In this episode we welcome Orisanmi Burton back to the podcast. For this conversation, we discuss Dr. Burton's latest article, “Targeting Revolutionaries: The Birth of the Carceral Warfare Project, 1970 – 1978.” Which he describes as a supplement to his forthcoming book, Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt. This piece was recently published in the May issue of Radical History Review which is on Political Imprisonment and Confinement. In this discussion we pick up on our previous episode with Orisanmi Burton on carceral warfare. Here Burton talks about the role of Black Panther and Black Liberation Army veteran and former political prisoner Dhoruba bin Wahad's role in illuminating and analyzing the FBI's little known Prison Activists Surveillance Program (PRISACTS). Burton situates this program amid a broad set of counterinsurgency programs which operated in multiple theaters of war both internationally and domestically. Burton illustrates how within this international terrain of counterrevolutionary war, figures slipped between various programs, moving between military, intelligence, private defense contract, and domestic law enforcement and prison systems. Importantly, Burton reminds us that many state actors, including congressional bodies, presidents and governors recognized a threat of revolutionary activity in the streets in the 1960's and by the late 60's and early 70's they understood there to be a threat of revolutionary activity behind prison walls as well. To respond, they sought to use programs like PRISACTS to specifically undermine incarcerated revolutionaries. The legacy of this struggle offers a great deal to help us understand the role of US prisons today as sites of domestic warfare. Just a note that there is a second portion of this conversation which we hope to release at a later date. It is briefly referenced in the opening question. Currently we are just waiting for the publication of that second article. Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt is available for pre-order you can find a link for that in the show notes. And the publisher does have a 40% off sale that goes through the end of May. I can't wait to have more discussion on that book upon its release. This is our 7th episode of the month of May. Who would have thought things are trending in opposite direction for the Packers and the Bears...but that's exactly what's going on...and the teams have identical records. That's how we kick off this week's edition of the Intentional Foul. We'll run through both games and where the teams are at, whether there's TOO much parity in the league, wrap up this past week's results and give a snapshot of this coming week's list of games. A minor glimpse at the Badgers beating Purdue. Baseball is making fans wait way too long for a World Series...and it's a matchup nobody will pay attention to outside of the home markets. The Bucks are off to a decent start this season. The UW-Whitewater football team underperformed and lost its first conference game last Saturday. And for the high school sports fans...the WIAA has a problem with its seeding of the Milwaukee co-op schools in basketball and now in football. All that and more coming in the next 90+ minutes. With many path-breaking books, James C. Scott has for long been a key figure in Southeast Asian Studies and in the comparative study of agrarian societies, peasant politics and resistance studies. His hugely influential scholarship crosses disciplines, shaping political science, anthropology, and history. In this conversation, we focus on a selection of Prof. Scott's books, including Seeing Like a State, which is a magisterial critique of top-down social planning, The Art of Not Being Governed, which highlights the crucial functions of “places of refuge from the state”, and his latest, Against the Grain – which provides a deep history of the earliest states. He is currently writing a new book on the Irrawaddy River – in which he argues that engineering and damming show how humans work, violate Nature’s traffic and how humans shape land.James C. Scott is the Sterling Professor of Political Science and professor of anthropology at Yale University where he also co-directs the Agrarian Studies Program. His research concerns political economy, comparative agrarian societies, theories of resistance, peasant politics, revolution, Southeast Asia, theories of class relations, and anarchism. Have you ever looked at your dog and wonder "How would you ever survive in the wild?!" I know my dogs are super spoiled and would not survive long in the wild even though they still have their predator instincts. Imagine what the circumstances must have been like when the first wild dogs were domesticated by humans. It was such a long time ago that it would be interesting to see how that would happen now. Well, according to new research, there may be a way to find out how and why domestication happens using a small tropical reef fish and mysid shrimp as an example. Longfin damselfish curate algae farms on their piece of the reef in Belize, which is in itself incredible. Researchers observed an interesting presence of mysid shrimp above the algae farm. The presence was found in multiple places on different parts of the reef, but the presence was in the same area as the longfin damselfish a majority of the time. Researchers conducted a few experiments to conclude that the mysid shrimp are protected by the damselfish while the algae is fertilized by the waste of the mysid shrimp providing a better quality algae product. More details on the episode. My conclusion: The Ocean Is Fantastic! The domestication of animals has transformed the way that people eat, clothe themselves, and live over the past 10,000 or so years, but what in the world does "domestication" even mean? How did this happen, and why did people start doing this? If dogs are man's best friend, what are cats? Our begrudging roommates? Whatever they are, they hold a unique place in the genetic experiments we call domestication. While goats and sheep looked tasty and wolves were helpful on the hunt, cats were just kind of handy to have around. But they were free to come and go as they please for most of the historical interaction between homo sapiens and felis silvestris ... and that works just fine for cats. He spends most of his time on a ranch outside Austin, Texas where he does his writing and work in between raising cattle, donkeys and goats. Source: https://ryanholiday.net/about/ About the Book The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do. The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck. If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way, it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era. Source: https://www.amazon.com/ Buy the book from The Book Depository -https://www.bookdepository.com/Obstacle-is-Way-Ryan-Holiday/9781781251492 /?a_aid=stephsbookshelf BIG IDEA 1 (5:47) – Invoke the reverse clause. There’s a quote from the book that says, “The impediment to action advances action, what stands in the way, becomes the way”. Ultimately the obstacle is the way. Marcus Aurelius, who is talked about in the book, suggests that we need to turn our obstacles upside down and have a way to find another path if necessary. Stoicism suggests that we have a choice, whether we will move over, around or through the obstacles that appear in our life. One concept in the book is the flank attack on an obstacle – stepping back and finding a new path. Take the line that is least expected which is not always the ideal one but gets us around, over or under the obstacle that is in our way. BIG IDEA 2 (7:06) – Behaviours and virtues. If an emotion can’t change the situation, it’s probably unhelpful. This doesn’t mean you can’t feel the emotion – vent, rant or even cry. It is about how you control (or domesticate) your emotions. Stoicism is about emotional regulation or control. We need to tame emotions; train them and use them to our advantage. The virtues of stoicism include patience, courage, humility, resourcefulness, justice, reason and creativity. These are the virtues that you need to have to overcome the obstacles in your way. BIG IDEA 3 (8:37) – Act. The root to overcoming the obstacles is through action. Despite the situation you find yourself in, you have the courage to take action. If you fail, that is okay, that’s just feedback that you need a different path and you just have to find a new way. Problems are our chance to do our best. And we shouldn’t assume everything will go well; we should do pre mortem and plan for problems so we know how to react. External factors influence that path but not the direction. We should always be moving forward. Here is the second instalment of my conversations with Greg Bellingham about spirituality.Whether you like to admit it or not, spirituality is a central part of the human experience. However there is an enormous amount of insecurity around this subject of spirituality and what it means to be a spiritual person. In this episode, greg explains the 3 ways insecurity impacts a person's spirituality.Insecurity causes people to:1. Dismiss it all together2. Domesticate or formalise it3. Privatise itAll three approaches leave a person outside of an authentic and embodied spirituality.

