In this episode I'm digging deeper into the purported health effects of deuterium, a stable isotope of hydrogen. Deuterium has twice the mass of hydrogen, and it exists naturally in water.  A hydrogen atom in H2O is replaced by deuterium in about 150 out of 1 million atoms. This trace compound interacts chemically as hydrogen, but because of its weight it has different dynamics. Why is this an issue? Excess deuterium has been found to impact cell division.. When it gets incorporated into proteins in the body it can mess with their functionality. Yet at such low concentrations it seems like it wouldn't be a significant issue. Let's get to the bottom of this. Dr. Laszlo Boros is a retired Professor of Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine, the Co-Director of the Stable Isotope Research Laboratory at the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovations and Investigator at the Clinical and Translational Research Institute at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He is the inventor of the Human Deutenome Project in order to map the distribution of deuterium in the human body with structural and functional interpretations as it relates to disease and health. Born and educated in Hungary, his medical background includes a focus on pancreatic cancer and stable isotope technologies to study diabetes and cancer cell growth in vitro. He researches the influence of metabolic processes and disorders on aggressive cancers and vitamin transport. He is an internationally recognized expert of metabolic water biochemistry as well as deuterium mediated kinetic isotopic effects in health and disease. His most recent studies target 'deupletion' and 'deuposition' related mechanisms as the result of intra-cellular hydrophobic lipid membrane nanoconfinements via the Quantum Destabilization of Protons in metabolic water. https://www.laszlogboros.com/_files/ugd/aeaa87_81191bea9f9643a7b40ed99f0052394d.pdf Support The Rational View at https://patron.podbean.com/TheRationalView This was an interesting discussion. We check in with Brazoria County Judge Matt Sebesta about storm surge damage and flooding in Surfside Beach. Also this hour: We break down the latest news in our weekly political roundup. Then, today the Inspiration4 crew is scheduled to launch into space, becoming the first-ever all-civilian orbital flight around the earth. Launching with them will be several experiments designed to study their health -- experiments developed by a Houston-based research effort called TRISH, the Translational Research Institute for Space Health. We talk with one of their scientists about what the project will be studying and how it might benefit life back on the ground.  And a documentary that's screening this week tells the stories of students who survived the 2018 school shooting at Santa Fe High School. We talk with Charlie Minn, director of The Kids of Santa Fe: The Largest Unknown Mass Shooting.

Did you know that 75% of Australians are predicted to be overweight or obese by 2025? Neuroimaging studies have shown that high-sugar containing foods and beverages activate reward areas within the brain – that ‘reward’ appears to be more robust than those of cocaine. Brain function is significantly impacted from sugar and food over consumption. This week’s podcast guest Professor Selena Bartlett believes the solution to solving our addiction troubles lies in our head – more specifically, how we train our brains. Professor Selena Bartlett is a Group Leader in Neuroscience and Obesity at the Translational Research Institute. She was awarded the Lawrie Austin Award for her contributions to Neuroscience by the Australian Neuroscience Society in 2019, recipient of the Biotech Research Award and was an Ambassador for the Women in Technology organisation. The overarching objectives of her research program is to apply a neuroscientific translational research and development approach to improve sugar addiction. Listen in as Selena delves into how sugar activates our addiction centres and changes the physical structure of the brain. Selena also discusses how she is using a neuroscience approach to combat addiction that focuses on retraining the brain.

