Send us a textIt is time to hit the trail in the final couple of weeks of the 1992 campaign. I figured we would take off with the three Vice Presidential candidates in this episode. They were Vice President Dan Quayle, Senator Al Gore, and Admiral James Stockdale. We will start out spending the the day with Dan Quayle. You will hear him interacting with the public, giving a campaign speech, and being interviewed by the press. This selection of events really does give you a feel for what it is like on the Presidential campaign trail for these candidates. It us up early in the morning and out late at night. This campaign really is a high spot for the Vice President Dan Quayle who I feel was often unfairly maligned. He was a much better campaigner than anyone has given him credit and I feel like he performed outstandingly through out the 1992 campaign. In fact, it was his Vice Presidential Debate performance that finally began to close the gap between the President and Governor Bill Clinton. This episode then turns to a campaign rally given for Senator Al Gore. You will hear him giving one of his stump speeches in the final weeks of the campaign. Al Gore is also a much better campaigner than you may think. I have always felt he was actually better in 1992 and 1996 than his performance at the top of the ticket in 2000. This speech is guaranteed to fire you up and it too will give you a feel of what it was like to be on the campaign trail in 1992. Finally, we will introduce you to the true American Hero that was on the ticket in 1992, Admiral James Stockdale. Stockdale was a far more formidable man than his performance in the Vice Presidential debates would lead you to believe. He had been the President of the War College and had led troops in Vietnam as a POW, creating a civilization and working to keep the troops spirits alive in captivity for nearly 8 years. It seems a shame to me that he is only remembered today for his Vice Presidential debate performance. We hope to change that here by letting you hear his video biography from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society because among James Stockdale's many honors he was a member of this most exclusive clubs of men who have attained the highest honor available in the land, the Congressional Medal of Honor. We want to end this episode honoring this extraordinary achievement from this extraordinary man. Muhammad Ali is widely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of all-time and one of the most important figures of the 20th century. In addition to his long and celebrated career as a boxer and three-time heavyweight champion of the world, Ali changed the conversation about race, religion, and politics in America. Ali's refusal to be inducted into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War on religious grounds—a profound act of resistance that resulted not only in Ali's three-plus-year exile from professional boxing, but also a criminal conviction and five year-prison sentence that Ali almost had to serve until it was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court—represented a pivotal moment of the 1960s. Ali has been the subject of numerous books and documentary films, including the Oscar-winning When We Were Kings (1996) and The Trials of Muhammad Ali (2013). He is also the subject of the 2001 Hollywood biopic, Ali (co-written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Will Smith as Ali), which focuses on the ten-year period from Ali's capture of the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in 1964 to Ali's fight against George Foreman in Zaire in 1974 (the famed “Rumble in the Jungle”). Once a sharply polarizing figure, Ali became one of the most celebrated and eulogized individuals in America, whose rich, if not incomparable, legacy reverberates around the world today. The final chapter of Robert Smalls' life was eventful, and, at times, frustrating. He gained and lost government appointments. He won and lost political races. He weathered attacks on his character and attacks on his constituents. Through it all, he used his intelligence and agility to battle a system that tried – and failed – to take him down. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Norm pulled from: Billingsley, Andrew. Yearning to Breathe Free: Robert Smalls of South Carolina and His Families. In celebration of Women's History Month, this week on the Access Hour, we are sharing two book launch events by amazing female historians that were held recently at the Filson Historical Society in Old Louisville! First up, we'll take you back to February 25, 2025, when the Filson hosted the book launch for Jessica K. Whitehead's insightful new text, "Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard." Jessica offers remarks on her comprehensive biography of the writer, artist, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard (1900-1988) and the deep impact Harlan and his wife, Anna, have had on Kentucky's culture. Whitehead's book delves into Hubbard's family background, education, and relationships, and into his theories on art, writing, music, and philosophy. Using journals, letters, paintings, manuscripts, and sketches, Whitehead pieces together the distinct phases of Hubbard's life, providing new insights into his character and legacy. Following the remarks, members of the NouLou Chamber Players, Heather Thomas (violin) and Cecilia Huerta-Lauf (cello), join with pianist Sebastian Chang in the world premiere of composer Daniel Gilliam's “Piano Trio No. 2: Payne Hollow.” This exciting new piece of music, written by Gilliam in conjunction with the book launch celebrates the Hubbards' vision of living and working on their own terms. The trio also honors the Harlan and Anna Hubbards' deep love of classical music performance—showcasing the instruments they once played: piano, cello, and violin. Jessica K. Whitehead, writer and curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, is author of "The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects" and a contributor to "The Watercolors of Harlan Hubbard: From the Collection of Bill and Flo Caddell." Daniel Gilliam is a composer from Louisville, KY. He is also the program director, and an announcer, on 90.5 WUOL Classical Louisville. Watch a recording of the evening and see the musical performance and images referenced at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucL0S6vD94. Following that, we'll hear from another amazing historian, Eliza McGraw, who spoke at the Filson Historical Society on March 6, 2025 about her brand new book, "Astride: Horses, Women, and a Partnership That Shaped America." In the book, Eliza weaves together stories of women who pioneered in worlds such as Thoroughbred breeding, the circus, and horse rescue at a time when American women in general internalized the lessons of horsewomen: take chances, take up more space, and learn to get back on. From tamers to caretakers and performers to teachers, all worked with horses to buck the status quo. Expressing the idea of femininity with athleticism and authority, these trailblazers changed the way America understood women. Richly illustrated with period photographs, Astride demonstrates that even small changes can advance the fight for progress. Eliza McGraw is the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award–winning author of "Here Comes Exterminator! The Longshot Horse, the Great War, and the Making of an American Hero" and a contributing writer for EQUUS magazine. Trey's Table Episode 262:

Silas Soule moved to Kansas as a teenager. He and his family helped out with the underground, and when it came time to arm up against the border ruffians, Silas didn't hesitate. Later, during the Civil War, he was commissioned as an officer in the Union Army and served with distinction during the battle of Glorietta Pass. Afterward, he did all he could to protect the Colorado frontier from hostiles. At least, he did until Colonel Chivington ordered him to attack the peaceful village of Black Kettle at Sand Creek. Silas Soule may not be a household name or the subject of movies, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised and inspired by his story. So please, join me today as we recognize a true American Hero, one who wasn't afraid to spill a little blood but at the same time was willing to sacrifice it all for what was right. And in the end, this integrity cost him his life. Also discussed are Bleeding Kansas, John Brown and the raid on Harpers Ferry, the Colorado gold rush, Tom Tobin and the murderous Espinosa brothers, the Cheyenne and Arapaho, and finally, the Sand Creek massacre. Pat Tillman is an American Hero. Rising from humble roots in California, to becoming a star athlete at Arizona State and eventually being drafted to the Arizona Cardinals in the National Football League— Pat seemingly had it all. But the events of September 11th, 2001 and the ensuing war on terror made him realize how little football meant to the world. Soon after the Towers fell, Pat Tillman turned down two NFL contracts totaling over 12 million dollars to join the US military until becoming increasingly against the war before his untimely death and before the US government controlled his legacy. In his award-winning book of short stories, Surrender, Brian O'Hare delves into the complexities of the American hero myth and its impact on his own life. As the son of a larger-than-life Marine officer, O'Hare was drawn to the allure of military service, seeking to emulate his father's legacy. However, after witnessing the devastating effects of war on his father's health, O'Hare began to question the validity of the hero myth. He realized that the idealized image of the American hero, often portrayed in Hollywood films and popular culture, was far removed from the realities of combat. Brian O'Hare is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, former Marine Corps officer and Persian Gulf War veteran. Currently, he's an award-winning writer and filmmaker living in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in War, Literature and the Arts; Hobart,Electric Literature and others, and has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. Most recently, National Book Award winner Phil Klay awarded Brian Syracuse University Press' 2021 Veterans Writing Award for Surrender. Through his writing, O'Hare deconstructs the myth of the team captain and the Marine, exposing the flaws and vulnerabilities that lie beneath the surface. He explores the psychological toll that war takes on individuals, the sacrifices they make, and the lasting scars they bear. O'Hare's journey is a personal one, but it also resonates with a broader cultural shift. As society evolves, so too does our understanding of heroism. The traditional notions of masculinity and military prowess are being challenged, and new definitions of heroism are emerging. In Surrender, O'Hare invites us to question our own assumptions about what it means to be a hero. He suggests that true heroism lies not in physical strength or military glory, but in the courage to face our own mortality, to embrace our imperfections, and to strive for a more just and compassionate world. As O'Hare reflects on his father's legacy and his own experiences, he grapples with the question of what he will pass on to his son. He recognizes that the American hero myth is a powerful force, but he also believes that it is essential to challenge its limitations and to create a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of heroism. Through his writing, O'Hare hopes to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery and to question the myths that shape our society. By demythologizing the American hero myth, he opens up the possibility for a more authentic and meaningful definition of heroism to emerge.
