This episode we are going to talk about the work I do to prevent sex trafficking and domestic violence. I, Adrienne Livingston, am a co-developer of the Girl Empowerment Curriculum along with Michele Lathrop. We created this curriculum to serve as a resource for churches, Christian schools and nonprofits to use to educate and address the underlying issues that impact girls today and make them vulnerable to the lures of traffickers and pimps. The curriculum includes discussing our image in God, our identity, personal boundaries, intuition, red flags, using our voice, healthy and unhealthy relationship characteristics, safety planning, basic physical self-defense, and more! We've been invited to share this curriculum resource with secular communities as well. Prevention is a public health approach that complements a criminal justice approach to preventing and ending human trafficking [1]. Tania Redeau, WorldVenture Girl Empowerment Coordinator joins me on this episode to ask me questions about this program. She is newly joining my team!    Learn more at https://www.justicehopefreedom.com/resources.  To sponsor a podcast, email me at a.livingston@worldventure.com or to donate click here.  Go to https://justicehopefreedom.com/ to learn more about fighting and preventing sex trafficking. As a teacher having seen even just the tip of the iceberg of the trauma of looked after children, any organisation or individuals championing these young people get all my love. This is not an easy conversation and it touches on topics that make people feel uncomfortable but it is important. Okela is very thoughtful and this is a super edited version of a conversation of over an hour. We as a community or a country will always be measured by how we treat our most vulnerable people and in my book, care affected children fall into this category. I refer to the prison statistics - children in care are less than one per cent of the population yet 25% of the homeless population and the prison population have spent time in care. These are children who we have failed. Social media is not set up to drive thoughtful and meaningful discussions and there is a gap for women to have a space to call their own. In episode 16 of Art of the App Podcast, Naama Barnea-Gorly shares the importance of building a community of girls and young women to talk peer to peer or seek advice for generations ahead of themselves. We also discuss how you can join Girltelligence and become a leader for other women seeking advice or guidance. Naama Barnea-Goraly M.D. received her medical degree from the Hebrew University and Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem, Israel, and her clinical training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as a postdoctoral neuroimaging research fellowship at Stanford University. She then went on to work as an instructor and brain researcher at Stanford. Her research on brain structure in disorders affecting social cognition was published extensively in leading psychiatric and neuroscience journals, and presented in international conferences.  In the course of her work she became interested in gender equality and the importance of supportive authentic communities, especially for girls and women. This led her out of the lab and into the real world to found “Girltelligence”, an empowerment app for teen girls and young women to find a supportive community, and resources to support their mental health and to help them reach their full potential. Some of the things Naama and I discuss: The new things that our younger generations have to overcome with the rapid change and growth in technology. Teaching young men to be allies from a young age. How Girltelligence keeps its users safe and provides inclusivity for all. Applying for grants and the hurdles a startup must overcome. Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive inspiration from founders and investors shaping the future.Thank you for listening! If you enjoyed this episode, take a screenshot of the episode to post in your stories and tag me!  And don't forget to subscribe, rate and review the podcast and tell me your key takeaways!CONNECT WITH MICHELLE CHERIAN:LinkedinInstagramFacebookFree Gift: Checklist for Creating and App with SuperfansWork with Michelle Cherian CONNECT WITH NAAMA BARNEA GORLY:Email: naama@girltelligence.comWebsiteInstagramLinkedin

