Did you know that 58% of global school age population are not attaining minimum proficiency levels in Reading and Math? That amounts to 357 million children. Of these 137 million children will reach the last grade of school and still not reach the minimum proficiency levels. The percentages are much higher for low income countries as opposed to high income countries. In this episode we celebrate Erin Ganju, Managing Director of Echidna Giving Fund, which invests in organizations advancing girls' education in lower-income countries. Prior to her role at Echidna Giving, Erin turned a bold idea for advancing literacy and gender equality into an international NGO: Room to Read. Erin was a Co-Founder, former Chief Executive Officer, former Chief Operating Officer, and currently remains an Emeritus Board Member of Room to Read. During her tenure, Room to Read helped over 12 million children in 15 countries pursue a quality education. Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, they develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond. Erin co-authored Scaling Global Change: A Social Entrepreneur's Guide to Surviving the Start-up Phase and Driving Impact. The book is a how-to guide for social entrepreneurs who have a vision to change the world and need a strong organizational foundation to do it, utilizing Room to Read as an organizational case study. Erin was selected as the World Economic Forum's Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur (2014); recognized as a Global Impact Featured Member for 2017 by the Young Presidents' Organization; and awarded the Women's Bond Club Isabel Benham Award (2014). We talk about her journey starting up, learnings from across different countries and some insights on balancing scale and depth (quality). Note - Conversation recorded over Zoom. On this special episode Trevor and Shane are joined by Rik Ganju composer and multi-intrumentalist of Ganfunkel. Ganfunkel is a Musical Collective that defies genre but has elements of jazz, industrial, world, and EDM. This latest EP is a two song work titled "God's Creation". Despite the fact that these songs are instrumental, the music speaks volumes about the chaos of our world today and touches on wildfires, covid 19, and our political climate with a saxophone as the central protagonist amidst this disorder. Rik shares his vision for these songs, but more broadly speaks about the balance between his classical training and his intuition and ways that they work together but can also be at odds with one another when tapping into the magic that makes something just work. Though lyrics often play a central role in Shane and Trevor's musical deep dives, this exploration was a very rewarding look into how the music itself can tell a story...and how that story can speak differently to one person or another. You can find Ganfunkel's music wherever you get your tunes, but is also featured as the outro to every Album Divers episode. Links:ganfunkel.com facebook.com/Ganfunkel

Synaptics just made a hefty acquisition if you’re a player or follower of the IoT space. The company acquired the Wireless Connectivity division of Broadcom. To understand what that means and how it can affect the embedded space, I invited Vineet Ganju, a Vice President at Synaptics as my guest on this week’s Embedded Executives podcast. The biggest takeaway for me is that this space is about to get a little more interesting.

Daniel Muggleton (@danmuggleton) chats to comedians from around the world about moving to the UK to try and figure British culture out. This week I chat with my very, very good friend and triple-threat Rohan Ganju (rohan_ganju)! Why a triple threat? He's a citizen of Australia, The UK & USA. Currently living in Melbourne, I get his first impressions of British life. We talk about living on a canal boat in London, preconceptions about English people, being from Hove-actually rather than Brighton and where he could see himself living as a working comedian. If you like the pod, please review us on iTunes and subscribe because we don't publish episodes at the same time every week (sorry). Also get around us on Twitter @TheUnionJackOff. Daniel's special 'Let's Never Hang Out' is available now on Amazon Prime around the world, if you enjoy him on the podcast maybe give it a listen?
