Bureaucratic Archaeology: State, Science and Past in Postcolonial India (Cambridge UP, 2022) presents a novel ethnographic examination of archaeological practice within postcolonial India, focusing on the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a site where scientific knowledge production intersects with state bureaucracy. Through granular analysis of ASI's quotidian operations, this monograph demonstrates how archaeological micro-practices materially influence the construction of political and religious identities, while simultaneously serving as empirical evidence in India's highest judicial proceedings. This unprecedented study illuminates the epistemological ecology of postcolonial knowledge production from within the bureaucratic apparatus itself. As the first book-length investigation of archaeological practice beyond the Euro-American tradition, it reveals how non-Western archaeological theory and methodology generate distinct forms of knowledge, thereby expanding our understanding of archaeology's role in postcolonial state formation. About the Author: Ashish Avikunthak is a distinguished scholar working at the intersection of archaeology, cultural anthropology, and avant-garde filmmaking. He is Professor of Film Media at the University of Rhode Island's Harrington School of Communication, where his research bridges theoretical and practical approaches to cultural production. His experimental films have been exhibited internationally at prestigious institutions including Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, and Pacific Film Archive, as well as major film festivals such as Rotterdam and Locarno. Eric Stark is a co-founder and President of Slate, a US-based company that simplifies social content creation for brands, making the process much faster. Winners of the 2022 ISC Sports Tech Company of the Year, they've been in business now for almost five years. Eric makes no secret of the fact that his business journey began as an NFL fan first and foremost. He rose through the NFL to become Director of International Marketing and Content Stratgey and also, Manager of International Content Strategy. His CV includes time with the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. But having worked for multiple teams, along with a business partner, he spotted a gap in the market and Slate was born. Eric gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Film & Media studies from UC Santa Barbara in 2012.   Eric Stark on getting into the Digital Sports Media Industry: "My first role out of college was with the NFL in a digital media capacity. I will say I joined the company and was interested in the role because of the NFL side not because of the digital media side and it was a good pairing because I quickly fell in love with the digital media side and specifically, how digital media and sports come together and that started my career. I have been in the digital media and sports world ever since, but really, I was just an NFL fan who had a best friend in college with a sister who worked at the NFL and I wouldn't stop bugging her, every other week, to say in touch and then an internship opened up and I got an interview and the rest went from there!"   Eric Stark on Slate's USP: When we started, it was about speed for sure. We started as a mobile editing tool only, and it really was about speed of turnaround, especially when you are in person at an event. But there is a need for all social teams across industries to just be more nimble. Yes, speed is part of that, but really it's just about being able to have an idea and to easily execute it and create content. There's a higher volume of social content that every brand needs to create and there are more platforms than ever that these brands need to create content for. That's only increasing and the need for short-form video content is only increasing and it's not easy to create this content. Teams have to use several different editing tools currently, like Premier and we are trying to make it easier for those teams to create that content without it having to pass through so many hands."   Eric Stark on where Slate goes in the future: "We are starting to grow more with college athletics in the US. A lot of universities are using Slate for their athletic programmes and a lot of them that aren't, I think will start using it eventually. Outside the US, we do have some Premier League Clubs and some other international football clubs and rugby and other sports that are popular in Europe and elsewhere, but there is still a lot of room for us to grow. I am getting more interested in Premier League and international soccer and did a lot of work there when I worked at the NFL with different teams in the Premier League and I think that sport continues to have a really bright future in the US and we are seeing it grow more and more. With the Premier League on NBC and the World Cup coming soon and I live in Portland, Oregon right now, a city which really cares about it's MLS team, so that sport continues to interest me and it's something I will follow."

