Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The city of Campbell River intends to remove the Campbell River Art Gallery's (CRAG) tax exemption, and will not allow the gallery to make a presentation at the October 12 council meeting where the final decision will be made. At the September 28 meeting, Councillor Ron Kerr moved to have the CRAG's exemption and that of the Vancouver Island Mental Health Society removed because of their ‘bad behaviour.' There was no one available to comment when Cortes Currents phoned the Vancouver Island Mental Health Society In an interview with Cortes Currents, Sara Lopez Assu, Executive Director of the CRAG states the city demanded the gallery tell the homeless people sleeping outside of their doors to leave. “I have no vested interest in allowing people to sleep in our entrances,” she explained. Assu does not intend to confront the homeless people. The RCMP advised her that it would be dangerous for gallery's staff, who are all women, to do so. The gallery's board of Directors told city council they are tennants of the Centennial Building, whose responsibility ends at the door. Instead of hostility, the gallery developed relationships with the people sleeping at their door. This includes telling them, “We need to open at 10 AM, please make sure that you're packed up. Please don't leave any messes for us.” While the city will not allow the gallery to make a presentgtion, 142 of the hundreds of letters defending it are in the correspondeance section of the October 12 meeting. The first letter is from a woman expressed her astonishment that council is granting a 50% exemption to a golf course, while ‘stripping all of the exemptions for the two organizations that are actually being proactive in providing services and addressing solutions to help mitigate the ‘downtown issues.' That is followed by someone writing, “I was very disappointed to read that the Campbell River Art Gallery may have their entire tax exemption removed. To deem such an important part of our community ‘a bad neighbour' and ‘having an extreme detrimental effect on businesses and visitations downtown' is outrageous.” The third correspondent states, “There is a large community of artists and art supporters who are shocked at this decision. The Gallery will suffer and its existence will be jeopardized by the impact of a large tax bill. The CRAG is an incredible asset to the art and culture scene in Campbell River and surrounding area. Its importance cannot be overstated as it encourages and educates local artists, local and surrounding populations, and visitors through art exhibits, art lectures, and special events.” In a post thanking the community for its support, the gallery alludes to coverage by the CBC, Times Colonist, and CHEK News. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - At their September 28 Council meeting, the city of Campbell River took the first steps towards removing the tax exemptions from the Campbell River Art Gallery (CRAG) and Vancouver Island Mental Health. Councillor Ron Kerr made the motions, which were approved, with only Councillor Tanille Johnston voting in opposition. City staff informed council this was a change of direction which affected the budget and there would need to be a second meeting before the exemptions can be removed. This has been scheduled for October 12. “It looked like it was going to be a pretty standard third reading on September 28th. Maybe an hour and a half into the meeting, my phone exploded with messages from folks that were watching the meeting saying, 'Sara, you need to watch this. They're coming after the CRAG,'” Sara Lopez Assu, Executive Director of the CRAG, subsequently informed Cortes Currents. “It completely surprised us. It felt a bit like an ambush because at this point we have no recourse. We submitted a request to present to the City Council at the October 12th meeting, where the final vote will occur. That request has been denied. So there seems to be no interest in engaging in any kind of dialogue with us.” It was already after 4 PM and there was no one available to comment, when Cortes Currents phoned Vancouver Island Mental Health. Kerr explained the rationale for his actions against the Art Gallery and Mental Health at the September 28 council meeting: “Their behaviour has been very poor neighbourly to the surrounding businesses and is having an extreme detrimental effect to our downtown businesses and visitations in our downtown area.” “We've got limited ways of letting these organizations know and changing their behaviour, but we certainly don't need to give them tax deferrals if they're not working with us.” Assu claims, “Council is obviously misguided in both their perceptions of us and of whether or not this is a solution to anything other than punish an organization which they may not align with in terms of personal values.” She has received hundreds of supportive letters and emails since the meeting, “We've received them from private businesses down Shoppers Row, the Library, the Tidemark, museums and art galleries across the country and professional artists that we've worked with from across the country. They see the work that we do and see value in the contributions that we bring to this community.” At the council meeting, Councillor Tanille Johnston said she had not been privy to the city's ‘in camera' (i.e. - private) meetings on this issue, but, “There are roles and responsibilities for our bylaw officers and it's not necessarily the role and responsibility of a business owner or a not-for-profit society owner to be doing bylaw role and responsibilities. I would love to understand better where you're coming from Councillor Kerr, in regards to some of the comments you made.” “Our gallery has been getting some pretty awesome recognition in some pretty big spaces for the work that they're doing. I think their engagement with certain populations is actually keeping people off of the street and putting them into spaces and places where they can and do meaningful work that is helping them with their journey and trying to get to a better place.” Councillor Ben Lanyon supported Kerr's motion, “I'm aware of some bylaw enforcement and correspondence that pertains to this issue. There was a lot of pushback against our own city staff, after they requested the Art Gallery Executive Director take certain actions on the property downtown next to Spirit Square. I'm aware of a general attitude in favour of allowing camping in the awnings on city owned property, that is provided at zero cost to the art gallery, despite the city's requests to the contrary.”

