LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL is one of those films that falls within both the Found Footage subcategory and the Cinema Verite subcategories of filmmaking. With its documentary style and its “live” camera shooting, the movie gives us the feel of both before and behind the cameras of a late night television talk show.Night Owls With Jack Delroy is one of the many, but most successful, variety talk shows that are competing with Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. While beginning to wane in the ratings, Jack (David Dastmalchian) and his team decide to try to make an epic Halloween special including psychics, magicians, and parapsychologists as guests. Unfortunately for everyone involved the supernatural may actually be a real thing. The movie originally made its premiere in 2023 at the SXSW film festival and received some buzz because of it. Released to theaters on March 22nd, 2024, and then on April 19th, 2024 it arrived to Shudder. Receiving excellent reviews by critics, the Cairnes brothers written and directed film, has also been had positive feedback by audiences too. Your co-hosts take a look at this new film and give their thoughts.

Les Thornbury is a documentarian and astute student of nature and people, in other words, of life. After time spent in Vietnam aboard a "wallowing, wood-hulled minesweeper," he retuned home in 1972 and borrowed an old, spring wound Bolex film camera. He wrote and then made a documentary of the Currituck Banks along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A second film about the NC Coastal Area Management Act followed. Both were televised statewide and Les' fate was sealed. After graduating from college, Mary Thornbury, alongside a long a successful career in Human Resources, joined Les in many assignments for filming profiles of the distinguished recipients of the North Carolina Awards, the highest honor bestowed across numerous areas for individuals in North Carolina. This married couple have one adult son, David. While officially retired, they are migrating back into the documentary world, this time taking advantage of the many technological advances that are captured within the Android phone that Les holds in his hand. They are doing profiles on seniors and their varied artistic pursuits. They're in the early stages of this latest engagement of their lifelong passion. Jeffrey Delano Davis–Director Jeffrey spent his college years studying drama and literature at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, before marching forth to New York City with $70. After an extended couch surfing period,he settled into the East Village, managed a coffee shop, and performed in Shakespeare plays in a parking lot at night. Ironically, the coffee shop offered as much artistic insight as performing did. Conversations he had with artists, filmmakers, and actors shaped his understanding of artmaking. Some of the people he quizzed were Brian DePalma, Daniel Day-Lewis, Calista Flockhart, and John Leguizamo. His first TV performance was in rap great Big Punisher's video "You Came Up"as a valet. Feeling the need to expand his horizons,he auditioned for the Rutgers University MFA Acting program, was accepted, and spent three years studying under William Esper. Upon graduating, he acted in numerous plays in NYC, including "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Harlem Arts Center,"The Pavilion" directed by Michael Kostroff ("The Wire," "The Black List"), and Ken Greller's play "Troll" at The Secret Theater. Currently, he is happily ensconced in Red Bank, New Jersey, with his wife (and producing partner) Maria and their two daughters Vera and Josie. In 2018, Jeffrey penned and directed a short film called "Three Sonnets" based on a dilemma he faced when his wife was pregnant with their first daughter, which became a surprise hit. The film played multiple festivals and received television distribution on five continents. Jeffrey completed two films during the pandemic; "Breathing Room" a searing portrait of a nursing home on the verge of collapse told from the vantage point of a speech pathologist, and "The Art of Catastrophe" an intimate portrait of his family life during quarantine.Director Statement–“The Art of Catastrophe” It all started with my mother-in-law. She comes from a line of Italians who survived World War 2, post-war deprivations, and numerous other catastrophes. She wished her relatives had captured more of their experience. So, when we were in the midst of the first wave of COVID, she said to me, "Grab your camera! Snap out of it!".I snapped out of it. I shot nearly sixty hours of footage of my family coping with quarantine, its quiet and not so quiet terrors; food shortages, sick children, and most pressing, isolation and despair. I filmed "The Art of Catastrophe" to maintain my sanity. Everybody in my family caught the bug and started creating, painting, singing, filming with me (my four-year-old shot one clip in the film), dancing, etc. We made "The Art of Catastrophe" because we had to.In its form, "The Art of Catastrophe" is a new type of Cinema Verite film that takes inspiration from Instagram Stories as much as D.A. Pennebaker and Nanni Moretti.Do enjoy.Jeff SYNOPSISMeet Jeff, Maria, Vera, and Josie Davis. They're your regular American family going through a once in a 100-year pandemic. Watch as they dance, sing, paint, and vacation in their driveway, all to fight back the one thing more dangerous than the virus; despair.Culled from nearly 60 hours of footage shot at the height of the pandemic in New Jersey, “The Art of Catastrophe” is an unprecedented and unflinching look at one family's struggle for meaning amidst chaos.