From the story of a young sex worker to one about an aging star, another about a transgender drug lord, and another about a troubled immigrant and brilliant architect, this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Picture tell stories that are both epic and intimate. Pete Hammond walks us through the nominees and what to watch for on Hollywood’s Night of Nights. Hammond, widely considered to be one of the pre-eminent awards analysts for both film and television, has for the past 14 years been Deadline's Awards Columnist covering the year-round Oscar and Emmy seasons. He is also Deadline's Chief Film Critic, having previously reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide for which he was a contributing editor. In addition to writing, Hammond is also host of the PBS SoCal Cinema Series and the weekly PBS television series "Must See Movies." He previously held producing positions at "Entertainment Tonight," "Extra," "Access Hollywood," "The Arsenio Hall Show" and "The Martin Short Show." Hammond is only the second journalist to have received the Publicists Guild of America’s Press Award twice, in 1996 and 2013. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
An accidentally rhyming title for this week's episode of BBC Radio 1's Screen Time as friends of the show Clarisse Loughrey (The Independent's Chief Film Critic) and Ian Sandwell (Head of film at Digital Spy) stop by to give Ali their thoughts on two of the biggest films out right now, namely Wicked and Gladiator 2 - plus a few other bits and pieces as well. Then at the end, as a special bonus extra, the eternally charming Jude Law talks about his role in the new Star Wars TV series Skeleton Crew (out December 3rd, fact fans), carefully dancing around whether his character is a Jedi or not. He's done this press junket dance before, it seems...
In a preview of this week's Pop Pantheon: All Access episode, the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked is a smash hit, raking in $114 million dollars during its first weekend and earning rave reviews from critics and fans alike. One of its two leads, pop diva Ariana Grande, is also earning plaudits in her first headlining film role, even including some serious Oscar buzz. But while many pop stars have attempted a Hollywood crossover, very few— even those with a successful film or two under their belts— have been able to turn that into a long-term successful film career. Why is that? And will things be different for Ariana? Chief Film Critic at Vanity Fair and host of the podcast Little Gold Men Richard Lawson joins Louie and Russ to break down Ariana's performance in Wicked and what it portends for her future on the silver screen. The good name of Hollywood has never been so marred and muddied as it's been over the last decade. It's not just the myriad examples of recent big blockbuster flops, it's the assumed impropriety of the average denizen of Tinseltown now beginning to include high crimes such as rape and even murder. Piers Morgan intends to cover the current events of Joker: Folie à Deux, the Netflix dramatization of the Menendez Brothers' murders and the unfurling scandal of Diddy with gusto. To do just that, Uncensored contributor Esther Krakue, author of 'The Case for Cancel Culture' Ernest Owens, Jeremy Prime from Geeks and Gamers, Chief Film Critic for Variety Peter Debruge and former Mafia boss Michael Franzese all give their expert opinions. A cringey segment on Saturday Night Live went viral earlier this week ahead of the Oscars; lampooning the Irish accent and playing into the drunken, fighting Irish stereotype. Jimmy Kimmel also relied on the cliché twice during his presenting of the Academy Awards. Eyes rolled all over Ireland. But can we really get offended by the stereotype when our collective drinking habits are baffling to so many other nationalities? Chief Film Critic for The Irish Times, Donald Clarke, says yes. There's a litany of very offensive SNL sketches and a new 'Irish Ancestor Tiktok' phenomenon that's proving just as tone deaf. But comedian and host of the podcast 'An Irishman Abroad', Jarlath Regan, reckons we all need to grow a thicker skin. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Hosted on Acast. This week I spoke to Clarisse Loughrey, the chief film critic for The Independent. She also acts as a regular stand-in for Mark Kermode on BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘Kermode and Mayo’ and runs That Darn Movie Show, a weekly review channel on YouTube. We cover lots and a lot of it is new ground for the podcast because I’ve never interviewed a film critic before - so we talk about the art of pitching, how Clarisse learnt what a good freelance rate was, how she learnt to trust her opinion and put it on the Internet, what her writing process is, the fear you get when your opinion of a movie differs from your peers and fair bit more, which I think will hopefully be insightful not just for people interesting in a career in film criticism, but also to anyone that reads film reviews - if that’s not too audacious - and what goes into that. So thank you so much to Clarisse for sharing that perspective. This is episode 47 of Best Girl Grip!

Composer Erich Korngold was best known for his swashbuckling film scores like The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood. The conductor John Wilson assembled a special orchestra, the Sinfonia of London, to perform some of his later works, including a symphony, for a new recording entitled simply Korngold. Samira talks to the conductor, as well as to Korngold’s biographer Brendan Carroll. What makes brilliant interior design and can we all do it? Before Geoff heads out for Cannes, he and Rob sit down with Owen Gleiberman, Chief Film Critic at Variety, to talk about how this year's slate of films is pushing the boundaries of what people expect from the highly influential, but famously traditional festival. The three discuss the impact of bringing Jane Campion's TOP OF THE LAKE and David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS to the festival (3:30), the significance of increasing the number of female filmmakers represented in the lineup (11:25), and why this is such an important festival for Netflix (17:20). Products of the Mind: A Conversation About the Intersection of Business + Creativity
Welcome to Episode 26 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with journalist, Chief Film Critic of the New York Times, and author: A. O. Scott. “The point of real criticism I think is to move beyond just the statement of opinion, which isn’t necessarily very helpful to anyone, and turn your opinion into something useful, into an argument that people can grapple with.” Today we chat with Tony Scott: a film critic for the New York Times and author of Better Living Through Criticism. Tony talks a bit about the role of print vs online journalism as they relate to criticism; what goes on in a writer’s head; and the perceptions a critic might have of a popular hit movie. What is criticism? Have there always been critics? Will there always be critics? What impact might criticism have on the thing being criticized? Tony fills us in on the unique role of criticism, and the interesting dynamics between criticism and film versus television. Is it possible Netflix and Hulu are changing the way we think about on-screen entertainment? Think being a critic is easy? Tony discusses getting blasted on Twitter by Samuel L. Jackson after his review of The Avengers. He also discusses the outcomes and possible benefits of these interactions as they relate to journalism overall. Ever wonder what inspires a critic to do what they do? Learn about the kind of influence satire films and Mad Magazine had on Tony’s career. We’ll also discuss the “golden age of television,” serial shows versus movies, and what might make a film boring. This and more today with A. O. Scott. In the penultimate episode of the series I join - in my opinion - the world's greatest living film critic, The New York Times co-chief film critic, Manohla Dargis. Manohla confesses that she fell in love with Michael Mann's work watching The Last of the Mohicans. And to close, I join co-author of THE SOPRANOS SESSIONS, TV and film critic for Vulture and Editor-at-Large of RogerEbert.com - the equally legendary - Matt Zoller Seitz. Matt tells me that Magua is one of his favourite characters in the history of movies, and so much more.ABOUT MANOHLA DARGIS Manohla Dargis grew up in the East Village in New York, where she attended public school and was a frequent attendee at both St. Mark's Cinema and Theater 80. Hoberman led to her being hired to write about avant-garde cinema for the Voice. She has been the co-chief film critic for The New York Times since 2004. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband. The format of the podcast, which slightly differs from ONE HEAT MINUTE, utilises the entire final twelve-minute climax of Mohicans as a portal to explore the themes of the movie. The show examines the cross-section of political apparatuses, colonial superpower wrangling, and Mr Mann's riff on the "great American hero." The final episode - once again will feature Mr Mann to unpack his intentions with the film in the conception and orchestration of its grand ending.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations
