What if your problems could be resolved and the suffering that goes along with them could be alleviated? What if anxiety could transform into serenity? What if aliveness could replace the deadening feeling of depression? What if chronic pain that thus far has been unresponsive to treatment might be resolved, leaving a person pain-free? What if negative relationship problems could be replaced by relationships filled with understanding, empathy, and a shared sense of engagement? What if peace of mind and a feeling of being “at home” could replace the despair of alienation? Today's special guest, Dr. Andrew Hahn, co-author of the book The One-Hour Miracle is here to discuss a revolutionary healing framework called Life Centered Therapy (LCT). LCT is a blueprint for transforming our physical, emotional and mental, relational, and spiritual problems. The One-Hour Miracle expands the understanding of both the causes of and the resolutions for problems, leading to extraordinary outcomes in record time through a novel way/process of marrying mindfulness and somatic (body-centered) therapy. Sometimes, the transformation takes just one hour. Over the past 30 years Life Centered Therapy has been profoundly helpful at supporting people who want to heal from PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and some autoimmune issues. Dr. Andrew Hahn does this by guiding his clients to heal themselves through releasing trapped energy and trauma from their bodies. Andrew Hahn, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist. Today's guest is Dr David Meltzer David Meltzer, OD is a US Army veteran of the Iraq War and an optometrist at Salus University in Philadelphia. David Melter has literally looked into the eyes of killers and lived to tell the story. David is a native of Rockville, Maryland. After spending the better part of his high school days skipping school and getting bad grades, he was rejected form the University of Maryland. So, at 17 years old, on a whim, David decided to join the Army, where he was assigned to a healthcare unit. After his army training, attending optometry school and Hahnemann University, David found himself being shipped off to Iraq as part of a surgical team attached to the US Army's 1st Armored Division. Being one of only a few eye doctors early in the Iraq war, David frequently got calls to treat not only injured members of the US military, but high value prisoners after they were captured and needed medical care. David treated multiple members of the infamous Iraqi “deck of cards”, including none other than the Ace of Spades himself - Saddam Hussain. David also treated Saddam's top general “Chemical” Ali and the Iraq's Foreign Minister and chief propagandist Tariq Aziz. David shares some fascinating stories of what it was like to literally look into the eyes of killers. David describes what happened when “Chemical” Ali, known for using chemical weapons against the Kurdish people, came face to face in a hallway with a Kurdish translator, who was working with the American forces, whose entire family was killed in those attack David also tells us about the time he was called to a prison to treat Saddam Hussain only a few days after he was captured. After the war, David tells stories of the multiple leaders at he was called to treat during his time at Walter Reid Hospital, including the then Vice President Joe Biden. David and I also discuss his time treating at the US Military Academy at West Point how he started the sports vision program there for the cadets David and I also discuss how he got connected tohttps://sportsvision.nyc/ ( Dr Dan Laby )- a thought leader in the field of vision - and how that collaboration has led to David becoming the Spring Training eye doctor to multiple major league sports teams like the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. We end our chat with how David got involved with the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team and how he plays ice hockey on an injured warriors hockey team that takes the ice vs. NHL legends like John LeClair, Mark Howe, Danny Brier and Kjell Sameulson. We wrap things with David's thoughts on why today's high school students could benefits from that military services can provide today's college age students. So … Thank you for listening. Christopher Whinney MD is the Department Chair for Hospital Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, where he oversees 200 providers and 6 hospitals. He completed his medical school at Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University and residency in Internal Medicine from Temple. His Clinical Interests include inpatient and perioperative medicine. He enjoys mentoring students, residents and faculty and has been awarded 2018 Master Teacher of the Year Award by ACP Ohio and the 2020 Center for Excellence in Coaching and Mentoring's Mentor of the Year award at the Cleveland Clinic. As physicians, we must strive for clinical expertise, but that's not where our work ends. Today, Dr. Christopher Whinney shares a personal anecdote of being in the hospital with his wife who had terminal breast cancer. He experienced more closely what it was like to be on the other side of the hospital bed. When Dr. Whinney looks back, it's not just the clinical expertise that he remembers. It's the compassion and the care brought to the bedside. Little acts of kindness that really made an impact: the doctor slowing down, taking a seat, asking his wife “what do you need?" Pearls of Wisdom: 1. At the start of a rotation, ask everyone on your team for one interesting fact about them, beyond medicine, to get to know each other. 2. When you think about healthcare from the perspective of a patient, compassion is what patients remember, more than clinical expertise. Practice little random acts of kindness. 3. Mentorship is not a quick fix, it's a journey. Think of it not as transactional, but as relational. 4. When deliberating whether to reach out to a mentor, just do it! If they say no, move on to someone else!
