One is that we're not so smart. We can only understand a certain amount really well, and when it gets more complex than that, we go create another silo. We break it apart and create another silo, and people don't like to share things out of their silo because that means they're not valuable anymore. You like to control the staff and believe that your expertise is valuable. And if someone comes and says, "Well, give me all your data," that's like, "Hey, we're going to fire you in a month," right? People don't like to do that. And the data that they have is not contextualized, right? It means something to them, but somebody else looking at it will say, "Well, I don't know, it's a bunch of ones and zeros. What does that mean?" Right? You need to know what it's measuring and why. The intention is usually not in the data; it's in the context around it.Does the rise of new AI tools stimulate curiosity or potentially dampen it?59:34: The phenomenon of people not meeting other humans because they're all on social media is real and disturbing, and AI can make it worse. That's not quite the same thing as being curious. They are curious, just about things that are not actually in their physical environment or likely to affect them in that sort of immediate way.Why smaller teams move faster and learn better44:52: The smaller teams are necessary to move fast. If you have a big team, it's really hard to get everybody educated and on the same page. But with software and the sort of things that they do, you can do it with small teams. And so, you can have small teams, which means you can get consensus about what to do pretty fast. And, of course, the connections to everybody else mean you can look for opportunities and learn from other people much better than other people. So, it's a win-win thing. You get people that are able to put things out there quicker; they're able to learn from all the other people that have done it better. And it works pretty well.

We're diving back into research after a long break! In this episode, we explore the article titled Theory of Affordances to Understand Environment Play Transactions: Environmental Taxonomy of Outdoor Play Space Features- A Scoping Review by Morgenthaler, Lynch, Loebach, Pentland, and Schultz, published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy in 2024. This article examines how various outdoor environmental characteristics influence children's outdoor play. The authors developed a taxonomy (a HUGE chart!) that allows practitioners to evaluate the "affordances" of outdoor play spaces...in other words: what do different types of features of the outdoor environment invite children to DO in that environment? The Environmental Taxonomy of Outdoor Play Space Features categorizes physical environments, their functional qualities, and the play activities they support. Why you should never write a conceptual paper

