Eric and I agree: Tersh Blissett would win the best-dressed in HVAC award if there was one. But beyond his dashing apparel, Tersh is a person of many talents. As a visionary creator of the Service Business Mastery podcast (now with co-host Josh Crouch), he is a font of wisdom and inspiration that has been flowing since 2017 when he became part of Bryan Orr's Blue Collar Roots Network with me (and this podcast) and others. While the Blue Collar Roots Network is now defunct, the spirit still lives on. Tersh has a great entrepreneurial mind, building multiple profitable home service businesses that thrive in the small-town market of Savannah, GA. He is a constant learner, in both the technical and businesses aspects of his work, but more than that he is a great communicator of what he learns as he keeps a crazy schedule between his business, his podcast, his community work and most importantly his family. He truly puts people over profits and teaches everyone from his office staff to his technicians to do the same. Period,” says Zac Garside [05:51-05:48] Garside shares six KPIs to start tracking if you have no call center metrics “I'm in favor of simplicity. If you aren't tracking anything, you only need to track six things for your call center… the number of calls taken and made, the number of appointments booked, the booking percentage, the number of maintenance plans sold on the phone, average talk time, and average time before answer,” says Zac Garside [16:11-16:40] How to Accommodate Your Customers and Keep Them Happy When Demand is High “This is about a lot more than just booking more calls and getting the team aligned around a script. This is about customer service being a central guiding philosophy of the business.” — Zac Garside “What are the odds that, if you let that customer hang up because you couldn't get there soon enough or you're booked out solid, what are the odds that they're going to call the next person in line and magically get exactly what they're looking for? Very slim,” advises Zac. [29:05-35:06] Zac Garside recently joined Service Business Mastery Podcast, and here are some highlights of the podcast: Zac discusses how contractors and service businesses benefit from customer service coaching. This podcast will help YOU improve your wellness, take charge of your lives, and become more successful in business. So, listen to this podcast to learn how to get desired results, know which habits produce success, and stick with them for a lifetime. We may be busy all day, but we may not always be productive, right? So, it's important to prioritize tasks without becoming sidetracked by less important tasks to complete them swiftly. [00:11:00] “There's a chart called The Four Quadrants by Stephen Covey. The Eisenhower Box is another name for it. And that's where you have these quadrants of what's urgent and important, and you're breaking it down and trying to get away from the less urgent and move on to the things that are essential but not urgent. So, when you're looking at that, there's an adage that says, "If you can do it in two minutes, do it now." That was something I used to believe as well,” says Blaine Oelkers. It makes a huge difference not to let other people decide how you schedule your time. That was a game-changer for Blaine a few years ago. [00:15:00] “One of the most beneficial things you can do is to get to know yourself and then schedule time with yourself. And don't allow anyone to get in the way of it.” Keep a check on your daily practices. “If you check your emails first thing in the morning, you will become irritated and damaged in the long run.” [00:24:00] “My favorite way to start the day is to take a mental shower in the morning. The majority of people shower every day, but the first thing I like to do after waking up is Meditate- to clear my mind. Sure, I enjoy a ten-minute shower, but guess what, I'll do it even if I only have one minute or three,” says Blaine Oelkers. Do you have a favorite meditation app for a mind-clearing session? (Recommendations) [00:25:00] “I think these are the top three apps for mindfulness: Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer (which is a free one, and then there are the premium versions),” says Blaine Oelkers. “The mind shower has several benefits There are certain physical benefits, such as feeling calmer, less agitated, and like you've reset yourself, your blood pressure normalizes, so it offers numerous health benefits,” he further adds. [00:29:00] “At the end of a mind shower, I begin to wonder, "OK, what's most important this day" As a result, I choose a word each year. This year my word is Vital, so when I get up in the morning, I look at my schedule and ask myself, "What's vital today" If I only accomplished one thing today, I would consider that a successful day,” Blaine Oelkers. So, what are you waiting for? Tune in to LEARN LIFE-CHANGING STRATEGIES LIKE: The 30 Minute HourTM – Get an hour's worth of stuff done in just 30 minutes. The trucking industry is facing a hiring crisis–there's no way around it. The driver shortage is making national news and calling for new federal initiatives. But, guess what? We're not the only industry facing tough times with hiring and retention right now. The service industry as a whole is right there with us. That's why on this episode, Zac is joined by Tersh Blissett and Josh Crouch–hosts of the Service Business Mastery podcast, which helps home service industry business owners and managers succeed in business. Josh, Tersh, and Zac chat about their perspectives coming from different blue collar industries, how service-based companies can start to focus on hiring well (instead of just getting “butts in seats”), and how to retain employees with benefits that matter to them. To listen to the Service Business Mastery podcast, click here. Compelling Quotes: [7:17] So getting into the people business, really understanding what people need Is not necessarily what the general population has done for 30 years, just because that's the way we've done it. Taking a step back and looking at–this is what people need today. [10:16] You're pushed towards, ‘let's go to college and have a professional degree'. And then the individuals who aren't, then they assume ‘okay, well, you can't do this, so let's do this (service-based job)'. And that's not the case. I mean, in reality, there are some people who are very, very intelligent that are in the trades. [17:54] Hiring is marketing and marketing is hiring. Always be marketing towards the hiring. [24:14] If you don't have the right management structure in place and the managers don't care about their employees, they're just a number. [29:19] It's not all about profits. It has to be people first. And if it's not people. I said, these other things are going to come and it's going to wipe it all out. And you're not going to have the same business model you do now.

Do you want actionable tips to properly navigate through every business challenge you encounter along the way? Then this podcast is definitely for you. In this episode, Gus Vassilopoulos and Rich Jurek talk about what we should know about extended service agreements and the things we don't know that could hurt us. So, if you're looking for a way to deal with the challenges of running a contracting business and how extended warranties can help, don't wanna miss this episode! What are Extended Warranties? It keeps customers from being hit with unexpected and expensive repairs. For instance, Suppose a homeowner buys a new system, only to discover a year or two later that it is defective. With frustration, the homeowner calls their local contractor, who sends a technician. Soon after, the customer is confronted with a costly repair that they did not anticipate so soon after purchasing a brand-new system. However, with an extended warranty, the customer avoids this second expense and remains satisfied. [00:09:00] “In addition to the OEM's warranty, the extended service agreement offers a one-year labor warranty on workmanship and our product comes with a ten-year parts warranty. Contractors, on the other hand, can offer a 90-day labor warranty and a one-year labor warranty,” says Rich Jurek. “Our product gives them the option to purchase ten-year labor and offer their customers a fixed cost solution for ten years so that if their compressor goes out in year seven, the OEM covers the compressor and the extended warranty covers the labor to replace that compressor,” he adds. “At Trinity, we offer a variety of solutions for contractors when it comes to offering extended coverage with their installs, and we listen to what the contractor's needs are as it relates to years of coverage they want to provide, reimbursement rate, and program needs. The goal is to provide a solution that fits a contractor's specific business needs and their market.” Visit https://www.servicebusinessmastery.com for more information and great podcast episodes.
