This isn't our first podcast about beer and it probably won't be the last. The reason for the topic repetition is simple: Milwaukee brewing is continuing to grow, change, evolve, and improve. Recently, Milwaukee's reputation as "Brew City" has been bolstered with a steady string of new breweries, taproom expansions and relocations, limited bottle releases, increased acceptance from local consumers and area businesses alike, interesting collaborations, and unique events happening all around town. There's still work to be done and lots of room to grow, but Brew City is on the rise once again. It's impossible to keep tabs on everything happening in and around the realm of Milwaukee brewing, but Kathy Flanigan does one hell of a job trying to keep up. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter and author of Beer Lover's Wisconsin has been on the front lines of the city's (and state's) recent brewery boom and has spent years on the beer beat. She took time away from the newsroom—and the taproom—to meet host Tyler Maas at Company Brewing. They shared a few pints and some thoughts on the burgeoning beer scene in Milwaukee. Together, they talked about the rapid growth, the so-called "brewery bubble" that may or may not be on the verge of bursting, newcomers like Component and Vennture, how Milwaukee's breweries stack up against others in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest, and some things happening during the upcoming Drink Brew City Week (July 26 to August 5). In this episode of Brandstorm, we welcome Andy Silverman, one of the co-founders of Milwaukee Day. Andy discusses how a joke amongst friends has exploded into a mammoth annual celebration of hometown pride through fun and service. Milwaukee DayThe date of April 14th (or 4/14), is perfect for recognizing Milwaukee, home to the 414- area code. Andy’s brother Toby originally voiced the correlation between the date and the area code about 8 or 9 years ago on social media, leading Andy and some of his friends to purchase an official Milwaukee Day URL that very day and begin dreaming up the idea. A year later, commemorating the next April 14th, Andy starred in a short video, unofficially declaring the holiday. It went viral soon after, thanks to Milwaukee television anchor Ted Perry, who broadcasted the video on the FOX 6 evening news. Since then, the annual event has snowballed into a large goodwill effort to explore and experience Milwaukee’s vast history, raise funds or awareness for local charities, take in live, local music, and to do whatever one deems appropriate in celebration of the city. Andy says the Milwaukee Day movement comes from a sincere love for his hometown and embracing everything that makes Milwaukee unique. Assistance From Local BusinessesFor several years, the Milwaukee Day organizers have received sponsorships from local businesses to keep ticket prices low for those attending. Andy says his team is lucky to not only be working with these companies, but that the same organizations are often the first to reach out to them. As more companies have come on board and created their own events, it has lessened the load for the Milwaukee Day team, making the day more about inspiration and less about execution. Sisters Victoriah “Vic” Banuelos and Hannah Gabriela “Gabby” Banuelos performed live as Reyna at 88.9's Studio Milwaukee on April 7 as a preview for their evening concert with Siren at Company Brewing.
Host Tyler Maas went to the home of prolific local saxophonist Jay Anderson of Foreign Goods and, like, 500 other bands, who (with some help from Milwaukee pianist Anthony Deutsch) got Maas up to speed on jazz's origin, the state of jazz in Milwaukee in years past, where it sits today, and where he thinks it's headed. Anderson also talked about his upcoming Strange Fruit shows, which will take place at The Hotel Foster, Company Brewing, and Cactus Club next weekend.
“WORK is a trio from Milwaukee. Guitar, bass and drums. Songs about love, debt, murder in small towns, whiffle ball injuries, and drinking too much. Sometimes fast pressured and punk.
