about people not being able to receive their money from fundraisers. You wouldn’t want your donors to give thinking their money is being put to good use, but it winds up in Facebook limbo instead, would you? Here’s what you can do instead of a Facebook fundraiser - focus time planning and preparing for your next real-life, non-Facebook fundraiser. Stay in touch with your donors via your email newsletter. Nurturing that relationship with your donors over time will pay off in the end – better and more sustainably than any Facebook birthday fundraiser. Related: Episode 28: Raise More Money in 2020 With These Tips Question: Lauren, I’ve seen pictures of you and your mom together on Instagram, both of your skin is amazing – what’s the secret?? Don’t say good genes. Answer: Hahaha! Oh geez…I can’t speak for my mom, but for me… I just drink an utterly ridiculous amount of water. I live at high altitude where there are practically negative humidity levels year-round, and I’m pretty sure if I wasn’t constantly hydrating, I might shrivel up and blow away like a dried leaf. I also take a daily multivitamin – just a women’s formula – and I try to get enough sleep and eat healthy. I did just start using an oil and a moisturizer by a company called Pai – it’s made for super sensitive skin, which I have – and I really like it so far. But really, I think water and sleep are probably the two most important factors. Since my skin is so sensitive - I can’t use a lot of products because almost everything causes a bad reaction, so I take care of my skin from “the inside out” and take a lifestyle-based approach. From my mom: Thanks to whoever made that comment! Yes! Drinking lots of water is important. But another thing is that I’ve always washed my face at night. When I was young, I used a soap like Dove and as we had more money, I used higher priced face cleansers-drug store and more upscale products. I think the important thing is having a clean face when you go to bed because it’s a great way to have a long time of rest for your face. I live in the Deep South, so there’s lots of humidity and that always helps. When I was a kid, we went water skiing every weekend with no sunscreen – yikes – but here I am with the skin I have, so I do have to say genes has some to do with it. The main thing is to take basic care of your face – keep it clean, moisturized, drink lots of water. Question: Hi Lauren – I manage Facebook and Instagram accounts for our nonprofit. Do I need to be on more social media platforms than that? People always say Snapchat is where the young people are and that’s who we’re trying to reach, but I have no idea how to use it and honestly, I don’t have time to do more than what I’m already doing with Facebook and Instagram. What do you think? Do I need to be on Snapchat or something else besides Facebook and Instagram? Answer: We’ve all heard people say “all the young people are on Snapchat” – and they might be, but most of them are also on Instagram and yes, even Facebook. Your nonprofit should have an active presence on Facebook and Instagram, and if you have time for other platforms, that’s a bonus. It’s hard managing a multitude of social media platforms, and if you want to do it well, you want to make sure you’re not spreading yourself too thin. Do what you can focus on and do that well. Remember, showing up for your audience consistently and meaningfully – being extra clear about what you have for them and want them to do is what matters most. TIP: Find out where your people spend time on social media and put your mind at rest. This will help you figure out where your social media priorities should be… On a little slip of paper, copy and paste the following question as many times as you can and cut it into strips. Repeat as often as necessary. When the people you serve come through your door, give them a little survey. Here’s the question: “Which social media do you use the most?” Then, collect survey responses for 6-8 weeks and tally the answers. You’ll get a great picture of what social media they’re using and where you need to be focusing your efforts. Notice that the question isn’t “Do you use Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat?” Make sure to leave the survey an open-ended question so they can answer what comes to their mind first. This is the question: “Which social media do you use the most?” You can do this at events or when you speak – you get the idea. Do this and I promise, it will help you find out where your people spend the most time on social media. If you have any questions – I’m right here for you! Ask away! Listen to our podcast on the GO! SUMMARY This is Part-2 of the series where we'll cover how to get started in Wholesaling, Flipping, and Buy and hold. In episode 41 of An Investors Journey Podcast, I want to cover How To Get Started With Flipping! WARNING: We have met so many people that for one reason or another they want to start their real estate journey in flipping. This we believe is a very big mistake. Flipping is one of the riskiest, most advanced strategies in the real estate space. All of the risks associated with flipping houses cause many first time investors to lose their a$$. This tends to scare them away from investing in real estate altogether which we feel is another big mistake. This is also an issue for more seasoned investors too because they feel they know more than a new one. This causes them to make simple mistakes that end up costing thousands! All of that being said, IF you still want to do it here's how to do it correctly. In this episode I will cover: Things to keep in mind when flipping How to correctly analyze a deal before buying Determining TRUE value Setting up SOW Funding The actual flip process Getting contractors Buying/Sourcing materials Remembering to budget in the exterior The sale process Pre-listing Staging Photos Listing the house Finding the right agent Speed matters A BONUS Tip!! Listen to this episode a couple of times along with the episodes in Related Episode section below to become better prepared when flipping houses. Check out this episode and please share it with someone you feel would benefit from it. As always, if you have any questions just ask! Enjoy! DID YOU KNOW? Dave Overlund and I have similar backgrounds. We both grew up as big sports fans in Minnesota and pursued a career in sports broadcasting while studying at St. Cloud State University. Dave has stayed on that path, working in radio in St. Cloud for several years. In December, when St. Cloud State cut its football program, I took notice to an opinionated article Dave wrote about the sudden decision. It expressed a sentiment shared by many and called out some of the decision makers at the University. https://accadandkoka.