This week on TechtalkRadio, Andy and Shawn explore some tech gadget ideas for kids as Shawn's Son approaches his first birthday, including a not very traditional Roku Remote without batteries that Shawn found to be a fun toy. Shawn also discusses his experience with the Endor 3 3D Printer and how he used it to create useful items for his home, such as a baby gate designed from Thingiverse. Additionally, he shares his thoughts on the new Wyze Wireless Gaming Headset, highlighting both its pros and cons. Andy also weighs in on the discussion, sharing his preferred headphones for work and gaming, including the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro and SteelSeries Arctis 7. Finally, they touch on the exciting new partnership between Roku and Wyze, which includes the integration of Wyze cameras into the Roku platform. Andy discusses his recent news segments on the dangers of text spam, email scams, and the emerging threat of voice AI, which could be used to capture voice prints and scam people in your social circle. He also shares his experience with Voice.AI, one of the best voices deepfake sites he's come across, and even surprises Shawn with a demo of one of the voices he created. While the service can be pricy, it certainly has its fun uses however could also have risks associated with it. Andy also shares a frustrating experience with BingChatAI, which ended a chat with him because it felt he was being confrontational when he was just trying to provide accurate information about TechtalkRadio. CEO of RAXCO Software, Bob Nolan, joins Andy Taylor to discuss the company's history and offerings. With roots dating back to 1978, RAXCO Software began as a provider of system management tools and has since evolved to offer a range of solutions, including server management, system backups, and quick restoration options. Bob and Andy also discuss the importance of these solutions in the context of recent ransomware attacks, such as the one experienced by the Tucson Unified School District earlier this year. Specifically, they delve into RAXCO's Instant Recovery technology and how it has helped organizations recover from such attacks. The unlikely success of a copy-paste developer. Nyfiken? Wellcome to the last transcribed edition of the Ebu Access Cast for 2021. Stay tuned till the end because we prepared many nice things for you and if you stay listening, you will hear surprising announcement at the end. However if you are really curious skip out to the end of the shownotes to find out what did we say. Mario bought him self a nice and cheap pair of Sennheiser HD 206 studio headset. On the current list of the best budget studio headsets for 2021, this one sits on the first place. Hlynur got him self Roborock S7 – vacuum cleaner, and Tanja got Seagate One touch 5 tb hard drive as well as SanDisk Ultra Trek™ USB 3.0 Flash Drive 128 GB Another piece of a cool and free gadget is LION - Live, intelligent OCR for NVDA which is able to read direct subtitles. Pawel discovered new addon for NVDA called NVDA Advanced OCR which is able to make direct OCR from the PDF document. Keep in mind that the addon is still in the early stages of development, but it is already very promissing, so if you want to know more about it check it out on its Github page. We are very close to Christmas and black Friday is just behind us, therefore we bring to you a nice article fromm Kelly Ford called Black Friday Accessibility Deals Free for the Taking TwBlue, a famous third party Twitter Client has new version out, and we will talk about what you need to do in order to get it running because direct instalation over previous version will not work. Whatsapp started offering their new beta version of their Client for Windows which we found out to be much more accessible than official release, therefore if you wish to try it out on your pc, here is what you need to do. If you own Samsung Android smartphone which you recently purchased, you are probably wondering when you will get the update to the newest One UI 4? Which comes with Android 12? Well no worries, Android Police prepared a nice article with all information. StSolutions is the company which makes nice online accessible software by using a JS library called designer.js, and Pawell will tell us more about it. AstroAccess is a website which talks about persons with dissability travelling into space. Our inspector gadget Pawell knows more about it. Our show lasted since May of 2018, during this time we had a nice long season with all of you, and we really enjoyed making it. However due to the many different occupations from each of us who are having our daily jobs, Ebu Access Cast will be taking a break for a while, therefore EBU will keep you informed if the show returns with new crew members, or if the podcast will transform into something different. In the mean time, Mario, Tanja, Pawel and Hlynur wish you all the best for the upcoming holidays, so if you want to follow us individualy, search for us on Twitter and you will find us for sure.

