Episode Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: The Rochester Connection & The Johnny Fever Dream (00:00 – 03:51) Anne introduces her longtime friend Tim Powers. They bond over their shared Rochester, NY, background, noting that growing up there fosters a natural sense of grit, humor, and raw honesty. Tim shares his origin story, starting as a kid with a voice that dropped way too early in 1978. Growing up in a massive, hilarious family where you had to be funny just to get noticed, Tim fell in love with radio icons and comedy legends, dreaming of becoming the next Johnny Fever. Chapter 2: The "Clark Kent" Years & Transition to the Improv Stage (03:52 – 08:34) Tim discusses his early years in radio, cueing up vinyl records, learning to think on his feet, and mastering spontaneous communication. However, minimum-wage radio couldn't pay the bills, leading to decades of "Clark Kent" day jobs. In his 30s, a friend dragged him to an improv theater tryout. Despite not being a traditional theater kid, Tim discovered that the improv stage was exactly where he learned structural acting, performance pacing, and the ultimate art of letting go. Chapter 3: The Philosophy of "Yes, And" in Voiceover (08:35 – 12:40) Tim shares his journey moving from his hometown to Los Angeles, training with iconic schools like The Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade, and eventually transitioning back behind the microphone under the mentorship of the late Lori Tritel and animation legend Michael Bell. Anne and Tim unpack the zen philosophy of "Yes, And." They discuss how voice actors spin too many mental plates trying to be perfect, when their only job is to accept the information given to them by the copy and boldly add their own life experiences to it. Chapter 4: Making Bold Choices vs. The Robotic Read (12:41 – 19:28) Anne and Tim challenge the idea of trying to read the casting director's mind. Tim points out that in an industry overflowing with talented talent, the only thing that separates you from a room full of people matching your exact technical specifications is your unique life experience. They look at how improv empowers talent to trust their gut and make fast, definitive character choices rather than hunting for a safe, sterile melody. Chapter 5: The "Dude" Knowledge & Grounding Corporate Narration (19:29 – 23:48) The conversation gets tactical as Anne and Tim explain the power of improvising your lead-ins. Tim demonstrates how a simple lead-in word like "dude" acts as the tip of a massive, subtextual iceberg. They argue that this work isn't just for wacky characters or high-energy commercials; it is also mandatory for all genres, including corporate narration and e-learning. To compete with cheap, perfect AI bots, human actors must bring a developed backstory, a natural breathing arc, and authentic physical transitions to the text. Chapter 6: The Truth About Demo Production & Acting Accountability (23:49 – 33:32) Anne and Tim have a candid, hard conversation about the current state of industry coaching. They address the hard truth that voiceover is a professional acting discipline that cannot be mastered in four to eight short weeks. They discuss their shared responsibility as demo producers, explaining why they refuse to cash a student's check for a demo if that student isn't consistently audition-ready. Tim shares a classic Hollywood story about the legendary "$500 demo trucks" parked outside major studios and warns why decision-makers spot those corner-cutting shortcuts instantly. Chapter 7: Garbage Plates, White Hots, and the Drop-In (33:33 – End) Tim details how talent can train with him via his zero-barrier-to-entry weekly drop-in Zoom workshop, Timprov, and his regular coaching site. The episode wraps up with a hilarious trip down memory lane as Anne and Tim talk classic Rochester culinary staples—including the legendary "garbage plate" hangover cure, Wegmans grocery stores, and Zweigel's white hots—before locking in plans for a future collaborative live-streaming workshop episode. Top 10 Boss Takeaways Acting is reacting: Real conversations are never premeditated. Every single script you read requires you to look at the words as an immediate response to an event that just happened. Embrace the "Yes, And" mindset: Stop fighting the copy or over-analyzing the client's intent. Accept the scenario given to you by the writer, agree with it wholeheartedly, and add your specific central nervous system to it. Natural beats perfect: If voiceover were solely about flawless technical precision, one person would hold all the work. Auditions book because of raw human imperfection and compelling storytelling. Instinct over mechanics: If you are listening to the sound of your own voice or focusing on your vocal melody while recording, you are completely out of the scene. Ditch the "Voiceover Artist" label: Tim reminds us that artists make sandwiches at Subway. You are an actor who uses your voice. Own that title, and do the internal script analysis required of real actors. Master the customized lead-in: Never launch directly into the first line of text dry. Build a fully formed, improvised phrase right before the first word to establish a genuine emotional point of view. Develop the "Dude Knowledge": A single lead-in word can serve as shorthand for a massive, unwritten backstory. Is your subtext "Dude, you're about to get fired" or "Dude, I've got the coolest secret to tell you"? Know the difference before you pull context into the microphone. AI can read—humans must connect: Perfect, pretty, and cheap reads can be generated by algorithms all day long. The only defense against automation is your messy, un-replicable life experience. Demos are a reflection of audition readiness: A professional demo is designed to show a casting director what you can deliver on the fly. If you aren't ready to book an elite audition on your own, you are not ready to cut a demo. Find coaches who hold you accountable: Avoid any production factories that promise stardom in record time. Work with industry thought leaders who aren't afraid to give you the hard, necessary truths about your current performance level.