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Bob-Murphy_2017-1-e1560975045893.jpg ()Robert P. Murphy, PhD It is commonly believed that healthcare is a sector plagued by “market failure.” A heavy dose of government intervention is therefore necessary to optimize the needs of society. A paper most commonly cited in support of that view is one published in 1963 by Nobel Prize winner Kenneth Arrow, one of the giants of economic theory in the 20th century, and titled “Uncertainty and the Welfare Economics of Medical Care.” But how does economic theory arrive at the concept of market failure and how do economists conceive of health care when they apply their theoretical models to medical practice? To help sort this out, we have as our guest Robert P. Murphy, economist, teacher, and author of many books. Dr. Murphy obtained his PhD from NYU and is Senior Fellow at the Mises Institute. He is co-host, with Tom Woods, of the popular podcast Contra Krugman and he is also host of The Bob Murphy Show, “a podcast promoting free markets, free minds, and grateful souls.” The episode in in 2 parts. In the first part, we reviewed the theoretical framework that forms the background to Arrow’s paper. In this second part, we delve into the paper itself, discuss how economists conceive (or misconceive) of medical care, and what the implications have been for the US healthcare system as a whole. Surely, the general public demands and is entitled to an assessment of hospital quality based on sound methodology. From beer drinker to business owner, Elysian Brewing Co-founder, Joe Bisacca, is back with the lessons he has learned from 24 years in the trenches of entrepreneurship. When would you want to know 8 tips for building a successful business. 1. Find your white space Bisacca [1:55]: "Make sure that there’s enough white space in whatever you want to do. Trying something different or try a different version of what’s already out there. You have to do that assessment first. It’s not just what you’re personally passionate in, but it’s what actually can get some traction and make some sense." 2. Study the competition and find your critical mass Bisacca [2:45]: "Check out every competition that you may have out there and try to figure out how you can be better at that version of the thing. Are there customers in your area? Is this something economically viable? You have all these different layers, make sure that it’s profitable at the end of the day and you can actually make money at it. Nobody likes everything, you just have to have a critical mass." 3. Understand the online environment and changing buying habits Bisacca [9:00]: "It’s that dissociative society that we’ve become where you interact with people on your phone, you interact with people on your computer, you’re not doing the face-to-face thing anymore. You buy things online. You don’t go to the stores. Retail stores were an experience. People aren’t willing to pay for that experience as much. They want the immediate gratification of buying it online. They want to just press a button and have it show up to their house." 4. Position yourself accordingly Bisacca [13:15]: "I look at it as it’s kind of like playing the brand like an instrument. It’s never the same thing twice. It’s never the same set of answers. It is that piece of really watching your customers’ behaviors, observing how your thing is placed in relation to the competition out there. Then you process that and you organically make the decision about how you position your brand for the next step. What I did in this last round is not what I’m going to do in the next round because the situation’s going to subtly change." Related Episode 11: Marketing is one epic house party with Joe Bisacca. How do you best engage your audience in 2019? 5. Define your brand Bisacca [13:57]: "Brand is not the product, brand is the personal relationship that my product has with my customer. It’s the conduit that my customer interacts with my product. We’ve produced what’s called a brand book, which has the imagery, what the look and feel of the brand is, everything down to the fonts that we use and colors that we use, and that kind of stuff. It’s also what do we believe in, what do we stand for, how do we talk, what does the brand sound like. Define all those things so you have some ideal that everything is referential to." Related Episode 15: Building a brand that performs in a digital world with Ross Patrick. 6. Communicate with your staff Bisacca [16:00]: "You have to know [what your brand is] ahead of time, detailed, and then you have to communicate to your staff. Keep in mind, the biggest issue with communication is the expectation that it actually took place. I may think I communicated brilliantly. Nobody knows what the hell I’m talking about. Make sure that everybody’s one the same page." 7. Keep your employees motivated Bisacca [16:46]: "You know, you’re talking about people. You’re talking about trying to motivate people and keep them focused, and keep them happy. That goes back to that social interaction thing. If you’re a leader, if you’re a true leader, you inspire people to follow you, you don’t kick them in the ass to do their job. Rule number one, don’t be a dick." 8. Take the first step Bisacca [19:00]: "There’s one more big thing. Don’t wait until something’s 100% polished and perfect before you take action on it. When it’s 80% start doing it,

Unfortunately this tends to push affirmation and positive reinforcement aside and leaves staff starved for recognition while creating a crisis of morale. Episode 001 of The Connected Yoga Teacher was launched on February 24th, 2017 and here we are, just over one year later on episode 054. Shannon's vision to provide a platform for yoga teachers to connect between trainings has grown in a way that she could never have imagined.
