TRIGGER WARNING- Divorce, DV, Abuse, Trauma Abuse isn't talked about enough. In this solo episode, I talk about statistics surrounding abuse, types of abuse and my own story as a survivor of several kinds of abuse. I talk about divorce and how it traumatizes someone. I talk about betrayal trauma, reactive abuse and something almost no one talks about- post-separation abuse, which is how the abuse doesn't stop after you get a divorce and in fact, it may even get worse. Does that mean you should stay to avoid it? No way. But it is something that needs to be brought to people's attention. I talk about how easy it is for those who have never experienced abuse to stand on the other side of the street and judge someone for staying in an abusive relationship, how hard it is to leave and stay gone, and the mental overload of trying to heal after you've left. If you've never been in an abusive relationship, listen to this episode because I guarantee you know someone going through it right now and this may help you be a better supporter for them. If you're going through this or have gone through it, I'm so sorry you're experiencing this and this episode may help. I don't talk about narcissistic abuse in this episode because that is going to be an episode all on it's own and because narcissistic abuse typically encompasses several of the types of abuse I discuss in this episode. I do mention it but don't go into detail. In this Getting Real series, Bill sits down with Mike Birdsall to learn more about his entrepreneurial journey. Mike is the co-founder of DateBox Club, a monthly date night subscription box. Prior to DateBox Club, Mike launched Birdsall Interactive, a web design firm, and FanConneX, an in-venue sports fan experience. Mike has been an entrepreneur all of his life, but how did he get from his start to here? Let’s find out. Mike and his wife started his most recent business in business 2015 when they had become empty nesters. In the beginning, the journey was tough. They were putting their heart and soul into it and weren’t sure if the payoff was there yet. They were struggling in this business for four years. The bank accounts were just slowly being drained. One of the challenges within the business was that they’d come up with a new date night idea, get the samples, and realize that they were awful. This meant they were forced to pivot into a new idea almost immediately as they had to get something out to their clients within a week. Mike calculated that they walked 9 miles around their table during “launch week.” What was it like working with a spouse? Bill did it and there were a lot of challenges that they had to overcome as a team. Mike had to learn how to stick to his lane and let his wife run in hers. Both of them are pretty alpha and driven people, so it was important to set clear boundaries in the very beginning of the relationship. Is the world becoming more peaceful? Or less? How would we know if it was? In an effort to measure peace, entrepreneur and philanthropist Steve Killelea founded the Institute for Economics and Peace, a nonprofit global research institute that measures peace levels around the world. The Institute created the conceptual framework for “positive peace,” which describes the attitudes, structures and institutions that underpin and sustain peaceful societies. Hint: Peace includes more than just an absence of violence. The Institute’s work now informs influential institutions such as the United Nations and the World Bank. In the first half of this episode, Steve describes the difference between “positive peace” and “negative peace,” plus how the Institute developed the framework for positive peace. Are you jealous? Has jealousy manifested itself as anger or resentment toward your partner? How have you dealt with it? In this week's episode, we dive into a topic that affects all people and relationships to some degree, yet many fail to properly address it with their partner. Jealousy is a seemingly natural human emotion; quite often it's just a sign that you care. But dealt with the wrong way, jealously can drive a wedge between an otherwise happy and healthy relationship. To help others overcome and avoid this wedge, we take a dive into some of our own bouts with jealousy in our past, dissect what made us feel that way, how we dealt with it at the time, and how it could've been handled differently. By opening up our relationship and communication to you all, we hope we can encourage stronger communication between you and your partners, and help you deal with the insecurities and barriers that arise from feeling jealous. Remember, jealousy is not fact, it's a feeling. To close the episode out, we discuss our COVID-friendly Valentine's Day plans - an absolute must to keep your relationship strong in these trying times - and announce our new “Date Box” to help you do just that. Communication is not just about saying and hearing words—it's all about relaying ideas accurately with the intent of building a mutual understanding. When you practice healthy habits for talking, listening, and processing together, it's for the good of your marriage and ultimately, for the glory of God. If we are to have marriages that are healthy, enjoyable, and intentional, we must learn and apply wise principles to how we communicate. We must heed Solomon's words in Proverbs 18:2: A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in expressing his opinion. Bad communication habits can stifle growth, inhibit intimacy, and create endless spouts of bickering, arguing, and division. However, healthy communication will fuel growth and intimacy and make your marriage resilient against otherwise devastating disagreements. In today's podcast, we discuss biblical themes for healthy communication, why we are called to point our spouses to the gospel through how we listen, and five tangible steps (habits) that lead us down the path toward healthier communication. Mentioned in Today's Show: Resource: 5 Indispensable Habits for Rock Solid Communication Learn more about Datebox and get your first month FREE. Learn more about The 31-Day Pursuit Challenge, our couple's devotional. Ask any question, leave us a voicemail, or write a letter to your spouse! Show Notes: Communication: 5 Habits for Hearing and Being Heard the Healthy Way Highs and Lows Dysfunction in marriage often manifests itself first through communication Two themes in scripture around communication: A call to wisdom: be slow to speak, fast to listen, fast to wait Intentional communication with the purpose of being understood and understanding others Communication corruptors create unintentional misunderstandings Five habits for healthier communication: Talk intentionally Listen intently Seek Understanding Act out of Love Rest in Your Covenant Couple's Challenge (see below) Rapid Fire Q&A Read a letter from a wife to her husband Housekeeping and announcements Prayer Today's Couples Challenge: Listen to the podcast. Talk through the above points. Create a set of ground rules that protect your marriage against common pitfalls in your communication. Examples: We won't start heavy conversations after we're both tired. We will always resolve hard conversations. We will not use hurtful language or namecalling when angry. We understand that it's sometimes healthiest to step away from the situation to think and pray. Etc... Don't forget! Please SUBSCRIBE, RATE, and REVIEW this podcast on your app of choice. It takes 30-60 seconds, and it helps get the word out about gospel-centered marriage. Thank you! Do you have a question? If you have a question, ask! During each episode, we encourage listeners to share their stories, ask questions, or write letters to their loved ones. Anything goes...