(Richard Yates added: The UK switched off analogue transmissions in 2012.) Ideally, the aerial needs to be the same length as the wavelength for best possible reception. However, at many frequencies, the wavelength is extremely long, making it impractical to make aerials that are the full wavelength. FM radio for example, would need aerials of a little over three meters long. That would be difficult to mount on a car and would tend to hit things as the car drove down the road. Also see Richard's detailed and technical summary of thoughts on the topic in the MeWe Group ------------------- Ian Barton with a Starlink Update After some experiments with positioning Dishy, I found that facing SW was giving me the most reliable signal. There are quite a few obstructions, so the view of the sky is a bit limited. However, Dishy is going to be moved to a chimney, which is about 10 metres above ground, this week. I am regularly getting download speeds of 150-200 Mbits. Yesterday the sky was completely covered with rain clouds and it was pouring with rain. I was getting download speeds of more than 200 Mbits. I have stopped using the supplied Starlink router. The cable is now connected to the WAN port of my Netgate firewall/router. The stats page of Starlink is on a separate network that is embedded in Dishy. So I have to create a firewall/NAT rule that can let me view the stats page on Dishy from my router. It consists of either a rotating disk with slots or holes or a lamp such as a flashtube which produces brief repetitive flashes of light. Usually, the rate of the stroboscope is adjustable to different frequencies. When a rotating or vibrating object is observed with the stroboscope at its vibration frequency (or a submultiple of it), it appears stationary. Thus stroboscopes are also used to measure frequency. The principle is used for the study of rotating, reciprocating, oscillating or vibrating objects. Machine parts and vibrating strings are common examples. A stroboscope used to set the ignition timing of internal combustion engines is called a timing light. For Record Player Platters The edge of the platter has marks at specific intervals so that when viewed under fluorescent lighting powered at mains frequency, provided the platter is rotating at the correct speed, the marks appear to be stationary. This will not work well under incandescent lighting, as incandescent bulbs don't significantly strobe. For this reason, some turntables have a neon bulb or LED next to the platter. The LED must be driven by a half wave rectifier from the mains transformer, or by an oscillator. ...you can also now get apps for smartphones which make use of the camera to clock the speed of rotation/movement. You can also get stand-alone meters of course, mainly used in industry I guess, with readouts. John 00 Fleming presents JOOF Sessions 002 (Weekly Facebook Live stream) JOOF Sessions have now become our weekly online gathering to momentarily step away from the darkness in this strange world into the light to smile and dance together during these uncertain and challenging times. As usual no set is ever preplanned, I had no idea what I'd be playing and headed down the deep dark rabbit hole of musical bliss. These live sets are hosted live on Facebook every Friday 21:00 - 23:00 GMT. But as shown this week I had a lock in while we were locked in and played for an extra hour. Join us live every Friday 21:00 - 23:00 GMT www.facebook.com/john00fleming For the geeks out there kit used: Managed to get use of a Pioneer DDJ 1000 controller. Rekordbox performance. Sennheiser HD 25 headphones. PG tips tea. Tesco dark chocolate digestives. Two Bichon Frise At these uncertain times the first thing you take care of is your family and I'm no different. Currently with no gig income or government support for our JOOF company, this effects many within the JOOF office family and I'm doing my best to ensure we all make it through this. Many of you are organically sending me messages wanting to send donations as a thanks for my live broadcasts, I think this is a great idea to distribute amongst the JOOF office family to keep them afloat. You don't need to give anything at all as it's hard times for many out there, this is for the many that are asking, so don't feel pressure. The main thing, we're all in this together and I want to support you in anyway that I can to keep you entertained. You can donate here: https://www.john00fleming.com/donate/

Richard and I go waaaay back. Yep, we were touring America together back in 2002 and that was the first time I met him. tWas a warp records tour with Mark Bell (RIP), Nightmares on wax, Prefuse 73, Luke Vibert and other nutters! He was the guy fixing everyone's laptops on the bus I recall. We were all busy getting wasted and he was onto something else. That pretty much explains the man. Super generous with his time and pioneering in his goals and accomplishments. Not a follower. Indeed, not content with just making LPs, touring and all of that trad life, Richard's made his own path and now his work represents the high bar for sound design across the board. Whether working for Google, Yamaha or Jaguar Richard is the guy to figure out converting the unknown into the possible. A no to yes convertor. We talk about his toughest sonic challenge, the cutting edge of sound tech in 2019 and where he is heading in terms of his AI aspirations. We chat about the world of sound that lives above 20kHz. Why analog ??? and a lot more. He's a deep mind and this chat gets pretty specific in terms of tools used and so forth. You're welcome! Richard talks about a purely algorithmically generated set of music Here's a link: https://williamfields.bandcamp.com/album/fieldsos Really something unexpected. Earlier in September, 2018, I introduced the Autumn Project (2018). You can read all about it, but in brief: between September and the end of December, 2018, I'm planning, plotting, and completing the first draft of my next novel, Light of the Outsider, in public. It's an exercise in accountability, transparency, beginner's mind, and teaching what I learn. In that spirit, I've promised to share my progress on a regular basis through "minisodes" of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick. This is the second update! Listen to the episode for all the details... meanwhile, here are some significant statistics and other stuff: The Autumn Project (2018): September 16 through September 26, 2018 This ten-day period was all about wrapping up the character background notes, then "breaking" the novel, and then finally preparing all that material for the day when I begin writing actual manuscript pages of the first draft... which began on September 27, 2018... so that stuff, we'll talk about in the next update! Days Worked: Nine (Fifteen total) Total Time Worked: 16 hours, 42 minutes (31 hours 24 minutes) Words Written: 9620, not including the timeline, which was adapted from the prose background material (21,624 words total) Approximately 