In this episode, I sit with Rayna Lountzis Rayna is an entrepreneur, and a mother currently engaged in her Doctoral degree in film studies. She has not been diagnosed with any particular neurodiversity but suspects she has symptoms of ADHD. Her self-development journey started 3 years ago after which she also started her company, "Rayna Arts" last year. Rayna focuses on self-image because she believes authenticity is crucial. Authenticity involves showing up as yourself always, irrespective of the environment. She had to start removing the false ideas about herself to find happiness and a sense of fulfillment. Due to her neurodiversity, Sarah also has difficulty being herself completely but strives every day to attain the kind of freedom that comes with authenticity. Rayna works on a project called "Evolution Film" which addresses mental health and disability quality in the film industry. Most of the members are neurodivergent and from various backgrounds. The "Evolution Film" Project started with filling up the gaps in screenwriting jobs. The latest research shows that 9 out of 10 people in the film industry are either struggling with mental health or are disabled. However, some have not disclosed this due to the stigma. It should be noted that the nuance surrounding mental health often leaves a stereotyped picture of insanity. However, this is not always the case with mental health as there are mental health issues with not very obvious presentations. People need to understand that mental health conditions just need treatment like any other ailment without the stigma. A change of perspective can also be beneficial; shifting focus from what is undesirable to what is desired, while putting aside all the struggle, traumas, and emotions to reveal our true selves.Take Away from Evolution Film:  Events coming up on the 3rd of May and 19th of July are available on the website”. www.powervibe.club and www.evolutionfilm.orgCheck out "Care and Well-being in the Film Industry" on Eventbrite!Date: Wed, May 3 • 13:00 BST https://www.eventbrite.com/e/care-and-well-being-in-the-film-industry-tickets-615795239137?aff=eandAddressing Mental Health Symposium: www.amh23.org or to prSupport the showJoin, support, and access exclusive episodes now.Sarah is offering a six-week coaching program for neurodivergent and neurotypical professionals who want to improve their career prospects, business development and support with the PRINCE2 practitioner exam. Comedy is so frequently the topic of cultural dialogue, but it is rarely taken seriously as an object of study. Comedy Against Work: Utopian Longing in Dystopian Times (Common Notions, 2022) offers a major contribution to theorizing comedy but also thinking about the particular politics of the genre today. Work is a joke and often the butt of our jokes. Madeline Lane-McKinley argues that in comedy, we find ways to endure and cope with the world of work, but also to question the conditions of capitalist life. When work is slowly killing us and destroying the planet and, at the same time, something impossible to imagine life without, Lane-McKinley considers the possibility of comedy as a revolutionary practice. By appealing to laughter we can counteract many of our shared miseries under capitalism, including our relationship to work.  But to think through these revolutionary aspects of comedy, as a practice, also involves troubling comedy's relationship to the global right turn of the last decade. Stand-up comedy's claims to the artistic freedom of hate speech in comedy represent a fascistic current of our world today, blurring the boundaries between left and "alt" right. Against this current, Comedy Against Work draws from a tradition of feminist critical utopianism, Marxist-feminism, and contemporary cultural criticism to reflect on an anti-fascist poetics of comedy, grounded in a critique of work. In this conversation with host Annie Berke, Dr. Lane-McKinley discusses the origins of her project, her decision to include her own story and life in her academic analysis, and the comedic virtuosity of the feminist killjoy. Madeline Lane-McKinley is a writer, professor, and Marxist-feminist with a PhD in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is a founding member of Blind Field: A Journal of Cultural Inquiry. Her writing has appeared in publications such as Los Angeles Review of Books, Boston Review, The New Inquiry, Entropy, GUTS, and Cultural Politics. Ausdon is a graduate from California State University of Fullerton with a degree in Cinema & TV Arts with a focus in Screenwriting. His goals are to improve his craft on acting and become a director and producer in the future. Josdon Thong is an alumni of California State University of Northridge. If Genesis, according to British comedian and fan, Al Murray "were the progressive rock band who progressed", then Peter Gabriel, once solo, would be the one who progressed the most. Who would have thought listening to early Genesis would eventually take the listener to Senegal, Armenia, South Africa and beyond via the artistic endeavors of their former vocalist? This is a journey through Peter Gabriel's solo albums, his live recordings and soundtrack compositions. During his forty-year plus solo career, Gabriel has become a worldwide pop star with his early, self-titled albums and his seminal 1986 record 'So'. He's had hit singles throughout his career, including "Big Time" and the poignant "In Your Eyes". He also helped pioneer video creativity with the song "Sledgehammer". In doing so, he's reached beyond his progressive rock background to achieve a level of respect that other musicians from that genre could only dream about. You may have heard many of these songs before, but there's always something new to be found by digging in the dirt. This is the prefect guide to his music for new listeners and long term fans alike. Graeme Scarfe is a freelance writer. He was born in the 1960's, educated in the comprehensive system in the 1970's & 1980's and graduated from Bournemouth University in the 1990's. He's worked as a music journalist, sound recordist, stand-up comedian and Film & Media lecturer. He wrote the original screenplay for the 1999 British Horror film "Lighthouse" and the comedy novels "Arable Farm" and "Seagulls on Speed". Grame is married with two children and lives in Sussex. The ones we place high upon a pedestal, touting their business acumen and wisdom?  Spoiler alert: they're not perfect, nor do they try to be. In fact, eschewing perfection in favor of progress might be the secret to their success.  