Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 27th December. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. UNVEILING OF THE ELECTRIC SILVERADO PICKUP WILL BE ONLINE - Each year, hundreds of companies, including the world's top automakers, travel to Las Vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to show off their latest products. But the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of last year's in-person events. - One of the most anticipated events was that automaker General Motors was to reveal its new fully electric Silverado pickup for the first time. But those plans have now been scrapped due to lingering covid concerns. - GM Chief Executive Mary Barra had been scheduled to give a keynote speech at the annual conference on Jan. 5, where the electric Silverado pickup truck was to be revealed for the first time. The press conference and keynote will now be presented remotely, - The electric Silverado will go into production late next year at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. The fully-electric truck will have a range of more than 400 miles on a full charge, according to GM. Original Source : https://www.futurecar.com/5088/General-Motors-Cancels-its-In-Person-CES-Events-and-Unveiling-of-the-Electric-Silverado-Pickup-Due-to-Covid-Concerns VCS SAY 2022 IS THE YEAR THE ELECTRIC CAR GOES MAINSTREAM - Venture capitalists watching the electric-car business say that 2022 is when the rubber meets the road. - adoption in the US is lagging, EVs could account for about one-third of light-vehicle sales here by 2030, the industry expert IHS Markit predicted in August. - Whether automakers have electric-vehicle success next year could dictate the trajectory of EV penetration in the US moving forward. Here are three things that VCs say you can expect next year. - It's a golden moment for EVs, said Greg Reichow, partner at Eclipse Ventures in Palo Alto, California. - Customers and investors are awaiting the first deliveries of the electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup, which has nearly 200,000 reservations. Deliveries of the GMC Hummer pickup will continue well into the new year. And reports say the Cadillac Lyriq SUV should reach customers in early 2022. - "Initially, we had large statements about big investments, and there were questions in the market about how serious are people going to take this," said Gabe Cunningham, principal at Fontinalis Partners in Detroit. "It became apparent that those big investments were backed by executives and that they were truly serious about diving into electric vehicles." - Car companies now have to seek out ways to make these far-reaching promises happen. They need to secure the lithium and other rare-earth materials necessary for millions of electric-vehicle batteries. - Despite the mix of electric products expected from both legacy automakers and startups next year, some of the nascent companies could realize they've met their match with their more established competitors — and the reality of an industry with massive overhead costs — said Alexei Andreev, managing director AutoTech Ventures in Menlo Park, California. - The industry has already seen a reckoning as it relates to EV startups. Companies like Faraday Future, Nikola Motors, and Lordstown have experienced troubles, not unlike Tesla did in its early days. Original Source : https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-2022-electric-car-predictions-ford-lightning-rivian-hummer-2021-12 THE ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN THAT SAVED CHRISTMAS - Whatever side of the great EV debate you fall on, the benefits of electrified transport to short-haul, multi-drop carriers making 100-plus deliveries per day must be considerable. Zero noise (technically, drivers should turn off their engines when delivering to you, but few do), lower pollution and, from a driver's point of view, ease of operation, with no clutch pedal or gearshift to contend with 1000 times a day. And that's before you factor in the cost of diesel at an all-time high. - Amazon announced it was buying 1800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz to supplement its European delivery fleet, and in the UK, DPD has just bought 100 new e-vans, taking its electric fleet to 600 vehicles in total. - We've chosen the e-Dispatch from the mid-size van class because of its competitive pricing (starting from £28,250 after the government's £6000 plug-in grant), a one-tonne payload and a class-topping 205-mile WLTP range. - we're unlikely to cover more than 30 miles today making the 80 deliveries we've loaded; even with 100-plus drops, that's unlikely to rise much above 50 miles. And while some drivers will cover up to 70 miles in a day with deliveries further afield, none would be compromised by this van's range on a full charge. - The Citroën e-Dispatch starts at £28,250 for the short-wheelbase XS Enterprise model with a smaller, 50kWh battery, which trades 350mm in load length and some standard equipment, compared with our top-flight medium-wheelbase test van with its 75kWh battery, costing £45,701 after the grant. Original Source : http://www.china.org.cn/china/Off_the_Wire/2021-12/25/content_77952384.htm INSIDE AUSTRALIA'S GROWING PIRATE ELECTRIC CAR MARKET - Australia's slow uptake of electric vehicles has led to the spread of a cottage industry in parallel imports, with small businesses springing up to bring in low-cost second-hand cars from Japan. - Ben Lippa, a self-described rev head, founded his import business J-Spec just over 22 years ago to import highly modified “drift” cars to Australia, but today finds many of his customers are electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf, which is no longer imported to Australia by its maker. - In Yackandandah in north-east Victoria, Russell Klose, who once imported cars and parts from a business in Albury-Wodonga, has come out of retirement with his son Cam and friend Matt Grogan for the same reason. - They have formed Kilowatt Cars, and are now waiting on a licence to begin to sell low-priced second-hand electric cars also sourced from Japan. Located in Hamtramck, Michigan, Factory ZERO is touted as GM's first fully dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant. Factory Zero is actually a retooled version of GM's old Detroit-Hamtramck, plant that was built in 1985, and cranked out over 3 million General Motors vehicles. GM says Factory Zero is "one of the most modern automotive plants in the country." Jeff also discusses his unique role as one of 50 esteemed jurors who get to choose the annual winners for The North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards (NACTOY)These prestigious awards are judged by a jury of 50 professional automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. Jeff explains that the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) Awards are all about honoring excellence in innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, and value. The awards were created in 1994 and are the longest-running new-vehicle awards not associated with a single publication, website, radio, or television station. In other words, they're a really big deal and Jeff Gilbert is one of the 50 jurors!Follow Jeff Gilbert on Twitter: @jefferygilbertNorth American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) online: https://northamericancaroftheyear.org/about-nactoy/In case you had not heard, you can now listen to all our episodes on Spotify! It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   GM ANNOUNCES ELECTRIC CHEVY SILVERADO PICKUP "General Motors announced Tuesday that it will produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado truck, with an estimated driving range of more than 400 miles on a single charge."  reports CNN Business: "The truck will join an increasingly crowded field of competitors from established automakers like Ford (F), which has already said it will make electric version of its F-Series pickup, as well as startups, such as Tesla (TSLA), with the Cybertruck, and Rivian, with the R1T. The new electric Silverado will not be a modified version of the gasoline- or diesel-powered truck equipped with batteries and electric motors. Instead, it will be engineered from the beginning as an electric-only truck, GM said, using the same Ultium electric vehicle engineering that will underlie many of the automaker's future electric vehicles, including the GMC Hummer EV models and the Cadllac Lyriq SUV."   "The company did not immediately say when the electric Silverado will go on sale, but GM president Mark Reuss said at an event on Tuesday that the company will also make commercial fleet-focused versions of the truck. GM has been teasing an electric Silverado for months now. It previously said it may not release a pickup EV until mid-decade and hadn’t officially announced the truck was coming until Tuesday." according to The Verge: "The electric Silverado will be made at “Factory Zero,” the recently rebranded Detroit-Hamtramck plant dedicated to EVs and AVs that GM is currently retooling at a cost of more than $2 billion. It’s the same plant where GM will build the all-electric Hummer SUV and Hummer pickup. The Silverado is so important to GM that it’s currently selling versions of the truck that are missing a microchip that helps improve fuel economy thanks to the global semiconductor shortage."   "Shares of General Motors closed at a new record Tuesday after the automaker confirmed plans to produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at an assembly plant for EVs that’s under construction in Detroit. The electric Silverado is part of a previously announced $2.2 billion investment in the plant to produce an array of its next-generation EVs" says CNBC: "he new vehicles are part of GM’s plan to release 30 new EVs globally by 2025 under a $27 billion investment in electric and autonomous vehicles during that time frame. The company plans to sell at least 1 million EVs annually by then."   https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/06/success/gm-electric-chevy-silverado-pickup/index.html   https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/6/22370058/gm-chevy-electric-silverado-pickup-truck   https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/06/gm-shares-hit-new-record-on-plans-for-electric-chevy-silverado-pickup.html   DID POLESTAR JUST TEASE A HOTTER VERSION OF THE POLESTAR 2 EV? "Polestar is Volvo’s sporty and electrified arm and it currently has one pure-EV in its lineup, the Polestar 2. It’s about as close a rival as we currently have to the Tesla Model 3, although it’s not quite as quick as the Model 3 Performance. Well, that could change with a more aggressive performance version of the Polestar 2, which appears to be what the CEO of Polestar seems to have hinted at via a couple of recent Instagram posts." says InsideEVs; "Thomas Ingenlath posted two photos of what appears to be a sportier version of the Polestar 2 EV. How can we tell? Well, the car clearly sits lower on its suspension and it looks like it’s riding on wheels borrowed from the more exclusive Polestar 1 (albeit completely blacked out). The front bumper is also different - the lower part is painted in the body color. The plastic cladding around the wheel arches is also finished in the body color and with the bumper, the black wheels and the visibly lower ride height, it looks like a far more focused vehicle than the standard car".   https://insideevs.com/news/499218/polestar2-performance-hot-version-teaser-ceo/   VOLKSWAGEN MEB-BASED ELECTRIC CARS WILL BE V2G FROM 2022 "During its Power Day in March, Volkswagen said it was moving ahead with vehicle to grid (V2G) bi-directional battery charging technology. Now it’s official. In an interview with Handelsblatt this week, Volkswagen board member Thomas Ulbricht said, “The test vehicles are running. We are in the last [phases] with the preparations.”" reports CleanTechnica: "Beginning in January, 2022, every electric car from the Volkswagen Group that uses the MEB electrical platform — that includes cars from Audi, Skoda, and Seat-Cupra — will be able to not only charge from the electrical grid but also able to return electricity to the grid on demand. Ulbricht explains that expanded business models relating to the battery are just one component of a much more fundamental change in the automotive industry that will be triggered by digitization. Volkswagen sees itself monetizing all that stored electricity by making it available to utility companies and grid operators. Some of the income would go to the owners of the cars. Handelsblatt says in the final analysis, automakers may have the upper hand. They provide the warranty coverage for those batteries and can adjust their warranties to favor the use of their own networks."   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/04/06/all-volkswagen-meb-based-electric-cars-will-be-v2g-capable-beginning-in-2022/   SALES OF NISSAN E-POWER ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES IN JAPAN SURPASSES 500,000 "Nissan announced that cumulative sales of vehicles with its e-POWER electrified powertrain (earlier post) surpassed 500,000 units at the end of March. The e-POWER system uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to generate electricity for the electric motor that propels the vehicle. For customers, this delivers EV-like excitement, quietness and smooth acceleration, but with the confidence and convenience that comes with a fuel tank, and without the need to plug in to recharge." according to Green Car Congress: "e-POWER made its debut in Japan on the Note compact car in November 2016. In February 2021, the all-new Nissan Qashqai recently debuted in the European market with an e-POWER model announced following the mild-hybrid model, marking the first offering of e-POWER in the continent."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/04/20210406-epower.html   NISSAN CUTS COST OF LEAF TO QUALIFY FOR PLUG-IN GRANT "Price reductions for the 40kWh and 62kWh versions of the Nissan Leaf have been announced to ensure the electric vehicle (EV) qualifies for the plug-in car grant. All grades of the Nissan Leaf and both battery capacities (40kWh and 62kWh) are now eligible for the revised grant, with pricing now starting from £25,995 OTR (including the Government grant of £2,500)." writes Fleet News: "Peugeot revised pricing for all e-2008 models and enhanced deposit contributions for the e-208 range in response to the grant cut.  Peugeot’s price cut came after Vauxhall reduced the prices of its Mokka-e and Vivaro-e so that all its electric models are eligible for the revised plug-in grant.  Fellow Stellantis brand Citroen confirmed price cuts to its new e-C4 model following the changes to the grant.  BMW also announced it was cutting the cost of its i3 electric car last week, to ensure customers can still take advantage of the Government’s plug-in grant."   https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/latest-fleet-news/electric-fleet-news/2021/04/06/nissan-cuts-cost-of-leaf-to-qualify-for-plug-in-grant   UK EV REGISTRATIONS CONTINUE THEIR RISE UK new car registrations ‘grow’ for first time since August – up 11.5% – but remain -36.9% adrift of 10-year March average. The shift to new technologies is continuing, however, with plug-in vehicle demand reaching its highest ever volume. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) took a combined market share of 13.9%, up from 7.3% last year as the number of models available to customers increased from 72 to 116. Registrations of BEVs increased by 88.2% to 22,003 units, while PHEVs rose by 152.2% to 17,330. Show #842   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 18th July 2020. Welcome to a new Patreon PRODUCER NIKLAS NORRSÉN   NEW YORK TO INVEST $750 MILLION TO EXPAND ELECTRIC-VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE "New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced an investment program that would allocate $750 million to build charging stations and other electric-vehicle infrastructure as part of the state's long-term goal to reduce emissions. The measure is set to create more than 50,000 charging stations and will largely be funded by the state's investor-owned utility companies, with the total budget capped at $701 million through 2025." reports Autoblog: "An additional $48.8 million is allocated from a 2017 settlement with German carmaker Volkswagen AG over its diesel emissions cheating scandal to fund electric school and transit buses, as well as charging stations. New York's announcement comes on the heels of a similar measure by Florida, which on July 10 announced an $8.6 million investment to expand charging stations."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/17/new-york-to-invest-750-million-to-expand-electric-vehicle-infrastructure/   RENAULT ZOE VAN REVEALED AS PRACTICAL SMALL EV WITH 245-MILE RANGE "Created by applying modest modifications to the Zoe road car – most notably opaque rear windows and the removal of the rear seats to form a flat load area – the Zoe Van will be powered by the same 52kWh battery pack and 107bhp R110 electric motor. Its range is rated at 245 miles per charge under the WLTP test cycle, allowing for a 50% payload and 75kg driver."£ says Autocar: "Prices without VAT but with the plug-in van grant start at £19,380 and rise to £20,995, highlighting the business savings over the Zoe road car, which starts from £28,795 with VAT and prior to the application of the electric vehicle grant."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/renault-zoe-van-revealed-practical-small-ev-245-mile-range   UK COULD BAN NON-ELECTRIC NEW CAR SALES BY 2030, SAYS SHELL "Royal Dutch Shell expects the UK can end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles in just a decade, as the nation attempts to eliminate emissions by the middle of the century." accordin to WorldOil.com: "The ban can be brought forward to 2030 with “the right policy and incentives,” Sinead Lynch, the head of oil giant Shell’s operations in Britain said on LinkedIn. That’s five years earlier than the deadline set by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in February, and also beats the 2032 date that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said may be possible to achieve. Europe’s biggest oil companies have been preparing for a slowdown in fuels demand, and are increasingly turning their attention to electricity production"   https://www.worldoil.com/news/2020/7/17/uk-could-ban-non-electric-new-car-sales-by-2030-says-shell   DS TO FOCUS ON BEV & PHEV AS OF 2025 "The electrification strategy of the PSA brand DS Automobiles provides for an even stronger orientation towards e-mobility: From 2025, DS intends to offer only fully electric models and plug-in hybrids." says electrive: "Currently, the French have a pure electric car in their range with the DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE, which takes over the drive technology from the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208. DS 4 E-TENSE is to be presented before the end of this year. At the beginning of June it was announced that a DS model will be built at Opel in Rüsselsheim from 2021 – according to reports, this will be the DS 4. Although the model is to be based on the larger EMP2 platform (which is currently offered at most as a PHEV), an electric motor with 100 kW output and a 50 kWh battery are mentioned as probable technical data."