1069 words per day / 593 words per hour What Do I Mean by "Breaking" the Story? This is a term borrowed from screenwriting and from television series writer rooms. It's not the same as when a journalist "breaks a story" -- that's when a reporter is the first to report on something. In this context, to break a story means to break the sequence of events down to individual "beats," or scenes, and put them in order according to their place in the arc of the larger tale and each character's arc. Typically, there are three acts (or four, if you count the first and second half of the second act as two acts) in a longer work, with several scenes per act. In the episode, I talk about how my last novel, Pilgrimage, stayed very close to the traditional three act structure, and how Light of the Outsider, while still broken into three acts, doesn't necessarily follow all the usual rules. Lessons Learned The value of writing all those words in character background (see the last update) really proved valuable again and again during the plotting / breaking phase as new connections popped up in my mind. I was reminded of something the author Maggie Bonham (and maybe others have) said: "Outlining is where brainstorming happens." That's because brainstorming is almost always more fruitful if it's done within some kind of structure... like, for instance, three well-defined acts..! Also, I had an important epiphany involving a key (as in, what you use to open a lock) that eliminated one of the more hand-waving story points early in the first act. This was an intuitive thing that, nonetheless, has evaded me for a very, very long time when it comes to this novel. Tools and Resources In the episode, I mentioned the software that's gone into the pre-draft, planning / plotting stage. Here they are, with links; Workflowy. I use this list maker / outliner so much, it's probably my primary tool in my life, not just in writing, and not just in writing Light of the Outsider. I used Workflowy while writing the character background bits. Here's a blog post I wrote all about how you can use Workflowy in your writing projects. OpenOffice Calc, the free spreadsheet component of the free office suite. I used it briefly while working out the timeline of the characters' lives right up to the moment the novel begins. I reckon I'll be returning to it to keep timelines and continuity straight as I write the first draft, too. Gingko App. Similar to Workflowy, but designed more specifically for writing long form documents. I broke the story in Gingko. It's neat. yWriter. In many ways, especially how it doesn't try to be all things to all people like Scrivener does, I prefer yWriter for organizing, keeping track of, and actually writing my novels and short stories. It also doesn't hurt that it's free. Read my full review of yWriter. Watch as I Write Light of the Outsider! Remember, you can support the Autumn Project (2018), the Sonitotum podcast, and watch the live video feed of every writing session for Light of the Outsider when you become my patron for just $3.00 per month. It's hard to make a headphone more ordinary-looking than Bose, the king of rounded black plastic, but Sennheiser is giving it a shot. The company's latest wireless headphones make even conservative cans seem gaudy and overstyled. They're about as black, matte, and plastic as you can find. Even the name "HD 4.4 BT" is all function, no flash. It stands for HD sound and Bluetooth 4.4.

All of which were replaced for android devices. Now in their place we have a Sony Z4 10 inch tab, a Sony Z3 tablet compact. The Z5 compact was chosen as the phone, but replaced with a bargain nextbit robin until the xz1 compact later this month. Both these android tabs look better, feel better and out perform the ipads as well as being waterproof and have expandable storage, both with cellular as well.I cannot recommend these enough. I have since bought more z3 tablets for family who previously had ipad minis. They love them and find the improved functionality most beneficial.I note they remain on sale from CEX and cone with a 2 year warranty.I would be interested to hear your views especially as the smaller z3 tab is available for around £150.Heres to more great shows, keep them coming. Will you view the exact equipment I use at https://jerrybanfield.com/resources/ to see which microphone, software, and services I use to power my business online? When I started my business online, I had no idea what equipment I needed, which software would do the most for me at the best price, or how to find the websites with services to put it all together. Along the way I felt lucky every time I found one new product or service that was helpful often by hearing it mentioned in passing by another instructor. As I continued to work in near complete ignorance of what I really needed, I wasted thousand of dollars and hundreds of hours on ineffective equipment, software that only made my life more challenging, and signing up for services on untrustworthy websites which took my money while offering me no real value. After years of struggling to build a business that was self-sustaining, I asked what could I do to make this process easier for others? I've been watching an online audio mastering course on Creative Live called DIY Mastering (by Jesse Cannon). In it, he was talking about how he always checks his work on cheap speakers and Apple earbuds, since that's what most people use to listen to music. It got me thinking about the importance of good headphones, and how much they really matter. Are expensive headphones really necessary for mixing podcasts? Do you really need the best gear to make great work, or are you just procrastinating? My goal for this episode is to encourage you to do more with what you have and not fall into the trap of believing that better gear is the secret to success. Key Takeaways: Don't fall into the trap of believing that better gear is the secret to success. You don't need expensive headphones or speakers that are made for mixing music to make a podcast sound good. The difference between cheap and expensive headphones is subtle, but some people want and need that subtlety. Quality gear usually lasts longer than cheap gear. Terrible sound quality can ruin great content, but great sound quality won't make terrible content interesting or compelling. Invest in educating yourself at first rather than investing in better gear. All the expensive gear in the world doesn't make a difference if you're not creating stuff. Constraints can help you create great things. Don't fall into the trap of believing that better gear is the secret to success. I've been going through an online course about audio mastering from a mixing and mastering engineer, Jesse Canon. In this course (DIY Mastering) he talks about how he always checks his work on cheap speakers and Apple earbuds. He said, “It's because that's what most people use to listen to music these days.” He mixes the music on expensive speakers and