In this powerful conversation, Steph is joined by Elliott Rae, speaker, podcaster, writer and social changemaker, to explore how masculinity is being renegotiated in today's world. They dig into how traditional gender roles are evolving, why relationships shift after having children, and the ways societal expectations impact men's mental health and fatherhood. They also discuss the influence of online culture on teenage boys, the lessons from the BBC drama Adolescence, and why open conversations (especially the messy, imperfect ones) are critical for change. This episode is an honest, moving and often funny look at how we can create more equal partnerships, raise emotionally healthy boys, and support men to step outside the outdated "provider and protector" model. Steph and Elliott reflect on friendship, community, parenting through adolescence, and how small changes in how we live, talk, and connect can make a huge difference - for men, for families, and for society as a whole.Elliott Rae is one of the UK's most prominent writers and speakers on fatherhood, men's mental health and masculinity. Elliott created the Parenting Out Loud campaign and culture change programme which has revolutionised the national conversation about working fathers. Through Parenting Out Loud, Elliott supports employers to build workplace cultures where dads can be loud and proud about their caring responsibilities at work.As an author, Elliott curated the bestselling book, DAD, and as a presenter, he fronted the seminal BBC One documentary ‘Becoming Dad' which was one of the 20 most watched documentaries across the whole BBC network in 2022.Elliott co-hosts the popular podcast, To Be A Boy, which is one of the top parenting podcasts in the UK and he has written for publications such as The Independent, The Telegraph and Grazia and frequently appears across the media, including a feature on Loose Women and regular contributions to Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio London.Steph's InstagramThoughtful gifts at Don't Buy Her FlowersThis episode we are proud to have an excellent sponsor:Sweet Freedom - award winning syrups and spreads, always sweet, always natural. This week on The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four offbeat cop films that have stuck with me over the years. These films can be funny, gritty, offbeat, and sometimes kind of chaotic in the best way possible. So what movies am I recommending?Running Scared (1986) – Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two wisecracking Chicago detectives. This one's got a great mix of comedy and action, and it leans into that mid-80s buddy cop energy without taking itself too seriously. Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” is on the soundtrack, which feels like a time capsule in itself.Miami Blues (1990) – Alec Baldwin in a role that's kind of hard to pin down. He plays a violent conman who ends up impersonating a cop. It's based on a Charles Willeford novel and keeps that oddball tone where you're not always sure if you're supposed to laugh or be disturbed. Fred Ward is great in it too, playing the worn-out detective trying to catch him.Freebie and the Bean (1974) – This one's messier than most cop movies, but it's intentional. Directed by Richard Rush, who also did The Stunt Man, it's full of reckless driving, dark humor, and strange tonal shifts. Alan Arkin and James Caan play the leads, and they're either chasing criminals or arguing with each other. It kind of laid the groundwork for a lot of buddy cop films that came later.Stakeout (1987) – Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez as partners on a surveillance detail that doesn't stay professional for very long. There's a good balance of suspense and comedy, and Madeleine Stowe holds her own in her first major role. It was directed by John Badham, who also did WarGames and Short Circuit, so the pacing is solid. If you're in the mood for movies where different type of cops break rules, hunt odd suspects or drive their car on the track of an elevated train, I think you will find something here you will like. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Almost one year ago I was scrolling through Instagram when I stumbled across a page dedicated to one of the many innocence style organisations that is dotted across the united states, setup in response to thee overwhelming number of people who are incarcerated for crimes they didn't commit. On the page there was a photograph of a young African American boy pictured with a big smile wearing a baseball outfit the name of that boy was Damian Skinner.... the story spoke of how Damian had been arrested tried and convicted for a murder in 1996, Damian had been convicted with next to no evidence, apart from a so called eye witness, who didn't even see the crime take place. He would tell police that he saw Damian in a car head in the direction of the crime and then moments later heard gun shots.Damian's older brother was a known gang member and he said that police believed he'd in fact committed the crime but with no evidence to arrest him they brought Damian in and told him he would need to testify against his brother or face prison himself. He refused and sealed his fate..Damian would spend the next almost 28 years fighting to clear his name without success. Eventually coming up for parole but was denied multiple times, the biggest hurdle was the fact that he was never willing to admit to the crime and thus in the eyes of the board he was not taking ownership or showing any remorse.however on his most recent appearance he would have legal representation and a strong argument was put forward and finally he was granted his parole...Almost 6 months later it's time to check in with Damian to see how he's doing as a free man. We've made a few jokes in past episodes about Michael McDonald popping up in unexpected places. It's an easy joke to make, because McDonald has a distinctive voice and has worked with a lot of artists covering numerous genres. But the man is talented - both vocally and on the keyboards - and his career has put him at the forefront of rock music for a long time.Sweet Freedom is a compilation album that explores McDonald's work from his first two albums plus a number of collaborations. The album title is taken from the track he had recently completed for the motion picture soundtrack “Running Scared,” a buddy cop comedy starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. After a troubled youth, McDonald began his music career in earnest as a vocalist and