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! In episode 266, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C welcomes back Dr. Andy Hahn for part 2 about his Life Centered Therapy method and training process. About our guest: Andrew Hahn, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist. He received his A.B. Magna Cum Laude in Social Studies/Psychology from Harvard University and his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Hahnemann University. He is certified by Helen Palmer to teach the Enneagram and has also been a faculty member in the graduate Counselling Programs at Lesley University and Northeastern University. While Dr. Hahn’s strong foundation and significant experience in traditional psychology has served his clients well, he has been untiring in his effort to understand what is going on for people so that he can better help them live more contented and healthier lives. This calling for greater understanding, as well as certain experiences which he could not fully comprehend within the confines of traditional Western paradigms, led him on a search for answers that opened him to the worlds of Buddhist and Eastern Psychology; Mystery Trainings; and Depth, Archetypal and Spiritual Psychology. Thich Nhat Hanh, Brugh Joy, Dick Olney, Helen Palmer, Barbara Hastings, and Claudio Naranjo were particularly influential teachers for him. His collaboration with Dr Judith Swack opened him to the world of kinesiology and energy psychology. Taking all of his prior experience and this collaboration led to the development of Life Centered Therapy and its training institute. Dr. Hahn has been using LCT for the past 25 years to successfully treat physical problems such as chronic pain, asthma, and allergies; emotional and mental problems such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and much much more. In addition, a year-long training program has taught the approach to over a thousand students. Life Centered Therapy is a revolutionary healing framework that is a blueprint for transforming most problems, ranging from the most pedestrian to the most treatment resistant. And sometimes, the transformation simply takes one hour. The work provides people with an entirely new way of healing their suffering and helps them create miracles in their lives. Laurel’s research examines how the brain controls perception and action. She studies people who have had strokes in particular parts of their brains to uncover where in the brain strokes may cause certain difficulties or impairments. She also uses a wide variety of techniques including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), eye tracking, and electroencephalography to further understand how we perceive and interact with our environment. When she’s not at work, Laurel enjoys reading, taking walks around the beautiful arboretum near her house, attending dance fitness classes at a local studio, spending time with friends, and going out to listen to her husband’s funk band play live music. Laurel received her BA in Biological Bases of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in Clinical Psychology (with specialization in Neuropsychology) from Hahnemann University. Afterwards, she completed an NIH National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Fellowship at Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute and the University of Pennsylvania. Over the course of her career, Laurel has received numerous awards and honors, including the Kenneth M. Viste Award of the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, the Arthur S. Benton Mid-Career Award of the International Neuropsychological Society, the Widener University Graduate Award for Excellence in Professional Psychology, the Maimonides Society Manuscript Award, and the Cohen Award for Research Excellence from the Einstein Healthcare Network. In our interview Laurel shares more about her life and science.

“A psychoanalytic consultant is really the enemy of people ignoring the role that the unconscious has in their lives, just denying that there is an unconscious effect on their rationally selected behavior. I strongly believe that the interferences from the unconscious can be minimized by a consultant, just as we can minimize the irrational influence on patients in our work with mental illness.” Description: Steven S. Rolfe welcomes Dr. David Sachs to this episode. Dr. David Sachs is one of our pioneers, he has worked off the couch from a relatively early time in his career and we will hear today about how his interest in business and organizational consulting grew and was deeply influenced by his training and experience as a psychoanalyst. Key takeaways: [3:15] How Dr. David Sachs’ training and experience prepared him to consult with businesses. [4:00] Analyst’s skills applied to consulting with people in the business world. Listen NowThe administration and the Congress are currently discussing various proposals to reform drug pricing policy. Drug prices, as listeners are likely well aware, have risen substantially over the past two decades. For example, between 1997 and 2007 they tripled and currently year-over-year Medicare Part D drug spending is expected to grow through 2026 at twice the 2007 through 2013 growth rate. The administration formally began its effort last May with the announcement of its drug pricing "blueprint." The Congress is currently holding hearings, e.g., the Senate Finance and House Oversight committees, on drug pricing. The administration currently is proposing two drug pricing reforms that would address both Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D drug pricing and the Congress has already introduced several bills to curb drug price growth. During this 28 minute conversation Dr. Levin discusses ATAP's mission and funding and ATAP's