Andy Walsh and Kevin Schaefer dive into the fascinating world of unmade superhero films, specifically focusing on Kevin Smith's screenplay for "Superman Lives." This legendary script, which never made it to the big screen, is a treasure trove of comic book references and unique storytelling that reflects the quirky style of Smith. The duo discusses the plot, featuring Brainiac's quest for Kryptonian technology and Superman's epic showdown with Doomsday, all while exploring the themes of identity and sacrifice. They reminisce about the cultural impact of the "Death of Superman" narrative and how it resonates in today's superhero landscape. Plus, every dime from this episode goes to support local libraries, proving that all reading counts, whether it's a screenplay, comic, or classic novel. So, grab your cape and get ready to explore a piece of cinema history that could have been! The latest episode of Systematic Geekology dives headfirst into the wild world of unmade superhero films, specifically focusing on Kevin Smith's screenplay for Superman Lives—a project that tantalizingly danced on the edge of production before disappearing into the realm of ‘what could have been'. Andy Walsh and Kevin Schaefer kick things off with a cheeky banter about the geek culture that surrounds them, setting the tone for a laid-back yet insightful discussion. They explore the colorful history of Superman Lives, a film that was supposed to bring Nicolas Cage into the tights of the Man of Steel, and how it was influenced by comic book storylines like the Death of Superman. Through a witty exchange, they highlight the screenplay's unique elements, including Brainiac's quest for power and the inclusion of various characters like Doomsday and Lex Luthor, all while emphasizing the creativity that Smith brought to the table amidst the chaotic demands of studio executives. As they delve deeper into the screenplay, Andy and Kevin dissect the narrative structure, acknowledging its classic three-act setup while playfully critiquing its more outlandish elements, such as the infamous giant spider—a request from producer Jon Peters that has become a meme in itself. They share their thoughts on how the script blends humor with superheroics, portraying Superman as a character who grapples with both his heroic responsibilities and personal relationships, particularly with Lois Lane. With a sprinkle of nostalgia, Andy reflects on the script's potential to resonate with audiences, had it been realized in the 90s, and the profound impact it might have had on the superhero genre. The duo wraps up with their personal reflections on the legacy of Superman Lives and its lasting influence on comic book adaptations, while promoting the importance of reading in all its forms, aligning perfectly with their mission of supporting public libraries through the episode's proceeds.Takeaways:In this episode of Systematic Geekology, Andy and Kevin dive deep into the screenplay for Superman Lives, exploring the wild, untamed ideas that never made it to the big screen. The discussion highlights how Kevin Smith's script embodied a unique blend of comic book lore, humor, and heartfelt character moments, particularly between Clark Kent and Lois Lane.Superman Lives serves as a fascinating case study of a film that almost was, illustrating the challenges and creative decisions that define Hollywood's tumultuous relationship with superhero adaptations.Listeners can appreciate how the episode ties back to the podcast's mission—promoting literacy and the importance of reading in all forms, including screenplays and comics. The conversation touches on the significant cultural impact of the Death of Superman storyline and how its treatment in Smith's script reflects the era's comic book landscape. With proceeds from the episode supporting public libraries, the hosts remind us that engaging with literature in all its forms is vital for community enrichment and personal growth..Be sure to check out our merch, find extra content, and become an official member of Systematic Geekology on our website:https://systematic-geekology-shop.fourthwall.com/.Check out all of our "All Reading Counts" series:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/3706021e-22e5-4598-ae1d-732ec8e275a9.Listen to all of our DCU / DCAU episodes:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/8c9da262-e657-44a7-b14a-9649933f5347.Check out other episodes with Kevin:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/84fd7d06-cf1f-48e5-b358-09a01c5a6bc9.Listen to all of Andy's episodes:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/c86f7a67-357b-4324-bf95-e42cedb9932aMentioned in this episode:Subscribe to