Future generations of Filipino youth, kung mapanood niyo itong video clip na ito, nais kong sabihing “patawad”. Bago ako magsabi ng paalam, gusto ko munang sabihing, patawad, mga anak. I know we left you nothing much to work with. We should be building a strong future for the Philippines, today. They said the new Philippines will be stronger. We were supposed to fight for your future, sadly, we failed. By the time you watch this, the legalization of divorce, same-sex marriage, and the SOGIE bill might all have passed in Congress. We failed. This is inspired by Prince EA “Sorry” video. - - -  You can help SUPPORT THIS PODCAST thru:  Shopee – Arugaan Online Shop:  Jay Aruga's Book "Conservative Ka Ba? After living in New York, London, and Manila, the former TV producer and now LGBT advocate Queenmelo Esguerra has resettled in Siargao, which has evolved from remote provincial backwater to a trendy, cosmopolitan surfing hot spot. Queenmelo, or Melo for short, tells Howie Severino what makes Siargao magical: the combination of natural beauty and an egalitarian vibe where rich and poor, native and foreign can freely play and socialize together. "When surfers go to the water, everyone is equal. It's just you and your relationship with nature," she says while dressed in her typical flowing kaftan and flamboyant shades. "They carry that attitude when they're on the ground." Queenmelo asserts that Siargao is one of the most open places in the country for the LGBT community. But she says the Philippines still has a long way to go in gender equality, citing the sleeping status of the SOGIE bill. Shortly after she moved to Siargao in 2021, Typhoon Odette struck. Queenmelo and a friend survived by taking shelter in a fire station. The next day, she swung into action, mobilizing friends to set up a relief kitchen that prepared hot meals for beleaguered islanders. Queenmelo has also helped rebuild homes and start community food gardens. Siargao people's response to their plight demonstrated their community spirit and further deepened their roots in their adopted home. As they rebuild, they have a chance to create a model for the rest of the country — in sustainable tourism and in socially just ways of relating to each other.

On the topic of success, Regal does not consider herself successful. She believes it's a long road ahead and mentions that it's the people you meet who will define your journey. To her, success comes with contentment and she is happy for the loving and supportful relationships she has. The conversation turns to culture, where Regal shares with us her past visits to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, and mentions a sisterhood city in Ayabe, Kyoto. As well as her passion for fashion, Regal wants to let the listeners know the warmth and positivity of the Philippines alongside the most beautiful beaches, women, foods, entertainment, and so on. The talk covers the TedTalk by Regal and explains the reasons masks people wear to survive, in this case for transpeople who it becomes more difficult to camouflage within a society with conservative laws and policies that restrict the freedom to be oneself as an LGBT individual. ~~~Atty. Regal Mendoza Oliva finished a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master in Public Administration at Silliman University. Took her Law degree from the University of San Carlos and passed the Philippine Bar in 2014. She began her career working as a case assistant in death row appeals for indigent prisoners in the state of California, served as a board member for the local chapter of a national organization to increase civic engagement amongst women, and later worked as a paralegal for a private civil rights litigation firm. Since receiving a master's degree in public policy from Mills College, she has largely focused on juvenile justice reform - partnering with communities and probation departments to prevent system-involvement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender nonconforming (LGB/GNCT) youth of color while improving outcomes for those already system involved. She has conducted national and statewide research on this topic and has published in numerous academic articles. She has trained and provided technical assistance to dozens of juvenile justice systems nationwide to implement SOGIE data collection systems and change culture for youth in secure facilities. Aisha has also served as an evaluator for community-based organizations that provide an alternative to incarceration for youth throughout the United States. Most recently Aisha has been hired to lead the implementation of federal standards that will architect the safety of 18,000 incarcerated adults and 1,000 detained youth in all of Los Angeles County detention facilities.

