Sam Pedder of the Council to Advance the Hunting and Shooting Sports joins Aaron Kindle to discuss the trends in hunting participation, how 2020 was an anomaly, and what we can do to keep those who returned to hunting or hunted for the first time in 2020 in our ranks and part of conservation. *Note - Sam mentioned the contribution from excises taxes as roughly $80 million annually. The actual contribution is roughly $800 million annually. Sam knew immediately that she had misspoken and wanted a note reflecting the correct value. Thanks Sam! In Episode 93 of District of Conservation, Gabriella spoke with Aoibheann Cline and Ellary Tucker Williams of Congressional Sportsmen Foundation. You don't want to miss this girl-power episode. The ladies spoke about the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, the problem of 30x30 legislation, AB 3030, the Wildlife for the 21st Century: Volume VI report, their bipartisan work, how to get women in the outdoors, and much more. Since 1989, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) has maintained a singleness of purpose that has guided the organization to become the most respected and trusted sportsmen’s organization in the political arena. CSF’s mission is to work with Congress, governors, and state legislatures to protect and advance hunting, angling, recreational shooting and trapping. The unique and collective force of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus, and the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses, working closely with CSF, serves as an unprecedented network of pro-sportsmen elected officials that advance the interests of America’s hunters and anglers. CSF’s stature as the sportsmen’s leader on policy issues has steadily grown through active involvement within the hunting and fishing conservation community, including staff leadership and engagement in the American Wildlife Conservation Partners, Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports, and the Alliance for America's Fish and Wildlife at the national level, and Families Afield and the Sunday Hunting Coalition at the state level. Additionally, CSF is represented on federally chartered advisory councils (FACs) dealing with hunting, recreational fishing, and wildlife management: the Hunting and Shooting Sports Conservation Council, the National Wildlife Services Advisory Committee, The Sport Fish and Boating Partnership Council, and the Marine Protected Areas FAC. US Withdrawing Troops in Peace Deal With Afghanistan (0:30)Guest: Eric Jensen, JD, Professor of International Law, Brigham Young UniversityThe US this week began withdrawing troops from Afghanistan to fulfill its part of a peace deal signed with the Taliban on February 29. By the summer, America has committed to bringing home a third of its 13,000 current troops in Afghanistan. But what happens when America has left Afghanistan is still an open question. Fido or Foe? (22:56)Guest: Deni Elliott, Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair in Media Ethics and Press Policy Department of Journalism and Digital Communication at USFEveryone's seen a Service Animal in action at some point or another. Maybe its task is more obvious, or maybe you're left wondering exactly what service they provide. Either way, these animals are clearly professionals and usually have vests to identify them. But what about the animals you're not so sure about? The yapping dog on the airplane or restaurant are sometimes allowed because they are emotional support animals. More and more often, people are blurring the line between pet and service animal, leading to some big problems. The History and Influence of Slave Songs in America (33:51)Guest: Kathy Bullock, PhD, Professor of African American and African Music, Berea College For enslaved Africans, folk songs were more than just a way to entertain themselves or pass the time. Spirituals were a source of hope and a way to bond in the face of extreme adversity. They were also acts of rebellion, used to organize secret meetings on the Underground Railroad or just cast shade on their White slaveholders. Kathy Bullock is an expert in the roots of African American music and a professor at Berea College in Kentucky. She's also an incredible musician. Hunting Is on the Decline in America, Conservation and Wildlife Will Suffer (50:39)Guest: Samantha Pedder, Director of Operations, Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting SportsFewer people are hunting in America these days, which you might think is a good thing for wildlife. But the irony is that for the last hundred years, fees from hunting licenses and taxes on hunting equipment have been the primary source of funding to wildlife protection and restoration. The need for funds to protect endangered species and restore waterways is growing, thanks to pollution, climate change and development, but revenue from hunting and fishing is declining. How to fill the gap? One way is to recruit a new generation of hunters, which is what the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports is working on. What a Plant Song Sounds Like (1:06:09)Guest: Joe Patitucci – Founder of Data Garden, Creator of PlantWave Some people swear that playing music for houseplants helps them grow. What do you suppose a plant would sound like if it could join the music? A gadget called PlantWave is giving voice to the plant. Preserving the History of Ice Harvesting (1:28:36)Guest: Kenneth Lincoln, President of the Thompson Ice House Preservation CorporationOn a daily basis, I take the power of refrigeration for granted. My lunch stays fresh until I'm ready to eat it. That soda can I crack open to wash it down is perfectly chilled and stays cold in the glass thanks to plentiful ice from the freezer. Electric refrigeration put ice harvesting out of business a century ago – you used to need a big block of ice in a literal icebox to keep anything cool. But there's a small town in Maine keeping the tradition alive with an annual ice harvest on a local pond.
Eric Jensen of Brigham Young Univ on 200311 peace in Afghanistan. Deni Elliott of Univ of San Francisco on fido or foe. Kathy Bullock of Berea College on slave songs. The decline in the numbers of American hunters and anglers is not just bad news for our connections to the natural world and for our heritage. Because the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is based on the robust sale of hunting and fishing licenses, the decline is hitting us all right where it hurts most: in funding for habitat projects, public lands management, restoration, scientific research, access, and on and on. What is the answer? Hal goes to the primary sources: Samantha Pedder of the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports, Mark Norquist of Modern Carnivore, and BHA’s own Trey Curtiss, who runs BHA’s highly successful Hunting for Sustainability program.
S2 E17 - R3 Efforts with NSSF’s Bill Dunn and Samantha Pedder with CAHSS This week we are talking about Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) efforts being coordinated through the Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports (CAHSS) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). Samantha Pedder with CAHSS and Bill Dunn with NSSF are talking with Steve and Jodi about what hunting organizations are doing to get more people outdoors. We hear about how traditional recruitment of hunters and shooters through family connections isn’t enough to help rebuild the participation rate in these pursuits. New programs that are focusing on connecting with the public through individual events, like M.U.L.E.Y. programs, and then developing mentorship opportunities to ensure that people who are interested in learning to hunt have safe, mentored experiences in the field as they learn more skills. We also learn about what state agencies and partners are doing to retain current active hunters, and also to reactivate people who used to hunt but may have stopped due to lack of opportunities. Bill and Samantha let us know about resources, such as LetsGoHunting.org and LetsGoShooting.org, that can support individuals who want to become mentors and help with R3 efforts in their areas. We talk about looking to different communities in urban areas and to people who are interested in being more connected to where their food comes from.
Mike McKnight and Aimee Russell. Kirsten Black and Samantha Pedder of Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports. In this episode Aimee and I talk about Aimee's ways of coping with not being able to fish by going shooting. Then I discuss my experience taking a UTAH Non Resident CCW Class. Plus new T-Shirts came in. Then Mike talks with Kirsten and Samantha about the nuts and bolts of R3 and how you can get involved in your state. Then I talk about the homeless and how it's getting worse for our wildlife and us!
Episode 46: R3 The Future of Hunting with Samantha Pedder of the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports The future of hunting, fishing, shooting and North American Conservation is in our hands.
