J'ai Brown serves as an HR Director for HUB International, leading the HR function for the Midwest-West division. Additionally, she is the Executive Sponsor for the Midwest-West Diversity & Inclusion Council and a member of the organizing team for the HUB Women Network ERG. Prior to joining HUB, J'ai worked in roles of increasing responsibility in claims administration and human resources at Allstate Insurance Company before continuing her career in human resources at BMO Financial Group. J'ai received an MBA and B.S. degrees in HR Management and General Management from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and has her PHR and SHRM-CP designations. J'ai resides in Bronzeville with her husband, Frank, and daughter, Kylee. Lauryn grew up in the Southern United States and in high school had a confrontation with race in America that changed her life and directed her future. In 2003, Lauryn graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor in Psychology with a focus on race and multicultural studies. She was committed to racial equality through educational transformation and began individual work to become anti-racist. In 2007, as a part of Teach for America, Lauryn began facilitating sessions for other teachers on Diversity and Achievement, Instruction as well as Classroom Culture, that would continue for the duration of her career. For thirteen years, Lauryn worked for KIPP Chicago, the highest performing school district in Chicago and a national network of charter schools focused on college completion. During her time there, she served as the School Leader of KIPP Ascend Middle School in North Lawndale and, before that, as the Assistant Principal and an ELA teacher. Lauryn is also an inspiring public speaker who has been asked to speak at the National Charter School Conference in Minneapolis, as a keynote speaker for Teach for America's Induction Ceremony, as well as at North Park University, Columbia College and Indiana University-Purdue on Leadership, Consciousness, and Education. Lauryn has a Masters in Curriculum Planning and Design from National Louis University, a National Board Certification in Literacy, and completed the KIPP School Leadership Training Institute at New York University. In 2009, Lauryn was awarded Teacher of the Year for Chicago Charter Schools and in 2011 was a finalist for the Teach for America Distinguished Leader Award. Last June, she was certified as a 15 Commitments Conscious Leadership Coach and left her16-year education career to work as a leader; speaker, consultant, and coach who partners with individuals and organizations to support the emergence of more conscious cultures. Corey Haynes is a thought leader, passionate about people, and a lover of tech. He is the new District Manager at SHI - the leading minority and women-owned tech VAR partner in North America - where he is focused on total tech solutions, business optimization, client strategy, and more. Corey has since moved to downtown Detroit where he has started to rediscover the city, continues to engage in volunteer activities (virtual of course), and continues his work to foster diverse, collaborative communities and partnerships.

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Smitty Harris was born in 1929 in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on January 2, 1951, and made Sgt before entering the Aviation Cadet Program on August 10, 1952. Harris was commissioned a 2d Lt and awarded his pilot wings in September 1953, and then completed advanced flight training in the T-33 Shooting Star and F-84 Thunderjet. His first operational assignment was as an F-86F Sabre pilot with the 45th Day Fighter Squadron at Sidi Slimane AB, French Morocco, followed by service as an instructor pilot at Greenville AFB and then with the 3306th Pilot Training Group at Bainbridge AFB, Georgia, from January 1956 to August 1960. Capt Harris then served as Chief of the Promotions and Flying Status Branch at Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph AFB, Texas, from August 1960 to November 1962. His next assignment was flying F-100 Super Sabres and then F-105 Thunderchiefs with the 561st Tactical Fighter Squadron at McConnell AFB, Kansas, from November 1962 to November 1964. Capt Harris transferred to the 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Kadena AB, Okinawa, in December 1964, and began flying combat missions in Southeast Asia in March 1965. He was forced to eject over North Vietnam while flying his 6th combat mission on April 4, 1965, and was immediately captured and taken as a Prisoner of War. After spending 2,871 days in captivity, he was released during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973. Col Harris was briefly hospitalized to recover from his injuries at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and then he remained at Maxwell to attend the Air War College there from August 1973 to August 1974. He remained on the faculty as Chief of Curriculum Planning until his retirement from the Air Force on July 31, 1979. After retiring from the Air Force, Smitty completed law school and joined the Mississippi Bar in December 1981. He and his wife Louise have three children. Smitty Harris was the 3rd Air Force pilot shot down and taken as a Prisoner of War during the Vietnam War. His 2nd Silver Star Citation reads: For the Period March 1968: This officer distinguished himself by gallantry and intrepidity in action in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force during the above period while a Prisoner of War in North VIetnam. Ignoring international agreements on treatment of prisoners of war, the enemy resorted to mental and physical cruelties to obtain information, confessions, and propaganda materials. This individual resisted their demands by calling upon his deepest inner strengths in a manner which reflected his devotion to duty and great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Chapman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on desegregation policy initiatives, urban school reforms, teaching and learning in racially diverse classrooms, and teaching writing in secondary classrooms. Using her findings, she assists districts, traditional schools, and charter schools in alleviating barriers to student learning and develops policies, teaching practices, and curricula that better serve the social and academic needs of all students. Chapman has published in the areas of English education, qualitative inquiry, urban education, and multicultural education. She also works with schools and communities to improve learning environments and instructional practices for racially and socially diverse groups of students. She holds a BA in English from Spelman College, an MA in Curriculum Planning from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in English Education and Urban Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2016, she received the SHAPE America National Health Education Teacher of the Year award, and she is currently serving as president of PSAHPERD. *Claudia Brown – Claudia holds a B.S. from Springfield College and a master’s degree from American International College. She has been teaching health and physical education in the North Reading Public Schools for 19 years, focusing on curriculum development in HPE for the last six years. She also serves as an adjunct professor of health education at Boston University. Claudia has participated on the Massachusetts AHPERD board for several years, and currently sits as president. *Amy Prior — An NCAAHE Teacher of the Year, as well as SHAPE America Southern District’s Health Educator of the Year, Amy’s 20 plus years of involvement with NCAASPERD-SM and SHAPE America has launched her onto a national platform for teacher voice and educational policy. She has served the past three years on the NCAAHE Board, with the last two as President Elect and current President, affording her a seat on NCAAHPERD-SM's Board of Directors. She also serves as a member of SHAPE America’s National Health Education Standards (NHES) Addendum-Skills Based Task Force and the SHAPE America’s Health Education Assessment (HEAP) Task Force.
