Deciding the verdict in the Lauren Dickason trial would've been an extremely difficult decision for any jury. The 42-year-old has been found guilty of murdering her three daughters at their Timaru home in 2021. Dickason pleaded insanity, caused by postpartum depression. The Criminal Bar Association's former president Gary Gotlieb told Kate Hawkesby it was a case of having to weigh up the different views of experts. He questions whether it's appropriate for juries to determine the outcome in cases like these - where experts themselves are divided. Dickason has been remanded to Hillmorton Hospital, before her sentencing. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meanwhile the District Council is grappling with how to operate safely at the orange light - under a mayor who had refused the Pfizer vaccine. Thames-Coromandel Councillor Gary Gotlieb told Checkpoint Mayor Sandra Goudie's attitude on Covid and vaccination has been "nothing short of disgraceful". — “If the Universe, the planet, life, you and every product of the process of creation is miraculous beyond comprehension, then what does that make the very process itself? Can you create a process of creation, and what is there to know about it beyond you? Then, you'll notice that your perception of the process of creation is that the process itself is miraculous beyond comprehension.” It encourages the process to flourish (or loves the creation) just because it exists, not for what it does, achieves or doesn't. It just encourages the process to flourish (loves the process itself) whatever happens.” Valeria Teles interviews David ‘Bhakti' Gotlieb — the author of “Healing Inner Conflict: The Purpose Behind Behaviours We Regret And What To Do About It.” David ‘Bhakti' Gotlieb brings a lifetime of experience to his counselling, supervision and professional development workshops. It may not happen overnight, but the evolving nature of TV consumption methods is bringing a "tipping point" in the way that TV ads are bought and sold. That is according to a veteran media agency executive who has been observing the long arc of supply and demand toward a profound shift. In my podcast interview with former GroupM global chairman Irwin Gotlieb talks about how connected TV is re-shaping the TV upfront ad sales season. Media's pincer move Gotlieb sees two big dynamics. 1. Shift from linear to non-linear content "In a linear world, you can use programming strategies - things like lead-ins, lead outs, hammocks, tent poles, that kind of stuff. You can use the built-in promotion schedules... In a nonlinear world, it's much more challenging to create awareness. If you can't create awareness, your audiences are going to, by default, be smaller." 2. Growth of subscription content "In a world where subscriber support is growing (relative to) advertiser support, what you have is a situation where you have supply diminution and that is inflationary on CPMs. There's almost no way to offset that, and that's a huge challenge." The future of the future Irwin's tenure at GroupM parent WPP began in September 1999 when he joined the company as Chairman and CEO of Mindshare Worldwide. He launched Mindshare North America by consolidating the media resources of JWT and Ogilvy, His ad industry career, however dates back to 1970. In 2007, he was named one of the media industry's top 25 most influential leaders by TV Week and inducted into Broadcasting & Cable Magazine's Hall of Fame. Now Gotlieb says the big media shifts are creating a big moment in the evolution of TV advertising. He says the upfronts are a "futures market" and, with TV ad supply decreasing but demand continuing to be high, "there is in fact a tipping point". "I'm not suggesting in any way that upfronts are going to go away," Gotlieb points out. "I don't think they ever will. Futures markets will always exist in some form in the media world. Will they exist in their present form? I'm not certain." Dollars to dimes? Of course, all TV and video companies are heavily invested in transitioning to