Conceptual papers that offer new theories are hard to write and even harder to publish. You do not have empirical data to back up your arguments, which makes the papers easy to reject in the review cycle. We are also typically not well trained in theorizing, and there isn't even a clear process to theorizing we could learn or follow. Does that mean that we shouldn't even try to write theory papers? We ponder these questions, figure out what is so hard in writing conceptual papers – and share a few tricks that might help if you still wanted to write such a paper.  References Berente, N., Gu, B., Recker, J., & Santhanam, R. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Jennifer Pentland, daughter to comedian and actress Roseanne Barr. Or just Roseanne. We are not exactly sure in 2024. Regardless, we spoke to Jennifer around the release of her memoir, This Will Be Funny Later which frankly, leaves no stone unturned. It's full of the good, the band and the ugly of growing up the child of a celebrity. With a mother who was a lightning rod of controversy for tabloids, gossip columnists and the general public all thought Jennifer's teenage years, Jennifer is brutally honest which is to be commended. What was most refreshing about talking to Jennifer was that she tells her story with humor with only the mildest hint of resentment or anger about how she grew up. And when you hear her story involving everything from weight issues, self-harm and being institutionalized, it's a wonder there was anything but rancor discussing these issues. But there isn't. Jennifer was a remarkable person if for no other reason than the can recall the clear headed and stark reality of why she was institutionalized which had almost nothing to do with why she thought she was there. It's a fascinating story and really tells you just how strong she is. We spoke to Jennifer in the midst of a family trip when she pulled over at a rest stop to talk to us and that's just the kind of person she is. So get ready for a conversation involving personal chefs, Rodney Dangerfield, being a goth kid, cult and water balloons that almost is too much to believe. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Millions of years ago, a huge and powerful hunter flew in the skies above a former sea in what is now Australia. Its large mouth and long, pointed teeth captured fish and other sea life.几百万年前,一种巨大的强大猎手在如今的澳大利亚上空的一个古老海洋上空飞行。它的大嘴和长而尖的牙齿捕捉鱼类和其他海洋生物。Scientists in Australia recently announced the discovery of fossil remains of the animal, named Haliskia peterseni. They said the fossils are the most complete remains of any pterosaur ever unearthed in Australia. The creature lived alongside dinosaurs during the Cretaceous Period, the researchers said. Haliskia means "sea phantom." The researchers said Haliskia's wings measured 4.6 meters across from end to end. The animal lived about 100 million years ago.Haliskia的意思是“海洋幽灵”。研究人员表示,Haliskia的翅膀从一端到另一端长4.6米。这种动物生活在大约一亿年前。"The Eromanga Sea was a massive inland sea covering large parts of Australia when this pterosaur was alive," said Adele Pentland, a doctoral student in paleontology at Curtin University in Australia. Pentland was the lead writer of a study, which appeared recently in the publication Scientific Reports.“埃罗曼加海是一个覆盖澳大利亚大部分地区的巨大内陆海洋,当时这种翼龙生活在这个海洋上空,”澳大利亚科廷大学古生物学博士生阿黛尔·彭特兰德说。彭特兰德是最近在《科学报告》期刊上发表的一项研究的主要作者。The thin bones of pterosaurs do not easily turn into fossils. For Haliskia, only 22 percent of the skeleton was unearthed. The bones included complete lower jaws, part of the upper jaw, throat bones, 43 teeth, vertebrae, ribs, bones from both wings and part of one leg. Pentland said the researchers believe the muscle in the animal's mouth, called the tongue, was very strong, based on the length of its throat bones.彭特兰德说,研究人员根据其喉骨的长度认为这种动物嘴里的肌肉,也就是舌头,非常强壮。"In many other pterosaurs, the throat bones are 30 percent or 60 percent the length of the lower jaw, whereas in Haliskia the throat bones are 70 percent the length of the lower jaw,” Pentland said.“在许多其他翼龙中,喉骨的长度是下颌骨长度的30%或60%,而在Haliskia中,喉骨长度是下颌骨长度的70%。”彭特兰德说。Haliskia is a little larger and older, by about 5 million years, than the closely related Australian pterosaur Ferrodraco. Scientists announced its discovery in 2019. Haliskia's remains are more complete than those of Ferrodraco.Haliskia比密切相关的澳大利亚翼龙Ferrodraco大一些,年龄也大了大约500万年。科学家们在2019年宣布了Ferrodraco的发现。Haliskia的遗骸比Ferrodraco的更完整。Both animals belong to a pterosaur group called anhanguerians known from remains found in China, the United States, Brazil, Britain, Spain and Morocco. Title of the podcast:  Share Your Story! We Need Accurate Narratives of the School Library (with Courtney Pentland)Short Summary:  In the best of times, school librarians must be continuous advocates for materials and resources, funding, collaboration, technology, and more. School librarians are one of the only teaching positions in the school that need to continually justify not only their needs but also their existence. With increased attacks on intellectual freedom and proposed legislation in states across the country that will affect school libraries and librarians, it is even more important now that we take back the narrative about what school libraries and school librarians do and provide for their school communities. We cannot let others' voices who are willfully ignorant about our work drive the conversation. We must continuously share our own stories to ensure that accurate narratives of the school library are part of local and national conversations.Episode Notes: Guest Name:  Courtney PentlandGuest work information/location:  High school librarian in NebraskaAASL Chapter Delegate for Nebraska School Librarians AssociationGuest social media: Twitter: @livluvlibrary Future Ready Schools Website: https://all4ed.org/future-ready-schools/Twitter: @FutureReady, @ShannonMMillerInstagram: @FutureReadySchools, @ShannonMMillerFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/FutureReadySchoolsFuture Ready Schools is a registered trademark of All4Ed, located in Washington, D.C. #FutureReady

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we talk to Jennifer Pentland, daughter of comedian and lighting rod Roseanne Barr and boy does Jennifer have a story to tell. Jennifer's memoir, This Will Be Funny Later is the focus of our conversation as she writes boldly and with humor about her experience growing up with a mother who rocketed to fame almost overnight. So how does one go from a ‘normal' life in Denver to superstardom in the 80s and 90s?  We find out on this upcoming episode. Jennifer's raw and very funny take on what it was like growing up with fad diets, institutionalization, self-harm, personal chefs, tabloid journalists, divorce, weight issues and much more is a remarkable journey…with humor! This episode might also have been the most mobile we've ever recorded. With a computer on her dashboard of van and trailer during a family trip, Jennifer talks openly and honestly (with a little internet lag) about being a goth, Laura Scudder's Peanut Butter, watching Rodney Dangerfield sweat on a treadmill, cults, cutting, art classes, moving home to the mainland, throwing water balloons at yellow journalists to her mother's delight and about a thousand other things. She's intelligent, insightful and remarkably self-effacing. We have said it before on past episodes but you can now add this latest episode with Jennifer Pentland as another brutally honest Rarified Heir Podcast interview like none other. And somehow there are laughs. Lots of laughs. Take a listen.