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/17/ds-to-focus-on-bev-phev-as-of-2025/   ITALY’S BEV SALES DOUBLED IN FIRST HALF OF 2020 "Italy’s EV market is finally getting hot. Following months of unprecedented growth and despite an incredibly adverse time in history, electric mobility has now reached the halfway point of this infamous year with outstanding figures, doubling sales from 2019. And the most important aspect is, we haven’t seen anything yet." reports CleanTechnica: "Market share of hybrid and fully electric cars lags behind that of other European nations such as the UK, France, and Germany, let alone Scandinavian countries. market share of fully electric cars now stands at 1.7%. the Italian BEV market from booming in the first six months of 2020, doubling year over year to about 10,000 units."   Zoe, Smart ForTwo, e-Up! the Top 3.   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/17/italys-bev-sales-doubled-in-first-half-of-2020-the-only-way-is-up/   PORSCHE DELIVERED 4,480 TAYCAN ELECTRIC CARS IN FIRST HALF OF 2020 "The first deliveries of the Taycan started late last year, and therefore, 2020 is the first full year of production and deliveries for Porsche’s first all-electric car, with 4,480 deliveries during the first half of 2020." says Electrek: "Aside from the pandemic, another thing that could have affected Taycan sales in the first half of the year is that the Taycan 4S, the cheaper version of the electric sedan, arrived just a few months ago. Furthermore, Porsche recently announced the RWD version of the Taycan, which will bring the base price even lower. However, the German automaker has only confirmed deliveries of that version for the Chinese market so far."   https://electrek.co/2020/07/17/porsche-taycan-electric-car-first-half-2020/   GENERAL MOTORS PROVIDES DETAILS FOR LINE OF FUTURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES Beginning in 2020, GM’s EV portfolio will begin to expand with launches by Chevrolet, GMC and Buick. Show #717   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 5th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.     GM REVEALS NEW EVS, BATTERY TECH AND PLATFORM GM said today: "The heart of GM’s strategy is a modular propulsion system and a highly flexible, third-generation global EV platform powered by proprietary Ultium batteries. They will allow the company to compete for nearly every customer in the market today, whether they are looking for affordable transportation, a luxury experience, work trucks or a high-performance machine"   ULTIUM BATTERIES AND PROPULSION SYSTEM HIGHLIGHTS   GM’s new Ultium batteries are unique in the industry because the large-format, pouch-style cells can be stacked vertically or horizontally inside the battery pack. This allows engineers to optimize battery energy storage and layout for each vehicle design.   Ultium energy options range from 50 to 200 kWh, which could enable a GM-estimated range up to 400 miles or more on a full charge with 0 to 60 mph acceleration as low as 3 seconds. Motors designed in-house will support front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and performance all-wheel drive applications.   Ultium-powered EVs are designed for Level 2 and DC fast charging. Most will have 400-volt battery packs and up to 200 kW fast-charging capability while our truck platform will have 800-volt battery packs and 350 kW fast-charging capability.   GM’s flexible, modular approach to EV development will drive significant economies of scale and create new revenue opportunities, including:   Continuous Improvement in Battery Costs: GM’s joint venture with LG Chem will drive battery cell costs below $100/kWh. The cells use a proprietary low cobalt chemistry and ongoing technological and manufacturing breakthroughs will drive costs even lower.   Flexibility: GM’s all-new global platform is flexible enough to build a wide range of trucks, SUVs, crossovers, cars and commercial vehicles with outstanding design, performance, packaging, range and affordability.   Capital Efficiency: GM can spend less capital to scale its EV business because it is able to leverage existing property, including land, buildings, tools and production equipment such as body shops and paint shops.   Complexity Reduction: The vehicle and propulsion systems were designed together to minimize complexity and part counts beyond today’s EVs, which are less complex than conventional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. For example, GM plans 19 different battery and drive unit configurations initially, compared with 550 internal combustion powertrain combinations available today.   Rising Customer Acceptance: Third-party forecasters expect U.S. EV volumes to more than double from 2025 to 2030 to about 3 million units on average. GM believes volumes could be materially higher as more EVs are launched in popular segments, charging networks grow and the total cost of ownership to consumers continues to fall.   New Sources of Revenue: By vertically integrating the manufacture of battery cells, the company can reach beyond its own fleet and license technology to others.   The first generation of GM’s future EV program will be profitable. The initial programs will pave the way for further accretive growth. GM’s technology can be scaled to meet customer demand much higher than the more than 1 million global sales the company expects mid-decade.   UPCOMING LAUNCHES AND REVEALS   Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick will all be launching new EVs starting this year. The next new Chevrolet EV will be a new version of the Bolt EV, launching in late 2020, followed by the 2022 Bolt EUV, launching Summer 2021. The Bolt EUV will be the first vehicle outside of the Cadillac brand to feature Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology for the highway, which GM will expand to 22 vehicles by 2023, including 10 by next year.   The Cruise Origin, a self-driving, electric shared vehicle, shown to the public in January 2020 in San Francisco, was the first product revealed using GM’s third generation EV platform and Ultium batteries. Next will be the Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV in April. Details about its launch will be shared then. The reveal of the Ultium-powered GMC HUMMER EV will follow on May 20. Production is expected to begin in Fall 2021 at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, GM’s first assembly plant 100 percent dedicated to EV production.     A UNIQUE, LOW COST BATTERY CHEMISTRY AND EASY TO MANUFACTURE DESIGN.   GM’s new Ultium batteries will have the highest nickel and lowest cobalt content in a large format pouch cell.   Large format pouch cells require less wiring and plumbing than small cylindrical cells. Our battery management system is built in, which eliminates 80 percent of the battery pack’s wiring compared to the Bolt EV.   GM’s joint venture with LG Chem to develop and mass produce battery cells will drive cell costs below $100 per kWh. Ongoing technological and manufacturing breakthroughs will drive costs even lower.   New technologies under development to improve charging, cycling, range, cost and battery life include:   Zero cobalt and zero nickel cathodes The use of electrolyte additives to heal cell “scratches” that reduce cycling Solid state batteries   https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2020/mar/0304-ev.html     Jalopnik says: "The Detroit Free Press was there to scribble down some nuggets of info on GM’s EV plans, which involve selling over 1 million EVs by 2025. The news site writes that among the 11 vehicles shown—10 of which were physically present, and one of which the Free Press says was just a rendering—were three “dramatic” Cadillacs, two Buick SUVs, four Chevys, and “the first two GMC Hummers.” The third EV Caddy presented was an Escalade-sized SUV. A three-row vehicle, GM presented a machine with “high-def screens that literally stretch along the dashboard the full width of the car, from pillar to pillar,” the Detroit Free Press writes. It sounds like GM is upping its screen size game on its future EVs."   https://jalopnik.com/heres-how-gm-plans-to-dominate-the-electric-car-market-1842147451   CHEVY BOLT EUV SHOWN WITH SUPER CRUISE, LONGER WHEELBASE, IMPROVED DESIGN "GM didn’t just show off the new 2021 Chevy Bolt EV today, they unleashed the long-rumored more crossover version of the Bolt called the EUV…and it came with some surprises along the way." says Seth from Electrek: "I’ll start with the bad news here since that is short. The Bolt EUV batteries are the same as the 66kWh Bolt using the same BEV 2 platform. However, with the bigger, heavier vehicle, the range will be shorter. I’d guess about 245 miles EPA or so. Also, there will NOT be an AWD version which is my biggest gripe. The Bolt EUV is basically a stretched Bolt with some new amenities. It sits at roughly the same height with a 3-inch longer wheelbase, 3-inch longer trunk space, and a more SUV-like front hood. Level 2 charging is faster. That bigger hood space allows for a bigger 11kW charging inverter which is close to 46 amps at 240V. GM hasn’t nailed down a delivery date for the EUV but plans to announce more this summer. It will come after the 2021 Bolt so expect that it will arrive mid-2021 or so."   https://electrek.co/2020/03/04/chevy-bolt-euv-announced-with-supercruise-longer-wheelbase-and-improved-design/   GM'S NEW ULTIUM BATTERY ISN'T BETTER THAN TESLA'S "When GM spilled details on its new Ulitum battery, it revealed that capacity will be up to 200 kWh and range of vehicles equipped with such batteries will boast up to 400 miles of range. The numbers are impressive, but the misleading headlines make it seem as though the figures somehow trump Tesla." says Eric for InsideEVs: "400 miles of range is an impressive figure, but remember that Tesla has already stated its future vehicles will go much farther than that. In top-spec form, the Tesla Cybertruck has a claimed range of over 500 miles from a battery pack of an undisclosed size. 500 is a lot, but guess how far Tesla says the new Roadster will go? Over 620 miles per charge. Tesla's today can almost hit 400 miles on just 100-kWh of battery, so saying that GM's 200-kWh Ultium battery tops Tesla's is a statement that surely misses the mark. It's bigger, but not necessarily better."   