How do I give my kids a leg up, but not two legs up on the couch? In this episode, Jeff and Kate discuss: Being all-in for the Kingdom, even when in secular spaces. Creating positive investing and generosity experiences from a young age. Avoiding Sudden Wealth Syndrome. Believing in your children and giving them agency. Fostering healthy money communication.   Key Takeaways: God can work in all places - not just holy places. Our brains are literally not built to take in large amounts of money at one time or handle the overwhelm of options that comes along with it. You need to understand that God owns it all. Your investments are a work that you do to steward the Lord's resources. There is blessing and struggle in empowerment. Deliver that to your children. Healthy family stewardship is built out of healthy communication.   "I really encourage families to think about giving their kids sums of money and not just controlled, restricted family foundation board seats or trust payments every year. For me, I've wrestled with it; I've been through hard things with it, but I have grown so much in having the stewardship agency that I do." —  Kate Gardner Episode References: UTMA & UGMA Accounts - https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/investing/utma-ugmaThe Gathering: https://www.thegathering.com/Gospel Patrons: https://www.gospelpatrons.org/ About Kate Gardner: Kate Gardner is next-generation philanthropist with a passion for holistic stewardship and community-building. Coming from a family business legacy, she focuses on ministry, investing, and helping other Next-Gens through a faith-based community called Magnify and running a podcast called Ascendants (with a book now as well!). She seeks to encourage other inheritors and business families to seek relational health, creativity, and purpose in the way they both wrestle with and embrace stewarding resources and "living a legacy.”  Connect with Kate Gardner:Website: https://www.magnifygeneration.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gratefullykate/Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ascendants/id1600096737Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DHC9ZDVY   Connect with Jeff Thomas: Website: https://www.arkosglobal.com/Podcast: https://www.generousbusinessowner.com/Book: https://www.arkosglobal.com/trading-upEmail: jeff.thomas@arkosglobal.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/ArkosGlobalAdv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arkosglobal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/arkosglobaladvisorsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/arkosglobaladvisors/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLUYpPwkHH7JrP6PrbHeBxw

How Financial Success Can Lead to Spiritual Failure with John Rinehart

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?" - Matthew 16:26In that verse, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, teaching them about the cost of discipleship and the value of the soul in contrast to worldly gains. The question remains: is there a spiritual cost to achieving financial success? John Rinehart joins us today to talk about it.John Rinehart is the co-founder of Gospel Patrons, an international organization dedicated to inspiring a generation of business professionals to fulfill their God-given callings. He is also the author of Gospel Patrons: People Whose Generosity Changed The World and 31 Gospel Patrons. The Hidden Danger of WealthFinancial success is often seen as a blessing, and rightly so—Scripture tells us that God gives both riches and poverty according to His sovereign will. We see many wealthy individuals throughout the Bible who were faithful followers of God. However, Jesus frequently warned His disciples about the dangers of wealth. In today's world, success is often equated with financial prosperity, but Jesus made it clear: “You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). The culture around us idolizes wealth, comfort, and possessions, making it easy to fall into a cycle where financial gain becomes the ultimate goal. This cycle can lead us away from God rather than toward Him if we are not careful. The Toxic Cycle of SuccessMany people approach work as a means to an end—a way to earn money so they can rest, enjoy life, and feel secure. This mindset, however, is not where the Bible starts. Instead, when we strive for success without keeping God at the center, we often fall into a dangerous pattern:We Work Hard and Prosper—Hard work leads to financial gain, which is a good thing. We Enjoy Comfort and Security—As success grows, we begin to rely on wealth rather than on God.We Forget God—The more prosperous we become, the easier it is to take credit for our success. We Fall into Sin—As self-reliance replaces trust in God, spiritual priorities take a back seat. This cycle is clearly seen in the Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:16-21). Jesus describes a man who builds bigger barns to store his wealth, thinking he has secured his future. But God calls him a fool because he was not “rich toward God.”Forgetting the Source of Our WealthThe warning from Deuteronomy 8:18 is as relevant today as it was for Israel:“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.' But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.”After 40 years in the wilderness, Israel stood at the edge of the Promised Land, facing a new challenge—not scarcity, but abundance. Moses warned them that prosperity could be more spiritually dangerous than hardship if they forgot the God who provided for them.Likewise, in our financial success, we must remember that wealth is not ours—it belongs to God. If we forget this, we risk placing our trust in material security rather than in Him.The Virtuous Cycle of SuccessSo, how can we succeed financially without failing spiritually? We must shift from a toxic cycle to a virtuous cycle—one that aligns with God's design. Instead of working for wealth and rest, we should begin with resting in God.1. Start with RestGod commands rest through the Sabbath, showing that we are not slaves to work. Taking time to worship, study Scripture, and be in community with other believers reorients our hearts toward God.2. Work as WorshipWhen we see work as a way to glorify God rather than just a means to make money, our labor takes on new meaning. We use our talents and skills to serve others and fulfill the good works God has prepared for us.3. Recognize God's ProvisionSuccess is not merely the result of our hard work—it is a blessing from God. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us that even the ability to create wealth comes from Him.4. Practice Radical GenerosityUnderstanding that our wealth belongs to God transforms how we use it. Instead of hoarding, we become generous stewards, using resources to care for the poor, support the gospel, and advance God's kingdom.5. Rejoice in Eternal ImpactWhen our work and wealth contribute to God's mission, our joy increases. We see our daily efforts as part of something bigger—something eternal.A Call to Purposeful LivingIf you are successful in your career, know that your work matters to God. You are not second-class in His kingdom. When you connect your success to His mission and live generously, you experience the greatest joy.Let's not fall into the trap of forgetting God in our prosperity. Instead, let's embrace a virtuous cycle of success—one where work is worship, wealth is stewardship, and generosity fuels the kingdom of God.For more insights, visit Gospel Patrons and explore the stories of those who have used their success for God's glory. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Should we rent out our paid-off home when we retire and move closer to family, or should we sell it instead?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly MagazineGospel PatronsGospel Patrons: People Whose Generosity Changed The World by John RinehartWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money (Pre-Order)Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Did you know that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the U.S. today? You might assume that we have a major anxiety problem just by the number of commercials you see for new medicines to treat these disorders, but is anxiety really a new thing? The Reality Of AnxietyModern medicine recognizes anxiety in many forms: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety, and various phobias. Data shows nearly a third of all U.S. adults will experience some form of anxiety in their lifetime. The cost of treating anxiety disorders in the U.S. runs into the tens of billions of dollars, with an even higher economic impact due to lost productivity. What causes this widespread anxiety? According to the Mayo Clinic, the causes aren't fully understood but likely include physical and mental health issues, as well as negative life events such as job loss or financial troubles. If you're struggling with persistent anxiety, it's crucial to see a doctor. Medication and counseling can be transformative.Jesus' Teachings On AnxietyDespite appearing like a modern affliction exacerbated by hectic schedules, technology overload, and perhaps even diet, anxiety is not new. We know this because Jesus addresses it in the Bible, particularly Matthew 6 and Luke 12.Matthew 6:25-26 says: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”Imagine the disciples traveling around Galilee and Judea, relying on donations for their needs. It's easy to see why they might have felt anxious about where they'd sleep or their next meal. Jesus encourages them to have faith. In Matthew 6:31-33, He says:“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?' or ‘What shall we drink?' or ‘What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”Resisting The Love Of MoneyJohn Rinehart, founder of Gospel Patrons, explains that Jesus aims to free us from fear and anxiety to be distinct from the world. The world often idolizes money and seeks comfort and security through wealth. While financial planning is important, it shouldn't be for the sake of leisure alone. Rinehart notes that the world is preoccupied with wealth, which can be perilous for Christians.Jesus warns of this temptation, emphasizing the need to resist the love of money by recognizing our value to God. He made us with a purpose. Jesus instructs us to seek God's Kingdom and righteousness first, promising our needs will be met.We must actively participate in our provision and trust God to fulfill His promise. When we understand our worth to God, we'll pursue His Kingdom and boldly share the Gospel, glorifying Him in the process. The Choice We All Have To MakeUltimately, we all face a choice: will we follow the world or seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness? We can't do both. As Jesus states in Matthew 6:24:“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”Choose God over money and watch the cares of the world fade away.Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional from FaithFiIf you want to transform your approach to money through faith and find peace in God's provision, you can purchase a copy of Look at the Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and Anxiety at FaithFi.com/sparrows. The world tells us that success is the key to happiness. Get a better job, make more money, buy a bigger house, and then you'll be content. If that's the case, why do some of the wealthiest people in the world feel so empty? That's how John Rinehart felt. At 25, he had a great career and plenty of money, and yet he knew something was missing. As John searched for answers, he discovered that success means nothing if it isn't used to advance God's Kingdom. Success doesn't satisfy, and it was never meant to. Instead of accumulating wealth, believers will find greater satisfaction in giving it away. Today, John helps ordinary business people find extraordinary purpose in being gospel patrons—those who use their resources for God's glory. It's about being faithful with what's in our hands, even if it doesn't feel like a lot.” “The more that our works and our treasures are flowing together, the more our hearts will flow.” “The most important thing anyone decides with their finances is how they interact with generosity.” “Giving isn't something we have to do; it is something we are invited into with God.” “We always need to be growing in generosity.” “If we don't answer the question ‘what is enough,' it can limit the impact that we have.