149: Tracy Perlman: NFL Senior Vice President of Football Communications and Marketing, working in football operations, talks about her over 27 years of NFL experience as a woman in a male-dominated multi-billion dollar arena and building the NFL Legends Community.    Tracy Perlman  Tracy Perlman has had multi-facilitated and invigorating career in the National Football League. She talks about her navigation process, going from college to the NFL. “I started at the NFL the day after I graduated from college. It was literally my 22nd birthday and it was the day after graduation and I walked into an office. It felt very ‘mom-and-pop.’ I say that meaning, it felt like I walked into a family atmosphere. When you start at the NFL working where I did, I worked in HR, and people say, you worked in HR? But the job was called a ‘floater.’ So, I was able to work in every department at the NFL over a span of 10 months to try and really understand it, and a floater was essentially a temp. So, whenever someone was out I would sit in that department and work in that department for however long necessary. So, for me, it was a learning experience and I got to really understand the NFL, the way that it functioned, what all the departments are.”   On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Tracy Perlman about the expansion of her career at the NFL for over 27 years, in such a massive economic ecosystem. “I don’t think people understand how much it takes to put on the National Football League. You’ve got a PR department. You have a media department. You have NFL Films. We didn’t have the network or the website at the time, because it was so long ago. You have an HR department. You have a broadcasting department. So, I was able to work in all of these areas and sort out where I really wanted to be. The thing about the NFL is, if you are passionate about what you do, and you really care about it, and you are learning every day, there is a way forward all the time.”   What You Will Learn:   What made Tracy Perlman zoom in on the marketing department? “After working for NFL Films for a while, working for NFL Enterprises, I ended up working in the Marketing and Sponsorship department and working on a lot of different things. I started to aggregate all of these things that no one was handling. So, we took over some of the promotional stuff. All of a sudden, who is doing all of the player appearances? Wait a minute, who is doing all the hospitality? We started to build this entertainment marketing area, and within entertainment marketing, I got to do everything from product-place merchandise in movies, to running the Draft Day movie, to the Broadway show Lombardi. But, I also started to work a lot with NFL players, both current and legend. As I started to do that, I realized, that is really where my passion was and working with players that inspire people every day. People don’t understand, a player is fighting for his job every single day.”    Tracy Perlman talks about the reverence she feels about working to create the NFL Legends Community. “The thing that I am most proud of is building the Legends Community. Not booking YouTube for Super Bowl Halftime or any of those other things. It is really building a program where I got to work with legends, where the NFL started to build a partnership with players, because we should be celebrating and honoring the men who built the game.”     What are some of the elements that make up Tracy Perlman’s sense of mission and purpose at the NFL these days? “I now run the entire player vertical so that once you have an engagement with the NFL, regardless of how old you, we want to make sure that you always have the best experience you can ever have, and that means, whether you are 6-years-old or 60-years-old. So, we want to make sure that when you start playing the game, being a fan of the game, that your engagement with the game is inspirational and something that you are always proud of.”   What is the focus behind the NFL Legends Community? “What we wanted to do is make sure there was continuity. We never wanted a guy to feel like the door closed. Our thought was, ‘once a player, forever a legend,’ and we decided that we couldn’t just create something. So, we brought 24 people who played the game to New York, including Chad Pennington, and Leonard Wheeler, and John Randle, and we sat in a room for six hours trying to sort out, what is this? The more we began to talk, the more it became completely apparent that the NFL’s relationship with legends was transactional. At the time, I think we were calling everybody ‘former players.’ It was transactional. It was, I have an appearance. Do you want to do it. Here is money, and then we probably wouldn’t talk to you for quite some time.”    From ‘Former Players’ to ‘Legends’    Tracy Perlman defines what makes the members of the NFL Legends Community elite. “The way we structured it was really to celebrate, engage, embrace, and communicate with every former player we could talk to, and the reason why we called it The Legends Community is simply because every player who has ever played this game at the highest level, is the top 1% . So, if you think about 100 years of NFL football, and only about 14,000 guys who played two or more seasons, and maybe 25,000 guys who played total, that is the top 1%. So, we wanted to make sure guys felt special. Which is why the word ‘legend’ is where we ended up.”    