Language models (LMs) have become ubiquitous in both NLP research and in commercial product offerings. As their commercial importance has surged, the most powerful models have become closed off, gated behind proprietary interfaces, with important details of their training data, architectures, and development undisclosed. Given the importance of these details in scientifically studying these models, including their biases and potential risks, we believe it is essential for the research community to have access to powerful, truly open LMs. To this end, this technical report details the first release of OLMo, a state-of-the-art, truly Open Language Model and its framework to build and study the science of language modeling. Unlike most prior efforts that have only released model weights and inference code, we release OLMo and the whole framework, including training data and training and evaluation code. We hope this release will empower and strengthen the open research community and inspire a new wave of innovation. 2024: Dirk Groeneveld, Iz Beltagy, Pete Walsh, Akshita Bhagia, Rodney Kinney, Oyvind Tafjord, A. Study from the National Academy of Sciences: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1414146111 3. “This “outrage industrial complex” works by catering to just one ideological side, creating a species of addiction by feeding our desire to believe that we are completely right and that the other side is made up of knaves and fools. It strokes our own biases while affirming our worst assumptions about those who disagree with us.” -Arthur C. Brooks, "Our Culture of Contempt" 4. “When you see my face, hope it gives you hell. When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell. If you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well. Then he's a fool, you're just as well, hope it gives you hell.” -The All American Rejects, "Gives You Hell" 5. “Scandal is great entertainment because it allows people to feel contempt, a moral emotion that gives feelings of moral superiority while asking nothing in return. With contempt you don't need to right the wrong (as with anger) or flee the scene (as with fear or disgust). And best of all, contempt is made to share. Stories about the moral failings of others are among the most common kinds of gossip, they are a staple of talk radio, and they offer a ready way for people to show that they share a common moral orientation. Tell an acquaintance a cynical story that ends with both of you smirking and shaking your heads and voila, you've got a bond. Well, stop smirking. Greetings and welcome to another episode on the RORE platform!! Greg Angello and Brock Zevan are back together on this very, very important subject matter as we have shifted to a different real estate market from where we just came from. But not a new market... a corrected market where buyers are less challenged in multiple offer situations and over asking, and days on market have increased. What does it mean to "win" your listing appointment? Brock thoroughly dives into what a listing appointment looks like from months before, what he says, what he brings, and most importantly, the "five touches" he does even before going to the listing appointment. This podcast is for any agent, whether new or seasoned, as certain skill sets are in high demand in this challenging market, as home sellers are looking for solutions to get their home sold and not become an expired listing. I encourage you to listen and take notes as this is probably more a high level teaching podcast, or a CE class, on winning your listing appointment. Dr David Atkinson is both an award-winning researcher and a practitioner of enterprise and entrepreneurship in their widest sense. His monograph, Thinking the Art of Management, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2007. With a new book project nearing submission, his interest in applied philosophy accompanies 15+ years commercial, entrepreneurial and organisational leadership experience, built on an extensive career as a communications and IT & systems analyst, consultant project engineer and manager in public service. With one of his more recent ventures, he held a position in the http://startups.co.uk/ (StartUps.co.uk) ‘Top 100 startups to watch'. for three consecutive years. David is openly, and proudly autistic. In 2000, he embarked on an academic journey while engaging in business creation. Since 2018, he has been working part-time in academia, where his neuro-divergent free-thinking and curious nature have been central to what and how he achieves what he does. His focus in his new book project is on developing his past and current research and experience of embedding critical philosophical approaches to sensemaking about the reality of capitalist enterprise. This offers potential benefits to understanding our place within the moral, social and political dimensions of socio-economic organisational praxis. In short: David thinks critically about our emergence in an uncertain world of socio-economic, enterprising work. Support this podcast

Liberal elites like David Atkinson shows his disdain for "rural white Americans" by suggesting they are ungrateful for not bowing to the government for what he claims is the "federal largess" bestowed upon rural white Americans. This is so indicative of the vengeful nature of the Democrat party and their hatred of anyone who refuses to swallow their progressive agenda. Politifact shows their true colors by claiming that AOC's photo op from last month which became a hilarious meme was somehow "false" because she wasn't crying over a parking lot, it was actually a road. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Support Past Present on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/pastpresentpodcast Here are some links and references mentioned during this week’s show:  College admissions has long legally favored the wealthy, but “Operation Varsity Blues” has highlighted the illegal means to which some affluent people go to secure their children college admission. An attack by a white supremacist on a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, killed and wounded dozens of worshipers earlier this month. Niki recommended historian David Atkinson’s book, The Burden of White Supremacy: Containing Asian Migration in the British Empire and referred to Jean Raspail’s 1973 white-supremacist text, The Camp of the Saints. After much speculation, Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke has announced he is running for president in 2020. Natalia recommended this New Republic article on O’Rourke’s “profound emptiness” and Michelle Obama’s memoir, Becoming. Niki referred to David Sirota’s Guardian piece criticizing O’Rourke’s centrism.    In our regular closing feature, What’s Making History: Natalia discussed the work of physical culturalist Bernarr MacFadden, and the perils of taking decontextualized “inspiring lessons from history” at face value. Neil commented on Karen Zraick’s New York Times article, “Florida Republicans Push to Make Ex-Felons Pay Fees Before They Can Vote.” Niki talked about her upcoming appearance in a new documentary based on the popular Slow Burn

Recent historical scholarship stresses the transnational linkages between movements to restrict Asian migration in the Anglophone world. David Atkinson's The Burden of White Supremacy: Containing Asian Migration in the British Empire and the United States (UNC Press, 2016) offers an important revision to this literature by examining legal and social responses to Japanese and South Asian mobility in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and the U.S. between 1896 and 1924. Atkinson argues that, while these various geographies shared similar ideologies and motivations for restricting Asian mobility, local conditions—for example, economic conditions, proximity to Asia, structures of political governance, and the number of real vs. prospective Asian migrants—were far more determinative of exclusionary campaigns and policies. The resulting imperial discord and international tensions constituted the “burden of white supremacy.” In this conversation, Atkinson shares insights from this complex history, as well as his approach to researching and crafting a multi-national, multi-archival project.
