Change and transition are a big part of the human experience. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus is credited with the idea that the only constant in life is change. Only fragments of his writings remain, one in which he says: Everything changes and nothing remains still; and you cannot step twice into the same stream. Buddhism teaches that change is an inevitable part of life, and that nothing is permanent. And of course David Bowie said- Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes Turn and face the strange Ch-ch-changes Pretty soon now you're gonna get older Time may change me But I can't trace time. Today we are going to talk about change and loss- two topics that most people I know avoid. Dr. Katie Eastman is a licensed psychotherapist, life coach, and organizational change consultant who specializes in the transformation process of change, loss, grief, and growth. Change and loss are part of the human experience and Katie has written a beautiful book called Uplifted-Inspiring Stories of Loss, Change and Growth- that illustrates the principles of transformational change after loss. Katie's mission is to help others become stronger and more resilient while dealing with change. Connect with Dr. Katie Eastman Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

At the end of the Rotary year, it's a big time for change so it's no better time to have psychologist and Author Dr. Katie Eastman to talk to us about "harnessing changes potential." It's a great conversation about looking at ourselves, others, and the way that change can be good for all, join us for the conversation
She was the keynote speaker, but I didn't know. It was just her lovely energy that drew me to start speaking with Dr. Katie Eastman at the Seattle Founder's Live event last year. With a mutual passion for helping people through change, we hit it off right away. When I learned that she had been mentored by the Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, I knew this was someone who knew more than a few things about what it takes to find peace with transition. Even more impressive than her close connection to the Kubler-Ross legacy is her 3 decade long career as a therapist and guide for parents of terminally ill children. The stories she tells are heart-wrenching and heart-warming – a true testament to the human spirit. Although we don't dive deep into these stories in this episode, her soon to be published book - “Uplifting – Stories of Change, Loss and Growth!” - does. In this episode, we explore why the famous Kubler-Ross change curve work is likely very different than what you think it is. We discuss the messages of Jung and Meister Eckhart, as well as exploring why we struggle to follow their wisdom. Tune in to hear:- What it means to deny death and the impact it has had on the U.S. ability to navigate the COVID pandemic (Wow.)- What one thing we always have, even at the end of life.- Why stress is a 15 second experience unless your brain gets in the way.- Why the origins of the mental health crisis can be found in our inability to reset.- Why the best thing we can do for kids today is to teach them how to just be at peace with how they are feeling, accepting it as real and normal and passing.- 5 tips for helping kids and adults to be with their body and self-calm. As “Dr. KatieE” will be showing the world in the next few years, there is so much we can learn from the death of some of our youngest humans. Be sure to tune in to this episode for a glimpse of her wisdom and get ready to read her book soon! In her words, “Kids have been my greatest teachers, especially dying kids. Death is the greatest place to learn about living.” Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/keastmanpsydlcsw/Website and Book Release List: https://www.drkatiee.com

I spoke with Dr Katie Eastman on Jan 13, 2020 and just felt her message about building community of care around suicidal teenagers needed to be shared right away. Her ability to learn from her experience of sitting with 2 horses and being present has shown her the way to support suicidal teenagers in her own community and she hopes to be able to bring that to the world. The model is simple and yet so profound. Build the Herd - a Community of Care. Compassion for self and for others and teaching them to love themselves and others. Stillness in Nature. All these things are important pieces of the puzzle. I looking forward to seeing where Dr Katie Eastman goes with this calling. She has such an important service that the world needs at this time. I have never been to the page of the Facebook group run by my guests on this podcast. I can't get into the group. And that's a really good thing. Sarah-Blake Morgan and Katie Eastman run MMJane, a Facebook group that provides a platform and community for its nearly 1,000 members. The members are all women, and they are all solo video journalists. Such a group is long overdue. A few weeks ago, I released the results of the MMJ Survey, in which nearly 100 MMJs gave their anonymous thoughts about how they view the job and business. I discovered a massive gender gap in the responses. Female MMJs consistently gave lower marks to statements about the solo life, most notably to the statement: "I see myself as an MMJ ten years from now." This is a huge problem for the future of our business. Eastman and Morgan are my guests on Episode 51 of the Telling The Story podcast. I spent 45 minutes chatting with the MMJane administrators about ways to better cater to female MMJs and give them a stronger voice in their newsrooms. Only afterwards did I realize: they have already taken a giant step towards doing that. The mere existence and ownership of MMJane is a massive victory for the one-woman band community -- and, thus, our industry as a whole. Underrepresented groups advance more quickly when they develop a unified voice and receive positions of power. MMJane provides both. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #51: Sarah-Blake Morgan & Katie Eastman, MMJane appeared first on Telling The Story.
Dr. Katie Eastman is a Transition Life Coach and Licensed Psychotherapist who supports people before during and after serious loss to rediscover their feelings of love and peace and redefine their pain as purpose. One of her first assignments as a medical social worker was to support a high school senior who had been told he was dying and that the cancer he so valiantly fought was going to end his life. This encounter forever changed the way Dr. Katie Eastman has worked for almost thirty years. Jason DeBusk was a football star, a scholar, popular, intelligent and a compassionate young man. He had everything and he had cancer. Katie helped him, his family, his team and the community that grew to support him deal with the impact of his life and death. She made a promise that she would share his story and that of the involvement of his community. Jason was an old soul, wise beyond his years. He was a leader with a contagious universal loving nature and 26 years later he is remembered by classmates as someone who made a difference in their lives. Dr. Eastman formed a charity in Jason's name in Maine where she supported dying children and their families. It was through this transformative work she learned the power of grief as a catalyst to discovering purpose. Now in WA state, she brings spiritual tools acquired from her work with Jason and other dying children and teens to her clients off all ages as a Transition Life Coach and psychotherapist. Currently, her charity Children's Palliative Care Community. CPCC, provides gas and food cards to families with severely ill children. Continuing to support the needs of these children, Dr. Eastman is beginning to implement a unique volunteer program that works with teens providing services to these same families. She is also a co-producing a feature film about the life of Jason and her book, "Connect Now" will be available in 2016.

