On Episode 233, we are thrilled to welcome back, MATTHEW GOODMAN! We are so grateful that Zoom and, before them, Skype (remember them?) opened up the world to conversations with authors. That said, there's still nothing like sitting in the same room with other humans talking about books, ideas, and historic happenings. Matthew joined us at Book Cougars HQ here in Connecticut to discuss his new book, PARIS UNDERCOVER: A WARTIME STORY OF COURAGE, FRIENDSHIP, AND BETRAYAL, now available from Ballantine Books. The book is a narrative history about Etta Shiber and Kate Bonnefous, two middle-aged women who smuggled out British servicemen from behind enemy lines, their arrest, Etta's best-selling memoir about their efforts, and the price Kate paid for that book. Don't miss our conversation with Matthew at the end of this episode. Paris Undercover is about history, but it speaks to our current time. Some highlights in this episode: We both have started reading around in THE PORTABLE FEMINIST READER, edited by Roxane Gay, starting with “If Men Could Menstruate” by Gloria Steinem. Chris also read “Being Female” by Eileen Myles. Emily finished the novel FOOD PERSON by Adam Roberts, and Chris read the graphic memoir EPHEMERA by Briana Loewinsohn. It was also time for another ghost story from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We both thought “The Signal Man” by Charles Dickens was “meh,” although it had some good lines and moments. In Biblio Adventures, we recap seeing Maura Casey at Bank Square Books in Mystic, our Independent Bookstore Day jaunts to Breakwater Books in Guilford and R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, and Emily's volunteer experience at Cherry Jubilee in NYC. We had such a fun time recording this episode and hope you enjoy it. Happy Reading! https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2025/episode233

Have you ever wondered how a novel can transform into a theatrical masterpiece? Queer writer, performer, and director, Megan Greeley, joins us to share her fascinating journey of adapting her novel, Jawbone, into a play. We uncover the layers of a young girl navigating platonic and romantic feelings in the absence of queer representation, and challenge the societal taboos around male bonding and physical affection. We then move on to examine the exhaustion and solitude that comes with writing a solo show and the celebration of rediscovering the supportive theatre community. Megan draws upon her theatre background to breathe life into her narratives, reminding us of the power of storytelling and performance. We also delve into her experiences with the TNL Youth theatre program and how it revealed a creative dimension within her that she hadn't previously explored. In the final segment, we explore the realities of pursuing a career in the performing arts, looking at the highs, the lows, and everything in between. From economic constraints to the priceless support of her parents, Megan reflects on how these factors have influenced her journey. We highlight the significant role of Ruth Lawrence in the Newfoundland theatre scene and Megan's career, discussing mentorship, career progression, and the art of infusing humour into darker subject matter. Join us for a refreshing conversation that bridges theatre, storytelling, and queer identity. Bio Meghan Greeley is a queer writer, editor, performer, and director originally from Corner Brook, NL. Her poetry, prose, and scripts have been published in The Stockholm Review of Literature, Ephemera, Metatron's ÖMËGÄ project, Riddle Fence, Humber Mouths 2, The Breakwater Book of Contemporary Newfoundland Drama (Vol. 1), and the Playwrights Canada Press anthology Long Story Short. As a playwright, she was a 2016 nominee for the RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights Prize and was later a resident of both the Tarragon Playwrights Unit and Nightwood Theatre's Write from the Hip program. Her stage plays have been produced across Canada. Her play Hunger, published by Breakwater Books, was shortlisted for the BMO Winterset Award. Her short novel Jawbone is forthcoming from Radiant Press in Fall 2023. She is currently the Artistic Director of White Rooster Theatre. Connecticut Senator George P. McLean's crowning achievement was overseeing passage of one of the country's first and most important wildlife conservation laws, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The MBTA, which is still in effect today, has saved billions of birds from senseless killing and likely prevented the extinction of entire bird species. In this episode, Executive Producer Mary Donohue interviews Will McLean Greeley. He grew up with a deep interest in American history, politics, and birds. After retiring from a 35-year career in government and corporate market research, he began a four-year research and writing journey to learn more about George P. McLean and his legacy. A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington, Senator George P. McLean, Birdman of the Senate, published by the Rochester Institute of Technology Press in 2023, is his first book. The new book puts McLean's victory for birds in the context of his distinguished forty-five-year career marked by many acts of reform during a time of widespread corruption and political instability. McLean rose from obscurity as a Connecticut farm boy to serve as Governor of Connecticut and as a senator from Connecticut in Congress where he advised five US presidents and helped lead change and shape events as a US senator from 1911 to 1929. Senator George P. McLean established the McLean Game Refuge in 1932 as a life sanctuary to preserve over 3,000 acres of meadows and forests he feared would be lost to development and resource exploitation. Today the wildlands have grown to over 4,400 acres, and protect hundreds of animal species. From the cover: On July 2, 2015, influential social activist Gemma Hickey began a 908-kilometer walk across the island of Newfoundland to raise awareness and funds for survivors of religious institutional abuse. Almost Feral celebrates the community of support that gathered around this journey and recounts