Sonny Assu was raised in North Delta, BC, over 250 km away from his ancestral home on Vancouver Island. Having been raised as your everyday average suburbanite, it wasn't until he was eight years old that he discovered his heritage. Later in life, this discovery would be the conceptual focal point that helped launch his unique art practice.

Arrêté en mai dernier, Jacques Bouthier, fondateur du groupe de courtage en assurances Assu 2000 est accusé d'avoir violé au moins une fille mineure et d'avoir monté un réseau de prostitution et de traite de mineures. Selon les témoignages recueillis par TelQuel, la ville de Tanger, où il séjournait souvent, était son “terrain de chasse” de prédilection. Dans Le Scan, le podcast actu de TelQuel, Landry Benoit reçoit Manal Zainabi, journaliste auteur du dossier "Affaire Jacques Bouthier : sur la piste d'un prédateur sexuel à Tanger".
Le 17 mai, Jacques Bouthier, PDG et fondateur d'Assu 2000, est mis en examen notamment pour viols sur mineures et traite d'êtres humains. A l'origine de l'affaire, une femme de 22 ans, originaire du Maroc, qui porte plainte contre l'homme d'affaires. Selon son récit, il l'aurait hébergée dans un appartement en région parisienne dès 2016, alors qu'elle était mineure, en contrepartie de prestations sexuelles rémunérées. Depuis la révélation de l'affaire, Assu 2000 est dans la tourmente. Plusieurs anciennes salariées du groupe au Maroc se disent également victimes du chef d'entreprise, qui les aurait harcelé sur leur lieu de travail. Face à ces témoignages accablants, Jacques Bouthier, placé en détention provisoire, décide de démissionner le 24 mai. O músico Mû Mbana subiu ao palco do Thêatre du Châtelet, em Paris, este domingo, no âmbito do início da Temporada Cruzada França-Portugal. O cantor, compositor e multi-instrumentista apresentou canções do seu disco "mais guineense", INÊN, e esteve à conversa com a RFI. Foi uma viagem à Guiné-Bissau através de uma voz intemporal e cordas de instrumentos tradicionais. O músico Mû Mbana foi um dos artistas lusófonos a subir ao palco do Thêatre du Châtelet, em Paris, este domingo, e transformou a sala num espaço de poesia e murmúrio, de contemplação e espanto. O cantor, poeta, compositor e multi-instrumentista apresentou canções do seu trabalho "mais guineense": INÊN. Estava simplesmente acompanhado pelos sons do simbi, bënsuni e tonkorongh, instrumentos que ele resgatou de séculos passados e que fazem agora parte da sua história. Essa história começou quando era muito menino, com apenas três ou quatro anos. Era uma vez… RFI: A primeira frase da sua biografia na sua página web explica: “Tudo começou quando tinha três anos: antes das notícias da rádio, punham uma música de balafon que me fazia dançar”… Foi mesmo assim que tudo começou? Mû Mbana, Músico: Começou comigo e a minha família a darmo-nos conta que eu tinha uma certa conexão com a música porque eu era pequeno e cada vez que soava essa sintonia eu dançava. A minha família ria-se. Era engraçado, era um miúdo de três ou quatro anos a curtir com uma música que é uma sinfonia que se põe antes das notícias. Do meu despertar interno e externo quanto à minha conexão com a música, acho que esta é a memória mais antiga, a primeira que tenho. Nasceu na ilha de Bolama, nos Bijagós, cresceu num mundo pleno de música, mas foi para a Europa para estudar arte em Portugal e acabou por formar-se na música, de forma académica, em Barcelona… Conte-nos um pouco destas escolhas…. Fui da Guiné para Lisboa, morei em Portugal vários anos e estudei um pouco a construção civil, o desenho técnico da arquitectura e depois decidi estudar música. Estive a ponto de ir para o Hot Club de Jazz, em Lisboa, mas afinal foi para o Taller de Músics de Barcelona para estudar Harmonia Moderna, linguagem