Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 600+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners). In this FBF, we're headed back to early 2021 to the Sundance Film Festival talking with Emmy-winning director Lucy Walker about her film Bring Your Own Brigade. Lucy shares her journey digging into the complicated history of California wildfires in her documentary (spoiler alert: we can't blame everything on global warming). Bring Your Own Brigade is timely as fire season has officially started in California and while this is an examination about the 2018 Paradise and Malibu fires - all of the investigation and reporting that Lucy shares in this film could make a difference now if we all take action. We know watching a documentary about wildfires may sound dismal, but believe us, there's so many good nuggets in this film we hope you'll move beyond that and support this film and filmmaker. Climate change is here but we can do something about it. Hello! You've reached episode 601!! In this episode, host Erin Lim talks with Respect director Liesl Tommy about this major motion picture that tells the traumatic younger years of the Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin. Aretha's young life was fraught with death, rape, as well as controlling, toxic men. Director Liesel Tommy wanted to tell that part of Aretha's herstory which is exactly what she does with a thoughtful eye on balancing all of the beauty and horrors of Aretha's life. This was Liesl Tommy's first feature film and she had to fight for a lot of the scenes you will see when you watch Respect. We're so glad that she did and we're also happy about the attention she paid to Aretha's time spent in Muscle Shoals at the famous FAME studios where she recorded her first big hit I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You. Erin and Liesl talk about the choice of using the b.roll from Martin Luther King's funeral (Aretha was friends and worked with the Reverend), her father's famous parties which included folks like Smokey Robinson who is brilliantly played by actor Lodric D. Collins, and working with the exceptional Kris Bowers who scores the film. Psst, Kris was on our show earlier this year talking about his short film - A Concerto is a Conversation. There's so much to talk about including the costumes (leopard print caftan y'all!) plus hair and makeup so let's go!Respect is in theaters NOW.Follow Liesl Tommy on Instagram & Twitter--Thanks for listening and for your support! In 2018 Mexico had a presidential election and saw a new type of candidate in Maria de Jesus Patricio Martinez aka Marichuy who was appointed by the National Indigenous Council to run for office. Their approach was not singular, it was community driven and headed by a woman who was a doctor and a long time activist. In this interview, we speak with director Luciana Kaplan who captured this inspired story called The Spokeswoman . The film not only focuses on the candidate but the adversity she faces as well as the overwhelming support for the bigger issues at hand that she represents. The story is universal and Marichuy is a force to be reckoned with. Much love to SFFilm for screening this film. We're encouraged by this beautiful story. Gillian Mosely (Film Director and Producer) joins Dr Anne Irfan, Professor Eugene Rogan and our Middle East Centre webinar audience to talk about her documentary film, The Tinderbox - Israel and Palestine: time to call time? Dr Anne Irfan (Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford) and Professor Eugene Rogan (St Antony’s College, Oxford). From BAFTA-award-winning producer Gillian Mosely, in association with multi-award winners, Spring Films (NIGHT WILL FALL, THE ACT OF KILLING), THE TINDERBOX is a controversial, revealing, and timely new feature documentary exploring both sides of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. In 2017 Gillian produced her first Feature Documentary: Manolo: the Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards (Netflix). TV films include “Ancient Egypt: Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings,” BBC2, and BAFTA, Royal Television Society and AIB award-winning “Mummifying Alan,” Channel 4, Discovery, NGCI. Dr Anne Irfan is Anne Irfan is Departmental Lecturer in Forced Migration at the Refugee Studies Centre. She previously taught at the University of Sussex and the LSE, and is an Associate Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. She is currently Co-Investigator on the British Academy-funded research project Borders, global governance and the refugee, examining the historical origins of the global refugee regime. In recent years, she has spoken at the UK Parliament in Westminster, and the UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva about the functions of the UNRWA regime and the exclusions facing Palestinian refugees from Syria. Anne’s work has been published in Journal of Refugee Studies, Jerusalem Quarterly and Forced Migration Review, as well as media outlets The Washington Post and The Conversation. Her article ‘Is Jerusalem international or Palestinian? Rethinking UNGA Resolution 181’ was named co-winner of the 2017 Ibrahim Dakkak Award for Best Essay on Jerusalem. As of this recording, Wonder Woman is sitting atop the US film charts for the second week in a row, with over $200 million at the domestic box office, and over $435 million worldwide. Directed by Patty Jenkins, the film has been enthusiastically received by fans and critics alike, with standout performances from Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. It's beautifully shot, with a very distinct visual identity that sets it apart, particularly from other super hero films. And that comes from the work of Matthew Jensen. He shares the advice from a college mentor that lead him to focus his entire career towards the goal of becoming a DP, and the path from humble beginnings to a worldwide smash.