Anikate is in the Penn State Car Club. In this podcast episode, Aldrich and Anikate talk about cars, culture in the Penn State Car Club, diversity issues in college, and Penn State THON. How do you know when to pivot and follow a passion project? Can you align your work with a greater purpose? Erin Ganju did just this when she made a pivot from the for-profit sector to the nonprofit sector. She is a social entrepreneur that started out in the financial industry and then moved on to co-found Room to Read. It was here that she honed her social entrepreneur skills as she moved from CEO, COO, to Emeritus Board Member. Erin is the author of Scaling Global Change which is a how to guide from start-up to scaling and driving impact. In this episode, we talk about finding ways to create change, being a leader, knowing when to pivot, building a team and collaboration, having great mentors and role models, and creating the change you want to see. Erin shares so much knowledge and wisdom in her own authentic way. Show Notes [03:37] Erin started out in the financial world at Goldman Sachs and now she's the managing director of the Echidna Giving Fund and a Co-founder, former CEO, former COO and Emeritus Board Member of Room to Read, an organization that believes World Change Starts with Educated Children. [03:55] The connecting line through her career is working internationally and finding ways to create change. [04:43] It's important to help people see how wonderful it is to invest across our borders and look at our world more holistically. [05:36] It's a common theme in many sectors to see women drop out as you move up the ranks. [05:50] Erin enjoyed being in a dynamic group of men and women, but she decided to take another path. [06:22] During Erin's career change from the for-profit to the nonprofit sector included an aha moment where she questioned why she was working so hard for causes that she didn't care deeply about. [06:50] She decided that she wanted to align her work with her values. She decided to pivot into the social sector. [06:59] Erin believes education is the great equalizer and wanted to provide education for children no matter where they were born. [07:28] Scaling Social Change is the how to guide to turn something that you deeply believe in into something that can really scale. The key behind the book is that it takes building a strong organizational foundation. [09:06] You also have to focus on your operational excellence. [10:17] Hiring top talent is a challenge for social entrepreneurs. [11:04] Founder's syndrome can be a huge issue. It can be hard to delegate. [12:03] Erin stepped down as CEO of Room to Read last year and let the first non-founder CEO take over. [12:57] You need to compellingly explain the problem and tell your story and how it connects with the world. Make it personal and connect it to the global. [15:30] Organizational fit is very important. [17:37] Understand what is and isn't working using data. [20:07] Interacting through social platforms helps connect conversations. [24:51] Great leaders know when to step down, it's about the bigger cause. [26:20] For Erin, female mentors and role models were essential. [28:06] Success for Erin has been about seeing her place in a dynamic team and creating impact. [30:26] Collaboration is natural for people. Women sometimes need to take more credit for what they do. [34:30] In the social sector, you can share emotions and be authentic. People trust the leader more when they are authentic about their cause. [39:23] Tap into the positive such as focusing on education being about the future. [40:23] Erin and her team are creating an open source database that is mapping around girls education. It's amazing what technology can do when it comes to making connections. [41:35] Social media can be important in terms of telling your story, but you need to cut through the noise. [42:49] Take risks. You will never succeed if you don't try. Take the less traveled path. You can also join forces with an established organization collaboration is important. In this in service Dr. Stephen Price and I discuss the relationship between mental illness and violence and delve into our experiences with this population. According to the Department of Justice violent crime has been decreasing since the early 1990s. Although there is a statistical relationship between mental illness and violence, only 4% of all violent crimes are committed by persons with mental illness. Conversely, persons with mental illness are at high risk for violent victimization. Despite this violent crimes involving persons with mental illness are over-reported. Research indicates that mental illness only needs to be mentioned in news stories for people to infer that there is a causal relationship between the two. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
In this episode we hear from Siddha Ganju, data scientist at computer vision startup Deep Vision. Siddha joined me at the AI Conference a while back to chat about the challenges of developing deep learning applications “at the edge,” i.e. those targeting compute- and power-constrained environments. In our conversation, Siddha provides an overview of Deep Vision’s embedded processor, which is optimized for ultra-low power requirements, and we dig into the data processing pipeline and network architecture process she uses to support sophisticated models in embedded devices. We dig into the specific the hardware and software capabilities and restrictions typical of edge devices and how she utilizes techniques like model pruning and compression to create embedded models that deliver needed performance levels in resource constrained environments, and discuss use cases such as facial recognition, scene description and activity recognition. Siddha's research interests also include natural language processing and visual question answering, and we spend some time discussing the latter as well.