position on the administration's current proposal to reform Medicare Part B drug pricing via reference pricing or via the use of an international price index. Dr. Levin discusses moreover the administration's current proposal to reform Medicare Part D drug pricing by eliminating or prohibiting drug manufacturers from paying a rebate to pharmaceutical benefit managers (PBMs) and Part D plan sponsors. Our conversation concludes with Dr. Levin's comments concerning the long standing debate whether the Secretary of DHHS should be allowed to negotiate Part D drug prices with manufacturers. Dr. Robert Levin is the President of the Alliance for Transparent and Affordable Prescriptions (ATAP), President of the Florida Society of Rheumatology and is a practicing physician in Tampa Bay. He teaches medicine at the University of South Florida and has served as a principal investigator in dozens of clinical trials involving rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, lower back pain and fibromylagia. Dr. Levin is board certified in Internal Medicine with a sub-specialty in rheumatoid arthritis and is a fellow with the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians. He earned his medical degree at Hahnemann University in Pennsylvania, did his residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Oberlin College in Ohio. You may have heard about the mind-body connection, but have you ever stopped to think what that really means? Today, I have with me Meg Deak, a licensed professional counselor, music therapist, EFT practitioner and the author of the forthcoming book Endorphin Soup™. She is going to explain how your emotions create your reality and what you can do when you want to make changes that last. Your Subconscious Body Welcome Meg! Can you tell us briefly, a bit about your background and how you got started? And what IS EFT? I learned all about stress from the inside out, by experiencing burnout in my first career in 1978. I began to explore sound and music, especially how the voice can be used in the healing process. I studied music therapy at Hahnemann University, and received a master of Creative Arts in Therapy. I later developed an interest in vibroacoustics and brainwave entrainment and studied with Dr. Jeffrey Thompson at the Center for Neuroacoustic Research. In 1998, I was introduced to EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques, which is a gentle method of clearing emotional distress by tapping on specific acupressure points. It’s used to provide relief for emotional distress. I found it so powerful that I became a certified practitioner. One of the things that struck me in your presentation was when you used the phrase “the subconscious body”. Can you give us some examples of how our emotions create a physical reaction in our body? What is that Mind-Body connection? Our thoughts and our feelings are essentially two sides of the same coin. Every thought has a feeling connected to it. Some thoughts are neutral, so there’s little to feel, but some are loaded. We feel them, because they are chemicals that run through the body… like insulin or serotonin. And they are all different – they feel different, because every emotion has its own chemical signature. Anger feels different than sadness or joy, because it’s a different chemical. Studies of the brain show that emotion is central to the thinking process. It's emotions that fuel learning and making decisions, which why it’s hard to make a decision when we feel emotionally overwhelmed. Emotion helps us remember. You may not remember what you had for breakfast, but if you won the lottery, while you were eating blueberry pancakes…I guarantee you’d remember that breakfast. Strong feelings are encoded in the body, and we now know that the body is what we’ve always called the subconscious. And what are a couple of examples of some simple changes a person can make to start turning their health around? First, pay attention to your thoughts, do a reality check – am I making this bigger than it is? Second, learn to accept and manage your feelings. When we’re over-stressed or have negative thoughts and feelings, we’re susceptible to getting sick. When we focus on positive thoughts & feelings the immune system gets a boost and it’s easier to fight off infection. That’s why I teach EFT to all my clients. It’s a self-help tool to neutralize uncomfortable feelings and enhance those like calm, peace, and joy. And, remember…Stressed out people look older! I see it all the time in my practice; I get to watch people become younger looking, right before my eyes, as they let go of tension and stress. If you want to talk to Meg or Myself for that matter, please join us this Sunday at the Twin Ponds Integrative Center in Breinigsville. We are celebrating its 10th Anniversary and all proceeds benefit Parkinson’s support groups in this area You can find me at LRSoundEnergy.com or at facebook.com/liferhythms Until next time, Keep it Simple, Be Healthy! https://supersimplehealthy.com
Episode 74: Jean Bail is the Director, Disaster Medicine and Management at Philadelphia University. Jean is a dedicated teacher, educator, paramedic, nurse and mentor. If it was not for Jean, this podcaster would of never graduated from college. It was a little EMS program at Hahnemann University, where our paths crossed. I was struggling as a college student up to this point. I was about to start a new job as supervisor in the City of Brotherly Love. Jean accepted me in the EMS Degree program and the rest is history. Jean and I talk about how she got the program started, the early days, the great faculty and her interest in EMS and infection control. We might mention some of my past podcast guests and what kind of students they (me) were like. A good discussion on leadership and education in EMS is included.

