Quiet Invasives — Why Invasive Plants Spread, and What You Can Do About It

The Backyard Naturalists

In this eye-opening episode of The Backyard Naturalists, Debbie and Laurie sit down with Benjy Strope, Private Lands Management Biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, to explore the sneaky, persistent, and surprisingly complex world of invasive plants. Inspired by Benjy's article "Quiet Invasives," this conversation gets right to the root of how invasive species spread, why they're so hard to control, and what homeowners, land managers, and nature lovers can realistically do to fight back. Benjy explains why invasive plants don't follow the "rules" we imagine for our landscapes, how seeds hitchhike on everything from shoes to dogs to truckloads of dirt, and why even well-intentioned gardeners may unknowingly contribute to the problem. From statewide offenders like mimosa, Japanese stiltgrass, kudzu, Bradford pear, and Bermuda grass, to emerging threats like Japanese knotweed and fig buttercup, he breaks down what makes each plant so troublesome—and why identification and planning are essential first steps. The discussion covers effective control methods (including when herbicides are the responsible choice), the myth of "one-and-done" removal, the importance of seed banks and site-specific conditions, and the value of choosing hardy native alternatives like blanketflower and coreopsis. Whether you've battled invasives in your backyard, spotted them in local parks, or want to protect native habitat in your community, this episode offers an honest, practical look at the ongoing fight to restore and preserve natural ecosystems. It's informative, candid, and full of the kind of grounded, real-world expertise that helps listeners take meaningful action—one plant at a time.

The girls are back and ready to spill the tee. In Season 3, Episode 4 of Birdie Little Secrets, Kassidy and Sydney dive into a whirlwind week in golf. They kick things off celebrating Hideki Matsuyama, who wrapped up his season the same way he started it: with a W. After outlasting Alex Noren in a playoff at the Hero World Challenge, Hideki snagged his second title at the event (the first dating back to 2016) and notched an impressive 21 worldwide career wins. Casual. No big deal. But you know the TEE is never far away… Wyndham Clark stirred the pot again, this time with some not-so-subtle public shade about the course conditions in the Bahamas. Let's just say his comments on Albany's Bermuda grass were anything but "politically correct," and Kass & Syd are breaking down the reactions. Then it's time to decode one of the most high-pressure, life-changing events in golf: PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. The ladies break it down stage by stage because yes, it's confusing and explain exactly what's on the line: PGA TOUR cards, Korn Ferry status, future careers… the works. And to make it even juicier, they're joined by a special guest, Lea Martinson, who gives an inside look at what it's like supporting her fiancé as he prepares for the Final Stage. But the week doesn't stop there. Kass and Syd wrap with a sneak peek at the Grant Thornton Invitational, the mixed-team event bringing PGA and LPGA stars together, with 16 powerhouse pairings ready to battle it out in Naples.  This episode is one you'll want to listen to tee to green! The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

