This week on Small Business Success Talk, I sat down with Kent and Wes Harris of TelScreen—a Louisville-based company helping eye doctors communicate more effectively with their patients. Their story includes humble beginnings, a powerful medical save involving a brain tumor, and some surprising laughs. They're proof that innovation doesn't always come from Silicon Valley—it often starts with a question from a single doctor and a willingness to figure it out.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing eye exams, particularly in the detection of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. An AI algorithm implemented in clinics is able to perform eye exams using retinal images, providing quick diagnoses without the need for a doctor to be present. This saves time, reduces costs, and increases accessibility for patients. Several companies have received FDA approval for their AI eye exams, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided a reimbursement code to facilitate adoption. The technology is evolving, with ongoing studies exploring new applications and potential advancements in screening for other eye diseases. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message

Dr. Jesse will highlight the crucial role of yearly eye exams, what exactly she looks for during these check-ups and the symptoms that should have you seeing an optometrist immediately and ways to preserve your eye health proactively. Plus, we'll get into the hot topic of blue light glasses – are they just a trend or a true eye-saver?Whether you wear glasses, contact lenses or fall into the perfect vision category, this episode has something for you.