our show on YouTubeYou can get the video version of the show and lots of extra exclusives on our YouTube channel!YouTubeThe Anazao Podcast NetworkBe sure to check out the network website to see other podcasts trying to engage honestly with Scripture, Theology, Pop Culture, Martial Arts, Science, and more!Anazao Podcast NetworkDonate to our Show / Check Out Free ExtrasCheck out our show on Fourthwall to donate to the podcast or get free extra content!SG on FourthwallFollow us on Instagram and BlueSky to keep up to date!Follow our show on our socials to keep up to date and get some exclusive content and fun memes!Systematic GeekologyOur show focuses around our favorite fandoms that we discuss from a Christian perspective. Most people know Superman as the heroic figure from Krypton, the mild-mannered Clark Kent who fights for truth, justice, and the American way. But as William Bernhardt reveals in The Superman Wars, the story behind Superman's creation is far more complicated, emotional, and dramatic than many fans realize. In this conversation, William Bernhardt joins Books That Make You to discuss the decades-long fight of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, whose work helped launch the superhero genre and reshape American pop culture. Drawing from legal documents, personal letters, unpublished manuscripts, and interviews with people who had never spoken publicly before, Bernhardt uncovers a story of creativity, commerce, betrayal, persistence, and long-delayed recognition. The Superman Wars explores how Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created one of the most recognizable characters in the world, only to spend much of their lives fighting for credit, dignity, and justice. Bernhardt also discusses the larger impact this story had on comic book history, creator rights, and the way artists are treated when their work becomes valuable to powerful companies. This episode is for comic book fans, writers, creators, pop culture historians, and anyone interested in the real human story behind an American icon.
Steph and Kara review this iconic millennial take on Superman's origin story. First, a meteor shower in Smallville, Kansas, alters the lives of this small town's residents forever. Lana Lang loses her parents. Lex Luthor loses his hair. And Jonathan and Martha Kent adopt a boy who really isn't from around here. Years later, that boy has grown up to become Tom Welling, and it's time for the world to meet his abs. Then, Lana Lang is That Girl. She has a drawer full of awards to prove it. Unfortunately, this also means she's prone to being kidnapped, and when bug guy Greg sets his sights on her, she needs somebody to saaaaaaave her, and Clark thinks he might be The One. (Minor spoilers for the series.) Hear us discuss… What this show owes to Buffy How this show made the CW Lex Luthor and Clark Kent as frenemies Kristin Kreuk as a biracial icon The hottest men in Smallville, ranked by Steph Trigger warnings Car crashes, electrocution, insects
Six years ago this week, on May 7, 2020, we released our first Teamcast on Residue. In that episode, Preston shared a conversation with Coleman Ruiz on the psychological and emotional substance left behind after choosing the hard path. The episode, and the paper that grew out of it, traveled further than we expected. Eight operators have since told us that paper is the reason they are still here.In 2018, at a Wounded Warriors event in Alexandria, Tom Hardy introduced the idea of Residue to Preston. Preston then turned to FDNY Chief David Morkal, who pointed him toward Denis Leary. Denis's response became an essential part of MCTI's paper.Six years later, this is the first time Preston and Denis have actually talked in person. They get into what method actors and mission critical operators share, the difference between trauma and burden, dark humor as survival, the Clark Kent–at-the-barbecue problem, and why music does the work that nothing else quite does, as evidenced by Denis singing in the car on the way to the recording. Denis's response to our Monday morning question is in there, too.If this conversation is useful, the best way to support our work is to subscribe and leave a quick rating or review. It helps us reach the people who need to hear it most.

In this episode I spoke with William Bernhart about his latest book "The Superman Wars: A Battle For Truth, Justice, and An American Icon". Almost everyone knows about the man from Krypton who, disguised as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent working with the fearless Lois Lane, fights for the vulnerable and the oppressed. But few know the truth about this indelible character's creation.

