In this episode of the OODAcast, Bob Gourley speaks with Ian Brown, retired Marine Corps officer and author of A New Conception of War, which explores the influence of John Boyd on the Marine Corps and the evolution of maneuver warfare. Ian shares insights from his 20-year career in the Marines, including his experiences as a CH-53 helicopter pilot, forward air controller, and operations officer at the Brute Krulak Center for Innovation and Future Warfare. The conversation dives into the history and adaptability of the Marine Corps, Boyd's impact on military strategy, and how maneuver warfare became central to Marine Corps doctrine. Ian discusses Boyd's unique ability to synthesize knowledge from multiple disciplines, his contributions beyond the well-known OODA loop, and his lasting influence on competitive decision-making across military and business environments. Ian also previews his next book project, which will compile full transcripts of Boyd's recorded presentations, offering a deeper look into his strategic thinking. The discussion touches on leadership, decision-making, and the importance of adapting mental models for success—principles that apply beyond warfare to business, strategy, and national security. Whether you're a military historian, strategist, or business leader, this episode provides valuable insights into the enduring relevance of Boyd's ideas. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Vladimir Putin very deliberately referred to it as a ‘special military operation', not an act of war. He's far from unique in refusing to call a war by its name; calling a conflict a war has consequences. And over the course of history, very different types of conflict have had the label applied to, or denied, them. In this, the second of three short conversations, Jack McDonald, the author of 'What is War For?', tells George Miller what's at stake in calling something a war. Fergus Bordewich on Congress at War For more information go to: WWW.CWRTChiago.org "Congress at War" tells the story of how the oft-maligned U.S. Congress helped win the Civil War a new perspective that puts the House and Senate, rather than President Lincoln, at the center of the conflict. This perspective on the Civil War overturns the popular conception that Abraham Lincoln single-handedly led the Union to victory and gives us a vivid account of the essential role Congress played in winning the war. Building a riveting narrative around four influential members of Congress Thaddeus Stevens, Pitt Fessenden, Ben Wade, and the pro-slavery Clement Vallandigham Fergus Bordewich shows us how a newly empowered Republican party shaped one of the most dynamic and consequential periods in American history. From reinventing the nation s financial system to pushing President Lincoln to emancipate the slaves to the planning for Reconstruction, Congress undertook drastic measures to defeat the Confederacy, in the process laying the foundation for a strong central government that came fully into being in the twentieth century. FERGUS M. BORDEWICH is the author of eight non-fiction books, including CONGRESS AT WAR: How Republican Reformers Fought The Civil War, Defied Lincoln, Ended Slavery, And Remade America, (Alfred A. Knopf, 2020); AMERICA'S GREAT DEBATE: Henry Clay, Stephen A. Douglas, and the Compromise that Preserved the Union (Simon & Schuster, 2012. Winner of the 2012 Los Angeles Times History Prize); and BOUND FOR CANAAN: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America (Amistad/HarperCollins, 2005). He lives in San Francisco, CA with his wife, Jean Parvin Bordewich.

Have you ever had the chance to talk with Dr Peter S Carmichael? Well, here's your chance. Matt and Bob discuss The War For The Common Soldier... with Dr Carmichael. If you think this is just another book about eating hardtack and what soldiers carried in their knapsacks, you're gravely mistaken. How did Civil War soldiers endure the brutal and unpredictable existence of army life during the conflict? This question is at the heart of Peter S. Carmichael's sweeping new study of men at war. Based on close examination of the letters and records left behind by individual soldiers from both the North and the South, Carmichael explores the totality of the Civil War experience--the marching, the fighting, the boredom, the idealism, the exhaustion, the punishments, and the frustrations of being away from families who often faced their own dire circumstances. Carmichael focuses not on what soldiers thought but rather how they thought. In doing so, he reveals how, to the shock of most men, well-established notions of duty or disobedience, morality or immorality, loyalty or disloyalty, and bravery or cowardice were blurred by war. Digging deeply into his soldiers' writing, Carmichael resists the idea that there was "a common soldier" but looks into their own words to find common threads in soldiers' experiences and ways of understanding what was happening around them. In the end, he argues that a pragmatic philosophy of soldiering emerged, guiding members of the rank and file as they struggled to live with the contradictory elements of their violent and volatile world. Soldiering in the Civil War, as Carmichael argues, was never a state of being but a process of becoming. ”The War For the Common Soldier” is published by UNC Press and can be purchased at www.addressinggettysburg.com/books

