The ministry of John Angell James, favoured though it was, marked the end of an era at Carrs Lane Congregational Church. When it came to ministerial handover, we observe a weakness of judgement in James which made room for a less than orthodox ministry at the church. The upshot was that sadly James's ministry legacy was not extended and built on with gospel vision by his successor, R. W. Dale. From noting this sad turn of events, we remind ourselves of the crucial nature of truth in a victorious Christian pilgrimage with a reading from Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress.   Featured Content: – 'John Angell James', Peter Seccombe, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 220 (January 1982).  - Excerpts concerning Mr Valiant-for-truth from 'Part the Second' of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (Banner of Truth ed., 1977, current ed., 2017), pages 348–350 and 373.   Buy The Pilgrim's Progress: https://banneroftruth.org/store/christian-living/pilgrims-progress/     Explore the work of the Banner: www.banneroftruth.org Subscribe to the magazine (print/digital/both): www.banneroftruth.org/magazine Leave us a voice message: www.speakpipe.com/magazinepodcast

He speaks with Eve about his US army service in Iraq, where his family fled 70 years ago, Iran, BDS, and his current work. The scourge of Israel hatred is a warning sign to all good people, not our problem alone. Then, an audio recording of an exclusive tour earlier in the day -on site - of exciting new findings at the Tel given by none other than archaeologist Dr. Scott Stripling. In this episode Laura interviews Katie Carr - author, business coach, mum and kayaker. Katie is currently on a huge adventure to plan and kayak the remaining areas of the shipping forecast that her late brother, Toby Carr, wasn't able to complete.  Katie finished the book 'Moderate Becoming Good Later - Sea Kayaking the Shipping Forecast' earlier this year - this is the book Toby hoped he would have had time to complete. Toby captured his adventures in recordings, photos, notes and videos - all of which made it possible for Katie to write 'Moderate Becoming Good Later' after his death.  Not only was Katie determined to tell Toby's story, but she is now determined to take on the challenge of kayaking the areas of the shipping forecast that he was sadly unable to - notably Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the North East of England.  Laura had the pleasure of learning more about Katie's challenge and motivations. Parenting two young children is a huge part of her planning, and we talk about navigating adventures as a mum, and taking on ‘mini adventures' for ourselves and our kids too.  I hope you enjoy hearing more about the resilient and inspirational Carrs through this interview with Katie. The book will be available to buy in all good book shops and online on 8 June 2023. Their flagship products have a suggested retail price that is nearly double those of legacy and competing brands. And, yet, Serenity Kids is outpacing them all. Launched in 2018, Serenity Kids markets shelf-stable, low sugar baby and toddler food made from organic and ethically sourced ingredients, such as regenerative farmed meats. The brand's pouches and grain-free puffs are sold in almost 8,000 stores across the U.S., a footprint that includes Walmart, Whole Foods, Target, Kroger, Wegmans and Sprouts. According to the company, Serenity Kids' revenue has increased 150X year-over-year since its debut and has raised $11.5 million in funding to date. Founders Serenity and Joe Carr note that sales growth and investor confidence are indicative of a shift in buying patterns from parents seeking nutritious, premium products for their children. In this episode, the Carrs spoke about their path to entrepreneurship, how a non-traditional focus group and decades of declining quality in the baby food aisle gave them confidence that Serenity Kids could fill a real need and why maintaining a premium price point is key to the brand's value proposition. They also discussed their thoughtful sourcing and operations strategies, how they developed a sophisticated understanding of the packaged food industry and their rigorous hiring process. Show notes: 0:45: Serenity & Joe Carr, Co-Founders, Serenity Kids – The Carrs met with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif at BevNET HQ in Newton, MA where they chatted about their visit to the Boston area before discussing how their interest in the paleo diet and the birth of their daughter laid the foundation for Serenity Kids, and why it was harder to educate natural channel consumers versus those who shop at conventional