The only thing better than talking to one Sean is when you add a second Shawn to the mix. Returning to the podcast this week, I'm thrilled to share this recent wonderfully rollicking, quick-witted, story, & insight-filled conversation I had with two of my dearest friends: the veteran Boston-based WBUR film critic Sean Burns & the award-winning internationally bestselling novelist S.A. Cosby. Zooming in to cover some of their (sometimes divisive) crime movie favorites not called THE GODFATHER, for this episode, we agreed to take a closer look at MENACE II SOCIETY, THE FUNERAL, BLOW, & WE OWN THE NIGHT, but then wound up celebrating, critiquing, & shouting out several other under-discussed crime movie faves as well. The perfect accompaniment to your summer travels or long commute to work, listen with a notebook handy to write down some of these great movies. Sean Burns' Bio: A film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee, he was Philadelphia Weekly's lead film critic from 1999-2013 and worked as contributing editor at the Improper Bostonian from 2006-2014. His reviews, interviews, and essays have also appeared in Metro, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, Nashville Scene, Time Out New York, Philadelphia City Paper, and RogerEbert.com. A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy's WBZ 1030 AM radio show, and in 2002, received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Greater Philadephia Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940s daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical twenty-first-century navel-gazing film critic." Meanwhile, his sisters still tell him that he "swears too much and drives like an old lady." S.A. Cosby's Bio: S. A. Cosby is an Anthony Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal, among others. His latest award-winning bestselling novel is All the Sinner's Bleed. When not writing, S.A. Cosby is an avid hiker, cinephile, and chess player. Made when Gray was just 23 years old, it's a semi-autobiographical story that merges a character study of an estranged Russian-Jewish family with elements of the crime genre to arrive at something that pulls from the films of Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet and Luchino Visconti in equal measure. We begin by discussing the career of James Gray, his undersung filmography, and his reputation as a notoriously great interview subject. Then we explore the world of 'Little Odessa', its melodramatic flourishes, stunning camerawork, and deliberate tone and pacing. Finally, we look forward to what might be next for Gray as a filmmaker, having last released the film 'Armageddon Time' which functions as a compelling bookend to the director's three decades in filmmaking.Read Eamon's recent piece on 'The Battle of Algiers' and its relation to Palestinian resistance for The Hampton InstituteFollow Eamon Tracy on Twitter....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.
It's Die Hard in a serial killer thriller! Or is it Die Hard in a murder mystery? Or Die Hard in a family drama? Or Die Hard in the great American play?! To make sense of all this, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Sean Fennessey, the host of The Big Picture and a regular guest on The Rewatchables. The plot of Striking Distance speaks to its surprising level of complexity. After he testifies against his own partner for use of excessive force, Pittsburgh homicide detective Thomas Hardy (Bruce Willis) is exiled from the tight-knit police department and ends up working for the River Rescue division, where he becomes embroiled in a hunt for a serial killer who is dumping bodies in the water. As he launches his own unofficial investigation into the crimes with new partner Jo Christman (Sarah Jessica Parker), Hardy comes to suspect that the killer may be the very same man who murdered his police captain father years earlier. As the son of a cop himself, Sean has a particular insight on the film's subject matter, which captures a very specific cultural milieu in co-writer/director Rowdy Herrington's home town of Pittsburgh. They also discuss Sean's feelings about Die Hard, his thoughts on Bruce Willis' complicated career, and his fascinating real-life encounter with Dennis Farina, who plays (Willis' Uncle) Nick DeTillo, in what might be the movie's standout performance, even amongst a stellar supporting cast that includes Tom Sizemore, John Mahoney, Brion James, Andre Braugher, Tom Atkins and Robert Pastorelli. There's also in-depth analysis of the film's possible influences – from iconic 1970s filmmakers like Alan J. Pakula and Sidney Lumet, to great American playwrights like Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill – and to the films and TV shows that it may have subsequently influenced – such as CopLand, We Own The Night, Pride & Glory and The Wire. Are the guys giving this largely forgotten film too much credit? Possibly…but that's up to you to decide! The ‘Die Hard Oscars' provide some typically strong candidates for awards recognition, before Sean and Liam compete in