https://insideevs.com/features/402845/gm-battery-not-beat-tesla/   BIG BIG CELLS "Big, big cells. The focus, according to Andy Oury, lead engineer for the battery packs, was to “let the cell be all it can be.” To that, pouch cells provide a packaging and design advantage, and they’ll soon provide a cost advantage. GM chose to apply large-format cells, with the widest electrode rolls in the industry—"the fewest number of the largest cells possible,” as he put it—to help cut wiring and connectors within the modules. The 100-Ah cells GM is using are each the equivalent of about 20 of the 2170-format cylindrical cells Tesla uses in its Model 3 and Model Y, Oury said." according to Green Car Reports: "The company worked to clarify what the differences are at its presentation and why skateboard strategies are actually limiting: Neither the entire BEV3 component set nor its Ultium electric propulsion technology are limited to a particular chassis or body floorpan. This means that cars and crossovers can continue being uni-body while the toughest electric trucks can be body-on-frame, and still share components. Many of the cars and crossovers will be built with some shared body and chassis components nevertheless. "   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127366_evolution-11-keys-to-gm-s-electrified-future   CHEAPER BATTERIES BY 2025 "The batteries currently powering the Bolt cost $145/kWh, while the new Ultium batteries produced under the joint venture with LG Chem will drive battery cell costs below $100/kWh (by 2025). The cells use a proprietary low-cobalt chemistry, and GM expects that ongoing technological and manufacturing breakthroughs will drive costs even lower in the coming years." says CleanTechnica who were there in person: "The batteries will be manufactured in the new LG Chem/GM plant in Ohio, with an initial annual capacity of 30 GWh. When GM reaches its goal of 1 million EVs produced annually (by 2025), that equates to the manufacture of 250 million cells per year. The modular propulsion system and global EV platform powered by the Ultium batteries will enable GM to produce vehicles for every segment of the market, including entry-level cars, work trucks, and high-performance sports cars."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/03/04/breaking-gm-shares-battery-ultium-ev-platform-details-during-ev-day-event-cleantechnica-field-trip/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why.   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #669   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 17th January 2020. GM’S ELECTRIC HUMMER "Americans still love hulking SUVs, even as they realize these gas guzzlers contribute to global warming. What to do? Revive the Hummer, duh. And replace the old 10-mile-per gallon diesel engine with an electric powertrain fueled off the grid." says Yahoo! Finance: "(GM) will bring back its Hummer name starting in 2022, according to news reports, adding the monster truck to its GMC lineup. There will be no gas- or diesel-powered version this time, just an electric. GM will supposedly run a Super Bowl ad with NBA wizard LeBron James on Feb. 3 to announce the reincarnation. vA radical battery-powered truck will demonstrate GM has something to show for its EV investments—something critics and buyers can get fired up about. A zero-emission Hummer will also solve a problem for potential buyers who love the muscle but don’t want to be ostracized for belching pollution."   Fool.com says:" Besides the nameplate, GM intends to make the vehicle resemble the earlier Hummer, tapping strongly into brand recognition and nostalgia. Specific Hummer models will include a pickup truck -- probably launched first in late 2021 or early 2022 -- and a large off-road-capable SUV. It recently teamed up with LG Chemical (OTC:LGCLF) to construct a $2.3 billion electric car battery factory in Ohio. According to GM's press releases, the massive facility will produce at least 30 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity annually, enough to outfit several hundred thousand electric vehicles.  In addition, GM is pumping $3 billion into renovating its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for the express purpose of building electric pickups and SUVs."   https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/01/18/gms-electric-hummer-and-pickup-plans-may-jolt-futu.aspx   IONITY ANNOUNCES A KWH-BASED CHARGER PRICING PLAN "IONITY, the pan-European ultra-fast charging network, has announced that from January 31, 2020, it will change its pricing structure from "per session" to "per kWh." says InsideEVs: "The new price will be €0.79 ($0.88) per kWh for "customers without contracts."   And from Teslarati: "That’s a substantial premium compared to the Tesla Supercharging Network, which has a rate of about 0.25 EUR ($0.28) per kWh. Thus, with this new pricing structure in place, an Audi e-tron or Porsche Taycan owner would end up paying about $80 to charge the all-electric SUV from zero to 100%. Considering that these vehicles are capable of traveling just over 200 miles on a charge"   RENAULT OFFICIALLY CONFIRMS THE TWINGO ZE From a Renault press release: "2020 will mark a new stage in its electric offensive with the launch of Twingo Z.E. and the deployment of its new E-Tech hybrid and plug-in hybrid offers."   "Renault finally confirmed the launch of the Renault Twingo ZE for this year." according to PushEVs: "We can expect it to be officially unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show which takes place in 5-15 March 2020. There are some rumors that this car is already being produced and tested on public roads, therefore soon we should starting seeing some spy shots. Previously Renault feared that a Twingo ZE could cannibalize the sales of the ZOE. But now the new Renault ZOE can easily differentiate itself from a smaller and cheaper electric car with its improved interior, WLTP range of 395 km and a price above 30.000 euros. The Renault Twingo ZE will have in the VW electric triplets its most direct alternatives."   https://pushevs.com/2020/01/18/renault-officially-confirms-the-twingo-ze/   BMW TO CONVERT MUNICH PLANT FOR I4 PRODUCTION THIS SUMMER "BMW will be closing its main plant in Munich for six weeks this summer to convert it to producing the all-electric BMW i4. The EV is scheduled to go into series production next year, still with battery cells bought in. However, this could change in future." writes electrive: "In future, the i4 electric car will roll off the production line together with the 3 and 4 series models. According to BMW, more than 1,000 robots in the body shop and assembly area will be converted to then flexibly assemble the various drive forms on a production line according to demand. BMW will still purchase the battery cells for the i4, from CATL and Samsung SDI among others as reported. Although BMW maintains its own Battery Cell Competence Center for research, it does not manufacture the crucial cells itself."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/17/bmw-to-convert-munich-plant-for-i4-production-this-summer/   FORD INVESTS €42 MILLION IN VALENCIA FOR NEW HYBRID MODELS Ford today announced a €42 million investment in its Valencia manufacturing plant, Spain, to support the company’s electrification strategy with a state-of-the-art battery assembly facility in addition to new S-MAX Hybrid and Galaxy Hybrid models. Two new assembly lines will enable the advanced lithium-ion batteries that help power all-new Kuga Plug-In Hybrid, all-new Kuga Hybrid, and new S-MAX Hybrid and Galaxy Hybrid to be produced.   Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid CO2 emissions from 26 g/km Ford Kuga EcoBlue Hybrid CO2 emissions from 111 g/km   https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/feu/en/news/2020/01/16/Valencia.html   ELECTRIC TAXIS TO GO WIRELESS THANKS TO NEW CHARGING TECH TRIAL The UK Transport Secretary announced today (17 January 2020) that £3.4 million will be invested in trials for wireless charging of electric taxis in Nottingham. Wireless charging at taxi ranks could provide an alternative to plugs and chargepoints, meaning multiple taxis can recharge at once, supporting drivers to charge up more easily. It would also reduce clutter on our streets. Installing wireless chargers at taxi ranks offers drivers the chance to recharge while waiting for their next passengers, so they can help the environment and start their journeys quicker. The technology, allowing for shorter and more frequent bursts of charging. Ten Nissan and LEVC electric taxis in Nottingham will be fitted with wireless charging hardware for 6 months to trial taxi rank-based charging.   