musical e tudo isso. Tinha necessidade de ter ferramentas a nível de composição para poder ampliar a minha capacidade como compositor. Pelo caminho, fez 20 anos de pesquisa só para resgatar instrumentos tradicionais da Guiné-Bissau, algo que transpôs para a sua música. A sua música é uma fusão das sonoridades do passado com as novas tendências? É mesmo assim. Toco esses instrumentos, o simbi, bënsuni, tonkorongh , e toco a minha música actual, uma música que eu incarno agora, neste momento, como alguém que vive no tempo presente. Eu sinto-me confortável sendo o que sou no momento presente. Isso não me impede de recuar no tempo e interpretar músicas tradicionais – música antiga da Guiné ou da África Ocidental de compositores clássicos, antigos mesmo. Mas as minhas composições refletem tudo o que eu adquiri até aqui, até hoje. Evidentemente quem ouve vai ouvir música de um músico africano da Guiné, mas vai notar que esse músico talvez tenha vivido uma experiência um pouco mais ampla do que simplesmente um músico que toca música tradicional da Guiné e instrumentos tradicionais com aquela linguagem estritamente tradicional. Falou-me dos instrumentos tradicionais, vemos aqui o simbi, o bënsuni e o tonkorongh. Que instrumentos são estes? Esse simbi que está aí é um simbi do povo balanta – porque há vários simbis. É um instrumento grande que só se pode tocar sentado e é para acompanhar a voz, para acompanhar a dança, para acompanhar histórias. É o meu instrumento, para mim é o instrumento de cordas com o qual me conecto mais para acompanhar a minha voz. São instrumentos antigos, muito antigos. Aqui na Europa quando falam de música antiga pensam no Barroco. Nós, quando falamos de música antiga, pensamos no Egipto antigo, ou seja, estamos a falar cinco mil anos, seis, sete, dez…porque esses instrumentos estão gravados nas pedras de Gizé e de Assuã e todos os lugares onde o nosso povo viveu e construiu civilizações antigas. São instrumentos que contam muitas histórias. E que histórias é que você conta nas suas músicas? São histórias poéticas, são histórias de vida, são histórias políticas, são reivindicações? Hؘá tudo isso e mais. Há histórias do dia-a-dia, comuns, como uma mulher casada, uma dona de família, uma matriarca que a certa altura da sua vida tem um amante e fala dessa vivência. Histórias também de alguém que se procura fora de si até uma certa altura dar-se conta que fora não encontra o que realmente está à procura e tem que voltar a olhar para dentro e buscar dentro de si porque é o caminho mais perto, afinal, para se encontrar. Todas essas histórias acontecem nas minhas músicas. Evidentemente que também tem histórias de amor e observações de beleza do que existe. Há questões existenciais também, postas na primeira pessoa, mas também um convite à reflexão conjunta. Há muitas questões, há muitas histórias contadas no que eu canto. Editou vários discos, o INÊN será talvez o mais guineense dos seus discos? Exactamente. Eu voltei à Guiné [para o fazer] e foi o meu décimo disco - INÊN quer dizer dez, mas também quer dizer mãos porque era uma reflexão também sobre o poder transformador das mãos. Tudo o que concebemos, as mãos acabam por materializar e executar. Foi o meu primeiro disco apresentado na Guiné. Primeiro fiz uma apresentação oficial do INÊN na Guiné-Bissau e depois no resto do mundo. Há outro disco que nos faz viajar muito até à Guiné-Bissau, o Nô Tchon… É muito guineense esse disco, mesmo tendo músicos de jazz à volta, o grande contrabaixista Javier Colina e o flautista Juan Carlos Aracil. É um disco muito guineense, muito, muito mesmo na sua essência. É o mais recente publicado, mas tenho agora vários discos acabados mas ainda não publicados. Então, o que vamos ter em breve? Tenho uma trilogia, um disco