keyboardist for Steely Dan. After that he was tapped as keyboardist and vocalist for The Doobie Brothers, a position which would eventually lead to his fronting the band and turning it in a more soulful direction. In 1982 he started a solo career which would combine a soft rock style with his signature “blue eyed soul” sensibilities.Lynch is examining this “greatest hits” album with an eye towards some of the collaborations that have involved Michael McDonald, many of which are signature anthems and ballads of the early 80's soulful catalog that will eventually become known as yacht rock.We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast! Sweet FreedomRod Temperton, known for his work with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, composed this single. It is a bit of a departure from McDonald's typical style with its upbeat melody and horns. It went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and of course became the title track for this compilation album.Yah Mo B ThereThis song is a collaboration with the late James Ingram which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written and produced by Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton, the song was originally a more contemporary Christian song with the title "Yahweh Be There." Ingram suggested the title change, opening up the lyrics to more ambiguity to fit a wider audience. On My OwnA number 1 song from the Billboard charts in the US, this track finds McDonald paired with Patti LaBelle on a breakup duet. Interestingly, the two recorded their tracks completely separately, and did not actually meet until they performed the song together on The Tonight Show in 1986.I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)This song peaked at number 4, and was McDonald's first success as a solo artist. It was a cover originally sung by Chuck Jackson in 1962. McDonald's version features his sister Maureen providing backup vocals, adding familial harmony to the mix. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme to the television game show “Card Sharks”This game show originally ran on NBC from 1978 to 1981, and returned for a second iteration to CBS in 1986. STAFF PICKS:Too Late by AsiaRob leads off the staff picks this week with a track from Asia's third album, “Astra.” John Wetton returned to the group after a brief separation in late 1983 when he was replaced by Greg Lake for tour dates. Steve Howe is replaced by Mandy Meyer for this third Asia album.Goodbye by Night RangerBruce brings us the last top 40 hit (to date) by Night Ranger. Drummer Kelly Keagy takes lead vocals on this Brian Blades-composed power ballad written after losing his brother to a drug overdose. “It's hard living life on this memory go-round.”Walk Like An Egyptian by The BanglesWayne's staff pick is the best known song by the group. Songwriter Liam Sternberg took inspiration for this song from a rough trip across the English Channel, when his fellow passengers were walking carefully with their arms outstretched due to the choppy waters. It would become a number 1 single, and Billboard's number 1 song in 1987.These Dreams by HeartLynch closes out the staff picks with as song that emerged from a collaboration between Bernie Taupin and Martin Page. Taupin originally envisioned it as a song for Stevie Nicks, but after she turned it down, the song was restructured for Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Nancy Wilson takes lead on this song dedicated to her friend Sharon Hess, who had lost her battle with leukemia. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Shade Gate by HawkwindThis instrumental appears on Hawkwind's fourteeneth studio album, which was inspired by the works of fantasy novelist Michael Moorcock. The buddy cop action-comedy movie hit its heyday by the end of the 1980s with genre-defining box office winners like "48 Hrs." and "Lethal Weapon." The formula is pretty straightforward - two wise-cracking detectives, who share almost nothing in common, team up and face a barrage of messy violent drama before coming together to fight the bad guys and save the day. This formula has proven to be effective, resulting in a lot of success, with occasional bright spots in the modern era. In 1986, a year before "Lethal Weapon" changed the game, director Peter Hyams directed this 80s flick starring two up-and-coming actors of the day, dancer Gregory Hines, and comedian Billy Crystal. Although the film didn't make any significant impact on cinema and has become largely forgotten, it remains a quality example of the genre and an entertaining film with a solid story and a memorable cast. So jump in the spray-painted unmarked police car, don't lose your pants, and crank up Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Gerry D from "Totally Rad Christmas" Podcast and Nicholas Pepin from "Pop Culture Roulette" Podcast I discuss “Running Scared” from 1986 on this special replay episode of the 80's Flick Flashback podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Ray and Danny were targeted by two muggers, it was obvious that the thugs were not experienced in their field. If you closely observe the tall thug in the black leather jacket, you will notice that his "pistol" was actually made up of a piece of wood with a metal rod that was kept in place by electrical tape. After returning from Florida, Ray wears a Tampa Bay Buccaneers hat. At the time the movie was filmed, the Buccaneers and Chicago Bears were division rivals. I'm racing to write and record this for you in the moments before my second surgery. But before I go in, I want to tell you something odd.Cancer has been good for me.I can't lie. In the first 24 hours, I journeyed through some very difficult feelings relating to my mortality and how that would impact my three children. I let those feelings truly sink in and tenderize me. That felt important.I recognize not everyone will agree with this take, but when it entered other people's lives, I'd always thought of Cancer as an important messenger. So when it knocked on my door, I wanted to fully receive my message. What came up for me was grief. So much grief. This made a lot of sense. See, before I was separated from my husband, my mammo was all clear. So The Big C came on after the separation. I will spare you divorce details, dear reader, but ever since my husband moved out of our home, my focus has been on keeping things steady for the children. I wake them up the same way, I put them to sleep the same way, the breakfast and dinner tables are set the exact same way, our