“The Art of Catastrophe” Trailerhttps://vimeo.com/574115696Like to have a ASC cinematographer as a mentor?Have you thought of upgrading your cinematography game? Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor have an incredibly interesting and wide-ranging conversation with directing duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. We chat about their new movie Things Heard & Seen (now available on Netflix), then dive back into their eclectic, accomplished career. From the serendipitous way they came to make the doc Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen's to the unintentional development of the underrated The Extra Man, starring Kevin Kline and Paul Dano. Their HBO film Cinema Verite is briefly mentioned, a wonderful telling of the making of the groundbreaking PBS documentary An American Family from 1973. Other topics include a failed reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein, the nightmarish post-production process on The Nanny Diaries thanks to Harvey Weinstein, and why Robert has edited most of their films himself. There's also a delightful detour into discussing their semi-lost documentary Wanderlust, which examines road movies and their place in Americana. An unsolvable issue with rights to film clips used in the edit made it unreleasable. There's also references to Danny Peary's 1981 book Cult Movies and Stoner by John Williams. This Spotlight Episode of More Like This highlights two documentaries centering on grief and loss with a fictional twist. Beginning with Kirsten Johnson’s "Dick Johnson is Dead," Michael Moore questions Johnson about the humorous approach to her father’s looming death and all the ways she incorporated fantasy to share their familial story about dementia. Then, Johnson switches roles to moderate a roundtable for the documentary short "What Would Sophia Loren Do?" The film explores Loren’s external influence on one family’s connection to Italy, grief and cinema. Geralyn White Dreyfous, Robin Honan, Ross Kauffman, Regina K. Scilly and the film’s lead heartthrob and grandmother, Nancy Kulik join in conversation. Sì, grazie!
On this special cross-over episode, I'm joined by David Quinones for a conversation we had on our Bird Road Podcast about the fascinating 2020 film, Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets. Filmed to look like the closing day in the life of a Las Vegas bar and its regulars (but actually a scripted narrative film), Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets provided us the perfect opportunity to reminisce on our 20s when we spent nearly every night in bars like this. We also get into a bunch of puzzle pieces including Cinema Verite, Another Round, Last Night at the Alamo and Anomalisa.

For nearly sixty years, Werner Herzog has been a force in world cinema, serving as an inspiration to both mainstream and independent filmmakers alike with his strange combination of radical daring and gentle humanism - especially in the world of documentary film, where he made a mark with experimental work like Lessons in Darkness and Fata Morgana, and upset his contemporaries with his 'Minnesota Declaration' against Cinema Verite which argued for blurring the lines between fact and fiction in the service of truth. But MG argues that he topped himself with his 2005 masterpiece - the bittersweet, funny, and inspiring Grizzly Man!

Cinema Verite: In this week's episode, Kelley and Julia discuss their top two movies that could be their biopics, also delving into the darkness of mental health when untreated in relation to childhood trauma. Kelley's PicksThe Wolfpack: is a documentary film about homeschooled siblings, the Angulos, who are locked inside their Manhattan apartment and held hostage from the outside world by their father. They found the escape they needed from their reality through watching and re-enacting their favorite movies. Kelley has specific memories of her and her siblings using the same coping mechanism as the Angulo siblings; reenacting movies to escape from reality. Similar to Kelley's homeschooling experience, it did not seem as though the Angulos had a real school structure. As a result of her similar experience, Kelley has a blog dedicated to evaluating homeschooling from an analytical perspective. It is evident that isolation has an effect on socialization and is the reason the bonds between the Angulo siblings were so strong. Play acting was a way for them to pass the time and bond with each other. This coping technique was their attempt at controlling their environment through a pretend reality. The Babadook: is about a single mother, distraught over her husband's death, with a son who begins to fear a monster that is in the house. She soon discovers the Babadook for herself and can't escape it. Kelley found herself emotionally drained at the end because she realized the mom in the movie was her mom. The mom allowed the idea of the Babadook to manifest. The Babadook represents the mental illness manifesting in hers and her son's life. You can't get rid of the Babadook. Kelley's mom was just as good at creating fear. She would allow the kids to read adult, Frank Peretti books about demons fighting souls that proved to be terrifying for the kids. Even with companionship with other siblings, they were always fearful to sleep. Feared what was under the bed, closets, in the shower, cabinet, any hiding space. Julia's PicksTangled: is a Disney animation of a classic tale. Beautiful princess Rapunzel was kidnapped as a baby