headphones, but then he checks on cheap headphones because he wants to know what it sounds like. This set a lightbulb off in my head, and made me wonder: Do you have to have expensive gear when you're making podcasts? And are expensive headphones really necessary for mixing podcasts? Why Do People Recommend Expensive Headphones and Speakers for Mixing and Mastering music? Mixing and mastering are all about making choices about how to make audio sound. Better headphones and speakers let you hear more detail in your audio so you can make more informed decisions about how to shape those sounds, how to do EQ, compression, reverb, and special effects. Podcasts are not that complicated. Most of the time, a podcast is just a single person talking. You don't use a bunch of effects (unless you're making a show like Radiolab or Deep Vault). There aren't a bunch of changes in volume and dynamics. It just needs to be consistent and pleasant to listen to. Much of that comes down to recording with a good mic, setting input gain levels correctly, using good mic technique, and not recording in a noisy room or a room with a ton of natural reverb or echo. What Headphones Are Your Listeners Using? Most people listening to podcasts are probably either using Apple earbuds, cheap earbuds, less than $100, or listening in a car. I would be very, very surprised if the number of people listening to podcasts on audiophile quality, expensive gear was higher then 5% or 10% of the overall population. I don't think you need great headphones or speakers that are made for mixing music to make a podcast sound good. I'm an audio nerd. Before I got into editing podcasts, I was studying recording, mixing, and mastering music. I want great audio gear, but these days, I mix a lot of podcasts on $10 Panasonic earbuds. Even though I mix a lot of the seanwes podcasts I work on on cheap earbuds from Amazon, we haven't gotten complaints from listeners. In fact, in most cases, people talk about how great the sound quality is. That's because Sean invested money in some great mics, like the Shure SM7Bs, and some pre-proccessors, the DBX-286s. He knows how to set input gain levels correctly and he uses pop filters. The only bad thing I can say about the recordings that Sean makes is that he doesn't have sound treatment in his room. I can hear a little bit of the room sound, but it's not enough to bother the majority of his listeners. I don't think most people even notice it. I notice it because I'm a nerd, and I pay attention to things like that. Why Do People Want to Buy Expensive Gear? Everybody is different in their motivation and what they want, but if I can break it down a little bit, I think that beginners want expensive gear because they see their idols using it. They see a pro using it, that pro is doing great work mixing for great bands or doing great podcasts, and they think, “If I get the same gear that he/she has, I'll be successful like him/her.” They think the gear is why the pro has had success. So they drool over the gear, over the expensive microphones, the expensive computers, the expensive headphones, the expensive plugins, or whatever the pro is using. They're forgetting the years that the pro invested in learning everything, making mistakes, going through processes, putting out work, trying, experimenting, failing, and trying again. Why do the pros buy expensive gear and headphones? People who listen to a lot of audio develop their “ear” over the years, so they can hear subtle differences in the headphones—in the way that music sounds and in the way that podcasts sound. It's nice to be able to hear everything really clearly. The $300 pair of Sennheiser HD 600 headphones that I have sound better than the $10 earbuds. Here are the top four reasons I think pros invest in quality headphones: They sound great They're comfortable They usually last longer than cheap headphones You get to feel fancy Do expensive headphones sound way better? Maybe. Will they help you make a podcast that sounds drastically better? Probably not. The difference between cheap and expensive headphones is subtle, but some people want and need that subtlety. More expensive headphones are often more confortable. These HD 600s I have are stupid comfortable. I can wear them for 12 hours, they sound great, feel great, and they're pretty lightweight. They're a joy to wear. Also, quality gear usually lasts longer than cheap gear. The cheap $10 headphones that I buy will often break after six or eight months. A good pair of headphones should last you for years, maybe even decades. If you're going to spend some money, ask yourself, “Should I buy three pairs of $10 earbuds or a pair of $30 headphones that will last the same time as the three pairs of cheap headphones?” I think that's a tossup, but reliability and quality are worth paying for. Finally, you also get to feel fancy when you have expensive headphones. That's more about your ego, but it does feel good to have great gear. I like having nice things, and it's fine for you to want that too. It says something about you, that you're willing to invest in quality gear for whatever kind of work you do. If it's audio work, it's nice to be able to have this gear, and there's nothing wrong with a little bit of showing off, taking pride in the stuff that you invest in. What's More Important: Great Sound or Great Content? Terrible sound quality can ruin great content, but great sound quality won't make terrible content interesting or compelling. Crappy gear can ruin great content, but great gear isn't going to make average or boring content interesting or compelling. Time spent looking at and lusting over fancy gear you don't have is time you could have spent making stuff with the gear you do have. It's a distraction. It's procrastination. Time spent looking at fancy gear is time that you're not spending creating. The thing you're giving attention to is taking up your headspace, so it blocks out everything else from your life. Let's use notebooks as an example. I know a lot of people write and a lot of people draw. What benefit does a $40 notebook have over a $3 notebook? They're both paper, and you can write on either one of them. Will a $40 notebook help you write better than a $3 notebook? What about writing apps? Do you have to pay $40 or $50 for Ulysses or $100 for Scrivener, or could you write a book or a blog post in the TextEdit app in your Mac? It might not look exactly how you want, but you could get the job done. When I started podcasting, the microphone I had was a $150 Shure PG27 USB microphone. I thought I was fancy at the time. I have $250 BETA 87A now, running into a $500 interface… I have so much more now than when I started. The point is that I got started with something, with what I could afford at the time. It didn't sound amazing, but it sounded okay. I had to go through the process of learning all the different pieces that make up podcasting. Eventually I got to a point where I wanted to get better at my craft and