vacations haven't changed. No matter what shit storm is happening behind the scenes, I've kept it all Steady Eddie on my end. I rarely let myself grieve the dream I had for our family. I wanted to be the face of resiliance. The all powerful Momma. After all, if I fell apart, it would make everything so much worse for them, right? Maybe. Maybe not. It doesn't matter. I didn't fall apart. That's the path I chose. And so, perhaps, that's why Cancer chose me. Again, maybe. Maybe not. This is how I see it. How many women do you know who've gotten some form of female cancer during or just after their divorce? The unprocessed grief takes a toll in my opinion. So diving into and sitting with that abject grief felt important to me.In meditation, we stay with the breath. But when a very big wave of feeling comes, we release the breath and stay with that feeling and allow ourselves to feel it fully.Just after the diagnosis, when I felt that grief come on, I allowed it to engulf me (when my kids were at school and asleep, of course) and eventually, it passed. When I allow hard feelings to come in full force, they usually pass through me within 24-48 hours like a rough storm. I suspect I will weather many such storms during this process Today, I have another surgery. They didn't get it all the first time.I fall into the 10 percent who need a second surgery. Some people would call that unlucky.I see it differently. I am lucky. They caught the problem.Out, out damn spot.Whether the source of the proverbial spot is the divorce or something else, I don't really know. Whether I will ever fully get it out, I don't know that, for certain, either. But I am committed to the exploration and understanding of my internal life in tandem with the exploration and understanding of my physical body. I believe the two are linked. Many people use the phrase, Fuck Cancer as a source of strength to fight the disease. I don't gain strength from that personally. I do see the Cancer as a toxicity that needs to come out, but it feels like emotional waste for people who have gone through something hard. So Fuck Cancer feels, to me, like being mad at your bowel movements.

This is the album that turned heavy metal into pop, or started the hair metal genre of the 80's. Slippery When Wet was the third studio album by Bon Jovi, and would be their best selling album to date. The band was David Bryan on keyboards, Tico Torres on percussion, Alec John Such on bass, Richie Sambora on guitar, and Jon Bon Jovi on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.Bon Jovi deliberately targeted a mainstream audience with this album. They wrote 30 songs and auditioned them to teenagers in New York and New Jersey. The album's songs were then ordered based on the opinions of this teenaged focus group. The band collaborated with Desmond Child, a hall of fame songwriter who wrote songs like "I Was Made for Loving You" by Kiss and Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You." Slippery When Wet would be the top selling album of 1987, and would go 12x platinum. It would also make Bon Jovi the first glam rock band to have two number 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 with "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer."Bon Jovi - the band, and Jon Bon Jovi as a soloist - would never leave the rock pantheon A-list after this album. Raise Your HandsJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this one. It was the B-side to "You Give Love a Bad Name," and was not released as a single. If it sounds familiar you might be remembering it from a scene in the Mel Brooks film "Spaceballs."You Give Love a Bad NameThis is the first single from the album and would hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1986. Child, Bon Jovi, and Sambora re-wrote the song which started as a song for Bonnie Tyler called "If You Were a Woman (And I was a Man)" The video was directed by Wayne Isham, who was also directing videos for Motley Crue at the same time. Motley Crue felt betrayed that Wayne would direct a Bon Jovi video, since they were competing with each other at the time.I'd Die for YouThis song is a deeper cut with keyboard work reminiscent of the song "Runaway" from their first album. Wanted Dead of AliveThis track hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and uses old west imagery to describe the lonely life of a rock star. Bon Jovi and Sambora would perform an acoustic version of this tune on the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, and would inspire the network to create their "MTV Unplugged" series. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Glory of Love by Peter Cetera (from the motion picture The Karate Kid part II)This solo song from Chicago front man Peter Cetera was on the charts after being featured in the 1986 summer sequel starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. STAFF PICKS:Wild, Wild Life by Talking HeadsWayne leads off the staff picks with a critically acclaimed song from the Talking Heads album, "True Stories." The song was featured in the film "True Stories," a satirical comedy directed by David Byrne, front man for the Talking Heads. This was the third and last top 40 hit the band would create.Higher Love by Steve WinwoodBrian's staff pick is Winwood's first number 1 hit in the United States. Will Jennings wrote the lyrics, inspired by his experience with church in the deep South. Chaka Khan provides the backing vocals, enhancing the gospel feel of the song - a modern day hymn.Sweet Freedom by Michael McDonaldRob's staff pick was featured in the buddy cop movie "Running Scared," starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. This was the last top 10 hit to date for McDonald. In addition to his solo work, McDonald has worked with many musicians including Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and most famously as lead vocalist for the Doobie Brothers, with which he is touring today.Venus by BananaramaBruce finishes the staff picks with a number 7 hit from an English pop group formed by the trio of Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward. The original was released in 1969 by Netherlands group Shocking Blue. Bananarama began covering this song when they first formed in 1980, but didn't release the single until they had recorded original songs so they would be taken seriously as musicians. COMEDY TRACK:Big Fat Blonde by The RainmakersThe Rainmakers released their debut album in 1986. One of their fans was horror novelist Stephen King, who quoted the band's lyrics in some of his novels.