stores. They also spoke about the incredible yet unnerving opportunity to go national at Whole Foods early into the brand's development, the unexpected benefits of using regeneratively farmed meat and how they've aligned gross margin with price point. Later, they advised founders on how to assess their capital needs, why personal growth is deeply important to company culture and why they conduct “non-traditional” interviews with potential employees. A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS: • The themes of the season, bombs and beheadings, combine, as a spring breaker who's been spiking women's drinks gets a bomb strapped around his neck. • The Marses, Matty and the murderheads are still shuffling around their various theories about who the bomber is: Big Dick and Clyde trying to kill the Spring Break business for property prices; or the Maloofs, for reasons that nobody can really be arsed with any more. • Daniel Maloof is regretting ordering the hit on the Carrs, but too late! Dodie and Alonzo have video of them killing them… • ...but one has survived? What a twist! • Not enough jerks for you? This episode features the reappearances of Mercer, Lucky-in-a-wig and Toxic Max! • But in compensation we also see Vinnie, and... LEO! He's now an FBI agent and divorcé with a jacket full of snacks, there to tempt Veronica as she struggles with domestic bliss with Logan.  Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 4 episode 4: Heads You Lose, and delve into such mysteries as why Penn has a 6ft sub for a meeting with only three other people, why the Neptune Grand has been made over as a worse hotel, and the Optimus Prime of tiny jackets. A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS: • Daniel Maloof's having a shit one. He is being blackmailed because he was videoed masturbating to a cam girl. He's still being accused of murder by Penn all over the TV. He is kidnapped, strung up, stoned and dickpunched by the Carrs. Then he is rescued by Alonzo and Dodie, who are going to kill him - but Daniel turns the tables! And the other side is also really shitty.  • Sea Sprite Bombing Suspect of the Week is Matty's pick: mole-having gum vending machine-filling Perry, who blows himself up when the police come for him.  • But Veronica doesn't buy that he's a culprit, and with another bomb going off at the end of the episode, the mystery continues. Unsurprisingly. • More surprising is that Veronica actually has some fun! She gets to try on Nicole's punching gloves, drop some E, dance dance dance - then puke puke puke the next morning.  • Keith's also having fun - he and Clyde bond over golf!  • And Penn and his group of Murderheads are, unfortunately, still in our lives, dredging up Lilly Kane's murder, advancing some wild theories about the Sea Sprite bomber - but one does give Veronica the link between the bombing and El Despiadado. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 4 episode 3: Keep Calm and Party On, and probe such mysteries as how Alonzo and Dodie are delivering the heads to El Despiadado back in Mexico; if They Might Be Giants were around too late for Logan's cut-off date for culture; whether Logan's jacket is available in Jenny-size; and whether the show is trying to coin an in-universe version of BDE. This month Patreons chose the theme of ‘Lights above The Marshes' and so for this episode I will be looking at the marshes, fens and Carrs of Britain and the folklore surrounding the wee beasties that live there. The story from lore for this episode is ‘The Tiddy Mun.' In the extended version of this episode available via my Patreon, I will be looking at Lantern Men, Toad Men and the plantlore of the fens, as well as telling the story of 'Long Tom & The Dead Hand.' There are some dark folkloric characters explored in this podcast and so, as always,  I would recommend that you should listen through first before listening with younger members of your household.  To 'Rewild Yourself Through Story', join me on Patreon for digital zines, audio stories, book reviews, digital downloads, folklore and extended episodes of the podcast. www.patreon.com/ddstoryteller For more stories woven with folklore and the old ways you can find me via the following channels: www.facebook.com/ddstoryteller www.instagram.com/dd_storyeller Join the Stories From Lore group for Facebook lives, behind the scenes, folklore, music and books. www.facebook.com/groups/storiesfromlore Music Attribution: Midnight Tale by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) licensed under Creative Commons: Attribution 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Sound Effects via www.orangefreesounds.com Episode Resources Books   Crossley- Holland, Kevin, (1997) The Old Stories: Folk Tales From East Anglia And The Fen Country, Colt Books.  