You set a goal. You write it down. You're ready to go. Then life blows you off course. Your boss keeps you busy. Your spouse questions your plans. Your kids need you. And suddenly you're nowhere near where you wanted to be. Sound familiar? Pilots deal with this every single flight. The wind blows them off course, so they course correct. They crab into the wind. They adjust their heading. And they still arrive at their destination for that $375 hamburger. I break down why you need to stop expecting a straight path, start planning for the winds of life, and master the art of course correction. Plus, why the Krispy Kreme hot donut sign is the perfect metaphor for goal achievement. If you've been frustrated that life keeps getting in your way, this changes how you think about reaching your goals. Featured Story I live in Daytona Beach. We've got airplanes everywhere. Flight schools, banner towers, the whole deal. And when you look up, those airplanes are flying crooked. The nose is pointed off to the side because the wind is blowing from the west. Looks scary, right? But the pilot knows exactly what they're doing. They've set their course for Georgia, and if they don't correct for that western wind, they'll end up in Bermuda instead of getting that hamburger. So they crab into the wind. They course correct. They adjust their heading. That's how you hit your goals too. Life's going to blow you off course. Plan for it. Important Points The winds of life will always blow you off course — your boss, your spouse, your kids, your responsibilities — so stop expecting a straight path to your goals. Course correction is the skill you need, just like pilots do when wind pushes them sideways — adjust your heading and keep moving toward your destination. If your goal isn't sufficiently motivating (like a hot Krispy Kreme sign), you won't bother to wind correct at all and you'll end up somewhere else entirely. Memorable Quotes "The winds are going to blow. Life is not going to get easier. It was never designed to be easy." "You probably didn't think about it, but you thought that I set my goal, I'm going to go do it. But suddenly the winds blow you off course, and you can't figure out why you're not getting there." "If that donut sign is not on, if the goal is not sufficiently motivating, I am not going to wind correct at all. I'm going to end up somewhere else." Scott's Three-Step Approach Set a goal that's big and exciting enough. Make it so compelling that you'll actually do the work to course correct when life gets messy. Expect the winds to blow you off course. Your boss, spouse, kids, and responsibilities will push you sideways — that's just life, so plan for it. Master the art of course correction. Like a pilot adjusting their heading into the wind, keep making small corrections that get you back on track. Chapter Notes 00:00 - When life's winds blow you off your goals 04:30 - Why Daytona Beach airports teach goal setting 08:15 - The pilot's secret to reaching any destination 11:45 - Your spouse disagrees and now what happens 14:20 - Life was never designed to be easy anyway 16:40 - The Krispy Kreme hot donut sign principle 18:50 - Course correcting your way to what you want Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: @heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Facebook Group: https://dailyboostpodcast.com/facebook Learn more about your ad choices. My first ocean cruise was a cruise from New York City to Bermuda. I'd never been on a big ocean liner before. Although I've done a couple other ocean cruises since then, I'm not really a fan. I love exploring, and there is only so much exploring you can do on a ship in the middle of the ocean. But on this first cruise, I did love the feeling of being in the middle of the vastness of the ocean with nothing but water all around. The feeling of not having any landmarks - literally - was a little exhilarating and more than a little awe-inspiring. Naturally, I wasn't really frightened; I assumed, logically and correctly, that the captain and crew knew where we were heading and how to get there. I myself wouldn't have had a clue, but I never doubted that I could rely on them to get me safely to Bermuda and back. Nautical navigation is a mystery to me, and I was impressed by the notion that all the power and energy of the ship would have been useless if the captain hadn't set a direction and followed that direction with purpose. And that ties in with what I want to talk about with you today - the power of purpose. Our energy, our passion for playing the harp, is useless without a purpose. As I see it, purpose has two important ingredients. One is directional. When we have a goal we want to accomplish, we need to have a clear idea of how to get from here to there. This gives our practice a purpose every day. But purpose also encompasses meaning, specifically what our harp journey means to us. Without that meaning, our goals will not be as personally compelling and our progress will not be as swift. This is about our passion for playing the harp, not passion in a dramatic way, but simply our deeply felt conviction that we love playing the harp.  Today, I'd like to help you consider your passion and your purpose, and how you can align them to make progress faster and to make both the process and the results more easily achievable and more deeply fulfilling. Real progress in our playing comes from the alignment of our energies and passion - the ship in my example - with a direction and of course, the courage to pursue it.  So if you're feeling ready to be a little courageous with me, let's get started. Between King Cotton and Queen Victoria: How Pirates, Smugglers, and Scoundrels Almost Saved the Confederacy (U Georgia Press, 2025) by Dr. Beau Cleland recenters our understanding of the Civil War by framing it as a hemispheric affair, deeply influenced by the actions of a network of private parties and minor officials in the Confederacy and British territory in and around North America. John Wilkes Booth likely would not have been in a position to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, for example, without the logistical support and assistance of the pro-Confederate network in Canada. That network, to which he was personally introduced in Montreal in the fall of 1864, was hosted and facilitated by willing colonials across the hemisphere. Many of its Confederate members arrived in British North America via a long-established transportation and communications network built around British colonies, especially Bermuda and the Bahamas, whose primary purpose was running the blockade. It is difficult to overstate how essential blockade running was for the rebellion's survival, and it would have been impossible without the aid of sympathetic colonials. The operations of this informal, semiprivate network were of enormous consequence for the course of the war and its aftermath, and our understanding of the Civil War is incomplete without a deeper reckoning with the power and potential for chaos of these private networks imbued with the power of a state. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Music In My Shoes
December 8: John Lennon, Loss, and Legacy, And The Beatles Anthology E108