Absolutely!Dr. Shirley Ann Wilson Moore is author of Sweet Freedom's Plains: African Americans on the Overland Trails, 1841-1869, the book on which my latest Tales post, Black Americans and Covered Wagons, is based. Dr. Moore's book and her research for the National Park Service are changing how the American public understands 19th century Westward Migration after all the misimpressions left by Hollywood Westerns.Recently, I sat down (via Zoom) with Dr. Moore, and this is our interview, in downloadable audio podcast format. Our chat is also available on video at this link. You can also read it below as an edited transcript. TRANSCRIPTEdited for clarity.Annette Laing: Welcome to Non-Boring History. Today we're going to be talking about a truly fantastic book. It's Sweet Freedom's Plains: African Americans on the Overland Trail from 1841 to 1869, written by Shirley Ann Wilson Moore. This is an academic book, but please don't stop watching, because I do think this book engages an awful lot of people outside of history departments. I'm delighted to say that today I have with me Dr. Moore herself. She holds a PhD in American history from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a professor emeritus at California State University. Sacramento. She's a specialist in African-American history and especially African-American women in the West. She's the author of three books, including this one [for which Dr. Moore won the 2019 Barbara Sudler Award for best non-fiction book on a western American subject authored by a woman.]Dr. Moore has also written numerous articles, essays, and book chapters, and she has served as a consultant on projects for the public, including with the National Park Service, as well as on various documentaries. So with that, thank you very much for joining me at Non-Boring History today, Shirley.Shirley Moore: Well, it's my pleasure and it's delightful to be here. So we'll have to live up to Non-Boring History, right?Annette Laing: Exactly! We're two historians. This is not a good start. We will do our best!So who were they? Who were the African American folks who went West?Shirley Moore: You know, that's a really good question. As to numbers, I don't think we'll ever establish the numbers of black people who went West. I've seen estimates from 5,000 to 50,000. So we'll never know. Because officials who were in charge of census taking of the travelers, those who were enslaved, their owners didn't refer to them or count them for anything other than black, or black woman, black man. They were ignored and discounted. So we'll never know the numbers. However, one thing we have to understand, and probably most people don't think that in the pioneer days, the wagon train days, that African Americans were involved at all. That is not the case. Black immigrants, travelers, were involved in every aspect of that process from start to finish. And they were not all enslaved. Many free blacks came. So their invisibility doesn't stem from the fact that they weren't there. They were seen as inconsequential. So that's why this cloak of invisibility surrounded them, as far as whites were concerned,Annette Laing: The knowledge that most people have of the wagon trains is based more on 1950s westerns than anything. Most people haven't a clue, starting with the fact that people were not traveling in the wagons, but walking next to them. What makes black folks' overland journeys especially significant?Shirley Moore: That's one of the questions I set out to explore in Sweet Freedom's Plains. What I discovered is that many blacks came West for similar reasons as their white counterparts. You know, the West was the land of starting over, in the popular imagination. It was a place where you could reinvent yourself, a place where you had greater freedoms. That was in the popular imagination, and certainly African Americans held to those reasons. But especially those who are were enslaved, and those who were restricted by black laws and Black Codes--even if you were free in the so-called free states and certainly, in the slave states, if you had a free status, that meant very little-- were hemmed in by laws. You had no political status. You had no citizenship status. So it was tough for even free Blacks, in free states and certainly in the South. They came West seeking relief from those conditions. The title of the book, as a matter of fact, came from an old abolitionist hymn, you know, abolitionist words, from the anti-slavery movement, grafted onto hymns. The title is from one of these abolitionist hymns called The Flying Slave. One verse in that hymn says "Behind, I left the whips and chains. Before me, lay sweet freedom's plains." That's where the title comes from. That alone was, you know, worth the discovery. I knew when I heard it, that would be the title for the book. I knew it.Annette Laing: So when people embarked full of hope on this journey west. . . I mean, this, we know, was not an easy journey for anyone . . .Shirley Moore: For anybody.Annette Laing: What specific challenges did black folks run into?Shirley Moore: As I said, they were counted whether they were free or enslaved, They were counted as non-people. Many wagon companies had in their charters provisions that restricted them from taking on Black travelers. Even if they could pay, they weren't allowed to be on those [wagon] trains. So, once they