Superman (2025): Ethics, Hope, and the Power of Choice • A Special Hiatus EpisodeMatthew and Riki welcome frequent guest Jessica Plummer to a discussion of James Gunn's take on Superman, exploring how this version challenges both the character and audiences to think differently about power, responsibility, and hope.Key Ethical Questions We ExploreShould Superman intervene in international conflicts? The hosts examine the film's most compelling scene: Lois Lane's hard-hitting interview with Superman about his decision to stop a military invasion. This sequence raises fundamental questions about sovereignty, journalism, and the responsibility that comes with ultimate power. The discussion reveals how the film sits in the tension between idealism and pragmatism, ultimately landing on Superman's simple but powerful argument: "People are dying."What makes this Superman different from previous versions? Unlike other portrayals that emphasize Superman's alien heritage as a source of wisdom, this film flips the script. Here, Krypton's message promotes authoritarian rule, making Superman's choice to embrace the values taught by Martha and Jonathan Kent entirely his own decision. This shift gives Clark Kent true agency as a hero, something the hosts argue has been missing from previous films. What role should journalism play in holding heroes accountable? Lois Lane's portrayal as an investigative journalist who challenges Superman creates a fascinating dynamic. The hosts discuss how her questions—while sometimes cynical—ultimately make Superman a better hero, and how their relationship models the importance of being challenged by those we love and respect. For fans of ethical philosophy, superhero narratives, or anyone interested in how entertainment shapes our moral imagination, this episode provides both entertainment and genuine food for thought about what it means to be good in a complicated world.Regular Episodes Return in September! **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Happy Tuesday! With a new version of Superman hitting movie theaters, I was so happy to chat with one of my favorite Men of Steel this week - you guys, it's Brandon Routh! You know Brandon from playing Clark Kent/Superman in Superman Returns. He also played Daniel Shaw on Chuck, Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Ray Palmer/The Atom across the Berlanti Arrow Universe. We talk about this in the interview, but I feel like Brandon's version of Superman maybe didn't get the appreciation it deserved at the time. It was interesting to talk with him about living up to the legacy of Christopher Reeve and how it feels to watch David Corenswet wear the blue cape. We also discuss how Brandon was able to find closure by playing Superman again in the 2019 Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” I really enjoyed this conversation and Brandon is such a lovely, grounded guy. I can't wait to see him in his new film Ick, directed by one of my favorite directors Joseph Kahn (who also directed me in the short Power/Rangers). Be sure to stick around after the interview for the hindsight, straight from a hotel in Vancouver. In this episode of America on the Road, host Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague discuss the latest automotive news, including new tax breaks for car buyers, challenges faced by important global automakers, and exciting new vehicle releases from GMC and Mercedes-Benz. They also provide in-depth reviews of the 2025 Kia K4 sedan and the 2025 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance, highlighting their features and performance. In this week's road test segment, host Jack Nerad discovers the 2025 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance to be a breath of fresh air in today's highly homogenized and shrinking sedan market. With a 472-horsepower naturally aspirated V8 under its hood, this unassumingly styled rear-wheel-drive sedan blends old-school performance with modern tech and refinement. Aggressively tuned for back-road thrills yet wrapped in a sleek, understated four-door package, the IS 500 offers a visceral experience, enhanced by high-end features like heated/ventilated sport seats, a Mark Levinson sound system, and a refined tech suite. And you'll never guess the cars Jack Nerad compares it to. Also in the spotlight this week is Chris Teague's test of the all-new 2025 Kia K4, a compact sedan aiming to shake up the segment with bold styling and surprising tech. Replacing the outgoing and under-rated Forte, the K4 pulls into the lot with a surprisingly upscale interior, available turbocharged power, and Kia's latest infotainment platform. Chris dives into how it drives, how it stacks up against rivals like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, and whether Kia has another budget-friendly hit on its hands. This episode's special guest is Anthony Monaco, marketing lead for Ram heavy-duty trucks. Monaco joins the show to discuss exciting and affordable new product updates from Ram, shedding light on where the brand is heading and what consumers can expect from the latest heavy-duty lineup. In the news, a sweeping new federal tax deduction could shake up the auto financing world. Under the “Big, Beautiful Bill” signed by President Trump, qualifying buyers can now deduct up to $10,000 in interest on loans for U.S.-assembled vehicles. The catch? Income caps apply, leases are excluded, and not every car will qualify. The IRS will release a list of eligible models, and VIN documentation will be required. Is it a good idea? We'll have details. Meanwhile, three major global automakers—Stellantis, Porsche, and Jaguar Land Rover—are navigating rocky terrain. Stellantis reported a staggering $2.7 billion loss, tied to new tariffs and slumping sales, while Porsche is slashing costs amid weakening EV demand. JLR, reeling from a 15% sales dip and delayed EV rollouts, is trimming jobs and recalibrating its strategy. Two big product debuts also made headlines. GMC launched the 2026 Acadia Denali Ultimate, pushing deeper into luxury with full-leather interiors, Super Cruise hands-free driving, and a 16-speaker Bose system. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz revealed its next-gen CLA, available first in battery-electric and then hybrid form. The EV variant boasts nearly 500 miles of range and impresively fast charging, while the hybrids promise efficiency and flexibility for mainstream buyers. This episode also highlights the America on the Road Made in America Tour, which showcases vehicles and other products built in the U.S., tying in with new buyer incentives and celebrating American ingenuity and homegrown manufacturing. We close the show with a listener question from Mitchell in Boulder, Colorado, who says, “I want to buy a new car, but I need some help in making the deal. How much should I negotiate off the MSRP on a new car?” Jack and Chris share advice on negotiation strategy, dealer incentives, and the current state of new car pricing. Check Out Matt's Book: Pick up a copy of co-host Matt DeLorenzo's terrific new book How to Buy an Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership.

