Health at Every Size is a hot topic right now. But what exactly does HAES or HAES-aligned actually mean?  Health at Every Size (HAES) is NOT at all suggesting that someone is healthy at every size. In fact, if someone says that HAES stands for “Healthy at Every Size,” then they really don't understand what they're talking about. Yes, the one letter makes a difference. Now read this paragraph again.    DEFINITION: Health at Every Size is a framework that talks about access to healthcare. It states that everybody has the right to work toward health and have equal access to healthcare. That's the main point.   So what does that even mean, and how can you apply the framework of HAES? I'm breaking it all down in today's episode. Eating Disorders, Disordered Eating & Dysfunctional Eating Behaviors When you hear the words “eating disorder” most people get an image in their mind of what that means and what that “looks” like. Unfortunately, that can lead to many missed opportunities to help people. If we use different terminology, such as disordered eating or dysfunctional eating behaviors, we can appreciate the fact that anyone who eats can have problematic eating behaviors. They don't even have to rise to the level of an eating disorder to be an issue. There's no reason that someone couldn't or shouldn't get help just because they don't meet certain criteria or fit a certain stereotype. In addition, this approach can feed into some outdated treatment for eating disorders if the treatment is based solely on the outward symptoms. There are many different origins of disordered eating that can and should be taken into consideration during evaluation and treatment. Jessica Setnick has worked in the eating disorder field for nearly 25 years, as well as her own eating disorder recovery. She envisions a world where no one is ashamed to talk about their eating issues, and everyone who wants it has access to help. She works toward these goals by educating health professionals and the public, especially through her training workshop, Eating Disorders Boot Camp, and her Eating Disorders Pocket Guides. She started a professional organization for eating disorder dietitians through which she advocates for legislation to improve access to care.  Anyway, about the title. I know what you're thinking, “Um, eating disorders are definitely a problem,” and you're not incorrect. This chat will highlight why eating disorders have come about because they were solutions to a larger problem. Solving that problem will enable you to get rid of ED for good. Solving just the problem of ED will leave you with the roots untouched. That's when your body, psyche, whatever will find another solution to the larger problem. The first thing I said to Jessica when she signed into the zoom call is "Wow, I feel like I am speaking to a celebrity." And its true. Jessica Setnick is well known in the eating disorder field because her work is extremely thorough and up to date. If we were more open about our food peace struggles, we'd probably find that many people around us are ALSO struggling with diet culture and disordered eating... we need to promote sharing our experiences as a safe option to find support. Sometimes being a smart, self-aware person puts us in a situation of paralysis by analysis! Reach out for support with the appropriate professionals, either in-person or virtually, as the first step to getting out of our own head. Even if we think we know what to eat already, seeing a dietitian is KEY! They can help us break down our own unhelpful thought processes or behaviors. Work on the perfectionism, and work with a dietitian to brainstorm solutions to your individual struggles or roadblocks. What even is an eating disorder dietitian?? They're often more in tune with the connection between food and anxiety or food and emotions. Find the expert who's going to really help you with recovery!! You might go through withdrawal if you struggle with exercise addition or compulsion, so seek out a psychiatrist if there's a need for an evaluation for medication. Being unable to change a pattern doesn't mean you're not trying!! It means that the pattern is so, so strong, and may actually be related to your brain chemistry. Julie and Jennifer discuss how this helps clinicians better treat this experience, promotes insurance coverage, and increases research funding.