Pryor, Francis (2019) The Fens: Discovering England's Ancient Depths, Head of Zeus. A wonderful story from the wilds of the Carrlands of North Lincolnshire. It's a little dark (literally) and the horrors and crawly creatures amongst the watery bogs and marshes make this the perfect story for when the nights are drawing in. Light a fire or pop a pretend one your television, get out the candles and be prepared to be just a touch scared in the best possible way. Afterwards we discover a possible reason why this story is so surreal, how we treated malaria without quinine and what surprising crops are grown here. Hazel Reeves is a brilliantly talented sculptress who tells stories in bronze. In recent years she has secured several prestigious commissions among them the Sir Nigel Gresley sculpture in Kings Cross, London commemorating the engineer and innovator of steam trains, and the Cracker Packer statue dedicated to the women who have worked in the Carrs biscuit factory, now McVitie's in Carlisle, for over a hundred years. I've been keen to talk to Hazel ever since I was involved in doing some preventive conservation work on her incredible sculpture of Emmeline Pankhurst, Our Emmeline, in the centre of Manchester. Today we discuss her creative journey and why she loves telling stories in bronze. Join us for this lively chat and to look at examples of Hazel's work and read the transcription of the interview, go to www.sculpturevulture.co.uk/hazelreeves/ Sample of Interview (Transcription) Lucy: Today, I thought I'd kick off our chat by asking when she first felt drawn to creating sculpture? Hazel: Well, I think you have to go back to when I was younger and I was desperate to go to art school and my parents said, ‘No!' And so, I sort of forgot about that artistic career for many years. Then I was in the Dominican Republic working with the UN on women's rights and I suddenly got back in touch with all the things I was passionate about: music, drumming, dancing, arts. When I came home, it just came to me that I was going to be a portrait sculptor, which was quite bizarre because I'd never actually done any sculpting nor any portraits, but it's the only time in my life I've actually suddenly realized I had a calling. Lucy: Did your parents have nothing to do with the arts? Was it very alien to them? Is that why they discouraged it or was it that it wasn't a proper job? Hazel: Oh, all of the above. According to my mum, art is a luxury and you only did arts if you couldn't do anything else. My eldest sister was already at art school and I think they were also worried about having two penniless artists in the family. So it was like, "No, you're more academic. You could go off and go to college." And so it was many years later that actually I rediscovered that this is what I should always have been doing. This is my journey and I wouldn't be the sculptor I am now if I hadn't been on that journey. Lucy: So it definitely was something that came to...you'd had to sort of squash it down for quite a long time. I wonder what it was about the Dominican Republic that brought it all to the forefront of your mind. Is it the environment there? Is it a creative place? Hazel: It's a very creative place. I really got into the Afro-Dominican folkloric scene there. That's very much about their music and the dance but it was also a very vibrant place, a very creative place, a very musical place. Also, you're completely out of your normal environment. Making that transition from the UK to that sort of country, where there is deep poverty in some places, but also working with the UN was a tremendous experience. It was particularly the nightlife and the nights out dancing that just really sort of shook my whole system up. It was like, ah, yeah, I'm actually not somebody to be sitting at a desk. This week we talk about RV Clubs and why you may want to consider joining one. We talk about their many benefits, including their efforts to help us find and preserve free overnight places to camp by promoting a Good Neighbor policy. Our guests are the people who run one of the most popular and active such organizations, Travis and Melanie Carr of the Escapees and Xcapers RV Clubs. RV clubs serve as a network of like-minded folks, offering support, encouragement, adventure and fun, usually with special perks and discounts for its members.  