Douglas J Cohen Doug received the 2010 Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting and won two Richard Rodgers Awards for writing book, music, and lyrics for NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY (produced twice off-Broadway resulting in over 100 productions worldwide; an upcoming NY commercial production in-the-works through producer Larry Hirschhorn) and THE GIG (O'Neill National Music Theatre Conference, Manhattan Theatre Club Stage II, Goodspeed, York Theatre Company concert on CD and reading in conjunction with the Noël Coward Prize, and Sacramento Music Circus). Doug is the composer/lyricist of THE BIG TIME (book by Douglas Carter Beane) which debuted at the NYMF Festival; plans are underway for a Broadway-bound production. Nominated for a 2005 Drama Desk Award (Outstanding Lyrics, CHILDREN'S LETTERS TO GOD), he penned co-book, music, and lyrics for THE OPPOSITE OF SEX (Williamstown Theatre Festival) and received a Jonathan Larson Grant for composing BARNSTORMER, which has recently been optioned for New York by producer Lawrence Poster. Doug is the composer of GLIMMERGLASS (NAMT Conference 2000, readings through the Village Theatre and Melting Pot, productions at Goodspeed at Chester, Spirit of Broadway – Best Production of 2008) and A CHARLES DICKENS CHRISTMAS (produced by Theatreworks/USA and licensed through MTI). He also penned book and lyrics to VALENTINO'S TANGO (with music by Howard Marren, choreographed/directed by Chet Walker) and contributed original songs to JACKIE COLLINS' HOLLYWOOD LIES, and BOOZY (Robert Moses), the latter produced by Les Freres Corbusier and directed by Tony nominee Alex Timbers, which enjoyed runs at both the Ohio Theatre and Culture Project. His latest musicals are NINE WIVES with collaborator Dan Elish (which has been optioned by producers Larry Hirschhorn and Jayson Raitt and selected for the 2013 Goodspeed Festival of New Artists) HELEN OF TROY written with future West End lyricist/ playwright Zoe Samuel and workshopped at Coastal Carolina University, and BRIDGES, commissioned by The Berkeley Playhouse written with BARNSTORMER collaborator, Cheryl L. Davis. His new play, LOVELY SEND ANYWHERE, a finalist for the Laurents-Hatcher Award, has been developed at the Lark Play Development Center and received a reading in October 2012 starring Santino Fontana and Condola Rashad. A graduate of Amherst College, Doug recently joined the faculty of the Neighborhood Playhouse where he teaches the 2nd year students in song interpretation. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild, ASCAP, and the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. How to Survive a Killer Musical: Agony and Ecstasy on the Road to Broadway When the young composer-lyricist Douglas Cohen first secured the musical rights to the novel No Way to Treat a Lady by William Goldman—the acclaimed author of The Princess Bride and Marathon Man—he hoped it would be his big break, the first step on a gilt path to artistic triumph and commercial success in the form of a hit Broadway musical. What happened after that, while memorable, was anything but. How to Survive a Killer Musical chronicles Cohen's decade-long quest to bring that musical to the stage—writing, re-writing, and shepherding it across the US and Europe amidst all manner of adversity and plain rotten luck. It's a fascinating portrait of passion, persistence, and resilience—a coming-of-age story populated with famous mentors and formidable adversaries, told with refreshing honesty and humor.

“The story of Jazz Dance is the story of America.” My guests today are the creators of the acclaimed new film documentary: Uprooted – The Journey of Jazz Dance, which has been winning awards at film festivals around the world, and in the US can currently be seen on HBO Max. All three of the film's creators are from the UK, they all have extensive training and backgrounds in dance, and with this movie they are all making their feature length film debuts. The film's director is Khadifa Wong who trained as a dancer and actress but became frustrated by the lack of opportunities for performers of color, and then realized that her true passion lay behind the camera. Producer, Lisa Donmall-Reeve, migrated to film following a very successful twenty year career as a performer that included playing many leading roles on London's West End. And dancer, choreographer and educator, Zak Nemorin - who conceived the film - has appeared in seventeen West End musicals and is the Head of Jazz Dance at Millennium Performing Arts in London. To create the film they interviewed 70 experts - dancers, choreographers, educators and historians - regarding the history of Jazz dance as well as the evolution of its many roots and branches, including Debbie Allen, Josh Bergasse, Al Blackstone, Andy Blankenbuehler, Bob Boross, Camile Brown, Warren Carlyle, Graciela Danielle, George Faison, Thomas De Frantz, Karen Hubbard, Saleemah Knight, Bonnie Langford, Martine Mattox, Jerry Mitchell, Mandy Moore, Walter Painter, Travis Payne, Arlene Phillips, Chita Rivera, Susan Stroman, and Chet Walker to name only a few. Along the way they explore where Jazz dance originated and how it became the dance language of Broadway. I highly recommend it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The newest installment in our ongoing series on 50-point games takes us to the late 60s and early 70s, a transformative period in NBA history and for 50-point games. Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring fades away, Jerry West bows out and new stars like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Rick Barry emerge. A new upstart pro basketball league (ABA) joins the fray and their inclusion of a 3-point line makes 50-point games easier than ever. During this period, the 50+ point club becomes less exclusive. Up to this point (1949-66), we’ve only had 18 players with 50+ in a game (169 times—116 by Wilt Chamberlain). All of the previous 50+ scorers were eventual Hall of Famers with the lone exception of 5-time All-Star Rudy LaRusso. In this time period though, we’ll have 35 new members of the club with only 21 of them eventually making it to the Hall of Fame. Overall from 1967-1974, we’ll see 84 50-point games overall with Barry leading the charge at 17, Kareem chipping in eight and Wilt still putting up 7 including a heroic final 50+ point game. From 1967-74, 1.06% of games featured a 50+ point game. Curtis Harris of Pro Hoops History joins us again to discuss the 1967 Philadelphia 76ers, the record-setting team that ended the Boston Celtics' 8-year championship streak, on the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast. We talk about Curtis' project with the 76ers called Spirit of the Champion (http://www.nba.com/sixers/spiritofthechampion), commemorating the 68-win championship team that is on the short list of greatest teams in pro basketball history, and what it was like to attend the team's 50th anniversary dinner. We look at how the team fits at a key juncture in NBA history, when the ABA and expansion began to dramatically change the sport. We discuss how the franchise transitioned from the Syracuse Nationals in the early 1960s, how established stars like Hal Greer and Chet Walker adjusted to Wilt Chamberlain joining the team in 1965, the brutal playoff losses to the Celtics (including "Havlicek stole the ball" in 1965), what in Chamberlain's game changed in 1967, and how coach Alex Hannum knew how to work with superstars and bench players and everyone in between. We also discuss the smooth shooting and rugged defense of Greer, Walker's clutch scoring, Billy Cunningham springing all over the court, Luke Jackson's prowess on the boards, Wali Jones' perimeter freedom, and Larry Costello being the old man of the team. We also talk about the contributions of the tough Dave Gambee, rookie Matt Guokas, Bill Melchionni and Bob Weiss, and what ended up preventing the Sixers from becoming a dynasty.