https://www.gov.uk/government/news/electric-taxis-to-go-wireless-thanks-to-new-charging-tech-trial   ROADIE LETS YOU VIEW TESLACAM AND SENTRY MODE VIDEOS ON YOUR PHONE It is basically a Raspberry Pi Zero programmed by Jake Luciani to store, protect, and make the videos your Tesla records with TeslaCam or Sentry Mode available to your smartphone. That implies you can save them or share them instantly." says InsideEVs: " While Tesla erases the videos after about one hour or two, to save space, Roadie keeps them for more time. It is a handy solution for those accidents in which you did not have time to deal with the video, and it ends up lost. A hit-and-run, for example, or something as unexpected as that. After connecting Roadie to your Tesla, all you need to check the videos in your smartphone is that the car is turned on – moving or with Sentry Mode activated – a wi-fi connection for Roadie and the app."   https://insideevs.com/news/393187/roadie-teslacam-sentry-mode-smartphone/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification? After sales director, Pieter Nota had said in September that there were no plans for a successor to the i3, Zipse now put a stop to rumours of a possible production stop." writes electrive: "He made it clear to the local medium Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung: “The i3 will continue to be produced, no question about it. The car is already an icon today. Which car can claim this after only six years? Icons tick according to a different logic, they don’t have a classic successor, they always remain true to themselves in essence.” Today, the i3 is more in demand than ever and will “make another leap in battery and operating concepts”.   https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/19/zipse-promises-continuation-of-the-bmw-i3/   HUMMER REVIVAL AS ELECTRIC SUV COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN "The Hummer brand has been defunct for almost 10 years now, but reports about its revival continue to surface. The most recent ones, however, may need future Hummer buyers to find charging stations instead of fuel pumps." according to Motor1: "In an exclusive report by Reuters, GM is said to have plans to build a new line of premium electric utes at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant at the end of 2021. With this new line comes the possibility of reviving the Hummer brand as an electric off-roading truck/SUV. This is according to the news organization's sources – people that are familiar with the said plan. The new line of premium electric utes will be called the BT1 electric truck/SUV project, Reuter's sources said. It will be the main subject of the $3-billion investment in the Detroit-Hamtramck plant to make electric trucks and vans, which is part of the four-year $7.7-billion umbrella investment in GM's U.S. plants – all enclosed within the proposed labor deal between GM and the United Auto Workers union."   https://www.motor1.com/news/377325/gm-electric-hummer-revival-report/   CALIFORNIA PLUG-IN HYBRID MAKER KARMA AUTOMOTIVE NOW ACCEPTS BITCOIN "Karma Automotive announced Tuesday that it will now accept Bitcoin at its flagship Newport Beach location. " says Green Car Reports: "In addition to dabbling in cryptocurrency for simple transactions, Karma will also explore theoretical blockchain applications outside of the that space, the electric-car manufacturer said in its announcement.  This move signals Karma's intent to expand its role as a tech incubator as well as an automaker. Many large-scale manufacturers have entered partnerships or established their own tech incubators to study green energy, mobility and other items outside of the traditional automotive sphere.  It also serves to further differentiate the new Karma brand from its roots in Fisker Automotive, from whose ashes the new company was formed. The Revero GT is the only carry-over product; two more models are planned along with a forthcoming in-house EV platform."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125562_california-plug-in-hybrid-maker-karma-automotive-now-accepts-bitcoin   HITACHI AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS STARTS MASS PRODUCTION OF 800V, HIGH OUTPUT EV INVERTER "Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. has started mass production for its 800V compatible high-voltage and high-output electric vehicle (EV) inverter, which increases EV practicality and enables long-distance driving. The product contributes to both comfortable acceleration performance of the vehicle and faster charging times." according to Green Car Congress: "As most EVs are based on a 400V system, in order to increase the vehicle’s driving range, additional batteries with parallel connection are required. This results in increasing the battery capacity but also the charging time. However, an 800-volt system enables the battery to be charged with the necessary amount of energy over a short period, allowing for fast charging of high capacity batteries."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191019-hitachi.html   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS TOM RAFTERY The answer is simple. Stop spending money of subsidising fossil fuels. Two birds, one stone ☺ This would immediately make petrol/diesel more expensive, and therefore Evs more attractive! And the wider environmental effects of making fossil fuels more effective would cause a massive shift to renewables for electricity generation.   Peter Ferrett The government will save money by not subsidising oil as much, this should ofset the lost in tax from fuel.   Søren from Australia I suspect that stopping the subsidies given to the oil,  gas and coal industries would more than cover the lost revenues for petrol taxes.   OPHIR The best way to compensate for lost gas taxes is to stop subsidizing oil and gas companies!   DUNCAN ARMOUR I think the question only makes sense if you ignore what is going on around the industry. The UK government funds the fossil fuel industries to the tune of £490 billion (2014 - the government is very adept at hiding its funding). Worldwide subsidies for the fossil fuel industries are some USD5.3 trillion (2015). The nuclear industry additionally receives subsidies which dwarf those of the oil and gas industries. So, if we stop subsidising industries that are destroying us, we wouldn’t need to pay vehicle tax, and would be receiving huge rebates on our income tax (which would allow us to easily afford solar).   JERRY LEVY 1) Tax carbon emission of ICE cars from emission test result And 2) Tax electricity used by EV or even household if it is generated from fossil fuel.  This will force people to put pressure on local government and utility companies to generate electricity from renewable energy.   KIERAN KENNEDY Currently, EVs are exempt from road user charges, and this is currently our only form of EV incentive in New Zealand. The government has promised that they won't be charged road user charges until 1st January 2022 or when EVs make up at least 2% of the fleet, which ever comes sooner. It is looking like the 1st January 2022 will come sooner based on current trend, although uptake here is still impressive. When they do start to charge EVs road user charges, it makes sense to collect the revenue the same way we do for diesel vehicles currently. That is, road user chargers are bought in advance and displayed on your dash. This will have a higher administrative cost than taxing petrol currently, but wouldn't necessarily have to if systems were automated and done online.   DOUG VOWLES Here in Ontario Canada when vehicle registrations are renewed, the mileage is reported on the form.  So an equitable road taxation formula could be:   Yearly mileage X vehicle weight X vehicle type factor X “some constant factor” = $road tax   The vehicle type factor can be adjusted over time to reflect the increasing dominance of electric vehicles, being lower (but not non-existent) now, but rising as EV’s become the only type of vehicle on the road.    ED CORTEEN the answer is simple and fair (according to me!??), pay per mile driven, where driven and most importantly at what time of day, so city centres at peak times will be expensive, a quiet country road in the afternoon cheap. How can this be achieved? My 24kW leaf, now a 10 year old design already almost does this, from the app I can see how far we travelled every day, how much power used, how long the journey was and with modern telematics it should be quite simple to automatically gather the data required and send it in, (sadly)!   DAFFYD CHEUNG I’d suggest, the electricity supplied at public charge points could be taxed in the same way. The more you drive and the less efficient the vehicle, the more you’d contribute per mile/km. Since there’s a handshake between charger and vehicle. A count could be made, of how many kWh had been obtained from public chargers for your vehicle/s in the year or month. Home charging could also be taxed in a similar manner, if a fast charger is utilised   SHAWNE IN PORTLAND, OREGON Oregon has started a pilot "pay by the mile" program to replace paying at the pump. http://www.myorego.org/ I wonder if a tire tax would work. The bigger the tire, the heavier the vehicle,  the more road damage so the higher the tax.