Hickey's remarkable story of self-discovery which led to the realization that they are transgender. In this thought-provoking and wide-ranging autobiography, Hickey counters memories of sexual assault, bullying, and depression with inspiring reflections on faith, love, family, individual and communal identity, sex, gender, and acceptance. Through complex feelings of empathy and solitude, weakness and strength, suffering and recovery, Gemma Hickey's Almost Feral chronicles a journey from one side of an island to the other side of personal identity—charting an unknown territory where one's body becomes the map that leads to home.Pick up Almost Feral using this link to help the channel: https://amzn.to/3ZwhtmrThis episode is the twenty-six part of a fifty-episode Write Project sub-series celebrating the fifty-year anniversary of Breakwater Books! Warm, funny, and stylistically savvy, these stories follow an interlocking set of characters and the people they love.Characters weave their way in and out of The Love Olympics, a collection of short fiction set in St. John's. The book is about various forms of love—the ways love grips us, shakes us, releases or envelops us. The stories are smart, witty, funny, warm, and surprising; they capture the preoccupations of characters from different generations who are closely or only tangentially connected to one another. This collection explores people's aspirations, fears, and vulnerabilities; their generosity and desire for connection; their willingness to see past flaws and appreciate other human beings in all their complexity. This hour on Where We Live, we look into strategies that build resilience in local bookstores and discuss pandemic book launches. Long-time indie bookshops continue to stay afloat and even thrive despite the ongoing pandemic. Amazon controls more than half of the market for print books and at least three-quarters of publishers' ebook sales. We also talk to booksellers about trends, including eliminating or reducing inventory-holding costs by selling on Bookstore.org –the Amazon for indies. The American Booksellers Association (ABA) lists the top five trends for indie bookstores in 2022. According to the ABA, nationally, 250 indie bookstores opened, and 98 closed in 2020 and 2021. Here is a list of Connecticut's indie bookstores: Barrett Bookstore, Darien (since 1939) Hickory Stick Bookshop, Washington Depot (since 1951) Breakwater Books, Guilford (since 1972) Atticus Books, Middletown (since 1975) Bloodroot, Bridgeport (since 1977) Books on the Common, Ridgefield (since 1984) RJ Julia, Madison, (since 1990) Bank Square Books, Mystic (since 1998) Book Trader Cafe, New Haven (since 1998) Elm Street Books, New Canaan, (since 2003) A New Page, Middletown (since 2003) Burgundy Books, Old Saybrook (since 2005) New bookstore openings in Connecticut include: Title IX: A Bookstore, a pop-up bookshop in New London The Key Bookstore's brick-and-mortar bookshop in Hartford Athena Books in Old Greenwich Pink Wave Books & Cafe (online) Wordsmith Bookshop, scheduled to open in Simsbury in May Reader's Block, opened in Stratford Book Club on the Go (online, pop-ups, book delivery) New York's Shakespeare & Co., expected to open its first Connecticut bookshop in Norwalk. Also, plans are underway to launch Next Chapter Books and More, an ELITE (Educating Learners In Transition Environment) Program's student-run bookstore and coffee shop in Trumbull. Several of the new bookshops sell to under-represented communities, and all are focussed on building a local third space. We discuss the ‘doing well by doing good' indie business model. Will it endure? We also look into store closures and fundraisers to keep indies open. That Book Store in Wethersfield and Elliot's Bookstore in Northford are among those that shut down, while fundraisers are underway to reopen New Haven's Never Ending Books, and to keep Bennett's Books in Deep River open. Us, Now is a collection of stories connecting Newfoundland and Labrador to the world via racialized Newfoundlanders. These are stories that fit George Elliot Clarke's thinking on what a truly Canadian national tale might be: local, yet connected, broadly and diversely. But at its core, this book, as editor Lisa Moore sagely wrote, “is a book about belonging. Sometimes in these stories, belonging is fragile and fought for, but the act of writing from a place and about a place is belonging—the sometimes sacred, sometimes scary act of witnessing means writers always stand apart and, at the same time, are a part of.”Originally broadcast on October 18, 2021 on CHMR 93.5 FM in St. John's, and on other great stations across the country. Interview with Paul David Power, the astonishing playwright behind 'Crippled' and contributor to 'Land of Many Shores,' both published through Breakwater Books!Paul David Power is a Canadian actor, playwright and theatre director from Newfoundland and Labrador, whose play Crippled was a nominee for the Governor General's Award for English-language drama at the 2021 Governor General's Awards.Crippled, about a gay disabled man coping with grief following the death of his partner, was based in part on his own experiences following the death of his partner, Jonathan, in 2013. Power himself has a disability which requires him to use leg braces and crutches to walk. The play was first produced for the stage in 2018, with Power performing the lead role himself, and was published by Breakwater Books in 2021. A planned production in San Francisco in 2019 was halted under complicated American rules which require foreign theatre artists to have their work bureaucratically judged as "culturally unique" before they can be granted a work permit. In 2022, the play was mounted at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, with Power playing the lead role.Power is the artistic director of his own theatre company, Power Productions, which specializes in stage plays about disability. His other plays have included Roomies, Last Chance, The View from Down Here and In Your Eyes.Originally broadcast on September 20, 2021 on CHMR 93.5 FM in St. John's, and on other great stations across the country.