em três volumes gravado em Dezembro de 2019 em São Paulo. Tenho um outro disco gravado com o Mauricio Caruso, um guitarrista de São Paulo que mora em Santiago de Compostela e tenho dois discos meus a solo que também estão prontos. Tenho ainda um outro disco de música electrónica, com o DJ Panko que está pronto. Estou com cinco discos nas mãos por lançar. Um disco electrónico vai então aliar um ritmo altamente contemporâneo a um ritmo altamente ancestral, um pouco como os Tinariwen. Como é que fez essa aliança? É uma aliança fácil de fazer. O electrónico tem todo esse leque de sons que, a priori, parecem estranhos, mas todos esses sons já existem na natureza e há muitos instrumentos que fazem esses sons, só que quando é expressado de forma sintética parece novo. É um casamento muito interessante, esse casamento entre voz humana com sons electrónicos. Eu e o DJ Panko entrámos nessa viagem e estamos nela já há muitos anos, só agora é que decidimos tirar um disco. Na sua música, temos as cordas dos instrumentos tradicionais, temos a sua poesia, temos a sua voz, temos uma componente muito melódica. Como é que o Mû Mbana descreve a sua música? Eu não sou a pessoa indicada para descrever a minha música. Eu faço a música, eu vivo a minha música, mas muito poucas vezes oiço a minha música. Eu oiço a minha música só quando estiver metido numa produção e a trabalhar numa produção. Depois disso, fico tão exausto e cansado que já não consigo nem ouvir. Preciso de uma distância de mais de dez anos para ouvir a minha música e ficar tranquilo, sem a julgar, e só a ouvir como um ouvinte, como quem ouve a música para viajar com ela. Mas estou consciente que tento sempre estar presente, não consigo tocar uma música só porque ela soa bem e as pessoas gostam. Se eu nesse momento não estiver a sentir essa vibração que essa música transmite, não toco. Tenho que viver aquilo, aquilo tem que fazer vibrar as minhas células todas, senão não a consigo incarnar. Se eu não estiver pronto para chorar uma música ou rir uma música, não a posso cantar só porque é bonita ou porque as pessoas gostam ou porque teve êxito. A sua música, como disse, está muito ancorada aos sentimentos, às sensações, mas também está muito agarrada à terra. Ela comporta alguma mensagem política também? Comporta muitas vezes. Neste momento, a Guiné-Bissau está a viver novamente uma situação muito delicada. Está preocupado? Evidentemente que estou preocupado. Eu cheguei há nove dias da Guiné-Bissau. Quando houve isso, eu estava lá, estava no meio da cidade a circular. Estou preocupado evidentemente. O problema político da Guiné e o que se deu lá agora há uma semana é só um reflexo da grande crise que a Humanidade vive actualmente – quando falo actualmente, temos de recuar bastante até aqui, não é actualmente hoje neste ano de 2022, falo de há 50 anos para trás, como observador da história, falo de tudo isso. Andamos numa crise profunda, existencial, a humanidade inteira. Todos os Presidentes da República que temos actualmente, com excepção de um ou dois, são empregados de multinacionais que estão a cumprir serviço e são marionetas. Portanto, a crise pela qual passa a humanidade actualmente é algo de muito mais profundo. O golpe na Guiné é uma coisa muito superficial e não pode ser visto como a parte mais grave do problema guineense, o problema guineense é uma coisa muito mais profunda. O que significa para si apresentar o seu trabalho em Paris? É a primeira vez que venho a Paris tocar e defender um projecto meu. Já estive duas vezes anteriores que vim para uma gravação de um disco do Silvano Miquelino que é um produtor brasileiro e percussionista e outra vez vim para a homenagem do Rémy Kolpa Kopoul, da Radio Nova, no Cabaret Sauvage, éramos muitos artistas. Esta é a terceira