Exceeding Expectations   During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Tracy Perlman also explains the ways in which the growth of the NFL Legends Community truly exceeded her expectations. “We are actually at 10,300 registered legends in the community, and the thing about that that is important is they are actually engaging. Meaning, we send out a newsletter monthly; 70% open rate on the newsletter. Anybody who sends out emails and newsletters will tell you that is extraordinary. Last year 4300 legends went back to team events, 4300 guys. So, we are seeing the guys really engage. All of the use of every program has gone up. So, again, for us the idea is to help the transition out of the game to make sure that you understand the information, to make sure that you know that you can engage however you want, and to ensure that once you are engaged with us, we keep giving you relevant information and that it is clear.”  Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest for the Epilepsy Foundation: markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy-wb/ Tracy Perlman’s Linkedin: Linkedin NFL Legends Community: players.nfl.com

In this episode, Rachel and Erin get to chat with the lovely Kayleigh Hanlin. Kayleigh is the co-creator of two amazing things for young girls, J.O.Y. journals and Empowered Minds. In 2017 she started Empowered Minds with her mom, Cathy. This mother-daughter duo's mission is to assist young girls in building a foundation of self-love, confidence, and self-acceptance. The J.O.Y. Journal is designed for girls, ages 7-14, to discover their unique selves through engaging and guided activities. Kayleigh shares her story of how being born with a congenital heart defect and the obstacles that came with it allowed her to see things from a different perspective. And it was this that led her to creating the J.O.Y. journal. She wanted young girls to feel empowered about who they are and to have self-love. Rachel and Erin also talk with Kayleigh about the prompts within the journal. They realize that these prompts are great and not just for young girls. The prompts are to see the positive in yourself, to shut down the negative and reframe thoughts into ones of empowerment. Finally, Kayleigh tells the girls about the type of speaking engagements her and her mom do to empower young girls. She also talks about how creating a retreat for young girls and their female role models is the next big goal. Here are some highlights: Kayleigh's story Self-awareness and the victim mentality The impact of social media on young girls Kayleigh's love of chicken wings Let's take a listen! Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.

Everyone has heard the voice of his or her own "inner critic" taking pot shots at us during times of low self-confidence. For many girls and women that inner critic often mutters (or shouts) about how we look. A running internal monologue of body-shaming can become so ubiquitous we don't even know we're doing it. And yet, without awareness of this self-abuse, how can women truly gain the confidence we need to reach our full potential? How can we stop seeing other women as competitors in a universal beauty competition and start seeing them as friends, mentors, and sister in a support network? Annie talks with Naomi Katz, teacher and author of "Beautiful: Being an Empowered Young Woman", about Beautiful Project, her initiative to empower women to take action into our own hands, to understand that we are the builders of our culture and that we drive the changes that we wish to see, beginning with ourselves and echoing into our communities. About Naomi Katz (@ModelSelfEsteem) Naomi Katz is a writer and teacher and has been working with young women for over 15 years. She is the author of "Beautiful: Being an Empowered Young Woman", and founder of Beautiful Project, a curricular initiative dedicated to building self confidence among adolescent girls and young women. Her work is a call to attention, to recognize that we are the creators of our culture. She focuses on empowering ourselves to take action into our own hands, to understand that we are the builders of our culture and that we drive the changes that we wish to see, beginning with ourselves and echoing into our communities. learn more at http://BeautifulProject.net. What's wrong with three- and four-year-old girls prancing around in sparkly dresses and tiaras and dreaming the night away hugging a Disney princess doll in a real princess canopy bed? The problem, according to Rebecca Hains, PhD (author of "The Princess Problem: Guiding Our Girls Through the Princess-Obsessed Years"), is the way the "princess culture" suggests to girls that "most of their value comes from their appearance, while also feeding them stereotypes about race, gender, and beauty that they're really not equipped to handle at such a young age." Annie talks with Rebecca about how to raise an empowered girl in a princess world. About Rebecca Hains (@RCHains) Dr. Rebecca Hains is a children's media culture expert. She is a professor of advertising and media studies at Salem State University, where she is the assistant director of the Center for Childhood and Youth Studies. Her research focuses on girls, women, and media.