Earth can be our home for many millions of years to come, but at some point, we will absolutely venture away from it and start surfing the solar winds, or powering up our ion drives, to navigate the many worlds our solar system has to offer. We'll swing around gas giants and play on their moons. We'll build cities on the Moon and Mars. We'll mine asteroids for all the water ice, ore, and precious metals we'll ever need. It's not just a fantasy. In fact, the required technology is just around the corner. We just need to make the first steps, right after we explain why we'd ever want to leave a planet on which we evolved, especially when not everyone could join us on this adventure.

This week, we do a spin-off of our evolution miniseries and talk about a topic we started discussing last week - domestication! We cover the domestication of corn, dogs (again), and Hanwoo cattle. For the domestication of dogs, we discuss a different paper that found genetic variants between wolves and dogs in starch digestion (dogs can and wolves can't). We talk about a paper looking at the domestication and inbreeding of Hanwoo cattle and how that might be affecting fitness. We also weigh in on the Yanny-Laurel debate.

[13:33] Not everything that is strange, wonderful, or wild is going to become true. [14:53] Doing, not thinking, is the solution to all the problems in the world. [16:13] Kevin believes AI will become a commodity like electricity. [21:14] One of the ways in which our economic infrastructure will shift is in the invention of new institutional forms. [22:31] There will be a increase in scale [economics]. [25:25] We need to have tolerance for natural monopolies (like Facebook). [27:50] We're constantly inventing ways to have a winner take all, new verticals. There is an infinite amount of verticals. [28:35] His most unpopular idea that he believes is ‘the thing': anonymity in the internet is a bad thing. [29:35] He believes ending anonymity on the internet would end bullying, harassment, etc. [30:05] Anonymity is like sales. In small amounts, it is harmless, but in large amounts, it is toxic. [36:26] He believes a world government is necessary at this time (taxes, police, leadership, tackling problems at the global level). Three key points: You want to have small, steady failures that course correct instead of one catastrophic failure that wipes you out. This is the best time to make things happen. There's never been as many tools, as much money, as much knowledge. Anonymity is like sales. In small amounts, it is harmless, but in large amounts, it is toxic. Have you ever heard a friend or even yourself saying I have tried to quit alcohol for the past ten years. Each glass of beer is the last. This is procrastination at work. I have 4 big ideas .so let me first define what procrastination is First and foremost procrastination is the tendency to delay unpleasant but important acts. For Example: Going to gym – writing thank you letter, writing a book. Guess what even New Year resolution won’t help. Procrastination is pure idiotic because no project complete itself.th irony is that we are well aware that these tasks when completed, are highly profitable or beneficial. So why do we keep pushing those projects in the Owen until we are burn out. Well the answer is pretty obvious: The environment – because our mood is not created by our consciousness, namely our mood is created by a shallow impulse of the environment that we don’t necessary notice. Now how do we go about domesticating it and capitalize on it? Well here are 4 big ideas to be implemented --First and foremost since procrastination from our natural willpower via low motivation – the cure here is to change the environment or one’s profession by selecting one where - you do not have to fight with your impulse. To be more clear your environment has be in alignment with your natural impulse rather than against it. --Second have a deadline stipulated/set by an external authority or virtual authority that you respect and honour. --Third, self-impose works also very well under the condition if the task is broken down in step by step, with each part assign its own due date --The fourth big idea is to combine all the three previous big ideas. When you all what is mentioned above- You experience we call the duty life, hence you are Magnificent. By the way, the magnificent acts to satisfy his duty – whereas the weak acts to satisfy his/her need Have you ever heard a friend or even yourself saying I have tried to quit alcohol for the past ten years. CARTA - Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (Audio)
In this talk Richard Wrangham (Harvard Univ) puts forth the theory that Homo sapiens are, in fact, a self-domesticated species. He defines “self-domestication” as the evolution of a reduced propensity for reactive aggression (compared to an immediate ancestor), without the active involvement of another species. He then shows that communal sanctions practiced by hunter-gatherers, which depend on proactive aggression, provide a leading candidate mechanism selecting against high levels of reactive aggression. He therefore proposes that human self-domestication is an ironic consequence of a particularly well-developed facility for proactive aggression, and concludes that humans did indeed self-domesticate, providing a critical underpinning for inter-individual tolerance and cooperation.