I invested in a better microphone. But what really made the difference in my sound quality was learning how to do things like EQ and compression, mixing and mastering. If you have to choose, invest in educating yourself rather than investing in better gear. Don't get distracted by the gear. Don't procrastinate by spending a bunch of time reading reviews and drooling over expensive gear. At the end of the day, all the expensive gear in the world doesn't make a difference if you're not creating stuff. If you don't have an audience now, buying super expensive gear isn't going to magically bring you a ton of listeners, viewers or readers. I do believe that there is a minimum threshold of quality you should strive to meet, but it's in the range of hundreds of dollars, not thousands or tens of thousands. If you're just getting started or you're a year or two into it, buying a $10,000 mic is not going to make your podcast better than buying a $250 microphone. You're not going to know how to use it to the best of of your ability. You may have other problems with your podcasting setup and your workflow that you're not even aware of yet. Improve what you can, and don't spend all your time looking at gear. Examples of People Who Create Great Work Without Great Gear I'm sure some of you have heard of Tim Farriss before. I don't like the way he starts off his episodes with five minutes of ads, but that's my only complaint. Other than that, he has a lot of great content. It's not always stuff I'm interested in, but you can't argue that he's a very interesting person, and he's producing very interesting content, especially on self improvement. That being said, based on his sound quality, it sounds like he's using a $100 USB microphone. Most of the time it sounds like he uses a Skype call recording when he interviews people. He doesn't have the most amazing sound quality on his podcast and he starts every episode with minutes of ads, which is kind of annoying, but it doesn't matter that much. Tim Farriss has a huge audience because he's producing interesting content all the time. He's focused on making great content and not having the best gear or sound quality, and he's doing well because of that. Another example is Robert Rodriguez. I heard him on an episode of Marc Maron's podcast. He was talking about how he made his very first movie (El Mariachi) with a $7,000 budget. It was a tiny, tiny budget, but the movie blew up and ended up making $2,000,000 in the US. I watched it, and it was obviously low budget—but it was enough to kickstart his career. He said that because he had so little money, he only shot a take or two for each scene. He did the best he could with the constraints he had, and he didn't wait until he could afford the best movie gear. You can create great work with constraints, and oftentimes it even helps. If I had access to all the most amazing microphones, the best headphones, computers, audio interfaces, and all that stuff, I still couldn't sit down in a studio with a band and make a record that sounded as good as someone who's been doing it for 20 years. There's too much that I don't know. The gear isn't what's holding me back, it's the knowledge. It's practice and years of experience. Remember that most people are listening on affordable headphones or Apple earbuds. You don't need expensive headphones to make a podcast that sounds good. It's ok to get to know the gear and invest in good gear if you want to, but don't trick yourself into believing that good gear will guarantee you success. You have to put in the time to learn and hone your craft.

Do you really need the best gear to make great work, or are you just procrastinating? My goal for this episode is to encourage you to do more with what you have and not fall into the trap of believing that better gear is the secret to success.Key Takeaways:Don’t fall into the trap of believing that better gear is the secret to success. You don’t need expensive headphones or speakers that are made for mixing music to make a podcast sound good. The difference between cheap and expensive headphones is subtle, but some people want and need that subtlety.Quality gear usually lasts longer than cheap gear.Terrible sound quality can ruin great content, but great sound quality won’t make terrible content interesting or compelling.Invest in educating yourself at first rather than investing in better gear. All the expensive gear in the world doesn’t make a difference if you’re not creating stuff.Constraints can help you create great things.Don’t fall into the trap of believing that better gear is the secret to success.I’ve been going through an online course about audio mastering from a mixing and mastering engineer, Jesse Canon. In this course (DIY Mastering) he talks about how he always checks his work on cheap speakers and Apple earbuds. He said, “It’s because that’s what most people use to listen to music these days.” He mixes the music on expensive speakers and headphones, but then he checks on cheap headphones because he wants to know what it sounds like. This set a lightbulb off in my head, and made me wonder: Do you have to have expensive gear when you’re making podcasts? And are expensive headphones really necessary for mixing podcasts? Why Do People Recommend Expensive Headphones and Speakers for Mixing and Mastering music?Mixing and mastering are all about making choices about how to make audio sound. Better headphones and speakers let you hear more detail in your audio so you can make more informed decisions about how to shape those sounds, how to do EQ, compression, reverb, and special effects.Podcasts are not that complicated. Most of the time, a podcast is just a single person talking. You don’t use a bunch of effects (unless you’re making a show like Radiolab or Deep Vault). There aren’t a bunch of changes in volume and dynamics. I don’t think you need great headphones or speakers that are made for mixing music to make a podcast sound good.I’m an audio nerd. Before I got into editing podcasts, I was studying recording, mixing, and mastering music. I want great audio gear, but these days, I mix a lot of podcasts on $10 Panasonic earbuds.Even though I mix a lot of the seanwes podcasts I work on on cheap earbuds from Amazon, we haven't gotten complaints from listeners. In fact, in most cases, people talk about how great the sound quality is. That’s because Sean invested money in some great mics, like the Shure SM7Bs, and some pre-proccessors, the DBX-286s. He knows how to set input gain levels correctly and he uses pop filters. The only bad thing I can say about the recordings that Sean makes is that he doesn’t have sound treatment in his room. I can hear a little bit of the room sound, but it’s not enough to bother the majority of his listeners. I don’t think most people even notice it. I notice it because I’m a nerd, and I pay attention to things like that. Why Do People Want to Buy Expensive Gear?Everybody is different in their motivation and what they want, but