Show #612   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 16th October 2019. BREAKING! TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION TO START IN Q1 2020 (UNOFFICIAL LEAK) From  Chanan at CleanTechnica: "Originally, the Model Y was supposed to start shipping in “late 2020”. Currently, Tesla’s website says new orders will ship in Q1 2021. However, according to an anonymous source with a proven and reliable track record, Tesla is about to accelerate its plans and start production in Q1 2020 at its Fremont factory. (We’ve also received the same information independently through a reliable second-hand source.). The Model Y will launch with the Long Range all-wheel drive (AWD) trim, according to this source, and Tesla will release the Standard Range Plus (SR+) version once production has been ramped up and the Model Y SR+ has a large enough gross margin. Another fun little tidbit of technical information we have been told is that the Model Y will indeed use the new revolutionary flex-cable circuitry that reduces the length of wires needed throughout the car and also gives every component a redundant connection to the battery and the computer. This makes it possible for robots to install more of the “guts and veins” of the car and cut down on the manual labor involved in installing cables. As Elon Musk has said multiple times, robots suck at placing normal cables into the vehicle."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/15/breaking-tesla-model-y-production-to-start-in-q1-2020-unofficial-leak/   NEW PORSCHE MACAN EV TO GET TAYCAN PLATFORM AND TECH "first revealed by Autocar in October 2018. The new model will feature an entirely different bodystyle from the existing Macan to reflect its status as a reinvented model for the brand." says Ricahrd at Autocar: "Speaking to Autocar at the recent Frankfurt motor show, Porsche’s director of SUVs, Julian Baumann, confirmed that the existing, internal combustion-engined Macan will remain on sale alongside the new Macan during a transitional phase. The offering will broadly mirror that offered by the Taycan/Panamera duo. The electric Macan will arrive in 2021 and initially be a high-performance model in the mould of the Taycan, carrying the same Turbo badging to identify it as the top-of-the-range version. The current Macan will be offered alongside it partly because “some customers are not ready for EVs,” said Baumann. “So there will be two different cars.”"   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-porsche-macan-ev-get-taycan-platform-and-tech   BASE PORSCHE TAYCAN HAS MORE POWER THAN A 911 GT3 "The Taycan 4S will be available in two battery sizes, but it's the larger 93.4 kWh two-deck 'Performance battery Plus' Porsche has detailed online. According to the Instagram post and a subsequent press release, the large-battery Taycan 4S will boast a peak output of 563 hp. Sure, that's nearly 200 hp less than the Turbo S. Even the standard-battery 4S gets decent power though, with a 79.2 kWh single-deck Performance battery giving it 523 hp in overboost state, meaning the cheapest Taycan money can buy still has more power on tap than a Porsche 911 GT3."   https://carbuzz.com/news/base-porsche-taycan-has-more-power-than-a-911-gt3   2021 AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK SPIED UNCOVERED "Audi teased a camouflaged Sportback variant of the 2020 Audi E-Tron earlier this year. We expected we would see the car uncovered pretty soon after, but one of our spy photographers has caught it undisguised before Audi could reveal it." writes Joel at Autoblog: "It looks pretty much the way we expected. The upright rear of the E-Tron has been exchanged for a sloping fastback. The greenhouse looks quite a bit like the Audi A7 with a large rear quarter window. It also has fairly prominent roof rails that help maintain the E-Tron's crossover image. Everything south of the window line looks to be carry-over from the regular E-Tron. Mechanically, the E-Tron Sportback should be identical to the traditional hatchback version. That means two electric motors, one at each end, making 355 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque. Range will probably be close to the current model's 204 miles. We expect the official unveiling of the Sportback to come by the end of the year, possibly at the LA Auto Show."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/10/11/2021-audi-etron-sportback-spy-photos   TESLA MODEL S PLAID P100D+ SPIED AT NÜRBURGRING "It appears that two Tesla Model S Plaid P100D+ prototypes have returned to the Nürburgring. Spy shots of the two vehicles acquired by Teslarati depict the two Model S doing runs around the iconic track with renewed ferocity." reports Joey at Teslarati: "The “Plaid” Model S that Tesla brought to the Nürburgring this time around were vehicles that had notable differences compared to the two units that took on the German racetrack last month. While the vehicles featured the same wide body kit, large air intake at the front, a rear spoiler, and track-optimized wheels and tires, the two Plaid Model S vehicles that were recently sighted feature new air vents on the front fenders. A blue Plaid Model S prototype is even fitted with a rear diffuser."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-p100d-spy-shots-nurburgring-images/   JCB SECURES FLEET DEAL FOR NEW ELECTRIC DIGGER From thecontructionindex.co.uk: "A-Plant has bought a fleet of 10 of the 19C-1E model in a deal worth more than £350,000. The 19C-1E - JCB’s first-ever electric diggers - are being produced at JCB Compact Products in Cheadle, Staffordshire, with orders rolling in from across Europe and North America. The model, which is five times quieter than its diesel counterpart, is expected to be popular with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive inner-city areas."   https://www.theconstructionindex.co.uk/news/view/jcb-secures-fleet-deal-for-new-electric-digger   BP CHARGEMASTER CONTINUES UK CHARGING STATION ROLL OUT "BP Chargemaster installed four new 150kW rapid chargers at their retail site in Hammersmith, London. Their plan is to furnish their Polar charging network with another 400 units of the variety by 2021." writes electrive: "The chargers were powered up this week, following the UK rollout of their fast charging network across the nation. The first of the 150 kw fast chargers were launched in August, with the first two units installed at the retail site BP Cranford in Hounslow. Charging can be done with both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors, with a full charge possible in about 10-12 minutes of charging time"   BUICK LAUNCHES VELITE 6 PLUS MAV EV WITH INCREASED RANGE OF 410 KM "Buick launched the VELITE 6 PLUS MAV (multi-activity vehicle) electric vehicle in China." reports Green CAr Congress: "The newest member of the VELITE 6 family, the VELITE 6 PLUS has a constant-speed range of up to 410 kilometers (255 miles) under New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) conditions on a single charge. The original VELITE 6 MAV was launched in April with an electric driving range of 301 kilometers. As Buick’s first global all-electric vehicle and SAIC-GM’s first electric vehicle for the mass market, the VELITE 6 integrates resources and advanced technology from GM and SAIC for new energy and connected vehicles. It represents the latest application of the Buick Blue strategy. The capacity of the battery in the VELITE 6 PLUS has been increased to 52.5 kWh and its energy density has been increased to 140 Wh/kg, allowing it to store more energy with the same volume. It provides electricity consumption of 13.1 kWh/100 km."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191015-velite.html   MAZDA TEASES ELECTRIC CAR'S INTERIOR AHEAD OF TOKYO MOTOR SHOW DEBUT "While Mazda previously confirmed with Roadshow ahead of an official announcement that the Tokyo Motor Show would serve as the backdrop for the electric car's reveal, the automaker teased the EV's interior on Tuesday." according to CNET.com: "Mazda Europe's official Twitter flashed a brief look at the electric car's center console, which reveals a sleek design complete with a familiar rotary knob that operates Mazda's infotainment system in current vehicles.A Mazda representative previously told Roadshow that the battery-electric vehicle will not be based on a current Mazda production vehicle. Whatever the company has planned will be a totally new model. We're also in the dark on what form this vehicle will take, but it's a safe bet this will be a crossover of sorts."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/mazda-electric-car-interior-features-tokyo-motor-show/     GM OFFERS TO MAKE ELECTRIC PICKUP IN DETROIT, AS UAW PUSHES FOR MORE US-MADE GAS VEHICLES "GM has committed to building an electric pickup truck in Detroit in its ongoing attempt to negotiate a new contract with the UAW." says Green Car Reports: "Last Friday, Detroit's WDIV-TV detailed the latest in negotiations between General Motors and the UAW Friday as the two seek to resolve a contract stand-off that currently has more than 45,000 U.S. auto workers on strike nationwide.  As part of this latest round, GM has promised to build an electric pickup truck at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which GM had previously said it would shutter. While this would be good news for the UAW on the surface, a new EV line would likely not fully utilize the existing plant space, meaning GM would not be able to employ as many union workers there as it had in the past."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125520_gm-offers-to-make-electric-pickup-in-detroit-as-uaw-pushes-for-more-us-made-gas-vehicles   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   How can we make up for the lost revenue from taxing fossil fuels?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 255 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA ALLOWS DISCOUNTS AND OFFERS 2 YEARS OF FREE SUPERCHARGING "Tesla is pulling out the big guns for its end-of-the-quarter push. Electrek has learned that Tesla is authorizing its sales staff to give two years of free Supercharging, and it is discounting inventory vehicles by matching them with cheaper orders." reports Fred today: "While Tesla claims it has been trying to move away from it, the automaker often ends up making massive sales and delivery pushes at the end of each quarter.  