and trapped in a tower by Gothel. Her magical long blonde hair has the power to provide eternal youth, and the evil Gothel uses this power to keep her young. At the age of 18, Rapunzel becomes curious about the outside world, and when a prince uses her tower as a refuge, she asks him to help her escape. Julia found that the manipulation techniques used by Gothel were similar to her mom's. Like Julia's mom, Gothel made the things that Rapunzel wanted to do come across as a personal attack, using Gas lighting. Carrie: is about a quiet and sensitive teen who experiences bullying at school and abuse from her mother at home. She discovers that she has supernatural powers and gets invited to go to the prom, where things end up taking a dark turn. After watching this movie, Julia was terrified by how closely her mom and Carrie's mom resembled each other. Sex and body image was another striking similarity. Like Carrie's mom, Julia's mom considered boobs and curves to be dirty and shameful. The opening period scene was relatable due to the insensitivity of the situation. Julia shared the same despair as Carrie and had no idea what was happening. Her mom just shoved a bSupport the show (https://www.thefamilytiespodcast.com/subscribe/)

Pablo Bryant, Fish and David Peck talk about their new film Cartooning from the Deep End, politics and power, personal responsibility, why life is precious and asking good questions and living in a sell out culture. Synopsis In this feature documentary we discover the dangerously funny cartoonist Mr. Fish, struggling to make a living in an industry that is dying out. In a world where consumerism is king, and opportunities are few, will this uncensored artist find a way to sell his art, or be forced to sell himself out? Mr. Fish has been published in the LA weekly, Harpers, the Village Voice, The Nation and truthdig.com, as well as having his first book GO FISH published through Akashic press. F.X Feeney says, “He places you in the contradiction….He is a poet who’s operating with a cartoonists pen, and with a satirist’s goal of making you see further.” This intimate documentary follows the artist as he struggles to stay true to his creativity in a world where biting satiric humour has an ever-diminishing commercial value. Undeterred, Mr. Fish meets his plight head-on and with an abundance of creative energy. In the course of the film he curates a show and produces a book on the history of the art form, develops an animation series, and stages a gallery show of new original fine art. But the demands of raising a family overtake his freelance opportunities, and Mr. Fish is forced to make devastating choices. Ultimately CARTOONING FROM THE DEEP END is about the kinds of compromises a radical artist makes (or refuses to make) while trying to live in a traditional society. Watch the trailer here. Biography Pablo Bryant has been the Director of Photography on four feature documentaries and has shot additional photography on many other projects, including HBO’s Cinema Verite’ , and the documentary The Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Ellen Page. He filmed in India and Nepal for the National Film Board of Canada’s Tulku, which aired on CBC television, and finished shooting the documentary Crazy Wisdom in 2010. In addition to his work as a cameraman he has produced, and directed a short documentary about the epidemic of homeless children in the US called Stand Up For Kids. He shot the DVD special features for MADMEN season 4 and 5, and finished shooting on When the Iron Bird Flies in 2012 and Began shooting on a feature documentary called Master Zhou in April 2013. And we've got two Jewish guests joining us: First, our favorite film critic Jordan Hoffman returns to tell us all about the summer's best movies, including the new film War For the Planet of the Apes, which he explains is actually a story about Jews. Then we talk to Stacy Berman about her journey from running fitness boot camps in Central Park to apprenticing as a shaman and incorporating natural medicine into her training program, The System by Stacy. Welcome to NWP at the Movies! This week, the pantsless ones are joined by film critic, actor, artist, and all around good dude, John Gholson. Movies are the topic of the day, but as always we begin with what we’ve been playing and listener mail. This week, we talk about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, Patrick’s intro to iOS games, XCOM, and Julian’s existential gaming crisis. John attended the Fantastic Fest movie festival in Austin recently. This particular film fest focuses on quirky horror, action, and sci-fi movies, and John clues us in on Dredd, Cloud Atlas, and My Amityville Horror among others. We get deep into recent films as well, such as Argo and Seven Psycopaths, along with Rob’s recent trip to the Hamptons International Film Festival. We close out this episode talking about movies based on video games. Yeah, they all kind of suck, but there’s some fun to be had, as well. Enjoy Rob and John as they sit as polar opposites on nearly every movie! Thrill to Rob condemning Patrick and Julian’s favorite gaming flicks! Try not to fall asleep as we talk for far too long about the Resident Evil films! We hope you enjoyed this movie-centric episode. Join us in two weeks for our Halloween spectacular. Tell us your favorite scary games on our Facebook fan page and we’ll work them into the show. Featured Music: Hans Zimmer- Theme from The Critic Brendan Small- Jazz Fight Tomoyasu Hotei- Battle Without Honor or Humanity Utah Saints- Utah Saints Take on the Theme From Mortal Kombat