if I can break it down a little bit, I think that beginners want expensive gear because they see their idols using it. They see a pro using it, that pro is doing great work mixing for great bands or doing great podcasts, and they think, “If I get the same gear that he/she has, I’ll be successful like him/her.”They think the gear is why the pro has had success. So they drool over the gear, over the expensive microphones, the expensive computers, the expensive headphones, the expensive plugins, or whatever the pro is using. They’re forgetting the years that the pro invested in learning everything, making mistakes, going through processes, putting out work, trying, experimenting, failing, and trying again. Why do the pros buy expensive gear and headphones? People who listen to a lot of audio develop their “ear” over the years, so they can hear subtle differences in the headphones—in the way that music sounds and in the way that podcasts sound. It’s nice to be able to hear everything really clearly. The $300 pair of Sennheiser HD 600 headphones that I have sound better than the $10 earbuds. Here are the top four reasons I think pros invest in quality headphones:They sound greatThey’re comfortableThey usually last longer than cheap headphonesYou get to feel fancyDo expensive headphones sound way better? Maybe. Will they help you make a podcast that sounds drastically better? Probably not.The difference between cheap and expensive headphones is subtle, but some people want and need that subtlety.More expensive headphones are often more confortable. These HD 600s I have are stupid comfortable. I can wear them for 12 hours, they sound great, feel great, and they’re pretty lightweight. They’re a joy to wear. Also, quality gear usually lasts longer than cheap gear. The cheap $10 headphones that I buy will often break after six or eight months. A good pair of headphones should last you for years, maybe even decades. If you’re going to spend some money, ask yourself, “Should I buy three pairs of $10 earbuds or a pair of $30 headphones that will last the same time as the three pairs of cheap headphones?” I think that’s a tossup, but reliability and quality are worth paying for. Finally, you also get to feel fancy when you have expensive headphones. That’s more about your ego, but it does feel good to have great gear.I like having nice things, and it’s fine for you to want that too. It says something about you, that you’re willing to invest in quality gear for whatever kind of work you do. If it’s audio work, it’s nice to be able to have this gear, and there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of showing off, taking pride in the stuff that you invest in.What’s More Important: Great Sound or Great Content?Terrible sound quality can ruin great content, but great sound quality won’t make terrible content interesting or compelling.Crappy gear can ruin great content, but great gear isn’t going to make average or boring content interesting or compelling. Time spent looking at and lusting over fancy gear you don’t have is time you could have spent making stuff with the gear you do have. It’s a distraction. It’s procrastination.Time spent looking at fancy gear is time that you’re not spending creating. The thing you’re giving attention to is taking up your headspace, so it blocks out everything else from your life.Let’s use notebooks as an example. I know a lot of people write and a lot of people draw. What benefit does a $40 notebook have over a $3 notebook? They’re both paper, and you can write on either one of them. It didn’t sound amazing, but it sounded okay. I had to go through the process of learning all the different pieces that make up podcasting.Eventually I got to a point where I wanted to get better at my craft and I invested in a better microphone. But what really made the difference in my sound quality was learning how to do things like EQ and compression, mixing and mastering. If you have to choose, invest in educating yourself rather than investing in better gear.Don’t get distracted by the gear. Don’t procrastinate by spending a bunch of time reading reviews and drooling over expensive gear.At the end of the day, all the expensive gear in the world doesn’t make a difference if you’re not creating stuff. If you don’t have an audience now, buying super expensive gear isn’t going to magically bring you a ton of listeners, viewers or readers.I do believe that there is a minimum threshold of quality you should strive to meet, but it’s in the range of hundreds of dollars, not thousands or tens of thousands. If you’re just getting started or you’re a year or two into it, buying a $10,000 mic is not going to make your podcast better than buying a $250 microphone. You’re not going to know how to use it to the best of of your ability. You may have other problems with your podcasting setup and your workflow that you’re not even aware of yet.Improve what you can, and don’t spend all your time looking at gear.Examples of People Who Create Great Work Without Great GearI’m sure some of you have heard of Tim Farriss before. I don’t like the way he starts off his episodes with five minutes of ads, but that’s my only complaint. Other than that, he has a lot of great content. It’s not always stuff I’m interested in, but you can’t argue that he’s a very interesting person, and he’s producing very interesting content, especially on self improvement. That being said, based on his sound quality, it sounds like he’s using a $100 USB microphone. Most of the time it sounds like he uses a Skype call recording when he interviews people. He doesn’t have the most amazing sound quality on his podcast and he starts every episode with minutes of ads, which is kind of annoying, but it doesn’t matter that much.Tim Farriss has a huge audience because he’s producing interesting content all the time. He’s focused on making great content and not having the best gear or sound quality, and he’s doing well because of that.Another example is Robert Rodriguez. I heard him on an episode of Marc Maron’s podcast. He did the best he could with the constraints he had, and he didn’t wait until he could afford the best movie gear. You can create great work with constraints, and oftentimes it even helps. If I had access to all the most amazing microphones, the best headphones, computers, audio interfaces, and all that stuff, I still couldn’t sit down in a studio with a band and make a record that sounded as good as someone who’s been doing it for 20 years. There’s too much that I don’t know. The gear isn’t what’s holding me back, it’s the knowledge. It’s practice and years of experience.Remember that most people are listening on affordable headphones or Apple earbuds. You don’t need expensive headphones to make a podcast that sounds good. It’s ok to get to know the gear and invest in good gear if you want to, but don’t trick yourself into believing that good gear will guarantee you success. You have to put in the time to learn and hone your craft.

