In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Diana Lutfi, a bioethics and legal scholar, who recently authored an amicus brief on behalf of the detransitioners community in the Supreme Court case, United States of America v. Jonathan Skrmetti. We dive deep into the implications of this landmark case, which challenges Tennessee's prohibition on “gender-affirming care” for minors. Diana explains how this case could set a precedent affecting similar laws in 26 states, raising critical questions about the future of sex trait modification. We discuss the complexities surrounding the concept of "standards of care" in pediatric gender treatment, particularly how these standards can be influenced by political agendas rather than solid evidence. Diana emphasizes the importance of recognizing biological differences in healthcare and the inherent discrimination that occurs in medical treatment based on sex. We also explore the tension between parental rights, state regulations, and the autonomy of minors in making life-altering decisions.Throughout our conversation, we aim to uncover the broader implications of this case for healthcare policy and the ethical considerations surrounding permanent sex trait alteration for minors. Join us as we navigate these challenging topics and seek to understand the stakes involved for individuals and families facing these critical decisions.Read the amicus brief here.Donate to support Diana's work.Diana Lutfi, JD, MSHCM, CPHQ is a legal and bioethics scholar, healthcare professional, and advocate of patients' and providers' rights. During the pandemic, Diana successfully challenged and changed Colorado Nursing Board rules, decreasing the red tape around reinstatements. Diana has avidly worked to protect patients' rights amidst healthcare policy, helped physicians write policy proposals, and most recently authored a Supreme Court amicus on behalf of the larger detransitioners community. In her professional career, Diana was a human subjects researcher, healthcare administrator, educator, and projects consultant. In this episode, I sit down with Warren Smith, a passionate educator and critical thinker, who gained viral attention for his thought-provoking dialogue in which he used Socratic dialogue to question a student's belief that “J.K. Rowling is transphobic.” We dive deep into the importance of teaching critical thinking skills in today's educational landscape, where echo chambers and social media often stifle independent thought. How can we encourage students to think for themselves amidst a flood of content and opinions?Warren shares his experiences as a multimedia teacher, revealing the innovative ways he helps students become comfortable on camera and articulate their thoughts. But what happens when the very framework of education is challenged by administrative pressures and societal expectations? We explore the obstacles he faced in fostering a culture of open dialogue and critical inquiry. As we discuss the implications of his viral video, Warren reflects on the repercussions it had on his career. Did he anticipate the fallout, and how did it change his teaching environment? We also touch on the broader cultural shifts in education and the challenges of navigating a landscape that often prioritizes conformity over creativity. What does the future hold for educators who dare to challenge the status quo? Warren also turns the tables and interviews me, offering me an opportunity to articulate how I built my podcast, how my thoughts on gender ideology have taken shape over the past several years, and where my attitude toward the mental health profession currently stands.Warren Smith is the founder of the Secret Scholars on YouTube. Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

In recent months, we are hearing more and more stories of detransitioners who are renouncing and speaking out about their prior self-identification of being transgender. Research in the journal, Archives of Sexual Behavior, reports on interviews with seventy-eight individuals from the United States, ages eighteen to thirty-three who had stopped identifying as transgender at least six months prior to the interview. Their average age for first identifying as transgender was seventeen point one years of age, and they had done so for an average of five point four years before detransitioning. Eighty three percent had taken steps to transition socially, and sixty-eight percent had taken at least one medical step. Most reported that they had embraced the ideology because of prior mental health issues and trauma. They report better psychological health since detransitioning. These stories are becoming more widespread, and we shouldn't be surprised.

Jane Wise is a certified addictions counselor who, like me, provides both individual and group support for parents of ROGD kids. After learning that parents who questioned their children's gender identity were not only lacking in support, but were being called bigots and transphobes just for worrying about their kids, Jane decided to use her skills as a group counselor to help provide a space for them to support each other. In this episode, we compare and contrast our approaches to helping ROGD parents, work that occupies relatively new and uncharted territory in a cultural and political landscape that remains hostile toward the concerns of both parents and mental health professionals. Jane shares her personal evolution from a staunch supporter of the trans movement to a critical observer, shedding light on the struggles faced by parents navigating rapid onset gender dysphoria in their children. The episode touches on the delicate balance between offering support and avoiding enabling harmful decisions, drawing parallels between addiction dynamics and gender identity exploration. We discuss the emotional turmoil experienced by parents, the impact of societal pressures, and the importance of maintaining hope amidst uncertainty. We explore the concept of motivational interviewing and its application in guiding parents through difficult conversations with their children. Still, there's been lots of confusion among youth workers and parents regarding the issue of gender, leading many to misguide kids in deeply damaging ways. Now, a growing number of detransitioners are speaking out from their own experience about the insidious and damaging transgender ideology. Detransitioners' experience reveals that there's more complexity and pain involved in that category than most people will ever guess. The number of teens and pre-teens persuaded they were born with the wrong body has exploded. Goaded by a toxic online “community” and assisted by teachers, doctors, and even their own parents, they are promptly set on the path of puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gruesome “gender-affirming” surgeries.Media and activists insist that “transitioning” is the happy ending to these stories. But countless young people bear terrible emotional and physical scars. Adding to their anguish, the transgender community that once embraced them now wants to keep them quiet. Now one fearless reporter, Mary Margaret Olohan, shares their stories. Based on in-depth personal interviews, Detrans exposes the unconscionable abuse these detransitioners have endured—manipulative therapy sessions, mental and emotional anguish, botched surgeries, and attempts to construct phantom body parts. Their testimonies reveal a truth so disturbing that transgender activists will do anything to hide it.Detrans is indispensable evidence of the life-shattering power of gender ideology. “Medical care should be objective, but this is completely ideologically compromised.” ~Camille Kiefel “An increasing number of women and men are moving forward after spending significant time identifying as “transgender.” Name and pronoun changes, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries have had a profound effect on their lives. While the label of “detransitioner” is commonly used to describe them, the term is a misnomer: there is no way to reverse time or the impacts of these psychologically, socially, and physically life-changing experiences.”… Continue Reading