the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! This week on On Story, a conversation with acclaimed writer, director, and producer James Gray to discuss not only his artistic process, but how he established himself as one the industry's most talented writer-directors. A true visionary, Gray made his directorial debut with his celebrated film Little Odessa, which earned him nominations for both Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the 1994 Independent Spirit Awards. Other esteemed features in Gray's canon include The Yards, starring Joaquin Phoenix, who is in fact a frequent collaborator of Gray's, and We Own the Night, starring Mark Wahlberg, in addition to his films, Two Lovers, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, and Ad Astra, all of which set the bar for both screenwriting and direction. Gray's most recent feature, Armageddon Time, is a deeply personal film inspired by Gray's childhood. A reflection on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the realities of class as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy growing up in 1980s Queens, the film's star-studded cast includes leading actors Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong. In addition to speaking with Gray on his process of writing and directing each of his seven critically-acclaimed feature films, AFF was eager to honor Gray with our coveted Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, an annual award presented to leading storytellers within film, television and new media. Gray adds this accolade to his five Palme d'Or nominations, as well as the Silver Lion Award. During our annual Writers Conference, Barbara Morgan sat down with Gray to discuss how he became a pillar of American filmmaking. Ad Astra clips courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor return to The City on a Hill to discuss the career of Mark Wahlberg. The B-Sides include: Contraband, Broken City, The Gambler, and All the Money in the World. Among the many Wahlberg-related topics that come up, one of the biggest is his continued, consistent success as a movie star. Contrary to what I wrote the Broken City review seven years back, Mark Wahlberg is anything but a “second-tier movie star.” If anything, he's a more successful version of Bruce Willis when analyzing the box-office receipts. Additional issues include the two kinds of Mark Wahlberg (tough guy with a heart of gold or high-pitched intellectual), and what the latter kind can get you. Sometimes it's The Happening, other times it's We Own The Night. Or I Heart Huckabees. And, of course, there's also this amazing clip from Four Brothers. And, finally, we talk about the complicated making (and re-making) of All the Money in the World. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. To the stars is what they say in Latin, ad astra. Not surprisingly the term is now the title of the new 2019 film AD ASTRA starring Brad Pitt in what some are saying is another award winning performance after ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (2019). The movie is considered a throwback to the hard science fiction of yesteryear where sound is not in space and aliens may not exist. When second generation astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is called into Space Command, he learns that his father who was lost in outer space twenty-six years prior may actually still be alive. They send him to Mars to send off a communication to his long lost father to the outskirts of Neptune where he was last reported. Unfortunately, Roy discovers that there may be more to his father’s legacy and to Space Command itself. The film was directed by James Gray, known for being a favorite at Cannes for his many award winning films (WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007), THE IMMIGRANT (2013)). His latest has received high praise from critics. It also has been discussed as high concept on its statements on society, family relationships, and the human condition. Dark Discussions takes a look at this latest science fiction film and gives their thoughts. Animé par Thomas Rozec avec Stéphane Moïssakis et David HonnoratRÉFÉRENCES CITÉES DANS L’ÉMISSIONThe Immigrant (James Gray, 2013), The Yards (James Gray, 2000), Two Lovers (James Gray, 2008), Francis Ford Coppola, Charlie Hunnam, Sons of Anarchy (Kurt Sutter, 2008), Pacific Rim (Guillermo Del Toro, 2013), Darius Khondji, Little Odessa (James Gray, 1994), La Nuit nous appartient (We Own The Night, James Gray, 2007), Seven (David Fincher, 1995), Eva Mendes, J. Amazon – Top 20 Hottest New Releases (Hip-Hop & R&B) Hailing from New Jersey, Matthew Schultz is making big waves in the music industry, with his first single “Money or Me” creating a huge impact. This track, which melded hip-hop with a rock element, was produced by Armando Guarnera and earned him a nomination at the 2013 EOTM Awards, as well as one for Best New Male Artist. In a short time he has accumulated a huge fanbase and is currently at the top of the charts on Reverbnation. However, he’s no newcomer to the