could secure passage, either by paying or working, they had to wait around those jumping off towns longer than their white counterparts. They had to figure out where they were going to stay as they waited, that kind of thing. So from the beginning, even before they hit the trails, this was the dilemma that white travelers, white overlanders, didn't face. And on the trails, they were, of course, as slaves, required to work. Everybody worked under horrific conditions that we would just shudder at. But for Blacks, they had no choice. They were on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They did the most onerous, difficult work possible. There is one company, these were the so-called Mississippi Mormons, that made the journey in two stages, coming from Mississippi. There were a number of Blacks in that company, and one of the leaders of the train recorded that everybody suffered the terrible cold conditions. They suffered terribly but, as the person, whose name escapes me, writes in his journal, the Negroes suffered the most. And several died and were buried along the trail. It was commonplace for slaves to be worked in horrific conditions. And throughout the slave states, slaves, especially in the wintertime suffered from pneumonia. They called it . . . Oh, gosh. I forgot the name. It's in the book, so look it up! [laughter] So, they suffered from this, and they were routinely expected to die. So, this was a burden. They were routinely expected to be, as I say in the book, pack animals.Annette Laing: But at the same time, one of the things that really came out in the book to me, and I'm thinking here of people like George W. Bush, who's handing out loans and things . . . There was this sort of crucible on the overland trail. Maybe you could address that.Shirley Moore: One of the reasons, you asked me why did they come West, one of the popular notions about the West was that some of these racial proscriptions could be left behind and capability and ability and prowess could trump those racial categories.Bush, who was a free black man, and he left with his five sons, and his wife who was white, left Missouri, he epitomized that. George W. Bush --that improbable name! His chronicler and friend wrote in journals that George W. Bush was the most capable man he'd ever met. He not only financed several of the company members who were cash-strapped, because he was a successful farmer, and businessman in Missouri. He also bought wagons for them, provisioned their wagons, and so on. And when they were going through starving times, he taught them to hunt small game, and he was the provider. So he's an outstanding example of that notion that ability could at times overcome those stigmas. That was on the Trail. Now, when he made it to his destination in Oregon Territory, he was not allowed to own the land that he had homesteaded. And so the US Congress had to make a special petition for George Bush to own these lands up in the Puget Sound area. Bush is a fascinating story. This book is full of stories. It's full of footnotes, dense, wonderful footnotes . . .(laughing) But you can ignore those. You don't have to read them.Annette Laing: Don't worry, audience!Shirley Moore: Yeah, don't worry. Don't let that scare you off the stories. I like to think that this book is full of stories that Hollywood hasn't even tapped into. Real life.Annette Laing: That's absolutely right. I mean, there are so many. And it complicates things, doesn't it? I've asked you to do this interview in such a short time, and we can't just reduce it to "Did they get there, and everything went great or not?” Because it's impossible, right?Shirley Moore: It is impossible to do that. But the complications, the complexities, the nuances of this whole journey, that's what makes it so interesting to me.And I think your viewers and listeners would be interested to know that these overlanders in this timespan I'm looking at weren't the first Blacks in the west. You know, you had black mountain men, black guides, for whom this was their territory. And I talk about that in the book. I think that in the complexity and the complications, that's where you get the real stories. Once Blacks set out on the trails, took first steps on the trails, whether they were enslaved or free, they knew something had changed. And there were Blacks who, and I call them facilitators, who never made the Overland journey, but were very, very instrumental in allowing it to happen, in facilitating it. One such person was a man by the name of Hiram Young. He was a former slave. He didn't know how to read or write, but he rose to be, I think, the third wealthiest man in in Missouri. He was based in Independence, Missouri. He came up with a wagon [design]. The wagon was the iconic symbol, right, of the overland trip of pioneer days, of westward migration? [Young built] a wagon that was preferred by most overlanders. They called it, in short, the Hiram Young wagon. And it was lighter, smaller, just easier to work with. He had plaques put up on the wagons that bore his name. But he didn't stop at that. He had a business conglomerate in this jumping-off town of Independence, Missouri, where everybody came to provision themselves, to get supplies. He supplied them from his farms. He had cornered the market on yoke making. Oxen were the preferred mode of force pulling the wagons, so he cornered