Here are three ways you can stop trying to be “perfect” in your career, and instead, make progress." Amy Blaschka (https://www.linkedin.com/in/amyblaschka/) has made a career offering “stories as a service.” From her degree in film to her three decades spent branding products, places, and people, to founding her strategic writing practice, Amy has always understood the power of weaving a compelling tale. She helps leaders craft their stories to communicate and connect better through concise and compelling ghostwritten social media posts. Amy also writes engaging, original, and authentic Career Stories for her clients, positioning them for success and changing how others perceive, pay, partner with, and promote them. In all her work, Amy provides her clients clarity of messaging to strengthen their personal brands and thought leadership. A longtime Leadership Contributor for Forbes, Amy covers personal transformation and its impact on career growth. She also regularly creates and shares original content on her active social media channels. Her career spans several decades and industries, but her goal has always been the same: to help her clients identify and communicate their strengths in a creative and highly appealing manner. Before founding her strategic writing practice, she spent a decade in the marketing and communications industry, beginning her career at Young & Rubicam Advertising and culminating as a branding consultant for international firms Landor Associates and Enterprise IG. During this time, she partnered with her clients to create, renew, and strengthen their brands. She then applied her branding expertise to the world of travel and tourism, where for over fifteen years, she led and advised destination marketing organizations in California. Her engagement within the tourism industry led to her involvement with the California Travel Association, where she served on its Executive Committee and board, as Chair of its annual conference, and leader of its statewide Ambassador Council. Her love of telling a compelling story can be traced back to her college years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film & Media from the University of California, San Diego with a minor in Communications. Is there a link between the colonization of Palestinian lands and the enclosing of Palestinian minds? The Palestinian Idea: Film, Media, and the Radical Imagination (Temple University Press, 2019) argues that it is precisely through film and media that hope can occasionally emerge amidst hopelessness, emancipation amidst oppression, freedom amidst apartheid. Greg Burris employs the work of Edward W. Said, Jacques Rancière, and Cedric J. Robinson in order to locate Palestinian utopia in the heart of the Zionist present. He analyzes the films of prominent directors Annemarie Jacir (Salt of This Sea, When I Saw You) and Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now) to investigate the emergence and formation of Palestinian identity. Looking at Mais Darwazah’s documentary My Love Awaits Me By the Sea, Burris considers the counterhistories that make up the Palestinian experience— stories and memories that have otherwise been obscured or denied. He also examines Palestinian (in)visibility in the global media landscape, and how issues of Black-Palestinian transnational solidarity are illustrated through social media, staged news spectacles, and hip hop music. Greg Burris is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Media Studies at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Kirk Meighoo is a TV and podcast host, former university lecturer, author and former Senator in Trinidad and Tobago. In this episode we speak with Bo Ruberg, who is Assistant Professor at UC Irvine in Film & Media. Their interdisciplinary research crosses media studies, queer studies, the Digital Humanities, cultural studies, and an engagement with computational fields. From 2015-2017, Bo served as a Provost’s Postdoctoral Scholar in the Interactive Media & Games Division and a member of the Society of Fellows at the University of Southern California. In 2015, Bonnie received their Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley in conjunction with the Berkeley Center for New Media and the Department of Women and Gender Studies. Prior to entering academia, they worked as a technology journalist, reporting on tech, video games, sex, and gender from 2005 to 2009. We discuss their books "Videogames Have Always Been Queer" (tiny.cc/e0zkjz) and the forthcoming "Queer Games Avant-Garde" (http://tiny.cc/2yzkjz). “Keywords in Play” is a monthly interview series about game research supported by Critical Distance and the Digital Games Research Association. As a joint venture, “Keywords in Play” expands Critical Distance’s commitment to innovative writing and research about games while using a conversational style to bring new and diverse scholarship to a wider audience. Our goal is to highlight the work of graduate students, early career researchers and scholars from under-represented groups, backgrounds and regions. The primary inspiration comes from sociologist and critic Raymond Williams. In the Preface to his book Keywords: a vocabulary of culture and society, Williams envisaged not a static dictionary but an interactive document, encouraging readers to populate blank pages with their own keywords, notes and amendments. “Keywords in Play” follows Williams in affirming that “The significance is in the selection”, and works towards diversifying the critical terms with which we describe games and game culture. I Want to Believe – Episode 13 PODCAST NOTES: On the Trail of… Champ Source: smalltownmonsters.com Small Town Monsters began as an independent film series exploring lost and bizarre history around the United States. Focusing on small town folklore, our team tells stories through the words and experiences of those who were most affected by them - residents and witnesses. On the Trail of… Champ On the trial of…Champ chronicles North America’s most infamous lake monster, affectionately known as “Champ”. Centuries of lore, sightings and mystery surround this creature as well as the lake it calls home. Shot on location at Lake Champlain, Vermont/New York, USA, On the trail of…Champ dives deep into the rich history of the region in connection with Champ, as well as Champ’s cultural impact in many of the rural communities that border the lake. Various eyewitnesses of the creature recall their encounters, including Sandra Mansi, who in 1977 took a photo of the creature considered by some to be the best evidence for any lake monster. Katy Elizabeth of Champ Search, as well as Scott Mardis & William Dranginis, comprise of research teams using different methods and state of the art technology to document and prove the existence of monsters in Lake Champlain. Their hunt for the creature takes them from the deep waters of the lake to its winding rivers and primeval swamps and marshlands. While definitive proof of Champ is yet to be claimed, the monster has certainly succeeded in captivating the hearts and minds of many people, whether witnesses, researchers or fascinated locals. These are their stories…on the trail of Champ. Now a good 6 years, nearly 100 podcast episodes (not including nearly 200 episodes of sister podcast At Eye Level and a good 50 of Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine, among others) and thousands of pages of print reviews of film, music, literature and audio drama later, we've come full circle, once again meeting up with Mike to catch up on what he's been up to all this time, his exciting new Blu-Ray restorations and discoveries of previously lost films in the Joe Sarno archive and partnership with Something Weird video to reissue and restore films from the likes of Doris Wishman and Barry Mahon, the changes and ongoing travails of the home media industry in the nigh decade since and much more! Join us for a Hendrixian "Slight Return", as we circle back, catch up and update listeners on the lay of the land here in mid-2017... Week 90 Mike Raso, Joe Sarno and Film Media - Slight Return