industry, having played guitar in Chris Daughtry’s first band, and then venturing into other areas of the entertainment industry, landing a role on Real Housewives of New Jersey, along with several films. Now having returned to his musical roots with the very successful song releases Money or Me and Crazy Heart, “We Own The Night” looks set to be a surefire smash as well. Cinephilia begins with one thing: the love of a gesture, a line of dialogue, the way a camera moves. In the contemporary landscape of filmmaking, whose work better inspires cinephilia that of James Gray? The filmmaker of Little Odessa, The Yards, We Own The Night, Two Lovers, and The Immigrant joins Peter on the podcast to discuss his meteoric rise in the world of filmmaking, his attention to detail in trying to build each of his characters, the production process behind some of his most breathtaking shots, and the importance of story in cinema. Finally the two turn to Federico Fellini's 1957 masterpiece Nights of Cabiria, examining how the film conveys the most important aspect that art can do: the fundamental human decency of any person. 0:00-2:29 Opening3:18-10:15 Establishing Shots - 3 Years of The Cinephiliacs11:00-1:06:41 Deep Focus - James Gray1:07:21-1:09:12 Mubi Sponsorship1:10:10-1:22:01 Double Exposure - Nights of Cabiria (Federico Fellini)1:22:04-1:25:45 Close / Outtakes
In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with the very talented Maggie Kiley ("Brightest Star," "Some Boys Don't Leave," "We Own The Night," "All Good Things"). I first met Maggie at the Austin Film Festival, where her directorial feature debut, "Brightest Star," was premiering. Her feature film was inspired by her short film "Some Boys Don't Leave," which was a number one selling short film on iTunes. We talk about everything from her beginnings in backyard performances to taking part in AFI's prestigious Directing Workshop For Women to directing her first feature two months after giving birth to her second child. BRIGHTEST STAR will be screening in theaters and digitally starting January 31. MAGGIE KILEY'S BIO Filmmaker and actress Maggie Kiley most recently directed and co-wrote the feature film BRIGHTEST STAR which was inspired by her award winning short film SOME BOYS DON’T LEAVE. As a recipient of the Panavision New Filmmaker Grant, BRIGHTEST STAR was shot on 35mm in New York City and stars Chris Lowell, Rose McIver, Jessica Szohr, Clark Gregg and Allison Janney. BRIGHTEST STAR premiered at the Austin Film Festival and will be released theatrically and digitally in late January 2014. Maggie was one of eight women selected to take part in American Film Institute’s prestigious Directing Workshop for Women and it was through her participation in this program that she made SOME BOYS DON'T LEAVE. Maggie received the Student Visionary Award at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival and the Alexis Award for Best Emerging Student Filmmaker at Palm Springs International Shortfest. SOME BOYS DON'T LEAVE was the number one selling short film on Itunes for several weeks, has played at over 40 festivals and continues to screen both nationally and internationally. Currently, Maggie is developing her second feature, Dial-a-Prayer, to shoot in Michigan in the Spring of 2014. She is also attached to direct the film 12 Reasons Why I Love Her, based on the graphic novel from Oni Press/Closed on Mondays Entertainment. As an actress, Maggie has appeared in film, television and on stage. She has worked extensively at Atlantic Theater Company in New York where she is one of just 40 ensemble members. Maggie received her BFA in Theater from New York University and was invited to join the critically acclaimed ensemble after graduating. Maggie has been fortunate to work with such great film and television directors as James Gray, Lesli Linka Glatter, Daisy von Scherler Mayer and Documentarian Nathaniel Kahn. She recently appeared in Andrew Jarecki's ALL GOOD THINGS alongside Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella.
Men: 5 is the latest in the series featuring male artists and groups. I've used several 7th Heaven mixes here because they always do amazing things with virtually every thing they touch. Union J's "Beautiful Life" is a perfect example. As is Ricky Martin's "Come With Me". I must admit, I quite like One Direction so I've included the excellent but short Steve Smart & Westfunk mix of "Best Song Ever". "We Own The Night" by The Wanted rounds out this edition. Men: 5 is full of commercial pop energy. Enjoy Anthony 1/ "COME WITH ME" (7th Heaven Club Mix) - RICKY MARTIN 2/ "THE OTHER SIDE" (Smash Mode Club Mix) - JASON DERULO 3/ "BEST SONG EVER" (Steve Smart & Westfunk Club Mix) - ONE DIRECTION 4/ "BEAUTIFUL LIFE" (7th Heaven Club Mix) - UNION J 5/ "TAKE IT HOME" (7th Heaven Club Mix) - JOHNNY RUFFO 6/ "SUN BURNS DOWN" (7th Heaven Club Mix) - JIN AKANISHI 7/ "IF I LOSE MYSELF" (eSQUIRE Groovy Club Mix) - ONE REPUBLIC 8/ "TURN THE NIGHT UP" (DJ Noodles Club Remix) - ENRIQUE IGLESIAS 9/ "BLURRED LINES" (The Thin Red Men Club Mix) - ROBIN THICKE ft.
