There is shame in admitting you've messed up, and it is indeed scary to be opening your wounded self to the rest of the world.  It is never easy to bare yourself in front of everyone. People have so many opinions about you, solicited or not. Judgment, ridicule, and what have you. Those are inevitable but still hurtful. But who doesn't have bad days? Even the best and the most successful of us are dealing with our stuff. Yes, showing one's vulnerability takes courage. But how much harder it must be if you remain in the false world of perfectionism? That's why we've got this diet mentality that leads us to the belief in restriction, control, and that feeling of scarcity. But there's a more sustainable way of dealing with all our imperfections. And the first step is asking for help.  Rachel Brooks is a fitness lifestyle entrepreneur, author, podcaster and speaker with a mission to empower women to become their best selves through the practice of creating a positive mindset, a healthy body and a soul filled with love and gratitude.  Erin Klein is the founder of Moms just Want to Have Son where her mission is to help women maintain their badass-goal-crushing self that can take on motherhood. Together, Rachel and Erin host the competent woman podcast where they show up as their true authentic, transparent and vulnerable selves and talk about everything including confidence, body image, relationships, business, finances, fitness, freedom, travel, and fun all rolled into one.  In this episode, Rachel Brooks and Erin Klein share their journey of overcoming imperfection, being hard on themselves, and getting comfortable showing that side of their vulnerability.  Their personal experiences led them to partner up, produce a show, and create a community where women find a safe space to be themselves. Not perfect but encouraging and empowering each other to become better and, most of all, confident even amidst troubles and weaknesses.   "It's a beautiful thing. Because when you could come full circle and stop that chase and stop feeling like you have to have that pressure nonstop, to be enough, to do enough, to have enough, and just lean into the current, this present, being you, then you feel like this ignition of confidence and self-worth and value." - Rachel Brooks   What you will learn from this episode: 02:09 - What Rachel does and how she helps women become holistically confident  05:55 - Erin talking about learning and growing with each other instead of doing it all on your own 08:28 - A funny story of how Rachel and Erin met and partnered up as hosts of the Confident Woman podcast 15:42 - Defining 'Confidence'  17:00 - Encouraging a revolution of more vulnerability and relatability 28:26 - Ourselves being the solution and the problem 32:25 - Reclaiming your life and reframing those beliefs 36:43 - How hard it is to be dealing with perfectionism 43:03 - Embracing freedom and flexibility 47:10 - The purpose of a confident woman collective    Connect with Rachel Brooks and Erin Klein: theconfidentwomanpodcast.com https://www.instagram.com/theconfidentwomancollective/ https://www.instagram.com/theconfidentwomanpodcast/   Connect With Leslie Thornton: weightlossalbany.com E: Leslie@LeslieMThornton.com Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

The simple act of asking LGBTQ youth, “how do you want to identify yourself? '' is already a big step towards making the world a better place for them. Another point of discussion that should be raised regarding this matter is mental health, specifically on how we can transform the culture of stigmatizing and victimizing these young people to one that simply recognizes them as humans, regardless of their Sexual orientation or gender identity.. The right questions to ask LGBTQ youth, alongside other related topics on their mental health, are what we discussed with Dr. Erin Klein and Dr. Karen Bernstein today.  Dr. Klein is a third-year pediatrics resident at Northwestern University - Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago while Dr. Bernstein is an Adolescent Medicine clinician and educator with special interests in adolescent reproductive health, adolescent weight management (including obesity and eating disorders), and adolescent primary care for underserved youth. [00:01] Dr. Erin Klein and Dr. Karen Bernstein Share Their Story With Us Erin and Karen talk about where their paths have crossed  Don't miss our discussion about “coming out” among the LGBTQ youth [07:32] The Right Questions to Ask  How “Queer” has been reclaimed by the youth of today Language is crucial  Ask kids these questions if you want to know more about their sexual orientation We discuss making the youth's identity “official” in electronic medical records (EMRs) Why confidentiality is a crucial factor for LGBTQ youth [17:24] Making Mental Health Services Accessible We have an interesting discussion about mental health among LGBTQ youth Are mental health services accessible for the LGBTQ youth? Advocacies don't always need to be big projects  Here's what Karen thinks  [27:28] How to Rally People to Join Our Advocacies Do you want to learn more about mental health among LGBTQ youth? Karen shares some resources you can check out now The