Last quarter, Tesla pushed hard and offered bonuses to employees in order to achieve record deliveries, and they were successful.    Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla has authorized its sales staff to offer two years of free Supercharging for new Model 3 orders that get delivered by the end of the month, which coincides with the end of the quarter. Furthermore, they are also authorizing sales staff to waive the fees of up to two features to match orders with inventory vehicles, which can result in important discounts. The features are limited to paint colors, interior, and wheels. For example, you could be ordering a Model 3 Standard Plus in white with 18-inch wheels for $38,990 and if Tesla happens to have the same Model 3 in red with 19-inch wheels, Tesla’s sales staff can approve the sale of the vehicle for the same price"   https://electrek.co/2019/09/13/tesla-discounts-free-supercharging-end-of-the-quarter-push/   FORD'S MUSTANG-INSPIRED SUV BOASTS 300-PLUS MILE RANGE "Ford seems prepared to bring all the ammunition it can for its first electric vehicle, the unnamed Mustang-inspired SUV. This Thursday, the automaker launched a new website for electric vehicles in Europe and quoted a 370-mile range for the electric SUV, based on WLTP estimates." says CNET: "WLTP figures are far more liberal than our EPA estimates. Some quick math for a conversion pegs an EPA estimate to land somewhere around 330 miles of range on the high side. If Ford does nail that figure, it will be the only other electric car to rival Tesla's Model S Long Range, which packs an estimated 335-mile range. A Ford representative underscored the 370-mile range figure will not mimic an EPA estimate and said the target is still at least 300 miles for the US market. It's important to note the website also says "up to 370 miles." The phrasing indicates this figure will definitely correspond to a range-topping model with other models beneath it boasting shorter ranges, but likely less expensive price points."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-mustang-suv-electric-range-specs-features/   VOLKSWAGEN PLANNING TO CREATE ONE OPERATING SYSTEM FOR ALL OF ITS BRANDS "Christian Senger, head of the Digital Car and Services division for Volkswagen Group, tells Ars Technica, “Software is extremely complex nowadays. Each function is connected with everything — in the car, in the cloud, with the dealers — and we see that too many projects are in too much trouble. The process chain is not stable anymore; there’s so much inefficiency to this process. Today, we build more than 10 million cars a year. But they are running on roughly eight different electronic architectures." reports CleanTechnica: "Senger points out that the Android operating system is capable of running perfectly well on smartphones that cost as little as $60 to those selling for $1000 or more. [VW] will consolidate all of its software development into one new division that will employ up to 10,000 people within the next 5 years. The objective is to create a single unified automotive operating system that will run everything from a VW Polo to an Audi A8. Senger says Volkswagen has decided to use Android as the basis of its new software architecture, particularly because of the robust third party app ecosystem that is based on Android."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/16/volkswagen-planning-to-create-one-operating-system-for-all-of-its-brands/   GM CONSIDERS LAUNCHING THEIR OWN BATTERY PRODUCTION "General Motors apparently intends to produce their own battery cells in the future. This is the result of statements GM has made to the US car union United Auto Workers (UAW) in current talks to settle a strike." says electrive: "Within the framework of contract negotiations, General Motors has promised the union investments in the USA totalling 7 billion dollars over the next four years – among other things for the production of an electrically driven pickup in Detroit as well as for the aforementioned production of battery cells in Lordstown in the US state of Ohio. According to Reuters, GM’s electric pickup is scheduled for 2022 and could roll off the production line at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. There is no further information on the apparently planned production of battery cells."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/17/gm-considers-launching-their-own-battery-production/   SPY SHOTS SHOW VW ID.4 ELECTRIC SUV WE'LL GET IN THE U.S. "The model we're expecting to launch the German giant's new line of electric vehicles on this side of the Atlantic is the ID.4 – the production version of the ID. Crozz concepts showcased in Shanghai and Frankfurt two years ago. And these latest spy shots, captured in the Austrian Alps, give us our best look yet at how it'll appear in production guise." reports Motor1.com: "the ID.4 will be taller than most, offering a more commanding driving position and increased interior space – somewhere in between that of the short-wheelbase, five-seat Tiguan offered overseas and the elongated, seven-seat version (known elsewhere as the Tiguan Allspace) that we get here in America. The ID.4's larger form will necessitate a more potent electric powertrain than the smaller ID.3's. So in conjunction with the 200-horsepower electric motor driving the rear wheels on the hatchback, we're anticipating Volkswagen will install a 100-horsepower motor on the front axle to deliver a combined 300 hp and through-the-road all-wheel drive."   https://www.motor1.com/news/371167/volkswagen-id4-spy-shots/   CATL CONSIDERS US PLANT, TARGETS 45 PERCENT ENERGY-DENSITY BOOST IN 5 YEARS "China’s Contemporary Amerex Technology Co., better known as CATL, has in the past several years become a global battery giant. Last week one of its senior executives revealed to Reuters that the company is considering a manufacturing expansion into North America, even though the market for EVs will lag that of China and Europe. " says Green Car Reports: "The company is already planning a battery “gigafactory” of its own in Erfurt, Germany—a facility that will start production in 2021 and be one of the largest battery plants in Europe. CATL announced firm numbers for the improvements. It can now accomplish more than 200 watt-hours per kilogram with its automotive lithium-ion batteries for EVS (up from 180 wh/kg). Energy density with its current chemistries has reached 240 watt-hours per kilogram, and it’s targeting 350 wh/kg—a 45 percent improvement—by 2024."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125058_catl-considers-us-plant-targets-45-percent-energy-density-boost-in-5-years   ON THE ROAD TO NORMAL New research conducted by Go Ultra Low, the joint government and industry campaign to promote the uptake of electric vehicles, has found that two thirds (69%) of people expect “electric cars” to be referred to simply as “cars” by the year 2030. The research, which looked at the normalisation process of new technology, found people seeing their family and friends driving them (33%), as well more being visible on the road (49%), as the two main factors driving a change in the way we perceive EVs. This comes as registrations for battery electric vehicles hit a record high, with a 93.1% increase in year-to-date registrations compared with the same timeframe last year. When asked what factors would improve the likelihood of purchasing an EV, close to half (45%) of respondents cited improved charging infrastructure.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/09/on-the-road-to-normal-two-thirds-of-people-expect-electric-cars-to-be-referred-to-as-cars-by-2030/   TESTED: RENAULT ZOE CAN GRID-BALANCE "Dutch smart charging specialist Jedlix and the Elaad Competence Centre have concluded that Renault Zoe can be used in a balancing capacity of TenneT in the Netherlands." reports Electrive: "To use Renault Zoe for network balancing, the car’s charging process had to be able to react to real-time signals. At Elaad’s test centre in Arnhem, in the Netherlands, the two partners conclusively proved that the Zoe is able to respond to TenneT signals within seconds. According to Jedlix, this kind of suitability is further proof that electric vehicle batteries can be efficient and competitive resources that contribute to increasing the flexibility requirements of national grids. Renault already has two smart grid projects underway: on the French Island of Belle-Île-en-Mer where the system on the island will combine a car-sharing service with EVs, local solar energy storage and an intelligent charging system. Renault is converting used batteries to power the largest holiday resort on the island. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 24th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA LAUNCHES BACKUP POWER THROUGH POWERWALL 2 IN EUROPE WITH NEW HARDWARE Tesla is rolling out new hardware in the form of Backup Gateway 2 for Powerwall in the UK which will enable Powerwall to keep your home running in the event of a power cut. Powerwall detects grid outages and switches to become your home's main energy source, protecting your home from the next power outage and keeping your lights on, phones charged and no puddles under the fridge.   In the event of a utility power outage, the Backup Gateway 2 immediately disconnects the home electrical system from the utility and restores power to the home. Whereas a traditional solar system typically shuts down during a grid outage to prevent any power from going back into the grid, because the Backup Gateway 2 manages the grid connection, solar can continue to operate. Powerwall can detect an outage, disconnect from the grid and bring power back to your home in a fraction of a second. The Tesla app provides notifications when Powerwall disconnects from and reconnects to the grid, allowing you to manage your home power consumption. Each Powerwall provides 13.5 kWh of usable energy for backup power when full. You can use the Tesla app to monitor your usage and conserve power to extend your backup coverage for a day or more. Additionally, when Powerwall is paired with solar it can continue to recharge and has the potential to run your home indefinitely.   