Hey! Aaron from the future (2019) here. You can check out my updated gear guide at https://kit.com/thepodcastdude. There are a few things you’ll need to buy if you want your podcast to sound great. In this episode, I talk about why a great microphone is an essential investment for your show, and how much you’ll need to invest if you want your show to sound great and stand out from other podcasts. My goal was to create a comprehensive podcasting equipment guide for a beginner podcaster. I won't talk about every microphone, interface or pre-amp available, but I'll cover the essential pieces of gear you’ll need to get your show started. Podcasting Equipment Guide There are a lot of things you'll need to buy if you want to start a podcast. In this episode, I talk about why a great microphone is an essential investment for your show, and how much you'll need to invest if you want a great setup that will set you apart from other podcasters. My goal was to create a comprehensive podcasting equipment guide. I don't talk about every microphone, interface or pre-amp available, but I cover the essential pieces of gear you'll need to get started, and share what some of the best podcasters in the world are using to record shows. After listening, you'll know what the best options are for your budget. Key Takeaways: A great microphone is the most important piece of gear you'll buy. To stand out from other podcasts in a crowded market, you have to provide great content and high quality sound. Great sound quality makes your show easier and more enjoyable to listen to. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Make it a good one. If you have a tight budget, consider buying used gear online. When deciding which interface to buy, consider how many mic inputs you'll need. Always, always, always use a pop filter. Wear headphones to avoid causing echo from guests in your recording. If you're serious about making a great podcast and growing your audience, don't settle for the cheapest option. How to Stand Out in a Sea of Podcasts There are thousands of other podcasts vying for your listener's attention. To stand out, you have to provide great content, but you also need to have good sound. Great sound quality makes your show easier and more enjoyable to listen to. Attention to sound quality shows your listeners that you take podcasting seriously, which means they will take you seriously and be more likely to invest time listening to you. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Make it a good one. A Great Microphone Needs Less Post-Production Good mics require less post-production. Most recordings can be improved with post-production (noise removal, EQ, Compression, etc), but a great mic will require less post-production. If you're going to be podcasting, you can either hire someone to edit, mix, and master your show, or spend a little time to learn how to do it yourself. Cheaper mics just don't sound as good. They often have harsher high end, they sound brittle and don't have a good low-end (bass frequencies). A lot of people ask me, “What's the minimum I can spend to get started?” I don't want you to just meet the minimum. If you're going to do it, do it right. Get a great microphone as soon as possible. If you can't afford a decent mic, practice with what you have, but save money to get the mic you want. If You Have a Small Budget, Consider Buying Used Gear I understand that not everyone can spend $800 on a podcasting setup. When I started podcasting, I was using a Shure PG42 USB mic, but I wish I had invested in a better mic right away. If you have a small budget, I recommend checking out Guitar Center's used gear online, or checking your local music store for used gear. Make sure to save the receipts in case anything doesn't work, and make sure you buy from reputable sellers who offer returns if you're shopping on Ebay. If you have a tight budget, consider buying used gear online. Should I Buy a USB Mic, or a XLR Mic? One of the questions I often get asked about microphones is, “Should I get a USB mic, or an XLR mic?” If you're just starting out, and you want to spend the bare minimum, you can get a USB like the Audio Technica ATR-2100 ($60), or the Samson Q2U (also about $60). However, keep in mind that these are budget microphones, and will not give you great sound. Additionally, it's a pain in the butt to record multiple USB mics at the same, so if you plan on recording anyone else in the same place as you, go with XLR mics and an audio interface instead. If you want a good USB mic and are willing to spend a little more, check out the Rode NT USB mic. It's $170 but sounds noticably better than the cheaper USB mics. You'll also need to get a mic stand and a pop filter for each mic too: More on that a bit later. What about Dynamic vs Condenser? A dynamic mic will give you more mid-range warmth and has better off-mic noise rejection, so it won't pick up as much of the room sound or background noise. A condenser mic will give you more detailed recordings, but are often more sensitive than dynamic mics, so they may pick up more room echo and background noise. Dynamic microphones are usually a better choice for podcasting (there are a few exceptions, such as the Shure Beta 87A which is a condenser mic). If you're interested in learning more about dynamic vs condenser mics, check out 10 Statements on Condenser Microphones vs. Dynamic Microphones. The pickup pattern of the mic also affects how much background noise it'll record. Click here to learn more about microphone pickup patterns. XLR Microphones I love and recommend XLR microphones for podcasting. The microphone I use is the Shure Beta 87A. It's $250 new but you can find them used for less, and they sound great and pick up much less background noise then the other mics I've tested in that price range. If you're looking for an affordable XLR mic, you can't go wrong with a Shure SM57 or SM58. They sell new for $100, but you can find them used online for half that price. Pair a SM57 or SM58 with a simple USB interface (like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2), and you've got a great sounding, affordable recording setup. Recording On the Go If you need to record with multiple microphones on the go, the Zoom H4N ($199) is a great option. This is a small, handheld device that has 2 microphone inputs plus a built-in condenser mic on top. If you need more than two mic inputs, get the Zoom H6 ($399) instead. The H6 has 4 mic inputs in addition to a built-in condenser mic on top. Lavaliere Mics I don't have much experience with using lav mics, but they're commonly used on stages, and they can work pretty well if you're out and about recording interviews. If you're looking for a lav mic you can use with your smartphone, check out the Rode Smartlav ($80), which is an affordable option for recording to an phone. I took a listen to the audio, and it wasn't as high quality as more expensive lav mics, but it's more affordable and convenient for mobile recordings. USB Audio Interfaces If you decide to get a XLR microphone, you will need an interface to convert the analog signal