initiatives of the American Academy of Pediatrics on LGBTQ issues Writing for publications is another powerful step to rally people and call on legislators [37:57] What Erin and Karen Will Say To Their Younger Selves Erin tells the young version of her that things will always get better  Don't miss Karen's message for her resident self   [42:24] Closing Segment   Final takeaways: Words do matter Don't make assumptions when you go into a room. Be open and listen Questions to ask and how to phrase them Many EMRs now capture sexual orientation and gender identity or SOGIE data to allow preferred pronouns and names. The mental health of our teens is critical. The current problem is stigmatizing and victimizing LGBTQ youth  Resources you can access now  Links below Consider hospital committee policies and EMR options. Reaching out to school boards can be powerful. It's living in a household or attending school or being in a community or society that doesn't affirm your identity that's more of a risk factor.” - Dr. Erin Klein “I think that Gen Z has taught us a lot on how to approach everyone with love and not put people in binary categories.” -  Dr. Karen Bernstein Email erin.e.klein@gmail.com to connect with Erin then kbernste@uic.edu to reach out to Karen. TODAY'S GUESTDuring high school Erin McKay Klein was your typical fun-loving, and out-going student. Never the top of her class but always doing decently well and managing to have a lot of fun in the process. Going into adulthood she knew she was expected to go to college, get a good, high-paying job... You know the rest of this story. And Erin followed that typical path with gusto, pursuing the major that she expected would bring her a great return on her college investment, economics. Problem was Erin is not at all the economist type. Unhappy with this choice she went from major to major, traveled down different paths looking for that thing that would help her be successful, but light her up as well. That relentless pursuit of the right fit led her to network marketing and a career that would totally change the trajectory of her life. Today Erin is happily married with a toddler and building a business around her passion for travel and women's mental health. She is the boss mama behind Moms Just Wanna Have Sun where she helps mamas reconnect to their hearts and souls as they pursue their own goals and dreams.  Listen in as we discover: 3 TAKE-AWAYS FROM TODAY'S EPISODE:1) What to do if you or your teen is an overthinker.2) How we define our own definition of success and how that shifts as you grow older and more experienced.3) Why parents must learn to embrace their teen's different path and accept that their child has decided to pursue their passion and not the paycheck. ERIN KLEIN CONTACT INFOIf you found this episode helpful today. I met Steve Larosiliere through a mutual friend and helped him explore getting his after school program into Chicago schools. Listeners will notice how authentic and self-aware Steve is. This episode is going to rock your world because we go deep into leadership … especially how to create great teams.   I admire so many things about Steve, but can you imagine when you were in high school ... if you created your own skateboard from scratch? what if you went on monthly skating, snowboarding or surfing trips? is there anything better than going on an over night trip with your high school peers … snowboarding for hours and writing the best personal essay ever for college?   Bio   Steve Larosiliere, is the President of STOKED, an award winning youth development program voted to the NY 100 (100 most innovative businesses in NY). Steve has been named Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Black MBA, Honored as a Hometown Hero, and given a Community Impact Award. His work has appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, ESPN, Huffington Post, Nylon Magazine, Fuel TV, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, and Transworld Business.   Steve speaks worldwide on the subject of youth empowerment, social entrepreneurship, and closing the opportunity gap, and action sports at places such as Do Lectures, Creative Mornings, Nike, Bloomberg, The United Nations, and various universities. Prior to STOKED, Steve began his career with an independent marketing firm that he cofounded working with clients such as Sony Music, Reader’s Digest, and Rock the Vote.   In this episode you will learn: trust … trust … trust you’re doing the universe a disservice if you’re playing small transactional vs transformative leadership don’t underestimate the value of spending time with people what hiring the wrong person does to an organization the reason you need coaching and mentors the story of starting STOKED the 1st step of leadership is self-awareness how to teach life skills through action sports learning happens in the classroom … development happens outside the classroom   Resources   Stoked website   Join the Stoked Igniters!   I did and you should too!   No more prisons   Losing my virginity   Connect   Email   FB   LinkedIn   Twitter   Insta   Do you need accountability? Epstein, Ph.D., is Senior Director of Curriculum Development of HighScope Educational Research Foundation.
