We are back at it again with the light novels in this first episode of the newly rebooted Ani-Gamers Book Club, now permanently on the main podcast feed! (Yes, we reset the numbering for this new version of the show.) We are joined by the boss, Evan Minto, who selected Boogiepop and Others, the story of a group of classmates caught in a secretive conflict between the forces of good and evil. Topics include the works of Satoshi Kon, arguments about the qualification for media to be considered goth, and gender. Post in the Discord or pop off in the comments below on anything and everything AGBC and maybe we'll talk about it on the next episode.

Kat, Leo and Bcom have returned to close out the second half of their Winter 2019 first impressions and pick the top 8 shows that we’ll be following this season. After Leo and Kat cry about work and the freezing cold weather, Bcom cries about the Kristaps Porzingis trade. Once we get into anime, Bcom has some special Swedish intelligence to help understand the main love interest of Girly Air Force. We felt Quintessential Quintuplets offered a surprisingly inoffensive ecchi harem setup, when compared with typical genre offerings from the past couple of years. Our review of Grimms notes was…well, grim. Boogiepop and Others might work better as a light novel than an anime, in our opinion, as it left us wanting more context. The Price of Smiles was a bit too expensive for us, apparently. Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka is another in a long line of underwhelming post-Madoka dark magical girl shows, but this one at least made us laugh. Domestic Kanojo’s hentai-esque premise with high quality art and direction caught Bcom’s attention. Kat was pleased that actual sex took place in the first episode of an anime, for once. We caught up on the first half of JoJo Part 5 and attempted to explain the insane escapades the boys are currently getting up to in Italy. Bcom reports in from the frontlines of W’z where nothing makes sense and DJ Juice has captured the hearts and minds of Osaka with his absolutely terrible music. Our review of Kaguya-sama: Love is War devolves into Kat offering up a $50 gift certificate for the “Bride of Bcom” prize contest if listeners recreate Chika’s dance from the episode 3 ED. We move to a somewhat clever cute girls show called Endro, before continuing with a not very clever comedy in Miss Ueno. Bcom loved the incredible CGI aerial dogfights in The Magnificent Kotobuki, while Kat was more focused on how they made their pancakes so damn fluffy. Leo discovers he wants to ride the dragon as we review the first few episodes of Mysteria Friends. After everything has been reviewed, you know what time it is! We end our impressions with the VOTE, which determines the top 8 shows we’ll follow this season.Recorded February 2, 2019.

In dieser Episode geht es unter anderem um: Dororo, Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai, Mob Psycho 100 II, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, Boogiepop, The Promised Neverland und Egao no Daika. Außerdem gibt es kurze Eindrücke zu Kemurikusa, Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka, Girly Air Force, Kaguya-sama: Love is War und Kemono Friends 2.

If you want horror there’s Boogiepop and The Promised Neverland. Looking for some action? Mob Psycho 100 is back and so is Dororo! Who stands on top of this winter crop? Tune in to find out! Plus crazy convention news and recommendations.

