While we gear up for Season 4 of "Top Doc", we're sharing some of our favorite episodes of the past few years.  Today, we re-present a pod from October of 2021.   Ken and Mike welcome Kirsten (KJ) Johnson, who recently won Best Director for her groundbreaking film, "Dick Johnson is Dead." This film is like no other film you'll find in your Netflix queue. KJ's boundary-pushing documentary uses the art of cinema to keep the ravages of time and the onset of dementia from taking her beloved father Dick away from her. The solution? Keep killing her father over-and-over again on camera, all with Dick's active participation and encouragement.  Once you survive the film, you'll definitely want to join Mike and Ken for this refreshingly candid conversation with KJ who constantly questions everything (including our questions!) and proves herself to be every bit as provocative, playful and engaging as the film itself. Covering everything from Seventh-day Adventism and the best way to stage your father's funeral while he's still alive to Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera and, of course, chocolate cake, this week's podcast is one you'll be dying to listen to. And look out for that falling air conditioner!  You can follow us on twitter @topdocspod Other films directed by Kirsten Johnson: Cameraperson Deadline   People who worked on the film: Judy Karp Michael Hilow Nels Bangerter Peter Horner Nadia Hallgren John Foster Simon Mendes Marilyn Ness   Hidden Gem:  Marjoe   Also mentioned in the pod: Ousmane Sembène  Djibril Diop Mambéty Wellington Bowler Young Frankenstein Monty Python's Flying Circus Charles Addams Lacan on social death  Derrida (the documentary) Quantum Entanglement The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill

We talk it over with Justin Ballard, the new newsroom meteorologist at the Houston Chronicle. What more can possibly be said about Dziga Vertov & Mikhail Kaufman's Man With a Movie Camera, one of the most studied, discussed and written-about films ever made? Is everybody sick of hearing how amazing it is? Perhaps it speaks to the film's timeless artistic energy and bold experimentation that there's always something to say about the camera techniques, radical editing and unique blending of avant-garde and documentary styles which come together using "no titles, no scenario, no actors, no sets" to create an "absolute language of cinema." To help get the best possible insight into this giant artwork, hosts Martin Kessler and John Cribbs welcome Jeremy Workman, a filmmaker who's taken inspiration from Vertov in everything from his award-winning film Lily Topples the World to his latest short documentary Deciding Vote. The timing is perfect for us to do one more film on the 2022 Sight and Sound list, Man with a Movie Camera, an experimental documentary that despite receiving mixed reviews upon its release in 1928 has come to be seen as a trailblazing and foundational piece of filmmaking in the 95 years since its arrival. Welcome to the third Fresh Air Award! Four cinephiles continue a Fourwind Films tradition of awarding a film that pushed cinema forward the most as an artform during a particular decade. To be nominated, a motion picture has to have changed movies in some way and made a lasting impression on how movies are made today. This episode delves into the decade that saw the beginning of successful commercial sound in cinema: 1920-1929. Before getting into the nominations with the panelists, our host Justin Joseph Hall goes through a quick history lesson on what was happening in the decade businesswise and technology-wise.  The four cinephiles who select the nominees in this panel are cinephiles Elizabeth Chatelain, Tracey Goessel, Justin Joseph Hall, and Kevin Hinman. If the piece has moving images and came out in the appropriate decade, it is eligible for nomination. This group chose an array of documentaries, shorts, animated films, and feature films, including films with the first synchronized score with animation, the first montage, a commercially successful duo tone color film, and the first soundtrack synched on the film strip. Nominations by each panelist: Elizabeth Chatelain nominees Battleship Potemkin (1925) Man with a Movie Camera (1929) Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) Un Chien Andalou (1929) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) Tracey Goessel nominees Nanook of the North (1922) Don Juan (1926) Steamboat Willie (1928) The Play House (1921) The Toll of the Sea (1922) Justin Joseph Hall nominees Un Chien Andalou (1929) Nosferatu (1922) Battleship Potemkin (1925) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) Man with a Movie Camera (1929) Kevin Hinman nominees Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) Drifters (1929) Un Chien Andalou (1929) Die Nibelungen: Siegfried (1924) The Gold Rush (1924) To find the 1920's Fresh Air Award winner click on this link! Vintage Sand Episode 43: Thoughts on the "Sight and Sound" 2022 Poll

