Back by popular(-ish) demand, and because the Carmudgeons were at Monterey Car Week instead of podcasting live, we have another episode where Jason and Derek dig into their vast spreadsheets of automotive reviews. The boys use Random Number Generator to call up cells in their spreadsheets of automotive nerdery, forcing Jason and Derek to take a trip down memory lane — and then read aloud their sometimes-embarrassing commentary on cars they've driven in the past. Cars that they'd often forgotten about it. In this episode, we hear about some of the following cars: Alfa Romeo GTV6 Mercedes 300SL Roadster (W196) 2009 BMW E92 M3 Coupe DCT in a Hypermiling challenge 2023 BMW 760i xDrive 2001 Dodge Viper 2007 Mercedes CLK 550 Cabriolet Lancia Fulvia HF 2009 Jetta TDI (Mk5) 2009 Honda CR-V Diesel Bosch Prototype 1991 BMW 318is convertible (E30) 1994 Porsche Speedster 2011 Audi A8 2015 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Suzuki XL7 1961 Jaguar E-Type 2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S 7-speed Dogleg Manual 2024 Aston Martin Valour 1985 Ferrari Testarossa Monospecchio BMW 850i (E31) Bentley Continental W12 2008 Mercedes C300 Sport 6-speed …and more! === The Carmudgeon Show is a part of the Hagerty Podcast Network Learn more about your ad choices. Show #1479…(headline story). Stick around and we'll get you up to speed! Well…Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, your trusted source of EV information. It's Thursday 26th May, my penultimate day of hosting the show. I'm Blake Boland, and I've gone through every EV story today so that you don't have to! Watch Lucid Air Set New Hypermiling Record Of 687 Miles - The Lucid Air Dream Edition Range remains the world's longest-range production car, with an EPA rating of 520 miles (836 kilometers). - Tom Moloughney got remarkably close to that in the real world by covering 500 miles in the Lucid Air in InsideEVs' 70 mph range test. But how far can the electric luxury sedan go if the driver's only concern is range? - The plan was to drive the car at a constant 27 mph (43 km/h), switching drivers roughly every three hours. Any time the Lucid Air needed to stop or turn around, the driver would switch into neutral and coast before accelerating slowly back to 27 mph. - However, the vehicle did not manage to break the 700-mile threshold, with the 118-kWh battery running completely out of juice after 687.4 miles (1,106.2 kilometers). That was still good enough to qualify as a world record for the longest range achieved by production electric vehicle on public roads, but still a long way from the 999-mile Guinness World Record that includes prototypes on private tracks. Original Source : Watch Lucid Air Set New Hypermiling Record Of 687 Miles (insideevs.com) Harley-Davidson selling out its newest electric motorcycle in 18 minutes - When Harley-Davidson first unveiled its original LiveWire electric motorcycle and began taking orders nearly four years ago, the industry was largely in consensus about the bike itself. It scored impressive marks and high acclaim for performance and style, but its sales suffered due to the original lofty price of nearly $30,000 (though the price did drop to $22,000 after entering the LiveWire sub-brand). And so it's no surprise that ever since the original launch, significant hype has been building for Harley-Davidson's next lower-cost electric motorcycle. Unlike the currently-available, battery-buffered ChargeBox, which consists of a separate battery-booster module and two charging dispensers, the ChargePost consolidates battery-buffering and dispensers into a single "all-in-one" system with a large display that provides revenue-generating advertising opportunities. Original Source : Battery startup Sparkz, United Mine Workers of America announce labor-management agreement for W Va Gigafactory - Green Car Congress Over 300 battery gigafactories in the global pipeline - As EV demand steadily grows, automakers and their suppliers are wisely hustling to increase battery production capacity—preferably close to their auto plants and markets. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence reports that there are currently over 300 battery gigafactories in the construction or planning stages around the world. - This represents some 6,388 GWh worth of battery capacity, a 68% increase compared to the figure a year ago. Original Source : Charged EVs | Over 300 battery gigafactories in the global pipeline - Charged EVs Micro presents variants for the compact Microlino - ‘'In total, however, the Microlino will be available in four variants, all of which will be powered by an electric motor with an output of 12.5 kW. The top speed of the electric two-seater is 90 km/h. In addition, the Microlino will be available with three battery sizes (6, 10.5 or 14 kWh), which should enable ranges of 91, 177 and 230 kilometres respectively. The respective chemical storage can be recharged via type 2. With a maximum charging power of 1.35 kW, the small battery needs four hours, the medium battery with 2.6 kW three hours and the largest battery (also 2.6 kW) four hours.'' Set to debut at the upcoming Buick China Brand Day in early June, the Electra-X is said to offer "a sneak peek at future