the market on oxen, yokes, wagons, food. He had farms. He was an interesting, interesting person, Hiram Young, because he employed slaves from the surrounding area, Missouri being a slave state, and gave them a working wage. His thought was that they can buy their freedom just as he did, and perhaps buy one of his wagons, and head West. He also employed white workers, and let some of them board in his home, which was breaking every racial taboo at the time.Annette Laing: Like the white Irishman that you mentioned. Shirley Moore: Oh, yes. And so Hiram Young was a facilitator, and I don't think people associate the iconic symbol of overland immigration with a Black man. You know, he made it, and he sold wagons to anyone who could purchase them. One of his contemporaries said that you could see Hiram Young wagons on the trails from Missouri out to California and beyond, that's how popular they were.Annette Laing: He's mentioned in Independence, which is where I first learned of him. But this is news that is just not trickling down into schools. You know, I mean, I talk about westward migration, I talk about Hiram Young in schools. And this is all kind of news to people. Have you seen some progress with, you know, certainly with the National Park Service.?Shirley Moore: Yes. Yes, this book actually started out as a report. The National Park Service contacted me and asked me if I'd be interested in writing a report, so they could update their materials on the various trails and their various facilities, update that signage, and update the language. And I thought, well, it's intriguing. I, like everybody else, didn't know much about the Blacks on the Overland trail, but I completed that report and they were pleased with it. But I knew, as I was working on the report, there was much more to be said about this, and that's what sparked me into continuing to this book. The National Park Service wanted to make changes and be more inclusive, and I know there's a hunger out there, as I've gone around and talked about these issues. People are hungry for it, from grade schools to adults who haven't been in school in a very long time, to everybody, and it strikes a chord because it is such a diversity of experience. We can't talk about the Black overlanders' experience because they had some things in common, but they had such different experiences.Annette Laing: You bring that out so, so well. This is a really compelling set of stories, and with really fascinating overarching arguments. You know, I have deliberately limited our time, which I hate, because I could really have this conversation all day.Shirley Moore: We could!Annette Laing: So we really have to have you back. But I want to thank you so much, Dr. Moore, for taking the time out to talk to me today.I just want to remind everybody that Sweet Freedom's Plains is available in libraries, for sale in independent bookstores, and on A____n, the online store we don't talk about. I do recommend this book, and I don't recommend all academic books for a popular audience. So once again, thank you, Dr. Shirley Moore.Shirley Moore: Thank you so much. Next time I come back, I have to tell you about the two Black women who were kicked out of the wagon train, a super story.Annette Laing: I want to hear that, and I also want to talk about the cover, and your interviews you did with people, and you name it! Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal play two wise-cracking Chicago cops who are trying to take down the local drug kingpin played by Jimmy Smits...But honestly….the plot doesn't really matter in this as it's ALL about the chemistry between our two leads, along with some very memorable action sequences. This ‘80's action romp is directed by Peter Hyams while also starring ‘80's mainstays Dan Hedaya, Darlene Fluegel, and Steven Bauer – it might very well be among the best buddy cop movies ever!Host: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/

Con él graban el sencillo "Think It Over / My Joanna Needs Tunning". The team goes the Behind the Veil of the newfound freedoms we are enjoying as COVID restrictions are being lifted across the USA. Envoy talks about the many similarities of today and the 1920's following WWI and the last pandemic of the so-called Spanish Flu. The Roaring 1920's was a decade that featured economic prosperity and carefree living for many. One hundred years later, we are at the dawn of the next Roaring 20's, but this time, we will see the roar of the Lion of Judah where age-old prophecies manifest in this season of the latter rain. Ever wonder if you are truly free in life? I would think most of us are not. The majority of us conform to societies ideals and become something we were not meant to be. Who are you? Who am I? Questions like these arise when the idea of finding your true self, being free, comes to mind. This episode features a book "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz and honestly I feel like this book is a staple in my library so I recommend you getting this book as well. This episode is more so a rant about my lack of personal freedom and the thought of it so again if you're ready tune in and let's educate each other! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yasukeson/support