We'll get serious on some issues, we'll goof around with others, and we'll always give you our bizarre brand of back & forth. We'll record these reaction pods from time to time, after award nominations are announced and of course, after the award ceremonies themselves. But there will also be recordings (like this one), where we must comment on news that rocks the industry. The admitted and alleged sexual harrassments and abuses in Hollywood require a commentary, and we sincerely do our best to discuss it and direct any jokes we have where they belong, on ourselves. Originally planned as an intro segment to our upcoming Netflix Movie Originals Year in Review, we had much more to say about the news of the film world than we thought, and therefore we chose to dedicate an entire episode to it. First & foremost however, we MUST start with banter bordering on the ridiculous. So dreading the upcoming talk on hollywood scandal, we have a little too much fun making puns out of movie titles that either fit our theme, or even dumber, just add “Mike” to the title. Howbout this one - ‘War For the Podcast of the Mikes'… Anyone?…. Bueller? ...Bueller? In other news, we weigh in on how Jordan Peele's Get Out will be considered as a Comedy or Musical in the upcoming Golden Globes, and we told you so. Then we discuss Quentin Tarantino's new deal with Sony for his upcoming 1969/Manson Family Murders movie and chat about Sony's history with our favorite flicks that don't rhyme with -Iderman. The new Deadpool 2 trailer tickles our fancies like only Ryan Reynolds can. Wait, that didn't come out right. Or maybe it came out just right? Oh well. We then offer quick reviews of Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok, as Also Mike hopes to win the friendship of Taika Waititi one podcast at a time. We ponder whether or not we should buy the $10 per month Movie Pass (which for the record, Also Mike got in the mail after a week & a day btw, shortly after recording). We discuss the news that Martin Scorsese wants a theatrical release for his big budgeted upcoming Netflix film, The Irishman, and this segways into a broader discussion of the state of the movie industry at large, where we don't wanna brag, but we blow your minds to smithereens with our endless savvy and infallible wisdom. You're welcome. We call out Bill Simmons, Wesley Morris, and The Ringer for their recent podcast about the state of movies as a launching point, and then we tell all. Is the TV Apocalypse coming? How will newer movies make $$$? How should you view politics and the meaning of life? Find out!! On this, the 8th episode of Mike, Mike, & Oscar! As always, do chime in and contact us on social media with all your takes. We've been reading your emails, tweets, and insta-messages (or whatever you kids call them… Get off my lawn!!!). Thanks for listening. We hope you can enjoy/survive your holiday season.

Something genuinely strange has happened friends. There was once a age where summer blockbusters were a popcorn-munching escapist's paradise of awesome stories coupled with dazzling effects. But those days were long past, plots got dumber, and quality films became few and far between... Until now. Against all odds, summer 2017 has hit hard with stellar films. Films that are critically acclaimed, artfully crafted, and explosive in the effects department. In this episode we share our awe and wonderment with Spider-Man Homecoming and War For the Planet of the Apes. But that's not all. Join Cap, boR, Tony, and Brandon as we explore not only our summertime film habits, but the amazing TV we've seen too including the new Warren Ellis-penned Castlevania on Netflix, cartoons we've caught up on, and other treats from the small screen. Plus: Brandon's Apes notes he scrawled in the darkened theatre, a few good books, and the Splatoon-fueled debate of cake vs. ice cream. In the latest installment of our look at the top stories from the week in geek, guest Clarke Wolfe (Nerdist) joins us to break down the New Warriors casting announcement, some Wonder Woman rumors, and most prominently...War For the Planet of the Apes. Did Matt Reeves pull off a powerful end to his Apes trilogy? Will Andy Serkis ever get an Oscar nod? And where does the post-Simian flu cinematic universe go from here?
Nothing like an indie romantic comedy in July, amirite? Logan and Bob review The Big Sick. How does the real story it's based on translate to a movie? Will anyone remember it at year-end time? Logan mini reviews The Leftovers season 3. Bob mini reviews Spider-Man: Homecoming. In weekend picks, Logan talks about Suits and Game of Thrones. Bob mentions War For the Planet of the Apes, Wish Upon, and Lady MacBeth. Keep an eye out for the final pick. Let's rock! Follow us on Twitter: @LoganBeaux and @BobCaswell
With the impending release of Fox's much-anticipated three-quel War For the Planet of the Apes, Brian and Zaki decided this was a perfect time to revisit the misbegotten Planet of the Apes "re-imagining" from 2001 directed by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg. We discuss the project's long road to the screen, including the many notable filmmakers like Peter Jackson and James Cameron whose abortive attempts at reviving the Apes brand never made it to the screen, and also why the movie we did get is such a fascinating failure. It's not just two hours of throwing poop at the screen, and you can listen through the embed below, or at iTunes or Stitcher or Google Play. And as always, please hit “like” on our Facebook page, and send any questions or comments to MovieFilmPodcast@gmail.com.

On episode 30 of Film Focus, I talk about the next major film of 2017 and the 8th entry in the Fast and Furious series, The Fate of the Furious. Now I was never a fan of these films until around the 4th film, but Fast Five was where I fell in love with these films and since then they've only gotten more and more fun and ridiculous. So, is this another solid entry in the series? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. P.S. Here's some minor information: Trailer discussion for Spider-Man: Homecoming, IT, War For the Planet of the Apes & Star Wars: The Last Jedi: 01.41 The Fate of the Furious Review: 05.00 Also around 17.10, I meant to say Fast & Furious 8, not 7. The live-action adaptation of anime/manga classic Ghost in the Shell has had a fraught road to the screen, with a lot of controversy over the casting of Scarlett Johansson in the lead. Now, it's arrived, and the proof is in the robotic pudding. Did we enjoy it? Find out as we break down the movie, plus take a look at the idea of Joss Whedon directing Batgirl, and a bevvy of new trailers (Justice League, Spider-Man: Homecoming, It, and War For the Planet of the Apes) in the latest episode of our examination of the week in geek!
Naughty Dog is at it again, serving us that eyebrow-game-strong realness with the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy Remastered and it’s badass female-led Uncharted spin-off. We take another quick peek at the progress of our favorite ape-controlled earth with the new War For the Planet of Apes trailer. Marvel gives us the one-two punch with new trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spiderman: Homecoming #BabyGrootIsLife #BirdmanIsStillBirdman. In this week’s Netflix and Chill Realness, we get cute and crude with Ali Wong in her comedy special Baby Cobra. We finish off with Designated Survivor and we ask ourselves, “Will this show survive it’s own concept?” during Primetime Realness.
This week, Colin & James return from an extended holiday & technology-related hiatus to smash through trailers for Spider-Man, War For the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Fate of the Furious - as well as a brief Childish Gambino review, Bob Dylan not showing up to collect his Nobel Literature Prize, and various politicians' Christmas cards. Ho ho ho.