the digital, non-linear world of which Gotlieb is talking. But he thinks a clean conversion that protects all revenue won't be possible - because it won't be possible to protect all ad inventory and all views. "The commercial loads that are going to be acceptable in AVOD in the nonlinear world are going to be one third of what they had been in the linear world," he says. "There is only one potential solution to that - refined targeting and addressability ... something to be blunt that hasn't developed at the pace that it should have. "Today, I think the media sell side has to deal with the reality that they have lower commercial loads and audiences are drifting inexorably in that direction. "The buy-side is either going to be faced with skyrocketing cost per thousands or improved targeting and addressability solves the problem for both (sides)." :33 FDA commissioner Gotlieb made an announcement regarding tobacco and nicotine regulation. 1:20 Proposed new deadline for submission of newly deemed tobacco products. A more than 4 year entension. 2:02 Revisiting the PMTA and MRTP process. 2:30 The application and approval process as it stands is really not clear to anyone. 4:00 This extension is not going to affect any other rules as written. (IE warning labels and ingredient listings, those are as is origanllly written) 4:24 This is all proposed and rules will need to be promulgated. 4:44 A rule regarding products standard for e liquid this includes the agency looking at flavors. 5:21 This is interesting as we should have a discussion about the role flavors play in allowing smokers to switch to a low risk tobacco product. 5:25 It's nice to see someone at FDA willing to onvestigate the issue and not weighed down by decades of ideology. 6:04 The other anticipated rules or gudance we believe will include battery safety. 6:39 Very low nicotine cigarettes. http://reason.com/blog/2017/08/02/a-cap-on-nicotine-in-cigarettes-would-be 7:33 Merit denicotined cigarette https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2726800/ 9:00 This proposal has been around for awhile, most recently it got a shot in the arm by NIH giving 100 million for studying the issue. It raises all sorts of ethical questions about the efficacy of doing this as we discovered with low tar and light cigarettes smokers inhaled the smoke deepr into the lung causing issues in the deeper lung tissues. 10:00 The press has run with the idea that the FDA will lower the nicotine content but the idea that harm reduction needs the heavy hand of regulation instead of truthful information is troubling. 12:48 There is nothing to stop the FDA from also mandating the nicotine content in smokeless tobacco and in vapor products as well. http://casaa.org/news/fdas-new-approach-to-nicotine-regulation-whats-in-and-whats-out/ 17:00 Any sort of FDA or legislative relief could cause opponents to fire back harder than ever. 17:28 This could lead to states and municipalities pushing regulations much harder as they think the Federal Government has dropped the ball. 17:40 Dr Jerome Adams confirmation hearing. https://www.help.senate.gov/hearings/nomination-hearing5 18:18 Extending PMTA rules is just one facet of the regulation process. The government still has all of the same regulatory powers as before and none of the other regulations have changed. 19:47 https://patch.com/new-york/whiteplains/e-cig-dangers-discussed-roundtable 25:25 New Jersey Tobacco 21,Maine Tobacco 21,Expecting Oregon to approve Tobacco 21 any day now. 27:42 Heath http://www.recorder.com/With-no-stores-Heath-eyes-tobacco-sales-regs-11546318 29:19 Banning menthol 31:10 On Australia 37:07 Hearing personal sucess stories and the effect on lawmakers. 37:47 You may not see it but our members and people who have participated in things like the Njoy citizens petition and the Calls to action to contact legislators are swaying hearts and minds. 39:58 CASAA has worked for years to ensire the consumers view is represented not just with legislators but wiith trade groups and the like.