I think you’ll enjoy meeting the Carrs in the interview of the week segment, coming up in just a few minutes. But also this week, we’ll update you on our activities, share the RV News if the weeks, answer some of your questions and get another great off the beaten oath report from our friends the Burketts. MIKE - Look for it later this summer. We arrived here Sunday after spending the past several days near Montreal, Quebec, attending a rally put on by the French-speaking Leisure Travel Vans club of Quebec. Although neither of us speak French, club members made us feel very welcome and we had a wonderful time meeting folks and touring their RVs.  Jennifer and Mike peaking at the Quebec rally JENNIFER -Many of those attending spoke English as well and when Jen and I gave a little talk to the group they provided a translator. We've attended many rallies and gatherings over the years but this was one of the best organized such events e have ever seen. We had a ball! The International Dark Sky Association promotes reducing light pollution so people can see the stars in all their glory, and recognizes certain spots throughout the country and even world  that do this. I highly recommend finding a Dark Sky spot near you. Jen and I had members of this organization on our podcast a while back. To learn more and hear that podcast, click here. JENNIFER Campers urged to stay below 4,000 feet in New York's Adirondacks to protect alpine zone If you are heading to the Adirondacks, where Mike and I are this week, be sure to keep all your boondocking below 4,000 feet elevation. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is advising people against camping above 4,000 feet in the High Peaks and is ticketing those who do not follow these guidelines. The agency is trying to keep campers out so plants in the fragile Alpine zone won't be trampled,. contributing to soil erosion. MIKE Writer describes his love affair with state parks, offering beautiful places to camp often inexpensively  When Jen and I are somewhere new to an area and hear there is a state or provincial (if we are in Canada) campground nearby, we often check it out. State campgrounds are usually in beautiful locations and are relatively inexpensive. So when I read an article recently in the New York Times by a writer who tells of traveling the country and searching out previously unknown gems in each state, we had to share. On January 20, 2016, the Supreme Court decided three consolidated death penalty cases: Kansas v. Carr, a second Kansas v. Carr, and Kansas v. Gleason. -- A Kansas jury sentenced Sidney Gleason to death for killing a co-conspirator and her boyfriend to cover up the robbery of an elderly man. In a joint proceeding, a Kansas jury also sentenced brothers Reginald and Jonathan Carr to death for a crime spree that culminated in the brutal rape, robbery, kidnapping, and execution-style shooting of five young men and women. The Supreme Court of Kansas vacated the death sentences in each case, holding that the sentencing instructions violated the Eighth Amendment by failing “to affirmatively inform the jury that mitigating circumstances need only be proved to the satisfaction of the individual juror in that juror’s sentencing decision and not beyond a reasonable doubt.” It also held that the Carrs’ Eighth Amendment right “to an individualized capital sentencing determination” was violated by the trial court’s failure to sever their sentencing proceedings. -- The two questions before the U.S. Supreme Court were: (1) whether the Constitution required the sentencing courts to instruct the juries that mitigating circumstances “need not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt”; and (2) whether the Constitution required severance of the Carrs’ joint sentencing proceedings. -- By a vote of 8-1, the Supreme Court reversed the judgment of the Kansas Supreme Court and remanded the cases. Justice Scalia delivered the opinion of the Court, which held that (1) the Eighth Amendment does not require capital-sentencing courts to instruct a jury that mitigating circumstances need not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, and (2) the Constitution did not require severance of joint sentencing proceedings because the contention that the admission of mitigating evidence by one defendant could have "so infected" the jury's consideration of the other defendant's sentence as to amount to a denial of due process does not stand in light of all the evidence presented at the guilty and penalty phases relevant to the jury's sentencing determination. Justice Scalia’s majority opinion was joined by the Chief Justice and Justices Kennedy, Thomas, Ginsburg, Breyer, Alito, and Kagan. Justice Sotomayor filed a dissenting opinion. -- To discuss the case, we have Kent S. Scheidegger, who is Legal Director & General Counsel at Criminal Justice Legal Foundation.