A smiling John Lennon on Monday Night Football. A blunt 1970 interview that cut through the post‑Beatles haze. A late‑night Bermuda epiphany triggered by the B‑52s. We stitch together these scenes to tell a clear story of return, risk, and the ache of what never happened. We revisit Lennon's sharp takes on early solo albums, then jump to Howard Cosell's halftime chat where “It's always in the wind” floated a reunion hope. From there we follow the thread to Double Fantasy: phone‑call songwriting with Yoko, the decision to interleave their tracks, and the electric but shelved Cheap Trick‑backed version of I'm Losing You. The music reveals a man choosing domestic honesty over spectacle, and that choice rings loud on Watching The Wheels and Beautiful Boy. We also sit with the shock of December 8, 1980—how news broke live on TV, how radio turned into a vigil, and how listeners discovered deep cuts and new meanings in the days that followed. The legacy keeps evolving. Anthology 1 brought Free As A Bird to life from a worn cassette, reminding us that imperfections can feel truer than polish. New restoration tools now separate voices from tape hiss, reframing classics without erasing their warmth, and sparking debate around releases like Now And Then. We dig into early Beatles gems, Pete Best's late payday, and why Rubber Soul still feels like the band's great hinge moment. Seasonal staples make an appearance too—Lennon's reflective Happy Xmas and McCartney's gloriously divisive Wonderful Christmastime—because these songs hold our calendars as much as our hearts.Come for the stories, stay for the connective tissue: how culture, technology, and memory keep Lennon present. If this journey moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves The Beatles, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find these conversations.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldContact us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.com with your own musical memories.Send us a one-way message. We're excited to welcome interior designer Sara Hillery to the show! Based in Richmond, Virginia, Sara's firm blends function with one-of-a-kind decorative pieces to create story-driven rooms. Named a "Next Wave Designer" by House Beautiful and featured in Veranda and The Wall Street Journal, Sara joins Caroline and Liz to demystify "transitional" design and share her spirited approach to holiday decorating. Sara explains how she balances antiques with clean lines to create timeless spaces, her method for editing a room like an onion, and how she reinvents her holiday decorating theme every single year. She also shares her secret for keeping Christmas trees alive and her favorite way to spark conversation at dinner parties. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Peel the Onion: When defining your style, pin up everything you love on a board, then "peel back the layers of the onion" by removing items until you reach a harmonious balance of favorite pieces. Create a "Thread" Between Rooms: You don't need to paint every room the same color, but rooms should have equal "tonal weight" and a unifying thread (like a specific welt or texture) so you can move a chair from one room to another without it looking out of place. Hydrate Your Holiday: To keep fresh greenery and trees from drying out, soak garlands in water overnight before hanging them, and add a little Miracle-Gro to your Christmas tree water to keep it fresh and prevent needle drop. The Fasting Highway