James Gunn's Superman (2025) is in cinemas right now, and is really good! It has a wonderful central performance by David Corenswet, and is as colourful as it is hopeful, and we need that right now. As I'm off this week, it felt like a good time to revisit the late Christopher Reeve's iconic performance in Superman (1978).Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Verbal Diorama's Heroes Through the Decades miniseries, continuing into the 1970s!Whether you know him as Clark Kent, Kal-El, the Man of Steel, the Man of Tomorrow, or just as Superman, that famous tights-and-cape combo emblazoned with the S on his chest is a symbol of a lot of things:Hope, courage, freedom, love... truth, justice and the American way, and a movie with a rich history in comic books, that was made in part because of Zorro, and in another due to 1966's Batman. The late Christopher Reeve is perfectly cast as both Clark Kent and Superman, in a landmark superhero film by the late Richard Donner. Donner's personality clashes with father-and-son producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind led to him being fired from Superman II, despite him completing reportedly 75% of the sequel....This episode was originally released on 5th May 2022Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. James Gunn is one of the most prolific and successful screenwriters and directors out there. After bringing the Marvel films, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, to the big screen, he was hired as the head of DC films to set up and bring to life the world of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. After successful products like THE SUICIDE SQUAD (2021) and PEACEMAKER (2022), he's back with the true kickoff to the DC Universe with SUPERMAN (2025).From IMDB: “Superman must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way he soon finds himself in a world that views these as old-fashioned.”The new Superman film stars David Corenswet as the lead with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The aggregate website Rottentomatoes has given it great reviews from both audiences and reviewers alike. Your co-hosts take a look at this big budget beginning to the DC Universe and give their thoughts.
Send us a textChristopher Reeve soars into cinema history in 1978's "Superman," a groundbreaking film that established the superhero blockbuster format we know today. Before Marvel, before Batman's dark reinvention, this was the movie that convinced audiences a man could truly fly. What makes this film so captivating decades later isn't just its place in history, but how it fearlessly embraces both cosmic scale and intimate humanity. From the crystalline landscapes of Krypton to the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet, the film takes viewers on a journey that feels both alien and deeply familiar. Reeve's performance remains the gold standard for superhero portrayals - his ability to transform between the regal Man of Steel and the bumbling Clark Kent with nothing more than posture, voice, and confidence is a masterclass in acting that later Superman actors still measure themselves against. The film's vintage charm extends to its supporting cast and villainous plot. Margot Kidder's Lois Lane balances professional ambition with romantic vulnerability, while Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor occupies an underground lair beneath Grand Central Station that ranks among cinema's most memorable villain headquarters. The special effects, revolutionary for their time, might seem quaint today but still evoke wonder in their creativity and ambition. When Superman reverses Earth's rotation to turn back time - a moment of pure comic book logic - the film confidently embraces its fantastical nature rather than apologizing for it.Superman (1978) wasn't constrained by established superhero formulas because it was creating them. This freedom allowed for creative choices that modern superhero films might shy away from, yet they contribute to the film's enduring charm. Want to understand why superhero films dominate today's box office? Look no further than this pioneering classic that made us all believe a man could fly. Watch (or rewatch) it today and experience the birth of a genre that would eventually reshape cinema itself.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show
Host Anthony Desiato and guest Martin Gray (Too Dangerous... Review Blog) make good on a longtime podcast promise and deliver justice at last for Pete Ross — the oft-neglected (at best) childhood best friend of one Clark Kent. Since his Silver Age debut, Pete has served many roles: noble, silent protector of Clark's secret; off-panel victim of Toyman & Prankster; husband to Lana & father to Clark Peter Ross; Vice President of the United States alongside Lex Luthor; and more. With few exceptions, Pete's value as a character has rarely been met by the stories that feature him, and the time has come to speak up for Pete and the place he deserves to occupy in the Superman mythology.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies. In Episode 292, we suit up and fly headfirst into James Gunn's bold new take on Superman. With a new Clark Kent, a stacked ensemble cast, and a shifting DCEU landscape, there's plenty to dissect—and even more to speculate on. Bob, and Rob explore: How David Corenswet stacks up in the cape The Superman vs. The Authority tone shift Can Gunn really balance heart, heroism, and humor—or are we just getting Guardians in a cape? The risks of reboot fatigue in a world still haunted by the Snyderverse Whether this film is truly hopeful… or just another IP puzzle piece Plus, we get into the visual tone, the costume decisions, and whether the DCEU can actually be saved (or if we should all just go back to rewatching Man of Steel). Is Gunn's Superman going to soar—or crash under the weight of expectations?