vez e é a vez em que venho realmente mostrar o meu trabalho à cidade de Paris, ao público francês e habitantes de Paris e é muito importante para mim. Aliás, é de extrema importância para mim porque eu estou consciente que Paris é a meca para a música africana em geral, para a arte africana em geral e para a arte em geral. Participa no Théâtre du Châtelet no evento chamado “Mosaïque de Voix Lusophones”. Em França, quando se fala em lusofonia, muita gente franze o sobrolho porque não conhecem a palavra. Para si é importante alargar a Temporada Portugal-França à lusofonia? Eu acho muito importante até porque a língua oficial da Guiné é o português, em Angola, Cabo Verde, Moçambique, São Tomé e Brasil também. E nós que herdámos o português ainda trabalhamos com a língua portuguesa, temos uma relação com a língua portuguesa que não se pode negar mesmo não sendo portugueses. Eu próprio às vezes levanto-me e escrevo em português, mesmo não sendo a minha língua principal com a que penso e sonho e murmuro dentro de mim. Mas faço muita coisa em português, trabalhei muito para a língua portuguesa. Fiz um disco inteiro que se chama Casa Lua que é uma homenagem a uma poetisa alentejana que mora em Lisboa que é a Ana Patrício e esse disco ainda permanece oculto para o público português. Fazemos muito pelo desenvolvimento da língua portuguesa e pela expansão da língua portuguesa. Somos parte dessa expansão porque o português foi até à Guiné e devido a isso nós entrámos nesse universo lusófono. Então é importante que os eventos culturais que tenham a ver com a lusofonia nos tenham em conta, mesmo que depois nesses eventos nós não façamos nada em português. Mas que não nos excluam porque ainda somos parte do universo lusófono.

John’s answer: “we keep His commands”. You know you know God if you do what He says, if you keep His word. And John goes on to explain what that looks like lived out: you will love others. There are plenty of things that are complicated and beyond our grasp of understanding, but I don’t think John’s teaching here is one of them. Comprehension is generally not our problem with living this out - motivation is. We aren’t convinced that the effort is worth the inconvenience of obedience. But it is, for the sake of Christ. Many of us are looking for assurance of salvation, and John is revealing 2 great principles: obedience and love. These are proofs of a person who is abiding in Christ. The sins of God's children are forgiven because of the atoning work of Christ, and so that they might live for Christ – for His name’s sake, so they could now go live differently than they were before. Regardless of gender or age, every believer has the privilege & responsibility to lead younger believers. Every believer has the privilege of assurance and the responsibility of engaging.

For more than 120 years, thousands of Aboriginal Children in British Columbia were sent to Indian Residential (boarding) Schools that were funded by the Federal Government and run by the churches. The first residential schools were established in the 1840s and the last residential school closed in 1996. For over 100 years, until 1948, Residential School was compulsory by law for status Indians under 16 years of age. Mortality rates at residential schools ranged from 30% – 60% and included epidemics of tuberculosis from poor living conditions, compulsory sterilization as well as nutritional and other experiments. In March 1998, the Government made a Statement of Reconciliation – including an apology to Aboriginal people who were sexually or physically abused while attending residential school. In September of 2013 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada hosted a National Conference in Vancouver, September 18 – 21 ( http://www.trc.ca ).
