Bess Wohl joins the podcast to discuss the journey of bringing her latest play, Liberation, to Broadway after a decade of development. She shares the "woo woo" details of her creative process, describing a vision of her characters waiting in a metaphorical doctor's office for her to finally tell their stories. Bess reflects on how the play, which travels between the 1970s Women's Liberation Movement and the present day, became unexpectedly urgent in the current political climate. The conversation dives into Bess's transition from an acting student at Yale Drama to an acclaimed playwright, a shift she describes as almost destined. She explains her rebellious approach to writing, from the "masterclass in silence" found in Small Mouth Sounds to the vulnerable, full-ensemble nudity in Liberation. Through stories of her mother's time at Ms. Magazine and her own experiences in the rehearsal room, Bess highlights how storytelling serves as a visceral exercise in empathy for audiences and actors alike. Bess Wohl is a Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winning playwright and filmmaker. Her body of work includes the Tony Award nominated Grand Horizons, as well as Small Mouth Sounds, Make Believe, American Hero, Continuity, Camp Siegfried, and the feature film Baby Ruby. A graduate of Harvard University and the Yale School of Drama, her plays have been produced on Broadway and at major theaters including Ars Nova and Second Stage. We have so much to tell you about!  In this episode, we dig into the life of Storme DeLarverie, a man who was born to a black mother and white father.  Mom was a servant and Dad was wealthy.  Because he was a child of black and white parents he was never issued a birth certificate and chose to celebrate his birthday on December 24th.  His dad paid for his education but he was raised mostly by his grandfather.  He joined the Ringling Brothers Circus as a show rider and began to get on stage at Jazz Clubs at only 15.  He would travel Europe with a jazz ensemble before returning to the United States where he joined the Jewel Box Revue.  The Jewel Box was at the time the only interracial drag show and it toured all over the country even to military bases.  And Storme became the show's lone drag king and emcee.  He was on hand at the Stonewall when the infamous uprising began in New York City aand may have been the one to kick off violence.  He later went on to become the Guardian of Greenwich Village in this, wow this was a true American episode of the Family Plot Podcast.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

Once an archetype has been constructed, it's really difficult to dismantle it. And one of the prevailing archetypes of the 20th century was that of the American Hero. From World War II to the genre of the Western, the idea of the Great American as someone principled but reluctant to intervene, with a complicated past but a good heart, and setting right a problem not of his own doing is firmly ingrained in our culture. But what is more worthwhile: tearing down the idea of "greatness" in a complicated figure like Abraham Lincoln or doing away with heroes altogether? Jessa and Nico discuss how difficult it is to critique an archetype and why propaganda works. Shownotes and references: http://theculturewedeserve.substack.com

Scott Ruskan left his accounting job in NYC to serve his country in the U.S. Coast guard, today he is a national hero. It was Petty Officer Ruskan's first mission as a rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard and the Guadalupe river had risen from 3 to 30 feet in the area near Camp Mystic, an all girls Christian camp. On the ground Ruskan was the only first responder and nearly 200 terrified, cold children needed his help. Ruskan, along with 65 brave men and women of the aircraft unit showed their bravery and heroism and are American heroes. Tricia McLaughlin joins me today to give us a comprehensive look at the Department of Homeland Security and the efforts they are taking to keep Americans safe. Two more attacks on federal agents happened in Texas as deranged lunatics are ambushed agents at an ICE facility and U.S. border patrol facility. ICE is currently in LA's MacArthur park, infamous for gang activity and Karen Bass wants them to leave immediately. Dangerous gang members, terrorist supporters and criminals will continue to be deported. Dangerous rhetoric from Democrats incahoots with the media have caused a 700% increase in assaults on ICE agents this year. The headlines like "Maryland man" and "Georgetown scholar" are forgetting little details like members of MS 13 or tren de aragua. The "Georgetown scholar" that was detained is the senior advisor to the Hamas terrorist group. The USDA's new National Farm Security Action Plan is securing and protecting American farmland and banning American farmland to be purchased by Chinese nationals or other foreign adversaries. Under Kristi Noem's leadership the DHS will continue to put America First and keep the homeland safe. In this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd crack open the covers of some of their favorite books that eventually made their way to the big screen. While the hosts inevitably touch on the films these books inspired, the heart of the conversation stays grounded in the written word—the themes, characters, and emotional impact these stories had when first encountered in print.Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd share personal reflections on what made each book resonate with them, offering insights on how the source material often dives deeper than its cinematic counterpart. From the cold elegance of Casino Royale by Ian Fleming to the raw introspection of Jarhead by Anthony Swofford, and from the spy thriller intensity of The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum to the timeless satire and romance of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, this episode covers a broad literary landscape. The conversation also spans cult classics and controversial adaptations, such as Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorpe—the basis for Die Hard—and American Hero by Larry Beinhart, the novel that inspired Wag the Dog. Add to that the gothic allure of Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice, the conspiracy-laced mystery of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, the psychological depth of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, and the sweeping Southern drama of Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell, and you have an episode that's both literary and cinematic in scope.Whether you're a bookworm, a film buff, or both, Episode 416 invites you to revisit the books that first sparked your imagination—and perhaps gave you a new way to look at their movie counterparts.Tune in, turn the page, and talk nerdy with us.As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. When Rocky Bleier went to Vietnam he had just finished his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers… wounded in action, Rocky would return to the States and begin a long and arduous rehabilitation. Doctors told him if all went well, he should be able to walk again… but Rocky was having none of that. He was determined to make it back to the NFL… He missed the entire 1970 season and made it back to the Steelers roster in 1971, eventually helping Pittsburgh win 4 Super Bowls as the team of the 70's. His time in Vietnam is chronicled in the June 9, 1975 issue of Sports Illustrated with Bleier featured on the cover. Bob Kalsu was in the same 1968 NFL Draft as Bleier, chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 8th round after being an All-American tackle at the University of Oklahoma… and much like Bleier, he too left the NFL after his rookie season to fight in Vietnam. The difference is, Kalsu never came home. On July 21, 1970 a blast took his life and made him the only active duty NFL player to die in the Vietnam War. It also left his wife, Jan Kalsu, a widow, and a single mother of two children. A daughter, and a son, who was born two days later after the father he would never meet was killed in action. Jan gave birth to Bob, Jr. and was informed of the death of her husband while at the hospital giving birth to their son.  Bob was the Buffalo Bills rookie of the year in 1968. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service… but at the age of 25, his life was cut short, and Jan was left on her own to raise their two children. And that's just what she did. 55 years later, Jan is still telling the story of her late husband, Bob Kalsu. How they met, how it was love at first sight, and how they planned to get married in Miami after the Orange Bowl until the head coach at the University of Oklahoma, Chuck Fairbanks, put an end to that. They did get married — after the Orange Bowl — and Bob soon went from being an only child to having 4 brothers-in-law and another 4 sisters-in-law. Jan says Bob loved being part of a big family and took to it with ease and grace. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Jan recounts how she and her 1-year old daughter Jill met with Bob in Hawaii while he was on leave and how he loved his little girl. But she also recalls how loud noises could bring him from a deep sleep back into enemy territory and for a second, understand what her giant of a husband was going through while he was away. Jan says the Bills never forgot Bob and put his number 61 in their Wall of Fame on his birthday 25 years ago. The mother of two, and grandmother of nine lives a happy life in Oklahoma and tries not to play the ‘what if' game when it comes to Bob. He made a commitment to serve, and, being a man of his word, he honored that commitment, and Jan's Catholic faith helped her deal with his decision, and the tragic results of it as best she could. It's a powerful talk with a normal woman who went through a very abnormal time and 55 years later, can talk with pride, laugh with ease, and reminisce about a man, a husband, a father, and a soldier… who just happened to also be a football player. Before there was Pat Tillman, there was Bob Kalsu… hear his story from the woman who knew him best of all… his wife, Jan Kalsu on the Past Our Prime podcast.