Karen Coleman-Ostrov, age 65, spent much of her adult life trapped in the exhausting cycle of dieting. She was a lifelong dieter who tried over a dozen different diet programs and protocols, each promising weight loss but ultimately leading to frustration. Some diets caused her to gain weight or slow down her metabolism, while others required tedious food measuring or strict deprivation. Though she often lost weight temporarily, none of these plans were sustainable long-term, and she would always regain what she lost.In August 2020, Karen had a pivotal moment when she saw a stunning, youthful photo of her sister-in-law, Dedra Campbell, on Facebook. Karen initially thought it was a much older photo because Dedra looked so slim and vibrant. When she learned it was recent, Karen immediately called her to uncover her secret. Dedra shared that her success came from practising intermittent fasting, a concept that initially worried Karen because it sounded like deprivation and constant hunger. Yet, out of curiosity and hope, Karen bought the book, “Fast.Feast.Repeat.” by Gin Stephens and decided to give fasting a try—starting with a clean 18/6 fast.To her surprise, Karen found fasting easier than expected. The first fast sparked a change that would transform her life.At the time, Karen weighed 175 pounds (fluctuating often between that and 182 pounds) at 5'5”. Over the coming months, Karen faced challenges like a slowed metabolism caused by years of yo-yo dieting, the effects of menopause, and managing type 2 diabetes. Less than a year into fasting, Karen joined The Fasting Highway and also ordered and read the book.  Karen found encouragement from Graeme and fellow fasters, which was crucial as she learned to trust the process and understand that her weight-loss journey was uniquely hers—meaning she shouldn't compare her progress to others'. Karen lost weight gradually but steadily.  After about two years, she dropped from 175 pounds to 160, and then a few months later to 149—a weight she hadn't seen in more than 20 years! Eventually, Karen's body settled around 142 pounds, a healthy and comfortable place for her. Her highest weight was 208 pounds, at which point she struggled with daily tasks such as bending over to tie her shoes, suffering from sleep apnea, and being out of breath after going up stairs or walking long distances.Today, Karen's health and mobility have vastly improved. She no longer has sleep apnea and can climb challenging staircases, like the 185 steps of the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Bermuda and the 294 steps of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, with ease. Maintaining her weight is effortless now with a flexible intermittent fasting routine, usually fasting 18/6 or OMAD on weekdays, and enjoying longer eating windows on weekends to socialise and eat out.Karen's favourite part about fasting is the control it gives her over food—not feeling controlled by it. When asked why she continues fasting after reaching and surpassing her goal weight, Karen's answer is simple: Intermittent fasting is not a diet or a fad—it's a sustainable lifestyle. This lifestyle has allowed her to lose weight for the last time and live confidently in her body every day.Come and Join Our Patreon Community. They expanded the line after World War II and it was involved in the assisted passage to Australia. They then developed a Cruise Line which focused on cheap cruises but later reorganised this into the celebrity cruises that we know today - focusing on Bermuda cruising - that was instrumental in the development of many modern day cruising traits. I recently lectured on board celebrity cruises for the first time as a guest speaker and presented a lecture about the history of celebrity cruises to a packed out audience on board and also am aware that celebrity is one of the brands that dedicates shipped to the Australian market every summer and is quite popular with repeat guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Part 1, Lee and Paul are joined by North and Central American football expert Jon Arnold to talk about the craziness in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Why did Curacao fly from Bermuda to Jamaica via London in the November window? Why has Haiti's French coach Sebastien Migne never set foot on the island? How did an uncelebrated last-gasp own goal save Suriname's World Cup hopes? And was it a cowardly move for Steve McClaren to resign as Jamaica coach with the play-offs coming up in March? In Part 2, the focus switches to three stories across three different continents that have caught our eye at Sweeper HQ: promoted Thun's Swiss title charge, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh's move to Rwanda, and a controversial new championship title in Argentina. What has coach Mauro Lustrinelli done to help Thun take the Super League by storm this season? What exclusive club have the Sudanese duo of Al Hilal and Al Merrikh joined by moving to Rwanda? And will Argentina really have eight title-winners every year?!  More from Jon Arnold:YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@jonarnoldfcSubstack newsletter: https://getconcacafed.substack.com  Chapters:00:00 – Intro00:51 – Curacao's World Cup miracle13:17 – Haiti's triumph in face of adversity23:47 – The own goal that saved Suriname26:57 – The inter-confederation play-offs28:35 – Steve McClaren's Jamaica exit35:40 – Thun's extraordinary Swiss title tilt39:48 – 2025: The year of the promoted club41:48 – Sudanese duo's Rwanda move45:19 – Trivia: Three-country football clubs46:49 – Argentina's new championship title51:07 – On The Spot

Andy and Brendan! are joined by "The Boys" for this Wednesday episode in honor of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Andy is especially jazzed after a big Packers loss on national TV moving the Bears into a tie for first place in the NFC North. He attempts to once again besmirch Aaron Rodgers but quickly is moved to golf talk with a loaded schedule of events to discuss. Brendan attempts to deem the Butterfield as the "Event of the Week" but is shamed into giving it to the Schwab Cup Finals by Andy as a nod to PJ's continued Champions Tour coverage. Andy, Brendan, and Joseph LaMagna run through the field in Bermuda and Brendan shares his investigation into how some amateurs found their way into the event. The DP World Tour finals are next up on the "Schedule of the Week," with Rory McIlroy poised to secure yet another Race to Dubai win. The DPWT announced the new "Rory McIlroy Award" on Tuesday, now given to the European with the best performance across a year's four majors. To Brendan and PJ's surprise, Joseph reveals that Rory is ineligible for this award, leading to questions about why this even exists. The ANNIKA Driven by Gainbridge at the Pelican has made plenty of headlines due to a Kai Trump sponsor exemption and Caitlin Clark's Pro-Am round having extended coverage on Golf Channel. Finally, PJ previews the Charles Schwab Cup Championship as the 2025 Champions Tour season comes to a close. Andy makes plans for next year's swan song at Phoenix Country Club that involves PJ running a 5K race to raise money for colon cancer research. There's a brief discussion of some news surrounding the now-announced teams for the "Golf Channel Games," but Joseph isn't sure what to make of this made-for-TV spectacle. "The Boys" are then put on the hot seat by Andy and Brendan as they're quizzed about the future of "Lunch with The Boys," the Indianapolis Colts, and more.