About Backup Gateway 2 As well as replacing non-Backup Gateway 1 in Europe, the new Backup Gateway 2 unlocks faster connectivity and a stronger connection providing reliable, real-time insights into your power usage. Powerwall is always paired with Tesla’s Gateway. Backup Gateway 2 provides high quality metering of your home and solar panel system, gives you access to the Tesla mobile app, communicates with the Tesla network, supports multi-Powerwall installation and enables seamless transition to backup during an outage. It’s now even easier to install. Backup Gateway 2 has integrated electrical connections (built-in site and PV metering, space for generation breakers), which eliminates the need for separate generation and load panels.   A Tesla Spokesperson said: "“Rolling out in the UK this month, our new Backup Gateway 2 for Powerwall will enable a number of significant new features here and around the world for customers. It’s the first time that Backup hardware is available for Powerwall in Europe and we are excited to bring the new functionality alongside increased connectivity, a new design and easier installation.”   NISSAN LEAF E+ ORDERS HIGH: PRODUCTION CAPACITY MIGHT BE AN ISSUE "Nissan announced earlier this month that it received more than 3,000 pre-orders for 3.ZERO Limited Edition of the LEAF e+ in Europe, from 5,000 units planned." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "According to Ken Ramirez, Nissan Europe’s senior vice president sales and marketing, the first thousand pre-orders were placed in the first day and 3,000 were reached in mid-January, which seems to be just several days after announcing prices. The interest is so high that Nissan will need to “recalibrate” its expectations – in other words, there will again be a queue of customers waiting for their electric cars. Surprised? We aren’t. This seems to be the case with every new and compelling EVs these days."   CHEVY VOLT PRODUCTION HAS OFFICIALLY COME TO AN END "It’s now official. Chevrolet has pulled the plug on production of its Volt. The plug-in hybrid that helped kick-start the electric vehicle revolution will no longer roll from the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant." says Domenick at InsideEVs: "This truly marks the end of an era. The car was very attractive to those who felt an all-electric couldn’t completely fulfill their needs. The 2019 edition can travel an EPA-rated 53 miles on a charge before the gas engine kicks in to keep the vehicle in motion. Indeed, it was a huge sales success in some parts of the U.S. and in 2018, it edged out its all-electric sibling the Chevy Bolt on our Plug-In Sales Scorecard by a few hundred units."   https://insideevs.com/chevy-volt-production-officially-ends/   PEUGEOT E208 LEAKED New images have leaked of the Peugeot e208, 50kWh and 186miles (300km). One rumour says Later the year Peugeot will unveil a 72 kWh option coupled with a 150 kW motor (over 200 hp).   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Eduard Pertíñez • 1 day ago Question of the week: I am pretty sure there is room for new car manufacturers coming in the future. ICE market was a closed one. Not only you had to create a very expensive engine, but you had to follow a strict very expensive regulation for pollution. Once the bar was high enough nobody could enter the market. But in the EV market you will not have to follow expensive regulations, neither you'll have to create very expensive motors. In few years there will be plenty of motors available in the market. Plenty of battery packs from different manufacturers. Once you have one of each, 70% of the job is done.   Bill B • 4 days ago I remember when the Big Three in Detroit had it all here in the US. Take a look at the number of auto manufactures selling very well here in the US now. There is always room for a good deal in the US. A startup will have to have exceptional styling, performance and price point; along with service. That's a tough challenge in today's market but a company like Byton might make it. Cars from China may be the next auto invasion here in the US.   Frederick Stirnkorb • 6 days ago I believe there is room for start ups in luxury and performance end like Rivian is pursuing. Also plenty of room in the commercial vehicle market. If someone can get the 4 billion in capital then go for it.   Rambler Andy • 6 days ago Yes, there is plenty of room for start-ups, especially if they come as well prepared as Rivian, However, I wonder whether there will be another Tesla, that led the vanguard. Doing a Tesla is a great way to establish a brand, but it's a rocky road and the product has to be better than what is currently out there. That was easier when all there was was FFVs. So maybe only Tesla will survive as themselves. The rest being snapped up by big automotive or tech companies, who are relatively late to the game, and see that an acquisition gives them a passport to the EV world.  Amazon could eventually and easily make Rivian a brand under its umbrella, and then transfer the Rivian technology to other EV start-ups, as it acquires them, that have something distinctive about them [like a good design and manufacturing facilities]. GM could snap up start-ups, having themselves production expertise, but forgotten electrical knowledge and no software to speak of. Bollinger could easily be snapped up for that very reason, and there are several other start-ups with the same potential. None of which have production vehicles, but have the zeitgeist in EV design and electrical expertise.   D R-K • 1 week ago (edited) Yes, we have plenty of room for start ups. Tesla will not be the only one to make it as they ushered in this new era, because there are some fundamental hardships the big traditional companies have to face. Ass for the "flood " of cars, well, the numbers don't currently support that as of yet. There is plenty more demand than availability and still limited choice in price, style and segment. We have room and I look forward to who will be around in the coming ten years and beyond   Neil E Roberts Whenever there is a major industry disruption and electrification of transport is definitely a major disruption, the incumbents always struggle to shift to the new model. Some make it, many won't. It tends to give small new companies who can be much more agile, lots of chances to grab market share. I think that in the next ten years, many of the well known brands will have gone completely or merged with others. We will see new companies which today are unknown. How exciting.....   Leanne Roberts Absolutely, but if current car manufacturers have shown, it is going to take some considerable investment of which, many automakers have failed to correctly predict in terms of supply and demand. Examples being KIA eNiro, Hyundai Kona and VW e-Golf. I say bring it on as long as you have a huge amount to invest behind you to compete with current auto manufacturers in price and reliability of supply.   Jon / Beardy McBeardface Regarding QOTW I think there is definitely space for start ups and imho they will bring the greatest innovations to market. Legacy car makers will, for the most part, play it safe. We are not seeing anything that makes me go WOW from VW, Nissan etc but the Sono with built in solar panels...wow! I know it’s cheeky and it’s ok if it can’t happen but when we get our weekly plugs could you mention the new Kent EV’s club that I am heading up please?     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Daily Detroit
GM's Monday Massacre And The Closing Of Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly

Daily Detroit

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2018 27:58

General Motors dropped a bomb on Monday, saying it will likely close three assembly plants including Detroit-Hamtramck in a pre-emptive move to cut costs and headcount ahead of an expected downturn. The moves mean the elimination of as many as 14,000 jobs — including 1,500 at Detroit-Hamtramck — and the elimination of slow-selling sedans like the Chevrolet Volt and Impala and the Buick LaCrosse. A transmission plant in Warren could also close. It's a particularly dubious cap to the saga of the Poletown plant, which rose during the 1980s after the two cities it straddles worked with GM to condemn and raze a working-class neighborhood of the same name. On today's episode, we speak with Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski, who tells us the closure leaves a city defined by the auto industry without any actual auto manufacturing. It also leaves Detroit without an open auto-assembly plant. In fact, here's Mayor Mike Duggan statement about it: "This morning I spoke to Mary Barra and she advised me for the first time of the situation at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. The news is troubling. I have spoken to UAW President Gary Jones and the city's economic development team. They are working together to come up with a solution that works for GM and the employees. We all know there is strong demand for manufacturing space in Detroit and we are willing to work with GM to fill all the available manufacturing space at Poletown with either GM-related entities or other companies." You can also read the UAW's statement here. We also speak with auto analyst Michelle Krebs of Autotrader to learn about the business rationale behind the move. And finally, tech guru Nuri Gocay joins us to shed some light on where General Motors is actually adding jobs (hint: It ain't in Detroit). CEO Sergio Marchionne wants to have one management group for both Fiat and Chrysler, not the two separate groups like they’re now using. General Motors will build the next-generation Chevy Impala at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant, alongside the Volt and Malibu. One analyst is warning that Chinese automakers face severe overcapacity unless they change plans to expand. All that and more, plus John answers your questions about diesels, CAFE rules and more in the "You Said It!" Segment.
