Over 350,000 African American men joined the United States military during World War I, serving valiantly despite discrimination and slander. Historian and civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois had hoped that their patriotism would help them gain respect and equality, but after the war it was quickly evident that would not be the case. Du Bois spent the next several decades attempting to tell the full story of Black soldiers in the Great War, but despite a vast archive of materials entrusted to him and his own towering intellect, Du Bois was never able to craft a coherent narrative of their participation.  Joining me in this episode to discuss Du Bois and his relationship with World War I is Dr. Chad L. WIlliams, the Samuel J. and Augusta Spector Professor of History and African and African American Studies at Brandeis University, and the author of The Wounded World: W. E. B. Du Bois and the First World War. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. In celebration of the first birthday of Into the Absurd, we dined virtually with artistic partners in life and theatrics, Sonja and David Robson. We talked about their first meeting in 1990 at an audition, their favorite theatrical project, Sonja's photography passion turned business, and David's memorable play critique from a star-studded playwriting panel in Alaska. David Robson is an award-winning playwright whose work for the stage has been hailed as "compelling", "forceful", and "gut-wrenching" by the New York Times, and "an important contribution to contemporary theater" by the Philadelphia Inquirer. His plays include BY THE EYE; WITHOUT CONSENT; BIRTHRIGHT (PlayPenn semi-finalist); CLAY WARRIOR; MULEHEADED; AFTER BIRTH OF A NATION (Best Delaware Playwright Award); PRICELESS; PLAYING THE ASSASSIN (Philadelphia Critics' Best Play Nomination); PLAYING LENI (co-written with John Stanton); A FEW SMALL REPAIRS; MAN MEASURES MAN (Barrymore Award nomination); and AFTER DENMARK. Work has been produced by TheaterWorks Hartford, Delaware Theatre Company, Penguin Rep, InterAct Theatre Company, Passage Theatre, and Act II Playhouse, among others. Robson was recently named Delaware's Best Playwright by Broadway World, and is recipient of the Hotel Obligado Audience Choice Award for New Work. Other honors include the Susan McIntyre Playwriting Award, the Panowski Playwriting Award (runner-up), and two playwriting fellowships and two grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts. Play development: Blank Theatre (Los Angeles), Bated Breath Theatre (Hartford, CT), Lark (NYC), White Pines Productions (Philadelphia, PA), City Theater Company (Wilmington, DE), Great Plains Theatre Conference (Omaha, NE), Last Frontier Theatre Conference (Valdez, AK), Rebel Theatre (NYC), and New Theatre (Coral Gables, FL). His plays and monologues are published by Smith and Kraus and Original Works Publishing. David is a member of the Dramatists' Guild, the Playwrights' Center, and is a former playwright in residence at the Lark Play Development Center in New York City. He is also the author of more than 20 books for young adults, including Shakespeare's Globe Theater, The Murder of Emmett Till, and The Black Arts Movement. He earned an MFA in creative writing from Goddard College, an MS in English Education from St. Joseph's University, and a BA in Communications from Temple University. He is a professor of English at Delaware County Community College, where he was awarded the Gould Award for Teaching Excellent in 2010.(https://www.davidrobsonplay.org/)Sonja Robson fell in love with photography as a teen when her big brother Millard guided her in purchasing the Minolta seen in this photo. She lived in Sweden most of her young life and moved to the States after graduating high school. She drifted a bit and later on received her BFA in Theatre at U of The Arts, however, she's always been more of a visual artist than a lover of fancy words. After many art classes (digital and otherwise) as well as photography classes, she inherited a collection of cameras and lenses from her photographer brother, Bill, and realized that she found her passion once again. She has an eye for detail and love to try to capture that intangible something that makes a person unique. Sonja was born in New York and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. She has been performing both on stage and film since 1990. She received her BFA in Acting from The University of The Arts. She has worked at many local theatres, including The Wilma, New City Stage, The Walnut and The Lantern. In 1998 she received a Supporting Actress Barrymore nomination for her role in The Lover/A Kind of Alaska at The Walnut, and she has also been seen in numerous local and national commercials. Sonja was last seen in The Bald Soprano at The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium in February 2020. We talk about The Expanse and the merits of hard sci-fi with scientist and sci-fi writer Catherine Asaro, rocket scientist Jack Clemons, and Baltimore skeptic Bruce Press. Catherine Asaro has written more than 25 books in science fiction, fantasy, and near-future thrillers. She earned her doctorate in chemical physics and master’s in physics, both at Harvard. Her works The Quantum Rose and The Spacetime Pool are both Nebula® Award winners. Among her other distinctions, she is a multiple winner of the AnLab from Analog Magazine and the RT BOOKClub Award for “Best Science Fiction Novel.” Her most recent books are Undercity (Baen) and Lighting Strike, Book II. Her latest book, The Bronzed Skies, came out from Baen in 2016. A former ballet and jazz dancer, Catherine has performed on both coasts and in Ohio. As a musician, she performs at various cons and jazz clubs. She has appeared at cons and other venues as a Guest of Honor or author guest in the US and abroad. Jack Clemons is a former Lockheed Martin engineering executive and a degreed “rocket scientist”. He was an engineer and team leader on NASA's Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs. He has given talks across the Mid-Atlantic region on the Apollo Moon Program, on the design and first flights of the NASA Space Shuttle, and on the subject of Why Science Matters. He also appeared in the "Command Module" segment of "Moon Machines," the Discovery Science Channel's award-winning six-part documentary about the Apollo Program. He’s a published science fiction author and a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and he writes a space and science column for the new Amazing Stories Magazine print edition. His works of fiction have earned him an Established Artist Fellowship for Literary Fiction by the Delaware Division of the Arts. "Safely to Earth: The Men and Women Who Brought the Astronauts Home", his book about his time on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs, will be released this September. Bruce Press spent 30 years as a Computer Engineer and regrets none of it. Except for all the time he didn't spend as a photographer. He is a husband to one and a father to many (or so it seems). When he is not creating images or video, he is working to promote science, critical thinking, podcasts and the idea that everyone on this planet will be equally screwed if we don't pull it together. How Can You Make Your Home More Energy Efficient?

How can you make your home more energy efficient? Making your home more energy efficient doesn’t have to be a difficult task. In fact, it’s easier than you might think. Also, making your home more energy efficient can add value to it. By visiting the Delaware Division of Energy and Climate online, you’ll find a list of contractors you can use to take your first step: getting an energy audit. These professionals will come into your home and search it for sources of wasted energy—like leaking air conditioning ducts. Leaking ducts can actually cause up to a 15% loss of your AC. “Making your home more energy efficient can add value.” They’ll also check your doors and windows for aging. These features, in some cases, may need to be replaced if they are causing AC or heating to leak from your home. Your attic space may need to be updated. This could include adding insulation. Also, while it won’t increase the value of your home, adding solar panels to your property absolutely helps your home to become more energy efficient. If you have any other questions or would like more information, feel free to give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