When it comes to LGBTQ youth in care, the data is heartbreaking.  Not only are LGBTQ youth over-represented in the foster care system, “12.9% of LGBTQ youth report being treated poorly by the foster care system compared to 5.8% of non-LGBTQ youth." These youth face a higher number of placements, are more likely to live in group homes, and often end up homeless.  LGBTQ youth in care also experience added trauma and are hospitalized for mental health concerns more than their non-lgbtq peers. The need for safe and affirming homes for these kids is crucial. Many in the LGBTQ community aren't aware that they can be foster parents. The simple act of asking LGBTQ youth, “how do you want to identify yourself? '' is already a big step towards making the world a better place for them. Another point of discussion that should be raised regarding this matter is mental health, specifically on how we can transform the culture of stigmatizing and victimizing these young people to one that simply recognizes them as humans, regardless of their Sexual orientation or gender identity.. The right questions to ask LGBTQ youth, alongside other related topics on their mental health, are what we discussed with Dr. Erin Klein and Dr. Karen Bernstein today.  Dr. Klein is a third-year pediatrics resident at Northwestern University - Ann & Robert H. In conversation with Laurah Arudi Maina, Kofi Yeboah and Emsie Erastus The Centre for Human Rights partnered with Paradigm Initiative in advancing digital rights in Africa through the Digital Rights and Inclusion Media Fellowship (DRIMF) that is offered by Paradigm Initiative. DRIMF is offered twice every year and is aimed at exposing the participants to the digital rights landscape and enhancing their knowledge and skills in digital rights in Africa. As part of the fellowship, the Centre for Human Rights'  Expression, Information and Digital Rights Unit offered an academic course on digital rights in Africa between March and June 2021. The Digital Rights in Africa course targeted participants from various countries in Africa and was delivered by renowned digital rights experts on the continent. It covered themes such as elections in the digital age, artificial intelligence, privacy and data protection, rights of vulnerable and marginalised groups as well as freedom of expression, access to information in the digital age. As part of the course and a contribution to the Centre for Human Rights' #Tech4Rights campaign, this episode discusses online violence sexual minorities. The Centre for Human Rights' 2021 theme, #Tech4Rights: Rethinking a human rights-based approach to new technologies in Africa, focuses on the intersection between technology and human rights. As part of the campaign, the Centre for Human Rights is running a series of activities that look into technology from the perspective of various thematic areas of human rights. The Digital Rights in Africa course is one of the activities that are aimed at advancing the #Tech4Rights campaign. This podcast episode is a conversation on confronting online violence sexual minorities.  In Africa, several governments have developed laws that criminalise LGBTIQ+ persons and infringe on their human rights. Laurah Arudi, an expert on SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression rights) and participants of the Digital Rights in Africa course who are also Paradigm Initiative Fellows, Kofi Yeboah and Emsie Erastus explore the rights of sexual minorities online. They discuss the concept of digital rights and how the existing regional and international human rights frameworks either protect or infringe on the digital rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, the opportunities presented to sexual minorities in this digital era and possible avenues that LGBTIQ+ persons should take when advocating for their digital rights. The discussion also elaborates on insights on how digital platforms have increased awareness of the plights of sexual minoroities and also contributed to a subtle change in behaviour. The discussants argue that, while the digital era has created an unconventional, yet effective conduit for LGBTIQ+ persons to mobilise local and international support, these platforms have also exacerbated tailored online abuse and attacks against sexual minorities. In other words, digital platforms have become a double-edged sword in tackling the digital rights violations of LGBTIQ+ persons in Africa. In light of these challenges, Kofi and Emsie proposed recommendations for advocacy approaches and underscored the persuasion of policymakers and governments instead of  focusing on sensitising individuals. They also underscored the need for aligning digital rights laws with international with international human rights laws. Emsie Erastus is an ICT researcher who is curious about the interaction between technologies and humanity and the autonomy, culture and how they intersect with digital technologies. Emsie holds an MSc in Media and Communications (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In 2019, Emsie received the prestigious Chevening Scholarship. She has worked as a newspaper journalist (nominated and won several awards), researcher, and gender analyst. Kofi Yeboah holds a is a technology inclusion advocate and his research interests include intersections of the internet, artificial intelligence and inclusion, and the digital divide in sub-Saharan Africa. Kofi participated in the Global Voices research team as a co-lead in a study  conducted a regional of Facebook's Free Basics app.  The study measured the app against collectively-developed benchmarks of usability, quality of connection, language and accessibility, content, and privacy/data policies. Kofi ‘s contributions on internet freedom and authoritarian technology have appeared in major international and local media outlets including Aljazeera, Democracy in Africa, Coda Story, Fast Company, and Global Voices Online.  