Are you ready to believe a man can fly again? Join us as we soar into the world of James Gunn's highly anticipated "Superman" (2025)! This isn't your average origin story – Clark Kent is already the Man of Steel, navigating a world where metahumans are public knowledge and his heroism isn't without its complexities.
In this special episode of Fan Effect, ripped from the streams of our friend Rachel Wagner at the Hallmarkies Podcast, producer KellieAnn Halvorsen discusses the latest “Superman” movie, and in particular, the lasting love of Lois Lane and Clark Kent. Darin Lundberg of the NostalgiaCast Podcast joins Rachel and KellieAnn for a masculine perspective on the beloved pair. Not only do they dive into a (spoiler-filled) review of the 2025/James Gunn’s version of the Man of Steel, but they look deeply into the 1978 “Superman: The Movie,” which provides a great foundational gateway for learning about The Man from Krypton. Steffan and Gavia discuss the first good Superman movie since the Christopher Reeve era, a charming action-comedy from 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn. Leaning into zany comicbook lore and the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, this reboot makes some vague attempts at political commentary - but is mostly about resetting Hollywood's vision of Superman as a lovable American icon.

Send us a textWhat defines a hero? Not the powers they possess, but the choices they make when facing impossible situations. Superman 2025 stands as a testament to this fundamental truth, reintroducing audiences to a Man of Steel whose greatest strength isn't his ability to fly or lift mountains, but his unwavering compassion and moral clarity. While exploring James Gunn's fresh vision for Superman, we dive deep into what makes this interpretation both faithful to Superman's 85-year legacy and boldly innovative. David Corenswet breathes new life into both Clark Kent and Superman, crafting distinct personalities that somehow feel like two sides of the same genuine heart. His Kansas farm boy humility shines through even when he's soaring above Metropolis, creating a Superman whose power is matched only by his humanity.Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane emerges as the perfect counterpart - fierce, brilliant, and unwavering in her commitment to truth. Their chemistry crackles with authenticity, particularly during that electrifying interview scene where professional integrity clashes with personal connection. We dissect how this relationship anchors the film, giving Superman something worth protecting beyond abstract ideals. The film's most controversial element - the revelation about Superman's original purpose on Earth - transforms from potential stumbling block to profound statement about nurture versus nature. Superman isn't good because he was sent to Earth to be a savior; he's good because Jonathan and Martha Kent raised him with values that transcend his alien origins. His heroism becomes more meaningful precisely because it's a choice, not a destiny. From Nicholas Hoult's calculating Lex Luthor to Nathan Fillion's hilariously accurate Guy Gardner, we celebrate how the supporting cast enriches this world without overshadowing its protagonist. And of course, we couldn't resist gushing over Krypto the Superdog, whose presence captures the perfect balance of comic book whimsy and emotional resonance that defines this film.Whether you're a lifelong Superman fan or newcomer to the character, join us as we examine why Superman 2025 succeeds by understanding that what makes Superman super has never been the "powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men," but rather his fundamentally human heart. After all, anyone can save the world - but it takes someone special to care about saving one scared, not-very-good dog.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

Smallville did a hell of a job reinstablishing the origins of Clark Kent/Superman as well building it's own law that's become canon across other DC Universes including Superman in the DCU. Here we look at the pilot episode, a Christopher Reeve cameo episode plus the two hour series finale that wrapped up it's incredible 10 season run. Plus we get into the freak of the week trope, the lack of an actual Superman costume or apperance, it's continuation in the CW with Crisis on Infinate Earths, Season 11 and the potential upcoming animated series.