On this week's #MediaSnack we start with a consideration of the impact of Donald Trump's election this week as President-elect of the USA. Our friend Brian Wieser, senior analyst from Pivotal Research Group was the first off the block with his thoughts on how the global advertising industry could be affected. Brian posted his analyst perspectives at 3am NY time as the election result was just becoming clear - which means he'd devoted his evening to shaping thoughts, well done Brian. His main observations were based on the economic, political and regulatory uncertainty, but also covered the impact of potential immigration restrictions especially for multi-national media companies such as media agency networks and ad platforms such as Google and Facebook. He also acknowledged the important role that Twitter plays in these type of global events, although they perhaps weren’t able to commercialise it fully yet. We note the learnings that will surely come from Donald Trump’s unexpected triumph, notably with far less of a campaign war chest compared to the well-funded Hilary Clinton. A Bloomberg Politics report estimates Hilary’s funding exceeded $1bn whilst Trump managed a mere $512m - yet Trump dominated media coverage by a vast margin. Whether by accident or design Trump managed to leverage not just social media power (as Obama had done to huge success in 2012) but dominated mainstream media with his provocative narrative. Estimates are that Donald Trump generated over $2bn value of earned media in his race for POTUS. Continuing the Trump theme, we refer to a piece written by Dominic Mills for Mediatel which made a parallel between Donald Trump’s “blusterous” style (in an attempt to avoid addressing difficult subjects) and comments made by GroupM Global Chairman Irwin Gotlieb at a recent conference in New York. At the Video Everywhere Summit on 28th October Irwin Gotlieb was asked about the media transparency reporting published this year by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA). The ANA Media Transparency report highlighted a rift between advertiser and media agency and pushed trust between the two to new lows. But rather than try to bring parties together, which is what Irwin had called for back in 2015 and which Tom reported on from the ANA’s Advertising Financial Management Conference in Florida, he instead took the opportunity of his platform to further undermine the credibility of the ANA’s initiative. “I’m going to be really harsh,” Gotlieb said candidly. “The entire effort was a biz-dev effort. … The ANA allowed themselves to be part of a third-party’s business development.” Irwin is typically very careful with his words and would not have said such inflammatory things on a public stage in naivety. This was an intentional act designed to further undermine the credibility of a report designed for and funded by America’s largest advertisers, to benefit them. Dominic Mill’s comparison to Trump is not just timely, it's accurate. Brian Jacobs also wrote excellently about this on his recent Cog Blog, link below. Finally, we bring news that Toyota, the car manufacturer who you will remember was recently at the centre of a dramatic over-billing scandal by their Japanese agency Dentsu, have (in unrelated matters) shifted their entire $300m media and creative business away from Publicis Groups agencies and into WPP without a pitch. The comments from Toyota suggest a client with a clarity of vision to create a blueprint for agency resources, as we’ve spoken many times about on #MediaSnack previously.

We have all seen it - on coins, stamps, postcards, t-shirts, billboards, and classroom walls. In 1851 Emanuel Gottlieb Luetze painted "Washington Crossing the Delaware", an iconic image of the General's attack on Trenton during a bitter December night in 1776. Lost in all of the painting's fame, however, is the irony that the German-born artist was glamorizing the defeat of German auxiliary forces as the turning point in the American Revolution. Cathy Langer, head book buyer for the Tattered Cover Bookstore, moderates a panel featuring three success authors in a discussion of the business skills required to be a "Literary CEO." Joining Cathy in the 710 KNUS AM studios are Nick Arvin, author of The Reconstructionist, and Erin Blakemore, author of The Heroine's Bookshelf. Also participating by phone from New York is Eli Gottlieb, author of The Face Thief. As co-hosts David Biondo and Dean Rotbart point out, writing and successfully publishing a book is very much a business - requiring many of the same skills that any successful entrepreneur must master. Do you have the right product line (subject matter)? How much will it cost to produce (time, lost opportunities, out-of-pocket expenses)? What's your marketing plan (if no one buys the book, then what)? Do you have the self-discipline and dedication to see the project through? What type of team do you need to assemble to get the job done (agent, publisher, PR, editor, etc.)? This is the second of three related segments. Original air date: February 26, 2012Photo: Nick Arvin, The Reconstructionist
The Business Unconventional "book club" continues its exploration of the business skills required by successful book authors. On this segment, the final of three related segments, guest moderator Cathy Langer and three successful authors share insights that aspiring authors can use to help them along their journey, including the question of how to connect with a good book agent. Cathy is the head book buyer at Colorado's famed Tattered Cover Bookstore. Joining her in this conversation are Nick Arvin, author of The Reconstructionist; Erin Blakemore, author of The Heroine's Bookshelf; and Eli Gottlieb, author of The Face Thief. B. Unconventional airs each Sunday morning at 8 a.m. (MST) on 710 KNUS in Denver. The program, hosted by David Biondo and Dean Rotbart, is also streamed over the Internet at www.710KNUS.com.