Drew and Dave discuss like gentlemen an 80s classic hit, Sweet Freedom by Michael McDonald. They also discuss the Lost Prophets singer (seriously, Google him, you will instantly feel better about yourself), Paul Rudd is an ageless wonder and can you woo woo woo? Also, we frown upon dancing on the ceiling. Sometimes. We will also discuss whether or not this song will make Dave dance, and Dave also owns 0 pairs of sweatpants while Drew might need to be forcefully removed from his. I haven’t met a person yet who hasn’t had some kind of struggle with developing and sustaining healthy eating practices, and Ricki Heller is no exception. As she describes it, she grew up with the ultimate junk food diet – TV dinners, mac & cheese, and lots of baked goods. Which was fun until it wasn’t! Eventually, she developed Candida, which is an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast we all have in our bodies. At normal levels, this is ok… overgrowth, however, can make you very, very sick, as Ricki experienced and describes in today’s episode. It was truly debilitating. Her path forward was either an extremely restricted diet or be very, very ill. What would you choose? Surely, this is one of those “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” experiences. Ricki learned to cook with healthy, nutritional, whole foods from scratch and has developed significant expertise in developing recipes that she’s published in cookbooks and through her blog. Taken a step farther, she’s shared what she’s learned about how one can create and sustain a healthy eating plan through one-on-one and small group coaching programs. She says it’s important to create boundaries and stick with them. The key is to make the choices for the healthy options so routine, so habitual that they simply happen in the moment and you don’t even have to think about them; this is an auto-pilot program that works in our favor! The key, however, is getting to the root of our thinking about food, the relationship we develop with it over the course of our lives and understanding what triggers we encounter that can send us down unhealthy paths. In her mind there are three key ideas or actions to take: Address the food itself and eliminate what is bad for you; become aware of the habits we form around eating and certain foods; and learn to recognize the emotions we have around eating and certain foods. When you understand the triggers or initiating events, then you can make more mindful choices about what will truly feed and nourish you. Ricki is a wealth of information on this topic, so settle in and get ready to learn! Ricki’s Bio Ricki Heller, R.H.N, PhD, is a healthy eating coach, educator, writer and whole foods recipe developer. She helps people with dietary restrictions love food again without feeling deprived, so they can focus on healing and focus on living their best lives. Through her coaching and online programs, Ricki shares her passion for living well without sugar, gluten, eggs, or dairy and teaches people how to thrive no matter their dietary restrictions. She is also the author of four books, including Sweet Freedom, which was recommended by Ellen DeGeneres, and the bestselling guide and cookbook, Living Candida-Free. She contributes frequently to various magazines and websites, as well as appearing regularly on TV and podcasts. Ricki is also a dog mom, pop culture fanatic, and die-hard chocoholic. She lives with her husband and two fur babies, Chaser and Zoey, just north of Toronto. Episode 041--Dealing With the Root of Anger (Dan & Susan Young) If you or someone you love have issues you haven’t seemed to be able to get a handle on, even with traditional counseling, this podcast will help. If you have unresolved anger issues, this is a must listen. Dealing with the root of any issue will get us there faster than anything else. God loves to reveal the source of our anger and help us deal with it. The root has likely blocked the truth of who God is and how much He loves us and is available to guide us. Dan Young was a client who did a remarkable job of following my lead as a coach. When Susan, Dan’s wife, first told me that he wanted to do a freedom coaching session, I wasn’t sure. I had never coached a man before and had been taught that women coaching men wasn’t a good idea. However I had coached Susan and she would sit in on the coaching sessions with him, so I agreed. I knew Dan had some issues with anger he was trying to work through and I wanted to help him. So I told Susan we’d see how it worked out. I was amazed by several things about Dan. 1. His eagerness to get rid of his issues. 2. His ability to not try to figure out everything God was showing him, but just to speak out what he heard God say or what he saw or felt. From that point we could go forward asking God to help us understand more of what the words or images Dan saw or heard meant. Dan and Susan Young have been married for15 years. They are retired and live in Jacksonville, Fl. Family Life Weekends to Remember are a passion for both of them. They have been volunteer prayer warriors for that organization’s local events for 14 years. At this time I have limited Freedom Coaching spots but I also use the process we discuss on this podcast to coach members of my Overcomers Christian Weight Loss Academy during our live monthly calls. The process is also outlined in my book Sweet Freedom and Sweet Freedom Study Guides. I have a couple of courses on this available in Overcomers Christian Weight Loss