from the mic into a digital signal that your computer can record. Most interfaces connect to your computer via USB, and the smaller ones use USB for power as well. When deciding which interface to buy, consider how many mic inputs you'll need. Things to consider: How many mics will you be using at the same time? If you're just going to be recording yourself, an interface with one or two mic inputs will work fine. If you're going to be recording multiple people in the same room, you'll need an interface with four or maybe eight mic inputs. How many headphone monitoring channels will you need? Most interfaces offer one or two headphone monitoring ports (so you can listen to yourself while recording, or run your computers audio out through your interface). If you need more than one or two headphone jacks, you may want to invest in a headphone amp that you can plug additional headphone lines into. The audio interface that I'm using to record this episode is the Scarlett 2i2 ($149). It's USB powered, has two microphone inputs, and a single headphone jack. Quick note: most interfaces will give you phantom power (or 48v), which is used to power XLR condenser microphones. If you're using a dynamic microphone, you won't need to use phantom power (in fact, make sure it's turned off before you record). If you need more mic inputs (or headphone jacks), you'll want to go with the Scarlett 18i8 ($299). This has 4 mic inputs and 2 headphone jacks. If you need an interface with 8 mic inputs, get the Scarlett 18i20 ($350). Even though this interface has a higher price than the others I've listed so far, I wanted to mention the Apollo Twin Solo ($599). It's not cheap, and this model only has two mic inputs, but if you want to invest a little more money and get a fantastic interface, check it out. Cables, Stands, Pop Filters, and Other Accessories If you go with an XLR microphone, you'll need an XLR cable to connect your microphone to your interface. I use the Monoprice 15ft XLR Cable ($10). It's affordable and works great. You'll also need a mic stand. I use a normal microphone boom stand like the Samson Mic Stand ($20), which works fine for most mics. I would recommend the standard boom stand for most people, but if you want to invest a little more money and get something nice, you could go with the Heil Sound PL-2T Overhead Broadcast Boom ($120. This is a swiveling boom arm that attaches to your desk, and is very convenient for moving the mic around to any position you want. I recommend avoiding any stand that sits directly on your desk. They may cause your mic to pick up any vibrations (caused by typing or bumping the desk), which will cause thumps in your recordings. A shock mount for your mic might alleviate that, but I recommend using a standard boom stand or a boom arm instead. Always use a pop filter. A pop filter diffuses and prevents plosives and sibilants, and lets you get closer to the mic which will make your voice sound more rich and warm and gives a sense of intimacy to your recordings. The Nady Pop Filter is $10 on Amazon and is a no-brainer (pretty much any pop filter will get the job done). Power Conditioner A power conditioner cleans and filters noise and hums that might come through your computer or interface's power supply. You might not need one of these, but if you hear a hum or buzz in your recording that you can't eliminate, try a power conditioner to see if it helps. I plug my computer and pre-processor into a Furman Power Conditioner ($55). Audio Pre-Processors You may have heard about the DBX 286 ($200) before. The DBX 286 is pre-amp, compressor, de-esser, and noise gate. It's a pre-processor used by many professional podcasters to improve the sound quality of raw recordings. If you are brand new to audio, you'll need to invest some time in learning how to use the various controls of this unit, but if you want to get even better sound out of your XLR microphone, it's a solid investment. If you decide to buy a DBX 286 or any other pre-processor or pre-amp, you'll need to buy an additional XLR cable to connect it to your interface. Headphones Headphones are essential for both recording and editing. If you are talking to someone over Skype and you aren't wearing headphones, the sound will come out of your speakers and get recorded in your track which will cause a really annoying echo (and ruin your recording). Wear headphones to avoid getting echo from computer speakers in your recording. The headphones I use and love are the Sony MDR-7506 ($85). If you want to spend a little less, there are a lot of other options, including the Sennheiser HD-280 ($69) and the Panasonic RPHJE120K Earbuds ($12) (fine for listening and even mixing). Recording Software After you buy your recording gear, you'll need to use some kind of software to record audio. If you have a Mac, Quicktime is an easy way to record an audio track. It should already be installed, so you can open it up, select your mic or interface and be good to go. You might also have Garageband included in your Mac, and that works fine for recording audio as well. Audacity is a free program that works on both Mac and Windows. Here's a short tutorial on how to record an audio track in Quicktime or Audacity. If you'd like to spend a little bit of money on a real DAW (digital audio workstation), Reaper is a good affordable option (both Mac and Windows, $60). I use and love Logic Pro X, and there's also Pro Tools or Adobe Audition These programs are more for the audio professional, someone who is going to be doing a lot of editing, mixing and mastering. If you plan on learning and doing the post production yourself, you should invest in one of these programs. Recording Skype Conversations If you're going to be interviewing someone or talking to a co-host over Skype, there are a few options for recording Skype calls including Ecamm Call Recorder (for Mac), and MP3 Skype Recorder (for Windows). I recommend that each person on the call record a track on their computer and then send those to the person responsible for editing (this is called a "double-ender"). You should also record the audio from the Skype conversation to have as a backup. You might also check out Squadcast.fm, it's a web app that makes it easy to record multiple people at the same time. It costs $20/month but does come with a free 14 day trial. My Recommended Setups If you're looking for the most affordable option, I recommend the Samson Q2U with a pop filter and mic stand. This will cost about $100. The setup that I'm currently using is the Shure Beta 87a and an Scarlett 18i8 interface, with a few Shure SM58 mics to have as backups. I invested around $500 for this setup (buying everything used), but it sounds great and I can record up to 4 people at the same time if I need to. If you're serious about making a great podcast and growing your audience, don't settle for the cheapest option. Consider waiting to start recording your podcast until you've saved up enough money to be able to buy the gear you want, so you can make a show that sounds good from the start. You'll thank yourself later, and your listeners will too.