His current research focuses on artificial intelligence and inclusion gaps. Kofi holds a Master's degree in Communications and Technology; a Certificate in Community-based Research and Engagement; and a bachelor's degree in Economics and Sociology. Laurah Arudi Maina is a passionate human rights advocate for social justice. She focuses on awareness-raising through researching, organising, advocating and implementing projects that seek policy reforms, equity, and the explicit inclusion and protection of all persons, specifically sexual minorities. Arudi holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Psychology from Kenyatta University. She also holds a Masters in Philosophy degree from the Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa program by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. Currently, she works with the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions. New research from ECPAT International shines a light on boys engaging in their own sexual exploitation by selling sex in Thailand. The report reveals a big knowledge gap amongst frontline welfare service providers, problematic beliefs and attitudes about male and gender diverse child victims, systematic victim-blaming, and an urgent need to adjust support services to fit boy survivors’ needs. In 2020, ECPAT carefully talked with 20 young people of ‘diverse SOGIE’ who are exchanging sex, to learn what their life is like. In this group, 11 young people identified their gender as male; six called themselves ‘ladyboys’; two identified as trans women, and one as ‘gender of the alternative.’ They were between 15–24 years old, and the majority migrated to cities from rural provinces in Thailand. The majority had been exchanging sex for over a year and around half started doing so while still children. The team at ECPAT also wanted to understand welfare service providers’ attitudes to working with boys and talked to 65 frontline workers in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Pattaya. This is what we found. What are the mental, social, and physical challenges of the transition? Is your body capable of transition? How can you help your friends and family transition with you? Why are pronouns important? When it comes to the subject of gender identity and expression, one hour is never going to be enough—let alone SOGIE and the whole LGBTQ+. But we are honored to have Arjhay Puod for a couple of minutes as our guest for our first release for 2021. In this episode, you'll either learn or be inspired, or could be both on what Arjhay has to share about his medical transition journey. Arjhay is a member of PFTM (Pioneer Filipino Transgender Men Movement), a community that advocates for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics. In this episode, we go through his transition journey and the role of his family during his transition. We also talked about the significance of pronouns and his experiences in growing up in a conservative culture. And to answer some of our curiosity, we also touched on some information about medical procedures, their possible side-effects, their costs, and the importance of doctor consultation before going through any medical transition. We have an important discussion today about LGBTQIA+ patients. Dr. Dan Shumer, Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Gender Clinic at Mott Children's Hospital, will join us to share his story about caring for his transgender youth patients. His observations are promising as the youth are now becoming more and more vocal about their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE). It is critical the healthcare providers understand the needs of this population. Creating a safe space in our practices supports not only the youth but also their families. Let's listen to Dr. Shumer and learn how pediatricians can care for transgender youth with compassion. Zerothreetwo Conversations: Interviews with the Creative Class

I started this interview with an apology. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about the LGBT community. All the more reason to talk to somebody to learn from. What are the issues plaguing the community? What might it be like to be in their shoes?   I first met Van Go in an Anthill shoot (thanks again Anthill!). Before the shoot started, they encouraged everyone to make introductions. As an introduction, Van said that he founded the Cebu Transman Equality and Awareness Movement. When he said that, I had no idea what it meant. The words just flew over me since I didn't know what Transmen meant. So I thought it would be a great idea to invite Van Go over to have a conversation.   In this episode, we talked about what it is like to be growing up Trans in Cebu, he explains the meaning of SOGIE, the most common questions he gets about testosterone, legal issues that faces the LGBT community, and much more.   Enjoy the podcast!   SHOWNOTES Transman Equality and Awareness Movement - Cebu, Philippines Anthill Jude Bacalso (Zerothreetwo Conversations episode) SOGIE Kristiane Lim (Zerothreetwo Conversations episode) Genderbread person Jake Zyrus Risa Hontiveros https://www.itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/ Sam Killermann       Where can you find Van? https://www.instagram.com/vanvincentgo/ https://twitter.com/vandomvincent https://www.youtube.com/user/TheVincentVan   This episode is sponsored by Qube Gallery. A progressive art space in Cebu, Philippines. Providing network and exhibit opportunities for contemporary artists with whom they work closely with and promote beyond the local reach. For more than five years, the gallery has mounted shows of engaging artworks and have also represented the Visayas region in various international fairs. Coming up in Qube is Mundane Rituals by KDLT. His works have been archival in nature, believing that in order to elevate people’s consciousness, mundane things and happenings around should be given high regard. His works delved much on his son, Elias, as his subject, by which he likened himself and retrospectively find parallelism and similarities in his growing up years. To date, Mundane Rituals pushes further the story of his son and that of his to own to what resembles and celebrates the familiarity of the common and ordinary experiences others have imbibed and practiced. It is the universality of those mundane activities that bind and connects him as one with the people, with every breathing and moving individual. Save the date for the opening reception of Kdlt’s ‘Mundane Rituals’ on August 23, 6:00 PM, at Qube Gallery.