Academy. What comes to mind when u picture people in the Bible? Archaic, unrelatable stories? perfection beyond reach? When u take a look at the characters in the Bible and emerse yourself in their story, you see people. People like us. Flawed. Headstrong. Humble. Caring. Awful. Saved. Transformed. People. Inspiration. Moses. David. Daniel. Peter. But how about Queen Vashti, Ruth, the Shulamite Woman, Aquila, Priscilla....Jonah... God's Word is deep and rich and full of so many everyday extraordinary characters. In episodes 11-19, we asked the question "What character in the Bible do you most admire or relate to?" Here is an audio collage of the answer to that question. Praying that we all find a new joy, as we revisit the characters in the Bible that we sometimes misjudge or overlook. Greg Leon was born on May 19, 1958 and grew up in Glendale, CA, a foothills community of Los Angeles, and immediately made an impact on the blossoming live hard rock scene of Hollywood's Sunset Strip in the late 1970s. Primarily playing guitar and handling vocals, the acts that he fronted were Suite 19, with future Great White/Dokken drummer Gary Holland and then future Motley Crue drummer, Tommy Lee and the Greg Leon Invasion, with bassist Joey Vera (later of Armored Saint, Fate's Warning and Anthrax) and drummer Carl Elizondo (later of Jag Wire, and playing under the stage name Carl James). The Invasion would release the "Every Time" b/w "Stay With Me Tonite" 7" single with Vera on bass who was fired when it was discovered by Leon that he had been moonlighting with Armored Saint. Vera's replacement, Chuck Stevenson and Elizondo played with Leon on the Greg Leon Invasion picture disc released by Azra/R2R in 1983. He took the place of Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot, and as the pre-George Lynch guitarist in Dokken. (Don Dokken has since made the group's first EP, which graces Leon on the cover, available for download to the public). During this period Leon also had a considerable local reputation as a guitar teacher, working at Rhoads' mother's guitar studio in Burbank. Leon had several incarnations of the Invasion and played with various LA acts after his exciting early days. Leon also had a brief time with Greenworld Records' Midwestern act Vyper, while at the same time gathering a name for himself as a guitar amp modifying specialist. In the late 1990s, Leon fronted a band called Wishing Well which also featured Survivor drummer Marc Droubay and English-born bassist Stuart Brooks (ex-Black Cat Bones, Leaf Hound, The Pretty Things). The trio released their eponymous debut album in 1997. By 2003 Leon was back on the LA club scene under the name The Greg Leon Invasion, featuring Boston-born bassist George Roelke and Ohio-born drummer Greg Stevens, taking the group for a European festival tour in 2005 on the strength of new recordings, coupled with the myth related to his name. The line-up also performed July 13, 2007 at the annual 1980s-era hard rock music festival, Rocklahoma. In 2008 former White Lion drummer Greg D'Angelo replaced Stevens in the band. Leon is married with Canadian singer Suza Wood and in 2005 he produced her first album titled Sweet Freedom.

Do the 7 Day Paleo Reset! Breaking Free From Sugar Addiction "We confuse a full belly with a nourished belly. You can actually have an empty belly and not be hungry because your body is nourished; you can also have a full belly but your body is still hungry because it's saying, 'feed me more nourishing foods; I'm not getting what I need.' " - Sherry Strong In order to be prepared to break free of your sugar addiction, you first need to prepare yourself with the right habits, tools, and resources. You can't just go cold turkey. Some easy ways to prepare yourself for this big moment can include: Take care of the environment: not just the earth but yourself and your home life setting environment as well Be conscious of what foods you buy Slow down and take it one step at a time Be kind to yourself and others Spend time in nature by walking around etc. Build a positive, growth mindset One Meal At A Time: Sherry Strong At TEDxTokyo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8u3q8hZtfo Sweet Freedom 7 Day Challenge Sugar is a DRUG Did you know that sugar lights up the brains dopamine receptors 8 times more than cocaine? Hey kids! Do you like violence? Do you like several intertwining plot lines that don’t really go anywhere. How about casual racism? You get all this and a whole lot more in this one. It is just the regular crew this time around and we discuss three police centric films. First up, when two wisecracking transit cops encounter trouble with an arsonist, a rapey railroad men, gangsters, a fiery Latina…….had to take a breath. Too many conflicting plot points in Money Train from 1995. Next up, when 2 spunky Chicago cops are at odds with a drug kingpin, they have to battle the urge to kill the bad guy or possibly become deep sea fishermen…… All this and punker Joey Pants in Running Scared. Finally, when a mad bomber is loose in New York City, it’s up to Sly and Billy Dee to take down the bad guy and possibly hit a disco after. All this and Sly in drag in Nighthawks! Music “Long Train Running” performed by The Doobie Brothers “Sweet Freedom” performed by Michael McDonald “Nighthawks Not My Home : Wufgar’s Folly ” words and music by Jim Croce.