When the evening news leads with stories of Kim Kardashian's pregnancy and the Jodi Arias trial is getting better ratings than original programs, the image of what our society values most can seem superficial. We've been desensitized to divorce, affairs, excessive drinking, drugs, abiding by the law and airing your dirty laundry on TV. Why has Facebook become the place for “official statements” to be made? Are you getting your relationship advice from Dr. Phil? How many products do you have because Dr. Oz said you need to buy them? At what point did these TV personalities and celebrity commentaries replace your own circle of friends and family for advice and guidance?

Join us for a special one hour show with Jane Velez-Mitchell. HLN's Issues host Jane Velez-Mitchell puts the red-hot spotlight on our nation's addictive culture In her New York Times bestselling book, iWant, Jane Velez-Mitchell, host of HLN's Issues, detailed how her addictive personality infiltrated her life and led her to over consume everything from alcohol to food to work to spending. Now, in her latest book, Addict Nation: An Intervention for America (HCI Books -- $24.95 – February/March 2010), in her trademark no-holds-barred style, Velez-Mitchell targets our entire culture, calling it a Nation of Addicts – arguing that Americans have collectively become dependent on and devoted to certain dysfunctions (including obsessive cleanliness, cruelty, sexual exploitation, food addiction, prescription drug dependency, overpopulation, overconsumption, war, incarceration, and crime). When enough people are hooked on the same substance or behavior, it crosses the line into a cultural addiction. According to Velez-Mitchell, media, government, and the private sector are also culturally hooked on these destructive customs and therefore justify, romanticize, and promote them—in essence, becoming “pushers.” In Addict Nation, Jane Velez-Mitchell calls attention to the collective denial society lives in about its addictions and overconsumption and confronts America to look at its bad behavior for what it really is: compulsive and self-destructive. In orders, Addict Nation is an intervention. It will shock addicts out of denial and inspire them to get help and get well.

In 1977 she was assigned to interview a boxing prospect from the Kronkgym in Detroit, Michigan, Thomas Hearns. Kallen became fascinated with sports and began working as a sports journalist specializing in boxing. Kallen spent a decade as Hearns' publicist as Hearns went on to famously fight Leonard twice. In the process she became well known around Detroit's boxing circles but met with sexism along the way. Kallen made her managerial debut with heavyweight Bobby Hitz in 1988. She managed her first champion in 1991, James Toney knocking out Michael Nunn in eleven rounds to win the IBF world Middleweight title. Another Kallen fighter, Bronco McKart, won the WBO world Jr. Middleweight title in 1994. Kallen referred to Toney many times as someone she loved like a son, but there were rampant rumors that she and Toney did not get along well behind the scenes. The pair had an on and off friendship until their bond was finally broken in the late 1990s. Kallen was diagnosed both with heart disease and cancer during that decade, but after three surgeries she recovered and is enjoying good health. Kallen currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and manages three professional boxers, including McKart and a prospect from the Philippines.