The Bible's words saying "God made them male and female" for centuries had been upheld by the scientific community, that is up until just a few years ago. In today's woke culture, gender dysphoria, a mental health problem, has spurred many young people into surgeries that they later regret. Once celebrated for expressing their "true self" as transgender male or female, they are often attacked when they realize they made the wrong decision and begin the arduous journey of de-transitioning. Jennifer Lahl is telling their stories. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Lahl talks about her new book, "The Detransition Diaries",  the saga of eight men and women who once felt they were born in the wrong body, and then realized the solution to their struggles were more spiritual than physical. Lahl is the founder and former President of The Center For Bioethics And Culture as well as an award-winning documentary maker producing several films, including the one the book is based on: "The Detransition Diaries: Saving Our Sisters". Sara Stockton is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, lecturer, researcher, and clinical supervisor of a psychotherapy practice in New York who has done a complete 180 on the subject of youth gender transition. Ms. Stockton spent the first part of her career advocating for “gender affirming care” in the treatment of trans-identified youth. Starting in 2008, her work with this population included traveling to teach and train medical facilities, physicians, and schools on “gender affirmation.” In 2013, she co-authored one of the first mental health assessments in the US utilized to assess youth “readiness” for gender transition. She treated over 100 families, and wrote many of the first letters that were used to approve gender transition surgeries on minors, before a change of perspective shifted the focus of her work. More recently, she was featured in the documentary “What is a Woman,” where she decided to speak out about her moments of doubt and realizations, and her decision to raise awareness about the pitfalls of this approach. She has also been interviewed by Jordan Peterson and on Gender: A Wider Lens.In this episode, Sara shares her journey from being a young graduate student specializing in gender issues to her eventual shift in focus towards sex therapy. We discuss the lack of historical context and critical examination of the treatment protocols for transgender-identified youth; the pressure to conform to a specific narrative without questioning the long-term consequences; and ways in which young therapists' naïveté, openness, and eagerness to prove themselves can all be utilized to further an agenda that might more easily be recognized as sinister by more grounded individuals.Sara opens up about the ethical dilemmas she encountered, including the issue of informed consent and the pressure to prescribe irreversible medical interventions to young people. We explore the concept of autogynephilia and its implications for understanding the motivations behind gender identity. We touch on the hyper-sexualization of youth in the context of gender issues; the links between sexual deviance and the “trans” movement; and the challenges of navigating discussions around sexuality and intimacy with young clients.Sara shares a pivotal moment in her career when she encountered a detransitioner and realized the lack of support and resources available for those who regret their medical transition. We discuss the vulnerability of individuals during times of personal struggle and the potential for manipulation and exploitation. This episode raises important questions about the need for a more nuanced and critical approach to gender issues. Join us as we delve into these complex topics and challenge the prevailing narratives surrounding trans-identified youth. Over the course of the last couple of years, I, like you, have seen countless television commercials for law firms inviting viewers to engage in lawsuits for a variety of causes, many times because of exposure to contaminants at Camp LeJeune, or for illnesses like Mesothelioma. I've often times turned to my wife to tell her that we are not far from seeing the same kinds of ads pop up for those who were encouraged and perhaps forced into gender transitioning steps by parents, medical doctors, educators, and others. The reality is that several suits are now in progress, and there are law firms working to announce their willingness to represent detransitioners who want to sue those who lied about the dangers of these medical interventions. Parents, this reminds us of our need to not only advocate for our kids with sensibility, but to do so from a biblical perspective. At creation, God made two genders, and he has created all people to live into the gender that was given at conception.

A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted on Monday. The country is home to nearly three dozen active volcano sites and a rich mythological history.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not popular. But since October 7, his government's military action in Gaza has enjoyed wide support, even among the left. "Detransitioners" — people who transition or begin treatment and then reverse care — wield a lot of influence in shaping conservative transgender laws. How representative are they of a wider movement? Hollywood's year of WGA and SAG strikes, streaming struggles, and big-budget flops is raising questions about how the industry will adjust.