Oh no! We've been transported to another world where podcasters fight in some sort of Battle Royale (and also Z has been turned into a washing machine)?! This week, we're talking about the fascinating fandom that is Light Novel fans, with special guest, [Justus R. Stone](justusrstone.com)! Next week, we'll be going to another other world... in ... space? Talking about... Galaga?! ## Where can I learn more about Justus R. Stone? [Justus R. Stone](justusrstone.com) is the author of the apocalyptic fiction series, The Bleeding Worlds, and has a podcast ([Light Novel Podcast](lightnovelpodcast.com)) and [YouTube channel](http://youtube.com/justusrstone) dedicated to light novels. You can also find him on Twitter ([@justusrstone](http://twitter.com/justusrstone)), Instagram ([@justusrstone](http://instagram.com/justusrstone)) and Facebook (... [@justusrstone](http://facebook.com/justusrstone)). ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** Light Novels are short (approximately 50 000 words), Japanese novels primarily targeted at high- and middle-school students which are often accompanied by manga- or anime-style illustrations. The "light" in the name actually comes from the lack of hard-to-read kanji (ideographic characters in Japanese). Light novels are sort of the evolution of pulp novels and magazines in Japan: Somewhere in the 1970s, many pulp magazines had started to move away from classic-style covers towards more anime and manga style covers and including illustrations at the beginning of stories. In the 1980s, novels like _The Heroic Legend of Arslan_ and _Record of Lodoss War_ took a hold of audience, as did _Slayers_ and the _Boogiepop_ series in the 1990s (note that many of these were turned into anime). Interest in light novels really took off in the mid-2000s with the success of the _Haruhi Suzumiya_ series. **Search Data:** By Google Trends search volume, [Light Novels have become much, much more popular since 2004](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F06b_0_) and are arguably the most popular they have ever been. Since 2006, they have been on a steady climb upwards with exception to the last few years where interest has been a bit flat. There was a sharp increase in interest between February to August 2015, but we couldn't figure out why. In terms of search volume, the top ten countries for_Light Novel_ are: Japan, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, Phillipines, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan. [// There is a pretty dramatic decline in interest: Kazakhstan is at 17]: # [// Canada is at 22, with 6; United States is at 26 with 5]: # **Fan Demographics:** Based on some data from the [r/LightNovel Community Survey from 2016](https://www.reddit.com/r/LightNovels/comments/3g2rm5/rlightnovels_community_survey_results/) (with over 1500 respondents): - _Gender_: In the subreddit, overwhelmingly male (95.6%; 3.3% female) - _Age_: Predominantly folks age 17-25 (40% 17-20 years old, 36.5% 20-25 years old) - _Location_: Most of respondents are in North America (51.1%) but many in Europe (27.2%) and some in Asia (11.1%) Some other interesting bits of data from the survey: - Most folks come to the subreddit for Chinese light novels (57.8%), followed by Japanese (34.9%) - Respondents are predominantly lurkers (74.6%) - Most folks prefer to read by chapter (60.8%) as compared to by book (37.1%) - Most folks do not buy licensed light novels (76.4%) - Most folks do read Western books (78.4%) but do not prefer Western books to Light Novels (66.9%) ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/366365f057a51a) Famous Last Words **Erica** What do you think are the qualities of light novels as a genre that makes them so interesting as reader and reviewer of light novels? (What are your thoughts about the genre as a whole, and personal interpretation of why you like them) **G** Why 'light' novels? Why
It’s only fitting that we hit our 50th episode during the same year we’re celebrating Weekly Shonen Jump’s 50th anniversary. Maybe we’ll eventually run fifty years ourselves. Hey, we’ve got two years down already, what’s another forty-eight? Regardless, we want to thank all you listeners for helping us reach this far! Your listenership and support makes doing this show all the more fun and fulfilling for us to do, and we want to keep going for a long while yet. To celebrate our 50th episode milestone, we wanted to revisit a series we’ve previously discussed on the show. So we decided to go back to class - Assassination Classroom that is! Turns out Colton never quite graduated from the series back when we first talked about it, so now that Viz Media’s release of the manga has concluded, we decided it was time to go back and finish it. Joining us is our guest from our original Yusei Matsui retrospective, Kiirobon, best known for his Shonen Sunday blog but also an avid Matsui fan in his own right! Together we discuss the trials and triumphs, the laughs and cries, the anything and everything of Yusei Matsui’s hit series about an unkillable octopus-monster teacher and his 28 would-be middle-school student assassins! But of course, we’ve got to talk about the news first! We discuss a slew of new One Piece spinoffs, the expiring licenses of several high-profile anime, and cool convention news! Plus, we talk about the latest Bookscan and discuss controversial topics like Viz Media dropping the Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc and the repercussions faced by the New Life+ light novel author for his racist twitter comments! With as much as we had to talk about, we surprisingly manage to cover it all in only an hour! Which is good considering our Assassination Classroom episode managed to be over three hours long! This isn’t our longest episode, but it’s sure in the running. Which, hey, it’s our 50th episode. It deserves to be! BIG NEWS! Because our Kenta Shinohara podcasts were delayed we didn’t get around to covering a lot of important news from the past couple months. To remedy that, we decided to record a big news-focused podcast to get everyone up to speed! …This was a big bad idea. We accumulated nearly twelve pages worth of news, tallying to over one hundred stories in total! To make matters worse, we began recording late at night after I was already exhausted from drawing for nearly 20 hours that day. Thanks to a spotty internet connection, we ended up needing two recording sessions and over four hours of rough audio to cover everything we wanted to. Needless to say, recording this was a tiring process. You can definitely hear the exhaustion in my voice by the end of this podcast, alongside Colton’s groans of impatience. Though frankly, listening back to this episode I did most of the talking, so it’s kinda funny that Colton was more vocally upset by the experience. ^^, Regardless of how frustrating the process was, this was a necessary podcast to make. Discussing manga news is the reason this show originally came into being, and doing a purely news-focused episode brings us nostalgically back to the roots of our early episodes. Did we go a little overboard in the mountain of content we attempted to surmount? Perhaps. But hopefully you’ll find this podcast as valuable as we found these stories important to discuss. Jersey Boy Evan and New Yorker David bring in guest Rickie Sherman to talk Neo Yokio, the inscrutable vanity anime co-production from Vampire Weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig. But first, a recap of Evan's weekend with Studio Trigger at Genericon 2018 and some Boogiepop news. Topics include: Kim and Kanye's favorite anime, the pineapple on pizza of anime, and a shockingly sincere discussion of race and class in America. Production note: Rickie's mic was having some issues, so apologies for the crappy quality. I tried my best to clean it up in post! Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com! Show notes, links, comments, and more can be found at http://anigamers.com/podcast.

Just browsing the Borders manga section today, not looking for anything in particular, and was nicely surprised to see a new Boogiepop novel from Seven Seas. This one is entitled Boogiepop at Dawn and supposedly tells Boogiepop's origin. The company had not put out any Boogiepop works since the end of 2006. I love this title in all its incarnations of anime, manga, and the novels and hope that Seven Seas is back on the ball with the franchise. You can read free previews of most of the books at the official Boogiepop webpage at: http://www.gomanga.com/manga/boogiepop.php The best resource on that page is where it says "Read Boogiepop: The Ultimate guide" which is a four part article about the chronology and story arcs of the entire Boogiepop Universe. If you have no experience with this title, I would suggest reading the novels first, then the manga, the movie, and lastly the anime. I say the anime last because it does not adapt the first book and was made for fans already familiar with the novels. You can get the thinpack collection of the anime and live action movie for around $40 at most retailers online like Amazon or Right Stuff, and probably even cheaper on Ebay. The music soundtracks are relatively easy to find as well. Boogiepop at Dawn goes for $7.95 and is bound in the small light novel format that Seven Seas seems to prefer. They give real weight to the term "pocketbook". Seriously, you can actually put these light novels in your back pocket, which is actually pretty cool when you're on the go.
