President Donald Trump's feud with Walmart is intensifying. After the retail giant warned that its prices will go up due to Trump's tariffs, he erupted on Truth Social, and even threatened Walmart to get it to “eat” the costs of his levies. Then White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the threat to reporters. Amusingly enough, all this constitutes an admission that other countries don't pay the costs of the tariffs, as he keeps claiming—we do. We talked to Lindsay Owens, an economist who's also executive director of the Groundwork Collaborative. She explains how Trump accidentally undermined his case for tariffs, why this is so damaging given Walmart's massive presence in MAGA America, and what all this reveals about Trump's growing political weakness on the economy. Tariffs, Tax Cuts & the Corporate Scam Economy In this episode of The Electorette, host Jen Taylor-Skinner sits down with Lindsay Owens, Executive Director of Groundwork Collaborative, to dissect the chaos of Trump's economic policies—and the hidden logic behind them. From erratic tariff announcements to the looming extension of the 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy, Lindsay reveals how economic “whiplash” is not just confusing—it's calculated. We explore how these policies are fueling inequality, harming working families, and creating fertile ground for corporate profiteering. Lindsay also explains how recession fears—some legitimate, others manufactured—are being used as cover for price gouging, layoffs, and cuts to essential services like Medicaid and food assistance. This episode also revisits the devastating legacy of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, its role in pandemic-era profiteering, and why the American public never saw the promised benefits. With recession risks rising and the corporate safety net growing stronger while ours is being shredded, this is a must-listen for anyone trying to make sense of the headlines—and the high prices. When most of us woke up Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump was still very excited about the tariffs he imposed on dozens of countries that had gone into effect just after midnight eastern time. At the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner the night before, he even claimed the scheme would be ‘legendary in a positive way' and bragged, ‘These countries are calling us up. Kissing my ass.' But by Wednesday afternoon, Trump had blinked, announcing a 90-day pause on nearly all of the ‘reciprocal' tariffs he unveiled last week (China was the exception; he boosted tariffs to 125 percent after Beijing retaliated with it's own reciprocal tariffs). Alex Jacquez, chief of policy and advocacy at the progressive think tank Groundwork Collaborative and a member of former President Biden's White House National Economic Council, explains why all this volatility leaves America worse off economically. And in headlines: Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made an uncomfortable guest appearance in the Oval Office, The White House said it's freezing hundreds of millions in federal funding for Cornell and Northwestern universities, and two federal judges put limits on the Trump administration's use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged foreign gang members.Show Notes:Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Elizabeth Pancotti, managing director of policy at the Groundwork Collaborative, to discuss Elon Musk and DOGE's efforts to curb government spending, and how it's faring in terms of public opinion. Then, she speaks with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the NALC's recent decision to reject a tentative contract deal with the United States Postal Service. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's plummeting approval rating, Hannity's sit down with the Trump/Musk regime, Trump's government funding freeze, Trump's support for Russia, Trump's agency raids, Trump's cabinet confirmations, record credit card debt, dropping homicide rates, Brazil's systems of political accountability, and Kansas' gender-affirming care ban, before watching Elon and Trump blatantly lie about their cost-cutting efforts on Hannity. Elizabeth Pancotti then joins, giving us an even more expansive view into the failures of the Musk/Trump regime to actually weed out the “$1 trillion” in “waste, fraud, and abuse” they claim to be going after, with the alleged $55 billion in progress they've made so far undermined by the fact it's only $8 million, before touching on the problem of relying on legal and constitutional strategies after decades of conservatives packing our courts. Expanding on this latter point, Pancotti and Emma dive deep into the Democratic Party's – particularly leadership's – ongoing failure to appropriately message the threat and devastation posed by the Musk/Trump regime, with a refusal to highlight the efforts to cut YOUR benefits and steal YOUR data to give more money and more power to the wealthiest man in the world and his billionaire buddies, not to mention their long-lasting refusal to present an alternative affirmative vision to this ideology of destruction. Tyler Vasseur then walks Emma through the recent decision by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to step down from his post, exploring DeJoy's nomination under Trump 1.0 to spearhead an effort to privatize the USPS, Biden's decision to keep him on, and why it was his failure to privatize fast enough that led him to get pushed out, and what that could mean for the future of the institution. Next, Vasseur dives deep into the National Association of Letter Carrier's historic “No” vote on a contract with USPS after nearly two years of negotiations, highlighting various failures in the agreement, including keeping wages in line with inflation. After expanding on the “Vote No” campaign efforts, Tyler unpacks why their biggest push in this bargaining process is for the right to strike, with the ongoing bargaining effort now lasting well over 600 days, wrapping up the show by highlighting coming rallies to support NALC's fight. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by RM Brown as they talk with a 412 caller about his experience with a Democratic polling group, unpack the astonishingly pro-Israel history of Russell Brand, and explore the truly atrocious messaging on display by Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. Molly from Brooklyn discusses teaching journalism in the age of Trump and AI, Dylan from Atlanta touches on a new democratized social media project, and the MR Team looks at the most recent data disproving the right-wing crime narrative of the last two years, plus, your calls and IMs! Owens attributes the record increases in corporate profits in the last few years to growing corporate concentration and lack of competition. She argues that these two factors gave companies an unprecedented level of market power, and therefore pricing power, which allowed them to exploit the supply chain crisis caused by COVID to drastically raise prices. Owens stresses the need for policy interventions to promote competition, transparency, and fair pricing in the market to ensure a more competitive and consumer-friendly economy. Today on Lever Time, we unpack how corporations built and then broke the supply chain — and more importantly, how they took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to price gouge everybody else. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it felt like we ran out of everything: toilet paper, hand sanitizer, microchips, exercise bikes, and more. High demand and supply shortages rocked the economy. Now we know that it was the corporations that did it to themselves. In his new book How the World Ran out of Everything: Inside the Global Supply Chain, veteran New York Times reporter Peter Goodman who covers the global economy unspools the long and sordid history of how the supply chain went global, then consolidated, and ultimately ended up in the hands of just three companies — creating a complicated and surprising crisis that has unfolded around the world. Then, as inflation began to set into the economy, corporations saw a huge opportunity to raise prices as consumers grew desperate — and they took it, giving us “greedflation.” In this episode of Lever Time, Goodman and Lindsay Owens, the executive director of The Groundwork Collaborative, sit down with senior podcast producer Arjun Singh to unpack how that gave us inflation.

As reported by Popular Information, corporate profit margins were at a level not seen since the 1950s, as increases in prices have outpaced increases in costs. Capitalism 101 says this shouldn't happen, because competing companies will step in with lower prices and grab some market share, right? What's different now? Abject greed, abetted by policy, and whistled past by the press corps. As one economist put it, “If people are paying $3 for a dozen eggs last week, they'll pay $3 this week. And firms take advantage of that.” One reason we have details on “greedflation” is the work of the Groundwork Collaborative. We spoke with their economist and managing director of policy and research, Rakeen Mabud, a few months back. Advocates warned that overturning Roe v. Wade would not be the end, and it wasn't. New year, new hosts, AND new guests on the Bloc! Amira is joined by our newest host and Gen Z rep from the JD staff, Becca Rose. Becca read too many Bloomberg articles about inflation and has some questions like, “Why do economists think that the pathway to a healthy economy is to lay off millions of working people?” and “Why is Bloomberg telling me the economy is great when we literally can't afford to eat three meals a day?” and “What does the Fed mean by a ‘soft landing' and why does it feel like it's still really gonna hurt?”So she called in a big shot to help us understand how the Fed wants us to think about the economy (aka Larry Summers is wrong) and what an alternative, more useful outlook for workers in the US looks like. I'm off this week but have invited Heather and Michael Lahanas-Calderón (Director of Digital Strategy at Inequality Media Civic Action) to chat in my absence. Michael, a member of Gen Z, leads our work on TikTok. He and the team at IMCA have been using video across social media to break down complex issues and change the frames through which people understand the system, so viewers can see what's at stake and mobilize towards an inclusive democracy and an economy where the gains are widely shared, including in advance of the midterms.Today they cover:* How young people process information (hint: it involves the internet).* How to fill the knowledge gaps around economics and inequality left by the mass media.* The dirty secret of social media video (most people watch with the sound off!).* What makes a video break through on crowded platforms like Instagram and TikTok.Here are a couple recent videos:* A 10-second TikTok video which uses several “trends” to depict how trickle-down economics is a hoax (the speed of which I find dizzying and Heather says makes her motion sick. Do you agree?!).* A video of CEOs crowing about raising prices on consumers to boost their profit margin; they speak for themselves on the relationship between corporate profiteering and inflation. (The Groundwork Collaborative has built a very useful website for these publicly-available quarterly corporate earnings calls.)Thank you to Deirdre Broderick / Corey Kaup and Joseph Lawson for today's theme songs, and to all of you for listening.P.S. With the clock ticking on Democrats' “Build Back Better” legislation, which passed the House last month and now awaits Senate action, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has cited yet another in a never ending string of “new” reasons for withholding his support for the bill. This time? Inflation. On Tuesday, during a Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit, Mr. Manchin said of inflation to a roomful of corporate CEOs: “The unknown we're facing today is much greater than the need that people believe in this aspirational bill that we're looking at and we've got to make sure we get this right.” Sen. Manchin, of course, isn't alone in singing that tune, with Republicans already testing out their attack ads for the 2022 midterms and conservative media outlets blanketing their airwaves for months with baseless claims that rising inflation is due to pandemic recovery spending. So, to help separate fact from fiction in the inflation debate, Rebecca sat down with two of the leading progressive economic voices working to tell the story about what's really going on with inflation—and the policies we need to bring down prices, address our failing supply chains, and more. Rakeen Mabud is chief economist and managing director of policy and research at the Groundwork Collaborative, which is dedicated to advancing a coherent, persuasive progressive economic worldview and narrative. And Matt Stoller is the research director of the American Economic Liberties Project (AELP), which fights to realize economic liberty for all, in support of a secure, inclusive democratic society. He's also the author of Goliath: The 100-Year War Between Monopoly and Democracy, and writes the newsletter BIG, which focuses on the history and politics of monopoly power.