Vintage Sand

It is indeed the episode a decade in the making! Here, in Episode 43, Team Vintage Sand puts in its collective two cents on the newly released Sight and Sound decennial poll of the greatest films of all time. It is a list referred to by no less an authority than Roger Ebert as “the best damned film list of them all.” But this time, was it a “woke” poll, reflecting more our need for political correctness than a genuine and deep understanding of film history, as old-timers like Paul Schrader proclaimed? Or was it about damn time that the old white men gave up at least some of the strangle hold they've had on the poll since its inception in 1952, as many younger critics proclaimed? Does this new list signify that the battle lines have been drawn irrevocably between older and younger film people? As always, the truth is never that simple. Team Vintage Sand tries to approach the poll by avoiding either extreme, oversimplified position, reaching, as ever, for the complex and embracing the gray. Does Akerman's "Jeanne Dielman" deserve its new place atop the rankings? Probably not, but it surely is a much better film than its position in the mid-30's for the 2012 edition of the poll suggested. And if the poll is so politically correct, why are there no films by the Mexican New Wavers here? Along these same lines, 16 of the 22 directors who have multiple entries on the list are white men; four of the remaining six are Asian men. Yes, there are no films by Howard Hawks or Roman Polanski. No Buñuel. No Lean. No Altman. No Demy, or Melville, or Resnais. No Sternberg or Stroheim. No Huston. No Malick. No Tarantino. No Anderson, be it Wes or P.T. No Coen Brothers. No Linklater. No Spielberg, for goodness' sake! No silent films in the Top 10, and all the silent films that are still there from 2012, with the exception of "City Lights", plummeted to the nether reaches of the list. (If anyone tells me that there are 20 films greater than "The Passion of Joan of Arc", it's ON!) And yet… …there's "Do The Right Thing" entering the list at #24. FINALLY. And there's Burnett's brilliant "Killer of Sheep". And Dash's "Daughters of the Dust". Maybe now someone will give her some money to make a second film, three full decades after she released a Top 100 masterpiece. And there, brand spanking new, are Jordan Peele and Barry Jenkins. And there's Agnes Varda's extraordinary "Cleo from 5 to 7" entering the list in the top 15. And my historical experimental film crush Maya Deren is finally here as well for her extraordinary and endlessly influential "Meshes of the Afternoon". And Claire Denis in the Top 10. And Jane Campion, Barbara Loden(!), Celine Sciamma and the aforementioned Julie Dash. If it took some “woke” (whatever that means) younger critics to put these artists in their rightful places in the pantheon, we'll take it. Ultimately, we recognize the silly waste of energy in trying to compare, say, "Jeanne Dielman" with "Tokyo Story" with "In the Mood for Love" with "Man with a Movie Camera". For us, this poll has one purpose only, and it's the same purpose that guides what we do at Vintage Sand: it opens doors. It takes us out of our comfort zone as viewers, and reminds us that there are vast aspects of film history about which we know little or nothing. So look carefully at Sight and Sound 2022 through this lens, check off the films you haven't seen yet or not in a long time anyway, and track them down. We'll bring the popcorn!

Mandy is back to help me dissect this beloved classic book "Ways of Seeing" 1972 (and BBC TV show) by John Berger. Welcome back, Mandy! And, as always on Book Talks, much art-nerdery was indulged. Come along with us as we consider Berger's thoughts on Art: aka How it was changed by the age of reproduction, How the Nude functions as a tool for the Male Gaze, and How art is used as a status symbol for the wealthy, and in advertising to create Glamour. "Ways of Seeing" was created mainly by John Berger (writer/host), Michael Dibb (filmmaker), Delia Derbyshire (composer), and Richard Hollis (book designer) with help from others. The project was conceived specifically to "question some of the assumptions usually made about the tradition of European Painting. That tradition which was born about 1400, and dies about 1900.” In the TV series (and in direct contrast to Kenneth Clark's big budget show, “Civilisation”), Berger shows up against a slightly shabby blue screen in a partially unbuttoned white and brown patterned shirt (he bought it right before the shoot bc he had been wearing blue) with kind of wild curly hair (kinda like Michael Landon style), and in slacks…he's casual- he's scrappy - parts of the show were even assembled in his parent's living room. He's earnest, feminist, anti-capitalist and unlike the posh-speaking Clark, he has a slight speech impediment…and Berger is ready to burn it all to the ground. "Ways of Seeing," the book, is available at most bookstores and "Ways of Seeing," the BBC tv program, is available to stream for free on Youtube A few grateful shout-outs to writers who we used for research for this talk: Olivia Laing / The Guardian, Kate Abbott / The Guardian and Sam Haselby / Aeon.co John Berger's other books: His novel "G" and also books about art's role in contemporary society: "About Looking" and "The Shape of a Pocket" Extra shout-outs: Composer, Delia Derbyshire, "The Man with the Movie Camera" film by Dziga Vertov, poster by Alexander Rodchenko, Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” Eva Figes, book "Patriarchal Attitudes," Jane Kenrick, one of five who had been on trial for protesting against the 1970 Miss World contest, Laura Mulvey's “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,” Linda Nochlin's “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists," "Landscape & Power" by WJT Mitchell, "Looking at the Overlooked" by Norman Bryson Send me a voice message on Speakpipe.com about what you love and dislike about NYC! Peter Whitehead was an innovative English writer and filmmaker who documented the counterculture in London and New York in the late 1960s.   His film Wholly Communion captured The International Poetry Incarnation, a groundbreaking event at The Royal Albert Hall in 1965 that was to prove pivotal in the evolution of the underground  scene. The film featured poetry readings by Beat poets including Allen Ginsberg, Michael Horovitz, Adrian Mitchell and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and established Whitehead as the London counterculture's 'Man With a Movie Camera'.   Film event producer Marek Pytel walks us through Whtehead's life and work including the iconic 'Tonite Let's All Make Love in London' documentary that helped define the "swinging London" scene of the sixties with psychedelic performances and interviewees including Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Mick Jagger, Vanessa Redgrave, Lee Marvin, Julie Christie, Allen Ginsberg, Eric Burdon, Michael Caine and many others.   We hear how Whitehead went onto film with The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix and to make provocative work about the countercultural protest movement in late 60s New York before making an extraordinary career swerve.   For More on Marek Pytel's work see www.realityfilm.co.uk   For more on the Bureau of Lost Culture www.bureauoflostculture.com