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Bare Wealth Advisors Ron Blue, Founder of Kingdom Advisors (see our past interview here) Kingdom Advisors (see our interview with founder, Ron Blue) Crown Financial Ministries Jim Wise, Financial Advisor (see our past interview here) John Rinehart, Author of Gospel Patrons (see our past interview here) Randy Alcorn (see our past interview here) Generous Giving (see our interviews with cofounders Todd Harper and David Wills and CEO, April Chapman) National Christian Foundation (see our interview with President Emeritus, David Wills) Every Good Endeavor by Timothy Keller The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group   BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Matthew 6:21 | Treasure of the Heart   For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.     1 Timothy 6:17-19 | Rich in Good Works   As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.     Luke 12:48b | Much Given, Much Required   Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.     2 Corinthians 9:6-8 | The Cheerful Giver   The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.    John 3:16 | For God So Loved the World   For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.   2 Corinthians 8:7 | The Grace to Give   But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also. We might be willing to give of our time and talents for God's Kingdom, but sometimes when it comes to our treasures or our finances, giving becomes difficult. Approximately twenty percent of Jesus' teachings dealt with money and possessions. Why? Because there is a profound connection between our heart and our treasures. Everything we do in our spiritual journey is part of an act of faith and our money and finances are no different. The Word of God exhorts us to trust in Jesus and not in our own wealth. The Lord doesn't need our money but desires us to partner with him as Gospel Patrons to see his Kingdom come here on earth as it is in heaven. Will you use your treasures to partner with Jesus for gospel proclamation?

A Gospel Patron is a disciple of Jesus who has developed a posture of generosity for the proclamation of the gospel through their time, talents, and treasures. If we are to be, grow, and make disciples, one of the critical character qualities that define our discipleship is generosity. Throughout the word of God we see Gospel Patrons who have lived sacrificially to see the Kingdom of God come here on earth as it is in heaven. Will you be a Gospel Patron today?

In this episode, Jeff and John discuss: Seeking God and counsel as you try and find His path for you. Becoming a global Christian. Having a plan to succeed financially without failing spiritually. Staying in the discomfort until God comes through. Treasuring the Creator, not things.  Key Takeaways: You cannot live only on others' stories of faith. You need to have your own spiritual, faith-filled experiences. On your faith journey, you need to learn to be uncomfortable without having all the information. Faith is putting trust in God without seeing all the answers.  Trust that God will answer your prayers, especially when it doesn't fall on your timeline. The safest place to be is in the will of God. Stay with Him in your journey and His path. Don't excuse yourself by the amount of money you can't give. He who is faithful with little will be faithful with much.   "Stay in the discomfort until God comes through because He will. He will - we don't control Him, He doesn't work for us, we work for Him. Stay with him in that journey." —  John Rinehart About John Rinehart: Author & Founder, Gospel PatronsJohn Rinehart is the author of Gospel Patrons, a book detailing the integral role business leaders have always played in God's kingdom. Jesus told His disciples not to boast about their giving, but does that mean all of our giving should be done in secret? Put another way, are there times when talking about our giving is actually a good thing? John Rinehart joins us to talk about this intriguing topic.John Rinehart, founder of Gospel Patrons, an organization with a unique mission for spreading the Gospel around the world. SHOULD CHRISTIANS ALWAYS GIVE IN SECRET?Most would answer, “Yes, of course, because Jesus tells us in the book of Matthew.” But let's take a closer look. The context is Jesus's Sermon on the Mount. And so it's three chapters, Matthew 5-7. And what's amazing about that is in that whole section, when Jesus says, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is given, he also talks about we should pray in secret, and we should fast in secret. Well, churches do corporate fasts and pray in public, and people have prayer meetings where they actually pray out loud. And so what we might glean from the context is that Jesus wasn't saying we should never share about our giving, we should never share about our praying and praying in public, and we should never talk about our fasting. What is your motivation?  Are you talking about it in order to be seen and glorified by others? Or is there a chance that we could talk about it in a way that's really helpful in building up? So that's the first thing we see from the context. The second is in the very same sermon, Jesus says to His disciples, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”And so there is a time to not have your light under a basket but to let it shine before others not so that we get glorified but so that they see our good works and glorify him. And third, Jesus publicly highlighted and celebrated generous people, so he didn't always keep it a secret Himself. To learn more about John and his ministry visit GospelPatrons.org.On this program, Rob also answers listener questions: Can you move a 403B into a standard IRA without a tax penalty? How do you determine the best way to use a lump sum of cash; pay off debt or build up your emergency fund? Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. With a background in business and a theology degree, John Rinehart combined two of his areas of expertise to found Gospel Patrons and write a book under the same name. At 25 years old, John Rinehart's business career was booming, but he felt his heart being called to something more. So he left the business world to attend seminary with the eventual goal of entering into ministry. Shortly after, he and his wife Renee decided take a 132-day trip around the world. They met and worshipped with other Christians along the way. One of those people was a British businessman who offered some sage advice. "Behind every great movement of God, generous business leaders have partnered with those who proclaim the gospel," he said. "God raises up people to proclaim the gospel, but he also raises up patrons to support them." That planted the seed for what eventually became his new venture, Gospel Patrons, and he later published a book under the same name. This week, Rinehart joins Scott Linebrink on "Get in the Game" to discuss what it means to be a Gospel Patron and where his heart for the book came from. John Rinehart is the author of Gospel Patrons: People Whose Generosity Changed the World and founder of GospelPatrons.org. John started his career in the business world before returning to seminary. However, it was on a 132-day trip around the world that God introduced John to the concept of a gospel patron. In his book, John vividly describes the lives of three individuals whose generosity changed the world: Humphrey Monmouth, a successful cloth merchant in the 1500s who personally funded William Tyndale in the translation of the first English bible Lady Huntingdon, a wealthy aristocrat in the 1700s who sacrificed much to partner with George Whitefield, the leading preacher of the Great Awakening and John Thornton, one of the wealthiest businessmen in England in the late 1700s who funded John Newton's hymnbook, which brought us “Amazing Grace” Since authoring Gospel Patrons, John has become an influencial speaker and founded GospelPatrons.org, which serves as a home to empower a generation of gospel patrons. On the website, John and his team have countless interviews with current day gospel patrons, short films and stories, and other resources to encourage those seeking to step out in faith to advance the gospel through generosity. John had plenty to say about topics like common themes among gospel patrons, the best ways to get started, and how generosity is critical to faith. Listen now to hear all he had to say! QUOTES TO REMEMBER “Why do I work? What is money for? What's the role of business people in the Kingdom of God?” “Behind every great movement of God, there is always going to be a behind-the-scenes generous, professional person who says: I'm in!” “The work of the Kingdom of God is not just for pastors or missionaries.” “No matter what gift you have, you can bring it to the table and God wants to use it.” “I think the historical patronage partnerships were significant because they unlock the way God works.” “Tithing isn't the finish line of Christian giving, it's the starting line.” “God is going to introduce you to people who need your support.” “Every great step of faith we're ever going to take is preceded by 100 tiny little steps of faith that lead us to be ready for those moments.” “You will be ready to step into your moment because you've already stepped into 100 smaller moments.”  “If we want to have great faith, we've got to use it.” “You grow in giving by giving.” “Gospel patrons who live lives of radical, inspiring generosity are people who first and foremost have understood and grasped the gospel.” “We become like that which we worship.” “One of the themes I see among great gospel patrons is that their true and pure genius is obedience. They're gifted is all sorts of ways, but when God speaks, they move.” “The generous life is the most joyful life there is.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Gospel Patrons (the ministry) Gospel Patrons (the book) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Luke 8:1-3 | The Patron Women Accompanying Jesus 1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. As the good news of the kingdom of God goes forth, it depends upon gospel proclamation. However, it also depends upon gospel patrons. Gospel patrons are servants of Christ who support the work of gospel proclamation out of their means. May this encourage us all to see that we have a role to play in seeing the kingdom of God advance.

"Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” - Luke 6:38 Behind every great movement of God stands a few generous men and women called Gospel Patrons. As a young businessman, John Rinehart found this truth while on a trip to Australia through a meeting with a fellow businessman. The truth was this: when God raises up people to proclaim the gospel, he also raises up patrons to support them. They have different gifts and different roles, but are partners in the same mission. Today's show is featuring John Rinehart, author of Gospel Patrons, as he speaks at the 2014 Generous Giving Conference.  "JOHN RINEHART is a California-based writer and speaker with a degree in business from Biola University and a M.Div from Talbot School of Theology. In 2009 John and his wife set off on a 5-month trip around the world to become globally-minded Christians. Their adventure led to the unexpected discovery of the beautiful part businesspeople can play in advancing God’s kingdom. Since then the message of Gospel Patrons has spread to business and ministry leaders around the world, helping them become radically generous and personally involved in the work of God. John currently speaks at a variety of events, conferences, and churches each year about the greatness of God and the part we can all play in the Great Commission." Key Takeaways When God raises up a preacher or a missionary, He also raises up a patron. What would've happened if the patron hadn't said. "Get to work Tindell." God has a part for all of us to play. Whether it is behind the scenes or up on stage, a generational impact happens when we choose to give and nurture our talents for the good of those around us.