This week in Washington has featured no shortage of drama, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell saddling Democrats with the threat of both a government shutdown and default on the nation's debts by withholding Republican votes for keeping the government funded or raising the debt ceiling. Meanwhile, despite months of forward momentum in Congress to craft sweeping “build back better” legislation encompassing much of President Biden's American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan—austerity politics (or more precisely Sinemanchin intransigence—to borrow a timely term from The American Prospect's David Dayen) has threatened to derail the president's economic agenda. Thankfully, late on Thursday night, House progressives came to the rescue, making good on their promise to withhold their votes for the first part of “build back better”—the bipartisan infrastructure package—until there's a commitment from the Senate (well, really Senators Manchin and Sinema) on a clear path forward for the second part of the package, the so-called reconciliation bill. That reconciliation bill of course is the piece of legislation that includes the bulk of Democrats' priorities, from paid family and medical leave to child care to home and community based services, climate, and much, much more. The theory of the case for House progressives? Hold the line to ensure the reconciliation package—the centerpiece of the president's economic agenda—isn't hung out to dry. To pull back the curtain on what's been going on in Washington this week, the politics driving the drama around build back better, government shutdown, potential default, and more—and a deep dive on why it's so important that Congress pass both parts of the president's economic agenda—Rebecca sat down with Lindsay Owens, executive director of the Groundwork Collaborative and a senior fellow at the Roosevelt Institute and Data for Progress. What does it take for someone to act in the interest of others? What constitutes trust in general, and trust in government in particular? Margaret Levi, a professor of political and behavioral sciences, shares her research on how people can be persuaded to act in the interest of others if they don't already want to. The conversation covers vaccines, unions, citizen confidence in government, and a lot more.  And make sure not to miss these Pitchfork-adjacent opportunities: Sign up for Econ Con, an upcoming progressive economy conference put on by our friends at the Groundwork Collaborative in partnership with other awesome organizations. This week, we speak with science writer (and brain expert) Dana Smith about how the relentless stress and isolation of the Covid-19 crisis may have altered our brains in ways that really help explain a lot about what many people have experienced over the past year and a half. The good news is that the old noodle is really resilient, and Smith offers some insights into how we can help it heal. Then we are joined by Lindsay Owens, executive director of The Groundwork Collaborative, to get us up to speed on the latest twists and turns in the Democrats' long slog toward Infrastructure Week.

By all the usual measures, the US economy is healthy. Unemployment is low, job growth continues to be robust, GDP is growing and 2019 was a great year on Wall Street. But while economic measures indicate a strong economy, too many people's economic lives are precarious. Stagnating wages, rising expenses, uncertain incomes and limited opportunities to get ahead leave far too many people across the country feeling left out of today's economic success. What is missing from our economic measures? And how could better measures help us address the economic divides and build shared prosperity? In a new book Unbound: How Inequality Constricts Our Economy and What We Can Do About It, Heather Boushey, President and CEO of the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, considers how inequality is restricting growth and imagines how a more equitable economy would function. The book also raises two key questions: How can we better measure our economy to understand how it can improve the lives of individuals and how do we better support working families so we can set them and their children up for success? The Economic Opportunities Program, Ascend, Financial Security Program, and Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation host a book talk with Heather and a panel discussion including other experts to explore these questions about defining and measuring economic success and how we can work more broadly to create growth with purpose. This event features Heather Boushey (President and CEO, Washington Center for Equitable Growth), Daniel Alpert (Managing Partner, Westwood Capital LLC and Affiliates), Sapna Mehta (Director of Policy and Research, Groundwork Collaborative), and moderator Maureen Conway (Vice President for Policy Programs, The Aspen Institute; Executive Director, Economic Opportunities Program). This event is part of the Opportunity in America series, an ongoing discussion series hosted by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program.