Today's guest is very meaningful to me and probably requires no introduction. Dr. Heather Heying is the reason I know about detransitioners and am doing half the things I'm doing. An evolutionary biologist and animal behaviorist, world traveler, podcast co-host, writer, mentor to many, mother of two, agreeable contrarian, and all-around interesting person, Dr. Heying can easily be considered one of the greatest thinkers of our time.It was tough to narrow down what to focus on in a conversation with someone so influential, so I selected a few of the recurring themes that form the foundational principles for much of her work. We discuss the concepts of culture and consciousness, and how they shape our understandings of progress and tradition, liberalism and conservatism. We delve into the metaphorical idea of Chesterton's fence, which represents the importance of understanding the purpose and value of something before discarding it. And we examine several “Chesterton's fences” in modern life that have been impacted by what Heather often calls “hyper-novelty.” What do we lose when we stop sitting around a campfire together, telling stories and making music?Heather Heying is an evolutionary biologist who earned her PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan, has been a visiting Fellow at Princeton University, and was a tenured professor at The Evergreen State College. She has been invited to speak about science, higher ed, the evolution of sex and consciousness, and the culture wars, in venues as varied as the U.S. Department of Justice, the Krishnamurti Institute, Joe Rogan, and Oxford University. Her first book, Antipode, is based on her life in Madagascar while studying the sex lives of poison frogs. Her second book, co-authored with husband Bret Weinstein, is A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century: Evolution and the Challenges of Modern Life. A New York Times best-seller, the book provides an evolutionary toolkit for living a good and honorable life as a modern ape. She also writes Natural Selections on Substack, the Field Notes column for County Highway, and co-hosts with Bret a popular weekly livestream on the DarkHorse podcast.Natural Selections blogDarkHorse PodcastX @HeatherEHeyingHeather's books are available in my bookshop or via the embedded Amazon affiliate links. Chris Elston became an activist for the public awareness of child sex “transitions” more than three years ago. He's been harassed, attacked, and even suffered a broken arm for the message on his billboard: “Children cannot consent to puberty blockers.” In this conversation with Peter Boghossian, Chris explains how the public reception of his message has changed alongside increasing awareness about the myths promoted by gender ideologues. Peter and Chris compare notes on their techniques for engaging strangers in controversial discussions in the public square. Chris shares various arguments he frequently hears from gender activists and how he addresses them. Peter highlights his use of the “real reason check” in Spectrum Street Epistemology to get to the foundation of a belief. They also discuss the difficulty people have changing their minds in real time, the coercive influence of tribal thinking, and who will be held accountable for medical malpractice on children. Chris briefly mentions the new Dutch documentary about the history of the Dutch Protocol for gender transition.  This podcast was filmed October 30, 2023 at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship Conference in London, England.Billboard Chris on X and InstagramPrevious discussions with Billboard Chris:“Moving the Needle on Gender Ideology” (Billboard Chris, Andy Ngo, and others) “Nearly Impossible Conversations” (Billboard Chris & James Klug) Law firm for Detransitioners

Today, we're joined again by detransitioner Laura Perry Smalts, author of "Transgender to Transformed: A Story of Transition That Will Truly Set You Free," to continue her testimony of how she went from believing she was a man to embracing her womanhood under Christ. Laura shares the timeline of her hormone "treatments," double mastectomy and hysterectomy, and the moment she realized that these surgeries and treatments wouldn't actually make her a man. We discuss the common claim made by "trans" people that they are truly happier after transitioning and the truth that it's often a lie to keep up appearances and convince themselves of the lie. Laura shares her heartbreak at realizing she had lost the opportunity to have children and how God ultimately reached her at her lowest. We talk about the dignity in biblical womanhood, God's love for women, and how these truths led Laura to accept who God made her to be. We also share some advice on how to approach loved ones who think they're trans. Today we're talking with Scott Newgent, founder of TReVoices and outspoken advocate against child transgender "treatments." Most famously, Scott was an interviewee in Matt Walsh's documentary "What Is a Woman?" where she surprised audiences by being a "trans man" standing up against the trans agenda. Scott shares her story of deciding to transition, from being affirmed that she was a man later in life to getting multiple surgeries that have now left her in a complicated health situation. We talk about the activist business model and why she believes the trans agenda is far different from pre-2015, when people were advocating for the legalization of gay marriage. We cover whether she regrets transitioning and why she doesn't care what pronouns people use for her. This dynamic discussion covers a wide range of topics, including Katie's experiences and observations over the past two decades as a lesbian in the queer / LGBTQ+ community, especially pertaining to trans identities. They also explore Katie's reflections from her influential 2017 article on detransitioners, The Detransitioners: They Were Transgender, Until They Weren't, and how her perspective on gender has evolved in the aftermath of its publication. The conversation even delves into repressed memories, different approaches to psychotherapy, nonbinary identities, and the particularly interesting, important and controversial topic - preferred pronouns.