Imagine your childhood becomes a sitcom. As the daughter of Roseanne Barr, Jenny Pentland knows a lot about this and documents her story in her riveting memoir, This Will Be Funny Later.  This coming-of-age memoir isn't about Roseanne though. Jenny shares her journey through her teen years from fat camps to wilderness boot camps to her stay in mental health facilities that brought to light the for-profit model of the troubled teen industry. In today's podcast, we discuss Pentland's early family life in working-class Denver and the life that they could have never imagined unfolded.  We then follow her story as Roseanne finds success as a comedian and the family leaves behind the Rockies to head to Los Angeles. What would it be like to watch the show of your own life? What if the number one question you got asked is “Are you Becky or Darlene?” We discuss the disturbing freedom that publications like the National Enquirer had to pursue and exploit their family for profit and what it would be like to be a child swept up in the frenzy of tabloid fodder. We also discuss the necessary work of memoir writing and how to learn to write your story objectively when it is so deeply personal. Jenny's encouraging words are the ones you need to hear if you want to write a memoir. Her life story filled with obstacles reminds us that we all have a story to share and we shouldn't let life's daily obstacles stop us from sharing it.Mentioned in this episode:This Will Be Funny Later by Jenny PentlandConnect With Me:Amy is @momadvice on InstagramMomAdvice.comJoin the Patreon Community For the Bonus Content

Meditation for Infertility: the simple How-To guide...

For anyone facing challenges trying to conceive it doesn't take long to understand the basic biology behind the mechanism of how stress can negatively impact fertility. In summary, the physiology of any animal in distress results in the same end: the valuable resources intended to nourish and strengthen the reproductive system are allocated to vital organs for survival (heart, lungs, brain, muscles), leaving fertility function deficient. This impacts egg quality, ovulation, and uterine receptivity. Then starts the search for ideas, tips and tricks, techniques and lifestyle choices, treatments and therapies that may deliver on the promise of reducing stress, therefore improving fertility. This inevitably leads all people to the vast blossoming world of holistic medicine and healing, a necessary component not only to a successful fertility journey, but a life of health, well-being, and limitless potential, fully realized. Today, we focus on what I believe to be one of the most important elements in any persons lifetime if they want to achieve their dreams, whatever they are; meditation. If you are one of the many who may be saying to themselves; “I've tried meditating, it was hard” or “it didn't work for me” or “I don't have time” then today is your lucky day! By the end of this article you will see meditation in a new light, easy to integrate into your life, easy to do, and a knowing that it is something you just cannot live without, especially if you are faced with a challenge such as infertility. “I am thoroughly delighted – and feel sad almost when I have a big cheer inside – when on the screen pops up a senior female executive from another organisation. I get a bit giddy. That just shows we've come a long way, but how far we've got to come.” - Charlotte In a first for Why Care?, I am joined by two guests Charlotte Cox, President EMEA Pentland Brands and Pentland's D&I Manager, Caroline Nankinga. Pentland Brands specialises in sportswear, with a number of well-known active sports brands underneath it including Speedo, Berghaus, Canterbury, Mitre, Kickers and Lacoste to just name a few! Charlotte and Caroline join me to discuss a range of topics surrounding the internal D&I of a global company, and the external D&I of designing products and marketing campaigns for a diverse and global audience. As always, we open the conversation talking about what D&I means to Charlotte and Caroline and how it has impacted their journey so far. Caroline describes her experience of growing up in a multi-cultural city like London but still feeling very isolated as a minority person at school, university and the early stages of her career. Charlotte shares her own journey as a woman in corporate Britain. When travelling for business, she has often found herself as the only woman in the room. We then discuss how Charlotte and Caroline's stories, and my own, have a connection of ‘onlyness' – the alienation of feeling like the only one in the room who has your characteristics. We discuss what it is like to be a female business leader, and how important it is to use your own experiences as a reference when dealing with others. But equally important is gathering different perspectives, as your experiences may not be universal and may not necessarily lead to inclusion. Charlotte continues this conversation to talk about how leaders must learn to recognise privilege and use it to be an ally and uplift others. She goes on to talk about how inclusive leadership requires effort to understand people, and if you make this effort you and your organisation will reap the benefits of an inclusive workforce. We then connect D&I at Pentlands to Covid-19 and how people have had more of a reliance on outdoor activities for their own wellbeing. Charlotte connects this to Pentland's Positive Business Strategy in taking social responsibility for meeting these new consumer needs. We talk about how brands impact society and how becoming a leading brand means having diverse consumer groups with a variety of characteristics, D&I simply becomes a consumer need. Caroline expands on how this external D&I work by Pentland Brands is supported by internal D&I in the company, for example this year they created a new D&I Squad which contains members from across the company to support Pentland's D&I roadmap. We go on to discuss the importance of creating bespoke D&I training materials for the organisation. Finally, we close the episode by reflecting on how, despite the negatives of Covid-19, the pandemic has fostered new ways in which we communicate no matter the distance between us, that means global organisations like Pentland Brands now have a greater feeling of unity than ever before.