Ultium-based EVs for Buick in China." Wednesday 16th May 2018. AUDI E-TRON LOOKS ALMOST PRODUCTION-READY IN NEW SPY PHOTOS Motor 1 has got hold of new spy shots of the forthcoming Audi e-tron quattro, and as were about 3 months away from seeing it on 30th August, it's pretty much finished. Motor 1 says: "Our talented spy photographers have sent us this batch of shots with a near production prototype of the EV, undergoing testing in southern Germany. Under the clothes will be an electric propulsion, which will produce somewhere in the region of 435 horsepower (320 kilowatts). What’s more important, the vehicle will be able to travel up to 248.5 miles (400 kilometers) at a single charge." The battery is 95kWh, and my take from the pics, it's very similar to the Mercedes EQC and the Jaguar I-PACE. There will always be comparisons to the Tesla Model X but it looks more compact. BMW GROUP PASSES 250,000 MILESTONE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON THE ROAD "BMW Group has reached the major milestone of 250,000 of its electric vehicles being on the road around the world. Announcing its sales figures for April following a record-breaking first quarter, the German automotive giant revealed that it had shipped nearly 10,000 EVs in that month alone, pushing it past the quarter of a million mark." according to BusinessChief. "We are delighted to announce that there are now over a quarter of a million electrified BMW Group vehicles on the world’s roads,” said Pieter Nota, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Sales and Brand BMW. "Combined sales of BMW i, BMW iPerformance and MINI Electric vehicles were up 52% in April (9,831). We are well on track to deliver on our stated target to sell over 140,000 electrified vehicles this year." 'MILD HYBRID' KIA SPORTAGE DUE LATER THIS YEAR 48v mild hybrids are an attractive way for car makers to add some electrification without the expense of a hybrid or plug in hybrid system, whilst doing enough to lower the MPG. Kia look like they'll be doing that to their Sportage in the second half of this year reports Fleetworld: "The technology includes a compact 48-volt battery under the boot floor, charged using energy recuperated through a motor-generator connected to the engine’s crankshaft. It means the engine can switch off earlier and for longer, even while the car is moving, and lean on a 13bhp power boost from the motor while accelerating, both of which reduce fuel consumption." TESLA MODEL 3 TRAVELS 515.7 MILES ON SINGLE CHARGE IN HYPERMILE RU We love a good story of hypermiling. Being very gentle with your right foot and possibly following trucks too closely which we don't recommend. And Teslarati have picked up on this "A Tesla Model 3 driven by Denver Tesla Club president Sean M. Mitchell just set a hypermile record, traveling 515.7 miles (830 km) on a single charge. The trip, which lasted 18 hours, started from Denver, CO and ended in Topeka, KS." He did it at 30mph, Chill mode was on and regen was on low. And of course you wouldn't try this attempt without the Model 3 Aero Wheels. @SeamMMitchell: "515.7 mi (830 km): Though well short of intentions, great to set the benchmark for longest hypermile in a #Tesla #Model3. The last 100 mi really cut into range (poor route planning). Decided to play it safe and stop early." LEAKED EMAIL SAYS TESLA MAY HAVE HUGE BURST OF MODEL 3 PRODUCTION THIS WEEK CNBC reports on another email from Elon Musk. Now we know what he meant by Tesla being a leaky sieve of information. "The email said it is "quite likely" Tesla will make more than 500 Model 3 cars per day this week, which would be a 75 percent increase over last month, Electrek said. Tesla was not immediately available for comment. Musk also asked employees to identify any production bottlenecks." CHINA'S FAW TO INVEST $260M IN BYTON "Chinese state-owned carmaker FAW Group has agreed to invest around $260 million in China-backed electric car start-up Byton as part of an ongoing series-B funding round, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Tuesday." says Norihiko Shirouzu for Reuters. "The deal was signed over the weekend in Nanjing where Byton is building its headquarters and production facilities as well as a technology centre, they said. Byton is looking to raise a total of about $500 million in the round." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Mr. Money Mustache shares what hypermiling is and how you can save 25% on gas doing it. This is Part 3 of 3. Episode 308: Hypermiling: Expert Driving to Save 25% on Gas - Part 3 by Mr. Money Mustache (Debt & Car Insurance). Mr. Money Mustache is a thirty-something retiree who now writes about how we can all live a frugal, yet awesome, life of leisure. He and his wife studied engineering and computer science in Canada, then worked in standard tech-industry cubicle jobs in various locations throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. Then they retired from real work way back in 2005 in order to start a family. This was achieved not through luck or amazing skill, but simply by living a lifestyle about 50% less expensive than most of their peers and investing the surplus in very boring conservative Vanguard index funds and a rental house or two.