Dear Friends & Colleagues,Welcome back to the Fall 2020 season of ‘Creating a New Healthcare’.  We are now entering the 4th year of our podcast, with over 250,000 downloads this year to date!  It’s clear that the issue of reframing healthcare has never been more important than it is at this moment.  So, if you find value in listening to the podcast, I would urge you to share it with friends and colleagues.  There is so much going on in the world right now. It’s a time of great uncertainty, volatility, distress - and opportunity.   One of the unintended consequences of the sheltering-at-home and social-distancing - necessary to combat COVID-19 - is the devastating isolation, loneliness and despair it has wreaked across the US population.  Research, prior to the pandemic, informs us that somewhere between 40 - 50% of the population experiences social isolation or loneliness.  I strongly suspect that the pandemic has raised those numbers significantly.  We also know that it’s not just the elderly.  The second most affected segment of the population are college age adults.  We desperately need a national solution to address social isolation and loneliness. So, what can NASA teach us about social isolation & loneliness?  And, why is Humana, a major healthcare insurance company, collaborating with NASA to address social isolation? To answer those questions, we’ll be joined today by two distinguished experts in this area - Dr. Will Shrank,  the Chief Medical Officer at Humana; and Dr. Gary Strangman - a psychologist and researcher from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).  Dr. Strangman is the Director of a “Neural Systems Group” at MGH and has also been working closely with NASA over the past 2 decades - currently as the Innovation Specialist for NASA’s Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH).In this interview, we’ll dive into the following:The physiologic and psychologic impact of social isolation on astronauts and the types of solutions NASA is exploring to deal with this. Some of the similarities between space travel & sheltering-at-home in the era of COVID-19.Startling statistics on the impact of social isolation on Humana’s senior members, and the types of initiatives they’ve been deploying to combat it.Next steps for the collaboration between Humana and TRISH.During the interview it becomes abundantly apparent that Gary Strangman and Will Shrank are superstars in their respective fields.  The fact that Humana is collaborating with NASA’s Translational Institute for Space Health speaks volumes about the intense focus, commitment and highly innovative approach Humana is taking to better understand and combat the epidemic of social isolation.  Humana and TRISH are also collaborating, alongside others, in a public health awareness campaign, called ‘Far from Alone’.  This program addresses health-related social needs and promotes understandings of loneliness and social isolation - issues that are exacerbated by the Coronavirus pandemic. I recently read a quote from Atul Gawande that provides a meaningful context to the work that Dr. Shrank and Dr. Strangman, and their respective organizations, are engaged in.  “We’ve been wrong about what our job is in medicine. We think our job is to ensure health and survival.  But really it is larger than that. It is to enable well-being. And well-being is about the reasons one wishes to be alive." Until Next Time,Be Safe & Be Well.Zeev Neuwirth MD

There is no clear agreement as to what constitutes a rare disease, the actual number of rare diseases, and how individual rare diseases are defined. The lack of clarity on the matter is not just an academic issue. The consequences of this, say researchers, is that it slows the diagnostic process and impedes the development of needed therapies for these conditions. In a recent commentary in the journal Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, Melissa Haendel and her co-authors discuss their efforts to characterize, define, and harmonize the definitions of rare disease through the Monarch Disease Ontology initiative. We spoke to Haendel, associate professor of medical informatics and clinical epidemiology at the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute, about the problem with the different way organizations characterize and define rare diseases, the challenges of aligning these definitions, and why harmonization is critical for making progress in diagnosing and treating these conditions.

Dr Fiona Simpson is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, Brisbane, Australia.  She grew up in the Highlands of Scotland, where she was the top of her class, at the same time, she was working 3 jobs to keep the family home afloat. Her father died at the age of 10 and left her mother clinically depressed. At the time, there was no help for a woman left to raise the kids. Fiona found herself in difficult times and angry and let this out in self-destructive ways, from addiction to violence. One night she was walking to the cliffs and not wanting to live anymore. One man, Ian McGregor, took her under his arms and showed her love and saved her life. We discuss her life experience, the beauty and love of people that care enough. This lead to a PhD in Cambridge and a prestigious fellowship to Scripps in California, United States. She has made significant scientific discoveries and now is changing the face of how we use current immunotherapies for head&neck cancer, breast and melanoma cancers. It takes a lot of guts to have the courage to face your biggest fears of being alone and exhausted and desperate. When we break through our fears, on the other side, lives glory.  Dr Fiona Simpson is raising money to bring high school students to have work experience at the Translational Research Institute.