Nationally known author, psychologist, and radio show host Dr. Dan Gottlieb is the guest on the May 31, 2016 edition of Boomer Generation Radio, to discuss the broad topic of love. Dan Gottlieb began his practice in 1969 after receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees at Temple University. As a young psychologist, his early career specialized in addictions where he ultimately was the director of a community based treatment program at Belmont Institute in Philadelphia. At the time he was director of two outpatient clinics and one inpatient unit supervising over 30 staff. He was also a graduate of the highly respected Family Institute of Philadelphia, a program that later elected him as president. img_about_dan720x400During this time he became a highly respected clinician, teacher and supervisor of psychiatrists, psychologists and clinical social workers. He taught at Hahnemann University and consulted with many other faculty members throughout the region. Personally, he was happily married and had loved being a father to his young daughters. However, his early successes were tragically interrupted. In 1979 Dan was in a near fatal automobile accident which left him paralyzed from the chest down. As expected, there were years of despair and depression. He experienced loss on top of loss as his wife left the marriage and passed away several years later. And in the ensuing years he mourned the loss of his sister and his parents. And for the last three decades, he has been observing life with passion and discussion and learning valuable lessons about what it means to be human and how adversity can teach us how to live better and love better. Despite this adversity, he resumed his private practice which was to grow substantially over the next several decades. In addition to his practice, he has continued to lecture, train and supervise a variety of healthcare professionals. Since 1985, Daniel Gottlieb has been hosting “Voices in the Family,” an award-winning mental health call-in radio show aired on WHYY 90.9 FM, Philadelphia's local public radio station. From 1993 until 2008, he wrote a highly regarded column for the Philadelphia Inquirer titled: “Inside Out,” reflecting his perspective on the intersection of the events in our world and the events in our minds and hearts. He has also published four books, including the international bestseller: Letters to Sam: A Grandfather's Lessons on Love, Loss, and the Gifts of Life. His newest book, The Wisdom We're Born With: Restoring Faith in Ourselves, was released in March, to rave reviews from mental health professionals around the country. All of his royalties will be donated to the Khulani school for disabled children in South Africa. In addition to his writing and radio show, he delivered over 1000 lectures all over the world on a variety of topics affecting the well-being of people, families and the larger community. The essence of his philosophy can be found on his business card. After his name there are no degrees and no fancy titles. His card simply says “Gottlieb. Human.” Through personal and professional experience, Dan has learned that our greatest suffering is alienation and loneliness. That is these powerful emotions can produce prejudice, hatred, violence, withdrawal and depression. He has learned that all humans long for human contact, compassion and understanding. And without compassion, our spirits wither. When asked to summarize his life's work, he says simply: “I teach kindness.”

You've probably heard of someone who's suffered from chronic pain, gone to doctors, ran all the tests necessary, and surprisingly, none of the doctors could actually diagnose the problem. Andrew Hahn, Founder of Life Centered Therapy, joins today's episode to explain how chronic pain, limiting beliefs, and even addictions are not physical in nature, but energetic. Hahn is a licensed clinical psychologist who received his A.B. Magna Cum Laude in Social Studies/Psychology from Harvard University and his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Hahnemann University. He is certified by Helen Palmer to teach the Enneagram and has also been a faculty member in the graduate Counseling Programs at Lesley University and Northeastern University. On this episode, Andrew talks about regressions, past lives, and changing our internalized narrative. He shares how our symptoms and suffering are an invitation for awareness, integrations, and mastery of experiences that we have yet been unable to handle.Part of the conversation covers how every kind of suffering is something that couldn't be handled and taken in stride. Whether you call it chronic pain, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease, depression, anxiety, addiction, bad relationships – it's something that couldn't be handled and integrated. Trauma is subjective. It's something that can't be handled. And so, people need to be free of their reactivity. Every symptom you have is, on the surface, awful – but on a soul level, it's a clue to what it is that couldn't be handled and integrated. That includes addiction. In order to heal, one has to master what couldn't be handled and integrated and then change his or her narrative. Once you've conquered that, you transcend it. Then you're not in that piece of suffering anymore. In this episode, you will hear:The beginnings of Life Centered TherapyThe concept of pain and where it's coming fromHealing from pain and trauma through a shift of perspectiveUnderstanding your story of betrayalHow changing your narrative leads to growth and healingThe reason for chronic pain that can't be explained even by doctorsThe positive emotional charge behind addiction as well as anticipatory fearsKey Quotes:[11:10] - “Everything you suffer about is something that couldn't be handled and taken in stride. “[11:42] - “Trauma is subjective. It's just simply something that can't be handled.”[13:02] - "What is healing? – mastering what couldn't be handled and integrated."[14:12] - “The shift is from being identified with the one who is traumatized to identifying with the one who is holding or hosting or witnessing the one who is traumatized, which is who we really are.”[24:28] - “Every discomfort is a narrative that couldn't be handled, and anything you can't handle has an exact associated discomfort, becomes the discomfort, and the world's changed.”[26:09] - "Find what you're suffering about. Drop, whatever you think it is. Scan your body. Find the sensation. Bring all your awareness to such a degree there that you become that sensation from the inside-out."[37:30] - "The thing you think is an accident and fate, you unconsciously create without awareness because that sensation acts like a magnet."Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