Skyforest Public Access RSS We talk to Monk Jonas about the Ganju's five DVD set that could change your life forever.
Skyforest Public Access RSS Welcome to the second installment of Skyforest Public Access. On this episode we speak to Monk Ben of the Ganju’s Buddhist cult, the local pizza place is thinking of burning down, and the Skyforest farmer’s market returns, but only if you’re deemed worthy enough to attend.
This week Murphy is joined by mates guys Simon Carter, Rohan Ganju, and Joseph Green to drink Hahn Super Dry and discuss Mexico, libraries, Barney Gumble, water, China, smoothies, Simon's friend Bob, Coca Cola, Joseph's dad, New Years Eve, Pure Blonde, Geelong, Tom Keele, sugar, and more!
Erin Ganju of Room to Read is a social entrepreneur breaking the cycle of poverty for millions.
In this episode, I talk to my old friend Nick Ganju about ping pong, poker, hit songs, and tackling my most feared subject: math. He makes the complex seem simple, which is a rare gift. Nick is the founder and CTO of ZocDoc. As CTO, he is responsible for overseeing all software development. It's a huge job for one of the fastest-growing startups in the US, and he's repeatedly proven himself to be a master teacher. All show notes, links, resources for this episode can be found on www.fourhourworkweek.com/podcast. Scott chats with Nick Ganju CTO of ZocDoc on how he's building his business with BizSpark and ASP.NET. Does he use Open Source? When do they write their own libraries and when do they buy? What kinds of issues does a .NET startup run into when hiring?
Bleach Volume 7: The Entry. Directed by Norikyuki Abe. Series Composition by Masashi Sogo. Published by Viz Video, List Price: $24.98. Ichigo is finally able to make a cannonball, the art needed to pierce the shield surrounding the Seireitei, the fortress of the Soul Reapers. He is able to do this after getting a few pointers from Ganju. He was the last one of his group comprised of Orihime, Chad, and Ishida that had yet to master it. And he still hasn't. While his cannonball packs a lot of power he lacks the skill needed to keep it under control so it tends to explode in his face. Nonetheless, time is running out for Rukia, and the group must rescue her before she is executed. Things don't go as planned when the cannonball gets stuck in the Soul Reaper shield, which causes it to explode and seperate our heroes. Chad and Yoruichi are by themselves, while Ishida is teamed up with the ever stumbling, ever ditzy Orihime. Ichigo lands with Ganju by his side, and they are the first to have to fight Soul Reapers, as they face off against the psychotic Ikkaku (he's not crazy, he just really likes to fight) and the overly vain Yumichika who is all about his looks. Even though both of them seem to have some major psychological hangups, make no mistake, they are deadly fighters, and perhaps too powerful for Ichigo and Ganju to handle. You knew that Ichigo and friends were never going to make it to the Seireitei without getting seperated didn't you? Of course they had to be split up. It wouldn't have been any fun if they had arrived en masse and just started slugging their way to the tower where Rukia is being held. No, they had to be split up so their powers could be diluted and they would have to face foes whose powers might be stronger on an individual level. Through these battles we get to see if our main characters have indeed grown stronger or whether they've just been talking the talk. It's great to see them all rise to the challenge, albeit in very different ways. For example, Ichigo relies on his enormous spiritual energy and his enemy's tendency to underestimate his skills while Ganju uses his speed, wit, and guile to fight. Volume 7 of Bleach was quite good in spite of the fact that maybe some of the fights were a bit too long. But Noriyuki Abe keeps you engaged with some very well orchestrated battle sequences, choreographed with little or no static action lines. He always keeps a sense of coolness about the characters as he reveals their new powers with dramatic relish. My Grade: A