What if Clark Kent didn't follow "Truth, justice & the American way" and instead said "Take the World"? Well that is the question that is fully and satisfyingly answered in this all Gunn affair from 2019. With James Gunn as a producer, his brother as a director and cousin as a writer this really is Avengers level collaboration. The film follows the same premise as the Superman origin story. A couple who can't have children find a child in a crashed spaceship and raise them as their own. only this time he is bad. Really, REALLY bad. True nightmare fuel in some scenes coupled with full action sequences in others, this is an underrated gem that deserves all the love we shower it with. Also features "Cover notes" but only from us as for the first time in a long time interactive features were placed on hold as you failed to agree on the movie. There is also a cool super hero guessing game that surprisingly Marc is actually good at (ish)Anyway if you love superhero movies or horror or both this is an episode not to miss out on.

This week on Big Trouble Little Podcast, the crew dives into Superman (1978), the film that helped define the modern superhero movie. Starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, and Marlon Brando, this classic comic book adaptation set the standard for superhero films for decades. We break down why Christopher Reeve is still considered the definitive Superman, discuss the differences between Clark Kent and Superman as characters, and debate whether Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor works as the villain in this version of the story. The conversation also explores the film's campy tone, John Williams' legendary score, and that infamous time-reversal ending that still divides fans today. Is Superman (1978) still the best Superman movie, or have newer films like Man of Steel and modern comic book adaptations surpassed it?In the post-credit segment, we talk about what we've been watching and playing lately, including Superman (2025), Weapons, Resident Evil 9, Formula 1 Australia, Gundam, and more.Next week we wrap up Cape Shit Month with the ultimate 90s comic book movie: Spawn (1997).If you enjoy movie discussions, superhero movies, gaming talk, and pop culture podcasts, make sure to follow the show and join us every week on Big Trouble Little Podcast.

Why do women fall for superheroes but turn away from the man behind the glasses? In this episode of Inlightened Ediot, we strip down the myth of “the nice guy” through a lens of pop culture and psychology. Lois Lane never wanted Clark—she wanted Superman. Mary Jane didn't dream of Peter Parker—she craved Spider-Man. And Harley Quinn… she wanted the Joker exactly as he was, chaos and all. So what does that say about attraction? Are women drawn to danger more than devotion? Is authenticity losing to the illusion of power and mystery? This conversation shatters clichés about modern dating, masculinity, and what it really means to be desirable today. Forget the capes, the chaos, and the "corny nice guy" trope—this episode flips every love story you thought you understood and asks: when it comes to romance, are we in love with people, or the personas they perform?
Having discovered Superman's secret letter in the back of a taxicab, a couple of Metropolis pickpockets debate its authenticity. Meanwhile, desperately searching for the lost letter, Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen are joined by an unlikely but enthusiastic ally! Plus, in today's Important Message, when we say new and improved, we mean it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Two Golden Door winners walk into the studio: one has 11 summers with zero bagels, the other was on track to be a Delta pilot until a color-blindness test blew up his dream. Both went on to stack Golden Doors, build real estate portfolios, and prove that identity + mindset beat raw talent every time.In this Golden Door Podcast episode, Sam sits down with Jake West (5× Golden Door) and McKenzie Golding (2× Golden Door) from Aptive to unpack what actually changes when you go from 250K rev to 700K+ and 1,000+ accounts. You'll hear:- How Jake went from “250 is elite” to 1,000+ account summers- Why McKenzie quit door-to-door, took a 9–5, then came back and nearly tripled his best year - The Clark Kent vs Superman mental framework (who's holding the mic in your head?) - What to do after bageling your first three days so you never bagel again - The “Dr Pepper 23 flavors” of a Golden Door summer (mindset, work ethic, time, skills) - Exactly how they handle slumps, self-doubt, and bad days on the doors - Why filming your pitch and fixing tiny details (like eye contact) can 5× your results - How they use door-to-door to buy real estate and buy back their time If you're stuck at 150–300 accounts or 200–300K in revenue and Golden Door feels “unreasonable,” this conversation gives you the identity, frameworks, and habits that make big numbers inevitable.
